I've bought Desire 4 days ago.
I've been running in some battery problems a lot. I've heard that battery should have 4-5 full draining and charging before having its max capacity, but I have a life span of about 16-20 hours of battery with Wi-Fi on.
How i found out that: Yesterday I went to the country and messed around with my gps and navigation (never used one, so felt like a little child with a brand new shiny toy). So the battery went dead and i charged it almost full. When i got home i turned the wifi on. Didn't manage to connect to my home network, due to Android still not supporting Ad-Hoc networks (sharing through my notebook) so i didn't bother more and used my data plan, but forgot to turn off the wifi.
In about 2 hours, the battery was nearly 60% from 90. When i went to see what's draining the battery I saw it was the Wifi. I turned it off and since last night, up to now (about 14 hours) the battery is 50% (only 10 percent for 14 hours).
Is there any way to make the phone not scan so agressively for Wifi when it's on ? I'm comming from iphone and it didn't matter too much if i had my wifi on or off there.
First of all, what you're experiencing is normal.
In fact, dropping only 30% with 2 straight hrs of heavy use is actually quite impressive.
If you don't want your device to scan for wifi, turn it off. Simple as that. Keep the WiFi setting widget on one of your homescreens for easy access.
It wasn't heavy use I killed all apps and left it there. 30% are just from WiFi scanning.
I know I must turn off wifi, i have the widgy button, but sometimes i just forget i have to shut it down. (Though that's a bit killing, since i didn't have to do this on my iPhone. Actually this is the only shortcoming i can think of now, great phone. Seems i have to get used to killing extra stuff )
Sadly i couldn't find an option to tell it to scan on rarer occasion, just to help absent-minded people like me.
Try downloading "Y5 - Battery Saver" from the Market.
It automatically switches WiFi on and off depending on your location (as determined by cell location, not GPS).
It allows you to leave WiFi in locations where you know you have WiFi, and automatically switches it off when you leave those locations.
I've installed it, but not exhaustively tested as yet as I've not really been out of WiFi coverage since I installed it.
Regards,
Dave
Try getting the WiFi On/Off widget from the market.
It lets you turn off the WiFi with one touch. Will save you a lot of battery when not using it.
@Gana1991 - i've already noted that i have the widget (no need to download from market)
@foxmeister - thanks, i will try that. (I have been secretly thinking about some app with this function )
indeed, there is a WIFI widget builtin.
If you really want another widget, check the WiFi Toggle by "JQ Soft", nice design.
The Y5-Battery Saver is nice....it seems to work properly.
But i am affraid it was causing some problems here, so i uninstalled.
I will reinstall and do some more tests.
WI-FI usage is actually much better than using the network which drains the battery more.
But deffo only have on when using, not all the time.
Or you'd use the standard HTC energy widged or the android wifi switch wich can be found @ widged -> settings -> wifi
Put the HTC battery widget on the screen, not only does it show what % you have left but selecting the widget pops up a small menu where you can adjust display, turn on /off WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth, vey handy indeed
I leave my WiFi on all the time at home because of the data constantly changing between G/3G it drains the battery amazingly fast. leaving WiFi on helps me save battery and keep a data connection. I took my phone off charge at 9 this morning, WiFi has been enabled all day and I have 80% battery.
once the battery has had a week or 2 of charging it will run loads better. also charging with the phone switched off gets you a bit more juice because of a firmware problem.

Where is this battery widget? I cant find it anywhere.
Oops, didnt know i had to look for it on the market. Found it.
Go settings, wifi, menu button and this brings up advanced settings. From there you can disable wifi after 15 mins of inactivity. When the phone wakes wifi kicks in. I have data turned off, wifi turned off, but if I forget to turn wifi off after using it, it's not too bad as it will be deactivated.
What's that widget called? All I can find is the power widget.
Ok found it
Only seems to be a meter though, no adjustments?
Go settings, wifi, then WiFi settings, then press the menu button,. From their you can select advanced WiFi settings.

If you were using your data plan then your wifi wouldn't be on as the phone turns it off when your connected via 3G, it only uses one or the other not both at the same time.
That's the way it is on my Desire.
I've not used WiFi at all today yet apparently its consumed 25% of my battery. I've got it switched off via widget and its also set to disable after 15 minutes of inactivity.
Any thoughts?
thanks for any help
It's just occurred to me that perhaps the percentages run and run and are not reset after a charge?
Anyone know how it works?
Hi
Finding, that the battery from the SGW drops to fast, I installed an so called battery saver app. Firstly I tried juice defender, finding out that I need Pro version to really save energy the way I want to -> deinstalled. Next I tried GreenPower free battery saver. Didn't notice, that switching off WLAN and G3/4 is also only available in pro version. Nevertheless I configured everything in order to give it a try.
Today I noticed, that GreenPower... switched on WLAN and GPS and Blutooth and every other power consuming device. Despite disply brightnes. For what?? So I uninstalled the app.
The problem now is, that GreenPower... switched the display brightness to automatic! Even at the widget "Energiesparmodus" ("powersavings"?) the sign for brightness shows an "A" for automatic. I can adjust the brightness at settings (1000 subfolders) BUT the quick cool sliding at the notification bar is not working any more.
Is there a possibility to switch it on again?
I'm rooted and have Titanium Backup installed with an full backup from last week.
Trying to recover notification bar did not work (screen notification "backup failed" and notification bar was gone; after reboot bar back again, with no brightness regulation).
Anybody with glue for this?

