[Q] Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright. So, my Sister is still very new to Android, but asked my parents for this tablet for Christmas. They got it for her, but after listening to some reviews on YouTube.....Honestly just hearing negative things about it. To anyone who has that tablet....how's your experience with it? I am debating if I should have my parents return it and get her a different one or not. Any input would be very appreciated!

TBH I'd recommend you to buy something else. I have one. Not really pleased with it. A nexus 7 would be better IMO

for me is enought
I don't know what you or your sister want to do with this but for me it's work nice. i bought it for enterteiment (movies, on-line tv). my wife give up on her laptop and reads newspapers on it.
I am pleased with it but a little more ram don't hurt. depends on your buget and your requirements you should buy what you want. I chose it because I like the brand and I think I made a good choice.

Would you do this trade for your Nexus?

I know a guy in real life, he is offering me a Galaxy Note in exchange for the Nexus and $100. I am really one the fence. I like the phone, but it might be a bit too large, would you do this deal?

I wouldn't do it. I had the phone, way too big it gets annoying.

Have both devices. If you can cope with the size its a great day device overall. But Nexus is a Google phone meaning you get updates faster. Note you have to wait for Samsung to release their source

So you would have to pay him $100 to get the Note? No chance. What makes the Note worth $100 more than the Nexus? Samsungs amazing TouchWiz UI or their lazy update procedure?
Phone for phone without any payment could be acceptable for someone who is ok with that.
But then I wouldn't even take the Note if he was paying me $100, so I'm biased.
Nope , don't do it ..
Now if the $100 wasn't in the picture then it would be a decision worth thinking about or if he was giving you the $100 =P
Stick with the Nexus

ive used both and i like the size of the nexus a lot better for a daily.
Wow amazing forum with lightning quick responses
Yes @ above. I would be giving him $100 and my Nexus. It's funny I even though I own the Nexus I already bought another replacement for this phone. This is why I am exploring selling/trading it.

Straight up trade or nothing and that's only if you think you could find use out of the Note. I know quite a few store owners who love it especially for their online sales as they can just take pictures of products and doodle on it and send it out to prospective customer.
My father's colleague, who's a Apple guy, switched to a Note also for simply one reason; He could have the text large enough to use it without his glasses on .
There are use cases for the Note for sure, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it like most on here would .
On that note, I wouldn't use one personally as again, it doesn't fit my use cases.
Don't do it, especially if you like rooting and such.
Not sure Samsung ironed out the brick bug, but it's not the device to have if you want to run anything other than stock. Even doing a factory reset was bricking them. Ridiculous.
I wouldn't do it either. Just because something retails for more money doesn't mean it is actually worth more. Then Nexus is a better phone, period.
SGN is a super nice gadjet , but Nexus is the most compatible with android , if it was me , I'll *****slap him with his 100 buks and keep my phone. but this is me, maybe you have a different opinion
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
He should be paying you $100 plus the note to begin with, if you do it not only has he ended up with the better phone but he's robbed you $100 , just because the note retails for more new doesn't mean its the better device, look at the iPhone for example its inferior to the nexus but still costs more.
Keep your Nexus, it's still the backbone of Android.

When i thought to buy a new phone, the first on the line was the Note. So i went to stores do "meet" it. First look, i feel disconfortable by its size and start looking other phones, so i saw the Nexus and it was love at the first sight. When i held it in my hand, i knew that i´ll be my phone.
It fits perfectly.
Today i think that if i bought the Note i was regret. Not only because the size, but the OS updates and customizations.
Keep your Nexus and be happy for the rest of it´s days.
(sorry for the english)
Keep your Gnex and the $$$ , add 99 more and get the nexus7.
So you ll be complete

the galaxy s3 you mean I'm sure, the galaxy 3 is a budget phone..
Iwouldn't even trade for the s3 personally, I love this phone
I have both and if its the ATT version its worth it. The dev support over there isnt bad and once you get used to the size, which I did very quickly, I don't even use the nexus anymore as the screen is so much more vibrant. Just slap on an AOSP rom and it turns the note into a great phone/tablet.

In my opinion the only S3 worht having is the international version as the US versions have been nerfed as they usually are by us carriers.
As to the OP keep your Nexus, I have friends who have the Note and they love it but development on it is nonexistant in comparison to the Nexus, heck my old Vibrant has more development going on right now.

Is it still worth it to buy?

