How the heck do I restore my Kindle to stock - Kindle Fire 2 Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting

The main problem is that the threads already on here mostly have dead links so I'm trying to piece together various files I can find.
I have factory cable and fastboot drivers set up
files I have are :
boot.img
recovery.img
system.img
backup.sh
and restoreme.bat
One problem I run in to is that when running the batch file it says my system is too large.

wrong forum/ needs move to Q/A

the reason your restore isn't working correctly is you need something called a "sparse image".

I believe you could just flash the update http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201016370
via twrp. Thats what I did on 1st gen kf.

Kindle Fire Rooting Issues

Well given that it wont let me post in the direct topic this is related too because in order to post in development topics it says I need 10 or more posts I will attempt to explain the issue I am having without writing a novel. I am attempting to root my 6.3.1 kindle fire using kfu, the drivers seem to be installed properly, and my kindle is showing up in the program under normal boot 4000, I attempt to use option 2 and it ends up telling me it cannot download file, the file it is looking for is twrp, I download the file manually and it still complains. I then rename the file just twrp as it is named twrp-blaze-2.0.0RC0 and I keep the original ext type. I go to install it goes a little further and I receive the message MD5 does not match, is there something I am doing wrong ? I've tried downloading and renaming the md5 also, but still get the same error. I then press enter to abort, and my kindle comes up with the blue boot screen, I then reload kfu and select the option to set it back to normal boot, and im then good again. I am soooo lost now.
I would suggest getting into fastboot mode (if you are able) and installing twrp manually.

Q16: What does it mean when my device is stuck at the Kindle Fire logo?It depends on which Kindle Fire logo you're talking about. If you're talking about the Kindle Fire logo that stays brightly lit without any change in brightness, it means the device is in fastboot mode. Just change the bootmode to normal or recovery and reboot. If you are unable to change the bootmode, then you need to fix your drivers. If the Kindle Fire logo you're talking about flashes and goes dim after being brightly lit for a few seconds, then your device is trying to boot normally to a malfunctioning operating system, likely caused by not wiping the data partition (factory reset) before flashing a ROM. If that's the case, you will likely need a factory cable to get into fastboot mode so you can access or (if needed) install custom recovery, then reinstall a ROM properly.Q17: What can I do that will fix 90% of all Kindle Fire problems?Get access to custom recovery and reinstall a ROM, making sure to wipe the data partition (factory reset) first.Q18: Where do I find information on some of the various commands and how to use them?[GUIDE] Kindle Fire For Beginners – Post #3Q19: Where do I find information on how to use fastboot mode? [GUIDE] Fastboot ModeQ20: How do I install a custom ROM?[HOW-TO] Root / Install a ROM / Unroot / Revert to Stock (A KFFB Supplement)Q21: I need to get a ROM or file onto my Kindle Fire. What are the various methods of doing so?You can download the ROM or file onto your device via the Internet. You can use an app like Wifi File Explorer to transfer the ROM or file to your sdcard over wifi. While booted normally, you can mount your sdcard as a USB storage device and transfer it from your computer. If neither of those options are available, you can use ADB to push the ROM or file to your sdcard or use the “Mount” function in custom recovery to mount your sdcard as a USB storage device and transfer it from your computer.Q22: What can I do if I am unable to mount my sdcard to USB in recovery?[HOW TO] Fix "Failure to mount" sdcard, system, data or cacheQ23: I like the stock OS but is there an easier way to install Google Play, Google Apps, Disable OTA updates, change wallpapers, etc., rather than doing it manually?Install MoDaCo while in recoveryQ24: Where do I find information on how to restore the Kindle Fire to it's original unmodified state?[HOW-TO] Root / Install a ROM / Unroot / Revert to Stock (A KFFB Supplement)Q25: I tried to restore the stock OS and now my device is stuck at the Kindle Fire logo. What happened? It is most likely that you forgot to wipe the data partition (factory reset) in recovery before flashing the stock update.zip. As a result, you will need a factory cable to get into fastboot so you can reinstall custom recovery and flash the update.zip properly.Q26: What is a factory cable? What is it used for? How do I use it?A factory cable, not to be confused with the OEM USB cable that comes with the Kindle Fire, is a USB cable made to emulate a Motorola factory programming cable. With the Kindle Fire, it is an easy way to access fastboot mode, especially when no other options are available. To use it, while plugged into your computer, simply plug it into a Kindle Fire that has been completely powered down.Q27: Where do I find information on making or purchasing a factory cable?