Personally recommend to not use a battery saver apps or some sort eg. when the screen is off data connection will be off.
And when you wake the SGW it will again struggle to look for the data connection signal ...that will take energy away from the battery.

What about installing a custom rom like Bionic cow? Had the same problem with the energy on this device with the stock rom and i tried different "saver"-apps.
At least i gave this rom a try et voilà even with intensive use the accu lasts much longer than before. I can't say why this rom reduces the energy consumption, maybe because of the lightweight launcer and some other modifications...
solved
Thanks guys!
It stopped working for 3 days. On the 4th suddenly it worked again. Without doing NOTHING. I even didn't do another reset. curios

I open this thread to help the users having bad battery life and find out the possible resolutions. Whenever you see the bad battery life, in most of the cases it would be caused by some specific apps or the way you are using the phone and it's not from the ROM itself.
As you may know, I'm working on Kobridge Tweaks and trying to improve the performance and battery life but there're lots of variances that we still don't know and have to know.
So, let's work together to find out the better solutions!
In here, please share your screenshots and your settings. But, don't post with just simple words - it's good or it's bad. We need the following information when you post;
1. Your ROM related info - Rom name, version
2. Kernel/modem version

4. Any tweaks that you did by yourself

Kobridge - General Settings to extend the battery life
General Settings or Configuration to extend battery life
This is an initial edition. I'm going to update and add more information here.
Original post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625299
I've worked on this part so long time since I've started using ICS ROM. I also tried almost every battery saver apps but didn't get any better result using my own method because sometimes there are lots of overheads using it (I'm trying to avoid describing any individual app's pros and cons in here and just provide you the better way to configure your phone).
The information in here is based on FF18 rooted stock rom/modem/kernel. But it's not limited to any specific phone or build. You could probably use it in any phones or builds.
1. Wifi
Some of you understand that wifi is faster than 3G and use less battery than 3G. You also say that 4G is the biggest monster consuming lots of battery. But that would be true and false.
Sometimes, wifi uses lots of battery to get the faster speed and keep the connection.
There could be multiple scenarios in here and below is based on my test -
Original post can be found in here
WIFI - I always turned on at home (because wifi is available) with 'never' option. In this case, 3G will cover the data communication if 3g turned on during the deep sleep. If wifi signal is so strong, even you don't need to turn on 3G and use the wifi during the sleep mode by changing the wifi option.
If you don't need the data communication during sleep mode, then turn off 3G and make wifi sleep (never) during the sleep mode. With this option, your battery could last about 2 hours per 1% drop.
3G - you need to compare between 3G and wifi. Which one is better and use less battery based on the signal strength.
For me, I'm using both 3G and wifi turned on. Using these two options turned on, I make the data communication available always and these two are compromising each other.
OK, here are some screenshots from 3.4M (check the original post link above). From 100% to 65%, I turned on 3G, so it covers the wifi when wifi sleeps during the deep sleep. From 65% to 45%, I turned off 3G, so during the deep sleep, both wifi and 3G were not available. When screen turned on wifi only came back (if you are not a heavy user, this method will save lots of battery).
Based on what I said, I've tested couple of things-
1. Battery life when wifi turned on 24x7
2. Battery life when 3G turned on 24x7
1. When wifi turned on 24x7 (turned on even screen is off), my phone shows that there were about 2.5% drop in every hour (100% > 73% about in 9.5 hours)
2. Wehn 3G turned on 24x7 (no wifi, no 4G), the battery consumption was much slower than wifi. (73% > 62% about in 14 hours). A little more than 1 hour per 1% drop.
Based on my test with minimum wifi, 3G usage, it shows that 3G saves a lot more battery during the standby mode. This result could be different based on your area and signal strength.
Now I showed many things related to wifi, 3G and how it affects the battery life.
Only one thing that I did not test is 4G. It's really hard to make a test using 4G inside of my office because I don't have 4G signal at all. What I can try is, 4G random reboot issue. I'll try to turn on 4G and see if it happens....
2. 3G
Keeping 3G turned on is a good habit. Because it covers wifi and 4G whenever those are not available. 3G uses battery a lot less than wifi and 4G (it could be different based on your signal strength)
Howto keep it on: setting -> more -> mobile networks -> check 3G DATA
Like I said before, if you have a reasonably good 3G signal, then you may want to turn off wifi and 4G to save the battery.
3. 4G
Just like wifi, minimize turning on 4G network. This use a lot of battery if you are in the bad reception area. If the signal strength is really good, then it would be probably ok keeping 4G turned on. In some cases, 4G would be the only solution to watch the movies, streaming videos when the wifi is not available.