Well I know this is gonna mostly be my first and last thread, sorry. But anyways onwards to the question is, is it still worth it to buy one? I've found that my local Koodo's Mobile (Canadian phone provider) is selling the Samsung Galaxy S2 X for $300 dollars off contract brand new. Which it is identical to the T-Mobile variant. I do realize that the phone itself is about a year old, and was again wondering is it still worth it to buy one, or wait until the next nexus phone or flagship phone instead?
My intent for the purchase would be honestly to get a gift for my mom, since she still on an old phone. She isn't too tech savvy, so she'll be using mostly Facebook, Skype, Youtube, Netflix on WiFi, being that the phone is so large, the pricing and all. If not would an iPhone be easier for her to use because of iOS?
TL;DR - $300 Samsung Galaxy S2X/T-Mobile Samsung S2, should I buy or not, or buy something simple like an iPhone for her to use?

I would say go for it! Development has been really great lately for our devices, we just got CM10 and CM9 is going strong!
300 brand spakin new is a steal. I got mine off craigslist for 270. I would easily fork over 30 more for a BRAND new phone.

I think I might just get it, and if she doesn't like it I'll keep it for myself. Since her contract is about to end soon, so I'll just pay for an upgrade to whatever phone. I have been eyeing AOKP on my Nook Color, that I got in the states, but haven't full commitment and stayed with CM 7.2.
I have another question which is about the phone itself, which I know I shouldn't post, but. What is the recommend kernel and rom if I should even consider rooting it, which I do plan to if I purchase it. If its compatible with Sixaxis Controller, is it strong enough to emulate say something like a PS1 or a N64, is the toolkit the easiest way to root and last question I swear, does do I have to purchase a certain type of adapter for MHL or is it a universal thing?
EDIT: Because I plan to make it somewhat of a gaming hub where I can emulate my favorite classic games, and use it like a HTPC since XBMC is being released I believe.
Aokp is fine running psx, haven't tried n64. Haven't tried sixaxis either. Actually any of the popular roms are fine.... This phone is pretty beastly. If anything you can stick to the provided kernel that flashes with the ROM or tdj maybe eugene? I'm not sure if he has updated his lately. Btw you should really flash a custom ROM if you give it to your mom because stock ics trend to be buggy.

As much as I cannot stand an iPhone, Apples BS,etc. The iPhone is definitely user friendly for basic functions. Apps that we have are free but an IPhone user isn't typically wanting to tether, NFC, or anything else we have as a feature.
I encourage you to buy one used. Maybe that way, you could not give direct profit to the already rediculous "patent thief".
Let us know what you decided.

As does T-Mobile. And about previous comment of iPhone being user friendly, android is even more user friendly. Yes d you're but going to hack the **** out of it then I recommend touch wiz miui.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I've notice the Chinese made MIUI,is similar to the iOS in someways. I think I'll buy the phone brand new for the sake of it, let her test it out replacing her regular phone for a few days, and if she likes the hardware and how the touchscreen works I'll install MIUI for her. If not, no point returning and I might as well keep it, install a rom which I like, and replace my Blackberry. Again like I said her contract is about 6 months away, they'll call her saying "3 Year Contract blah blah blah", which then I'll do the honors of paying for the upgrade myself.
And I do say, the price bought outright blows the iPhone out of the waters.
That's an amazing price for a brand new hercules.. Not to mention it's still one of the best phones you can get.

Just get her the SGS2 and be done with it, way better phone
Get her something easy to use. I got my father a pantech crossover and he just couldn't get it. He was so good with his blackberry so I figured it would be easy. Wrong.
If you do get her an s2 make sure you set it up for her.
If your choices are the S2X and the iPhone, I would take the S2X. You're not gonna find a new iPhone for $300, and iPhones don't have expandable storage. If you want easy navigation try flashing MIUI like mentioned, or maybe JoyOS which is basically an IOS clone.
As long as it isn't rooted with all that mumbo jumbo crud, galaxy s phones are total parent friendly! I jumped my mom into the Android game with a galaxy s 4g and she loves it. Hell, every time I show up with my phone she always gets impressed by it.
300$ is a total steal for what you're getting and you should totally do it!

Parents can handle android! I gave my mom an old Optimus T and showed her how to play words with friends and she's old lol.
Just got it on contract with TMobile. I looked at the s3, and couldn't really justify paying $130 more for the s3 than the s2. They are both dual core 1.5 ghz phones with 8mp cameras that take full hd video. Whatever else it has just wasn't worth the extra $. Lots of other people will do the same math.

Need help from this forum!