[Info]Making/Using a Factory Cable - or - SkOrPn Q28: What needs to be wiped when installing a ROM?When installing a minor update to a ROM, it is generally considered safe to just install the ROM without wiping anything. When installing a major update or a different ROM altogether, you must, at the very least, perform a factory reset in custom recovery, which wipes the data and cache partitions. Not doing so will usually result in major problems.Q29: I tried to install a ROM and now my device is stuck at the ROM's boot animation. What happened? It is most likely that you forgot to wipe the data partition (factory reset) in recovery before flashing the ROM. If you have FireFireFire installed, you can use the power button at startup to access custom recovery and reinstall the ROM properly. Otherwise, you may need a factory cable to get into fastboot mode so you can access or (if needed) install custom recovery, then reinstall the ROM properly.Q30: Is it true that letting the battery die will reset the device and fix whatever problem I'm experiencing?NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! The flash memory storage of the Kindle Fire is capable of holding data without ANY power until your grandchildren's grandchildren have their own grandchildren...probably even longer. Not to mention, a dead battery will cause much bigger problems than you ever had to begin with, on top of the problems you had to begin with. Whatever problem you're dealing with, it is always best to avoid letting the battery die at all costs.Q31: Why is my boot logo flashing every 5-10 seconds? You have a near dead battery. The most effective way fix it is to power the device down by holding the power button for 10 seconds, plug the device into a power source, then IMMEDIATELY hold the power button until it shuts off again. If it shuts off and stays off (no display, no led), let it charge for at least half a day. Otherwise keep trying, or get another battery.Q32: My Kindle shows the boot logo for 20-30 seconds and either goes to a black screen or reboots itself. You either don't have a ROM in place or your ROM is seriously malfunctioning. If you have FireFireFire installed, you can use the power button at startup to access custom recovery and install a ROM . Otherwise, you may need a factory cable to get into fastboot mode so you can access or (if needed) install custom recovery, then install a ROM.Q33: When my Kindle Fire boots, a message keeps popping up, preventing me from doing anything, how do I fix it?This is either caused from not wiping the data partition (factory reset) in recovery before flashing a ROM or you installed an app that is incompatible with the Kindle Fire and it is causing problems. If it the latter is true, use ADB to access the shell and locate and remove the offending app. Otherwise, if you have FireFireFire installed, you can use the power button at startup to access custom recovery and reinstall the ROM properly. If not, you may need a factory cable to get into fastboot mode so you can access or (if needed) install custom recovery, then reinstall the ROM properly.Q34: My Kindle Fire does not power on or show any outward signs of life; no display, no sound and no LED when plugged in. What does this mean? There was a problem while installing a custom bootloader, or the bootloader partition was, in some way, compromised and the device was shut down before it was fixed. If the device is a 1st generation Kindle Fire, you have to use Firekit or usbboot along with the shorting trick to reinstall the bootloader. If the device is a 2nd generation Kindle Fire, unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it.Q35: I have a question about a particular ROM but I can't post in the Development section. What can I do to get the help I need? The Development forum is for sharing ideas on development. If you have a question about a particular ROM, ask it in the Q&A section. Contrary to what some may believe, the Developers of this community are very aware of questions being asked in the Q&A section, especially when it comes to their ROMs.*Forum Rules | New Users Guide | XDA Tour | Report PostsThis FAQ is part of a Recognized Contributor Group Initiative. Hi guys I no longer own a KF1 I have a KF2. But I am wondering if anyone would be able to confirm that /sys/class/leds/led-green exists? I am planning on building an app that connects up to your notifications and allows for the use of the charger light as a notification light. And of course it will require root