Based on my limited test, using 4G in good reception area is much better than using wifi with low/weak signal.
4. Call option
Mark checkbox for Turn on proximity sensor for your convenience even there would be a little battery drain. But if you are a heavy talker, then I recommend to uncheck this option and use the power button to go back to control mode.
5. Sound
Lower the sound/vibration level within the acceptable range for you. There would be some differences on battery behavior by turning off or on of sound/vibration. But I don't want to recommend anything in here because I don't want you to lose any incoming calls/messages/etc.
6. Display
Automatic brightness should be fine in most cases. It's really related to screen on time battery consumption. I don't want to deal with this option at this time.
Pulse notification light, display battery percentage - turn it on or off based on your preference. Battery consumption by turning on these options would be minimal. I saw that some people said that they recommend to turning off the 'pulse notification light'. But I don't agree with that. One blinking LED light almost does not use any battery!
display timeout - I set it with highest value provided. After using the phone, I manually press the power button to go to sleep mode. With short timeout value, I have to keep press the button or screen to keep the screen on. I don't like this method.
Turn on 'Auto adjust screen power'.
7. Power saving mode
I always keep this option off because I do not want to lose anything because of low battery. I would rather change the numbers in my tweak (battery profile 2 in scaling tweak).
8. Account and sync
Most of time, I keep this option turned off. This would be one of the battery eating monster. I would rather individually sync the apps whenever I need it or from the actual apps.
9. Battery
when you charge the battery and phone shows that 100% charged, unplug the cable few seconds and plug-in again to charger. Repeat this couple of times and your battery would be really fully charged. Many times, even phone shows 100% charged, it could be the minimum 100% range. Actually, there's some voltage allowed and considered as 100% charge. But by maximizing the voltage during the charge, your battery life could be extended.
10. Motion
Turn off this option if you don't need this.
11. email
If possible, turn off the option that pushing email immediately. Instead, put the retrieval interval as long as you can. Based on my test, it could extend your battery life as maximum as couple of hours. In my case, I put the 2 hours interval. By doing this, your phone is much easier to enter the 'deep sleep' mode.
12. Startups
For me, I don't allow the apps automatically start during the boot as much as possible. If it's the system app and critical app for the phone's normal operation, then you have to allow those startups but otherwise, you can disable the startup apps based on your test.
For this, I usually use Rom Toolbox and/or System Tuner Pro. These apps allow us to enable or disable the startup apps.
For any apps like I don't use frequently or at all, I disable the apps from the 'event' (rom toolbox) or startups (system tuner pro). Once you disable the startups, you may need some test to see what happens when you manually launch the apps. If your app does not start normally, then go back and enable the event again.
There's also one more battery eating moster - widgets (currently doing some experimental test on it)
Regardless of widgets are in foreground screen or just stays in widgets folder, almost same amount of battery could be used by widgets to make it upto dated and refresh the connections, etc.
So, if you don't need the widget or don't use, go to (from Rom Toolbox) Auto Start Manager -> Applications -> select app you want to check -> it will show that widget updating is enabled or not. If it's enabled and you don't want it, just disable it. Then the app is not going to use that specific widget and actually widget will disappear from widgets folder.

It's not that the blink uses battery, it's that the blink causes your phone to wake up from its Deep Sleep and use the 200 MHz state of your processor. This wakelock takes away battery.
Thanks for the guide though. Looking forward to getting better battery life. I'm currently on CM9 though so I can't use your tweaks Just waiting for an AOKP build that switches /emmc and /sdcard back around to the way it should be
Edit: Just got System Tuner Pro... seems very complicated but I followed your startup advice

Hi,
As I remember my STAMINA mode work good in .234 fw.. my Mobile Data connection was disable and resumed when screen on.
But after .244 update.. Stamina mode does not work as before, Apps get stopped when screen is offed, but Mobile data connection is still there.
I have no apps in white-list..
Im bit worried, cause i have enabled mobile data 24x7 in LTE mode, so disabling it when screen is off, will help me on battery..
But i done know whether its the way how Stamina mode works..
If someone can explain me.
Thank you

stamina mode is somethings to enable phone enter into deep sleep mode. But after u turn off the screen and lock, if there got any apps consuming the data in background, so phone cant enter deep sleep.
most probably is Auto-Sync, social messaging apps (Viber, Line, Whatsapp, WeChat, Tango and etc). these will enable the phone always keep awake and using the data.. Stamina mode will only works after screen off for a certain time, will enter into deep sleep. If any apps wake it up, then wont work anymore.
So if u want stamina mode works better, turned off Auto-Sync, Mobile data (if u have a lot of social messaging apps).
Hmm..