Hi Galaxy nexus gang,
I'm on the verge of joining your ranks, but I wanted to ask about this phone from the people who have it. I have a chance to buy one for $200 w/car dock. As the story goes, the seller's wife gets a discount with Verizon or whatever, so they are leaving T-Mobile and that is why he is selling the phone.
However, I've been burned...once badly...by Craigslist phone sales. Since pretty much all tech has problems, what would be the biggest Galaxy Nexus issues to look for when I get a chance to play with it before dropping the money. It is not in warranty, but supposedly it works great.
As an example, someone asked a similar question to the Nexus 7 community and I helped by listing the 14 most common issues people seemed to be reporting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1829642
Anyone familiar with the device and it's issues, if you could do the same for me, that would be awesome. I plan to meet tomorrow to buy it and I don't have much time to research it today (taking care of a toddler gives me pretty much her nap time which I'm using to type this. LOL)
I ****ing love mine, it's the best phone I've owned. Root it and boot it!

You should check everything from the phone before buying it, there's a post around here of someone who buy one and it end being a fake one... Becareful.
Ok the only issue that I found when I buy it was the sound, its a bit low, but you can make it sound louder with some app or even with a custom ROM. That's the only issue I found. Besides that I love it!!! It's just the best phone that I have owned so far :good:
Give the phone a thorough run through before purchasing.
Watch some videos and reviews of the Galaxy Nexus and familiarize yourself with it.
Take note of how the screen is supposed to feel and how the software is supposed to run. Also take not of the user interface. These are all things that a knockoff will have different.

Which phone would you get?

Hey All,
I need some help making up my mind. I'd love to hear your input.
I moved to China in August. I had a Galaxy Nexus at the time. A bottle of vodka ended the life of that phone prematurely. I need to buy a phone to replace it.
I would prefer to buy a N4, but I don't have any friends or family coming to see me until the end of January, and I'm a little nervous about shipping a new electronic device into China.
I was checking out my options today, and it seems my best choice will come from the following: GNex, S3, Note 2, Meizu MX, or Oppo Finder.
If money were no object, and you were choosing one from that pool of devices, which would you go with? I'm having a hard time weighing the pros and cons of these different devices. And, as much as I enjoyed my GNex, I'm a little hesitant paying new-phone price for a phone that has some pretty old specs. Feel free to tell me I shouldn't feel this way. I might just need to hear it.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Depends what forum you post on. Since you are on the nex forum, that will be the one that gets voted. Move over to the s3 forum and guess what they will tell you to get?
Always the same back and forth arguing. I would just try them out if you can in the store and see which you like best. Personally I like the nex because I hate UI overlays put on top of google (sense/tw)
I thought I might get a more honest response out of this crowd, because we are mostly people who have seen other devices released since we bought this phone. I imagine a lot of people here are waiting to upgrade and have been eyeing other devices the last couple of months.
I also really prefer stock Android and the whole Nexus experience. But I also really like new and shiny.

I don't see why not... ginormous screen and great speed.. what else could you ask for.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
I would definitely say that is a awesome option. I have had the note 2 for 2 weeks now and absolutely love it. As stated the screen is great, especially for watching videos and reading web pages. What really does it for me though, is the battery life. At 3100mah, it has the largest battery life of any phone in the US currently on the market. I can easily make it 27 hours with out charging it and thats with moderate-heavy usage...and I am not even rooted.
If my dad had offered me the same deal that you have, I would jump on it.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
So he's just gonna give you his Note 2 when he upgrades, or wanting you to buy it? If he's giving it to you, what is there to question? Of course take it! It's a huge upgrade over the S3!! If he's wanting you to buy it from him, then it depends on the condition of the phone and how much he wants for it.
SwiftKey'ed from my White Sprint Note 2 using XDA Premium
I'm thinking more along lines of StangLifeMike. Free versus buy from father.
I'm not going to say it's leaps and bounds over the S3. The GN2 has a quadcore CPU, bigger screen, bigger battery, Spen, and NFC chip on battery cover. There are few other detail differences. Beyond that, it's more just software and a lot of that is the same.
If it's free, why not try out the phone for a week or two and see how works for you. I would even suggest to your father to give you a two to four week trial period if you have to buy it. Keep the S3 till you decided it's for you. If you don't like it, then you can go back and return the phone, and your father can sell it or send to Sprint for credit on his bill. You may have pay an activation fee when you switch phones, but I think it's only thirty five dollars.
For many of us GN2 owers, we wanted a big screen. Some like me, also wanted a quad core CPU and LTE access. Others wanted the Spen. So, your question is actually unanswerable because we don't know how you use your phone, what you want in a phone, or your priorities in it.