I'm same person as you. I'm turned on data, GPS, auto sync all the time.
Normally average I can get 3 hours screen on time with 12-15hours total.
Hope this can be your guide for battery usage life. I didn't active stamina mode due to I need receive email, msg at anytime. If phone lost still can track back.

I have never had much luck with stamina mode, or disabling background processes or whatever and, believe me, I have spent what feels like a total time of 5 weeks of my life on this, as for all of us, trying to get our super smartphones with awesome screens to last more than the waking hours of one day....
Here is a screen shot of my XZL from this morning. (82% battery remaining, 27 hrs of use on battery, screen on time 9% = approx 1.5 hrs in screen diag window I have Auto Sync enabled, and collect emails on regular basis.)
I am using DS Battery saver (pro version but there is a free one to try) and thro custom settings can allow checking for emails at whatever interval I like so, for example, i set DS to wake up (in background, of course) every 20 mins for 2 mins to allow whitelisted email app to check for mails or whatever intervals and apps I want....
SMS and MMS are always instant as are incoming calls (obviously again)
Have this on all my work phones, XZL, GS4, GS3, HTC one etc, and all are now easily able to do two days with what I would call normal usage (3-4 hours screen on per day) emails and calls and the rest all the time
@chuan Hong - why leave GPS on all the time, are you looking at maps all the time? Device locks so fast on GPS why not just turn it on when you need to know where you are or where the phone is? Certain apps will switch it on when signalled to do so remotely...

Thanx al try the app
Srsly man, stop using battery saver apps, that is Not at all required. In fact that app might be interfering with ur stamina mode...
Also, as another person above said that stamina mode requires deep sleep, this aint true(actually, that would defeat the whole purpose of stamina mode). As soon as u turn the screen off, the stamina mode kicks in.
Also, how do u know that stamina mode isnt working? Do u recieve whatsapp notifications after u turn the screen off??
U might wanna check ur stamina mode settings.

Sorry, but I am not stupid enough to run both at the same time! What the battery saver app offers over and above stamina mode is deep sleep so you have missed the point there. For me that is why it saves battery for my usage...
My remarks are intended to offer another possible direction for those who have not succeeded in achieving what they are looking for using stamina mode. For me that is the purpose of this place that we love, xda! Negative comments slagging off others people's posts when they are trying to be helpful are what is rapidly becoming the norm here, and that is very sad...
My remarks are also based on many hours of analysis and research and are, for my usage, bourne out by empirical results!

On a more conciliatory note, sorry if I ranted, you are correct when it comes to the Wi-Fi only tabs and battery usage is worse with an app than with stamina mode. Maybe related to continual switching/seeking of phones looking at 3g, h+, lte in the background which ds obviously removes....

Well friend u r an advanced sort of user... Unlike many others who just download things and complain that their phone isnt working properly... I previously thought that, and u might not believe but there r ppl who use stamina mode and battery saver apps simultaneously.
That's why I said so. I never meant to counter comment u in a negative way. Im sorry if u feel so. I just wanted to convey that battery saver apps r not good for our droids.

recommend u to install these 2 apps too. i know myxperia can track our phone too.. but GotYa! got much better features. MOST IMPORTANT, cant let people turned off our phone 1st. Once off, then can flash rom or anything. GONE.so smart lockscreen protector is important and installed gotya! to catch/track our phone

stamina mode is somethings to enable phone enter into deep sleep mode.

I think you are wrong. Stamina mode should always work the way that it disables mobile data when the screen is off, regardless of how many apps you have running in ackground. that is the whole point of stamina mode. Mine is also not working. I turned it on this morning at 5 am, and at 6 am the battery dropped 3% and i got a notification that i should turn on stamina mode to save battery. The screen was off for that one hour and the phone wasn't in use
Hey guys,
I am searching for a mod or app that makes my Handy go online in a set period.
For example I have set the Wi-fi not to be on always when screen is off and have activated the standby mode (so 3G won´t be on when screen is off), because it makes the battery last so much longer. And now I don´t want to always have to switch on screen or touch my phone I would just like it to go online every 30 minutes for 1-2 minutes so i get the notifications and see i have missed something because of the notification light.
I know you will answer me just turn everything on always but that drains the battery to much.
Hope someone could help me.