head here.
there are some kitkat rom for kindle fire. take note that there is a new development for kindle fire:
read THIS and THIS, please read carefully and throughly.
as for otterX partition there are two type of partition.. larger system partition (smaller data partition), and smaller system but larger data partition.
as for file system there are ext4 and f2fs..
choose which one you want to use first, and then ask or if you already know, download the correct bootload, recovery, and ROM that support it.

[Q] Terrible Kindle Fire (2nd gen) issue that can't be resolved

Hi guys I'm new here but not to rooting Android devices and such. I had a XDA account back in the Windows Mobile 6.5 days but I have no clue what happened to it so I just made a totally new account. I have searched for this issue top to bottom and I cannot find a solution.
So for about 3 weeks now I've been having this problem with the Kindle Fire I got for christmas. It's not bricked, but I tried to switch to the AOSP stock JellyBean 4.2.2_r1 ROM from CM10.1/SGT7 version9. When I did this the kindle seemed to booted up fine, and when the setup process was done I had no Navigation Bar or a Status Bar, also causing the installer to malfunction and give an infinite installing screen (forcing me to reboot due to there being no Navigation Bar.). I thought to myself "OK I'll just reinstall CM10 and everything will be normal." Nah. The same problem was experienced when I finished the setup after reinstalling CM10. So I tried flashing an earlier version of CM10. No dice.
When I switched ROMs I made sure I wiped everything from System to Devlik. Still having the same problem. I have twrp 2.3.3.0 atm and I noticed that when I boot into twrp, off deck it says "E:Unknown File System: 'datamedia' " in the log. I also noticed that when ever I format something it says "Using rm -rf on......" So I decided to go and disable this as it might be why I'm having such issues. I went to settings and tried to disable this option but it wont let me disable it (as in it wont let me deselect the "Use rm- rf instead of formating?" option.).
When this happened I decided to look for an update for twrp to fix this issue. When I found the update to 2.4.4.0, it's only apparently able to be installed via fastboot. I as of now do not have a fastboot cable, nor can I make one. I would buy one, but money is a bit short. This also brings me to my next issue that I have searched to no end for.
No matter what drivers I install for my kindle Fire, my computer asks to install new hardware when I plug my kindle in. This is just for USB mounting. I haven't even tried ADB drivers yet. I can't mount USB storage in android or twrp. Twrp says "E:Unable to locate volume information for USB storage mode." When I am able to finally get some good drivers installed and working, only 30 seconds pass before they stop working and I'm not able to do anything. This forces me to transfer all files in ES file explorer over Wifi (which has to be installed manually by downloading the apk and copying it to the system/app folder and rebooting.).
After all this occurred I decided to go back to the stock Amazon OS and unroot to start from dirt. I went to Amazon's website and downloaded the 10.3.1 update for Kindle Fire second gen. It downloaded in .bin format so I just renamed the file update.zip and copied it to the root of the SDcard. After all that I booted into twrp and tried to install the ROM and it gave me this:
Installing '/sdcard/update.zip'
Checking for MD5 file......
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found.
assert failed: is_substring("Otter2", file_getstring("/proc.product_name"))
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Error flashing zip 'sdcard/update.zip'
Udating partition details...
Once this happened I promptly searched the error on google. There was nothing exactly pertaining to this issue, so I searched the error in general and found that it happens a lot with ICS roms. They were all however errors that dealt with the system name being wrong but that's not exactly my problem is it? I even tried modifying the Update-script but that only gave me an infinite blue kindle logo screen.
If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. This is my first run with any kind of tablet. I would like know how I can restore it back to the stock Amazon OS. If so how, I feel like I have tried everything.
Do you have a fastboot cable? First, I recommend that you get one.
Then, your best bet is to completely restore from stock and start over using the kindle fire restore utility in the development section.
Read my last post especially
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035047
The update.zip isn't going to flash for you because of the asserts set in the updater script. Basically, once you flashed cyanogen your device no longer identified itself the same way.
The problem you have with formatting isn't a bug. You would be screwed if TWRP let you uncheck the box.
The E: thing is normal and not an issue..

Alright so I need a fastboot cable, and to restore to factory settings. I'm guessing TWRP would be gone when I do this right? Also Thank you. I think I'm going to stick to Amazon's OS for a while untill I can figure out the drivers.
Yes. Twrp will be gone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
I think the fact that CM10 changes the device name is the reason why I have so many driver problems. So I'm going to stick to Stock Amazon untill CM10 is on it's final release. Is there any way to change the device name back to the original? The only difference is a space between the names is Amazon Kindle Fire 2 and Amazon Kindle Fire2(on CM10).
The device name change doesn't effect the drivers. That only effects the update script. Once you are stock the device name will revert back
Make sure you have uninstalled all previous drivers for the kf.
Then make sure you used the drivers I suggest at the end of that thread.
99% of all the issues I see for this device are just driver problems.

Are you sure that it doesn't? Because as soon as I installed CM10 all my drivers were suddenly incompatible.

So you are probably using the Google device drivers from another phone or windows update or such. Cm10 drivers seem to work out of the box, but of you want both to work use my method.
The name change isn't what effects the drivers, it's the operating system that effects the drivers needed
When I first set up my system I couldn't access the devices USB Mount on stock but cm was OK. I went back and followed my own instructions... Now adb, fast boot and USB mounting works from both oses

[Q] entire system wiped no os stuck at screen

recently while "toying" with some system files (which i shouldn't have) i deleted my kindle fire package installer thinking that i could still use my
google play installer well i was wrong . so long story short i wiped my system using twerp now ever time i run at 4000 (normal boot) im stuck at title screen and cannot connect to usb.
Key notes:
1.I have twerp
2.my entire system is blank from what i know (although it has title screen and basic boot)
3.im stuck on title
4.i have a usb cable for it (not factory cable)
5.im scared as hell
Unless you have FireFireFire (blue Kindle Fire logo) installed, you need a factory cable.

If you used KFU to flash TWRP and root then it is my understanding that you have FFF. Excuse me if this is a silly question, but why not just mount sdcard in recovery, place a ROM on your internal storage, and gapps, and then flash both of them after doing the necessary wipes? You may lose some if not all of your data, but at least you Kindle will be fixed
Let me know if you need more detailed instructions.

Kindle Fire rebooting - trying to go back to stock with TWRP

My Kindle fire kept shutting down and rebooting so I am trying to erase and go back to stock with the latest Kindle Fire update.
I have TWRP v2.5.0.0 installed and downloaded the kindle fire update from the Amazon website:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200790620
I renamed the file to update.zip and placed on the kindle fire via USB port. I get "error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/update.zip' . I made sure there were no hidden extensions on the update.zip when I renamed the Amazon update bin file.
what should I try next? I did a 'factor reset' from TWRP and it will no longer boot into the Kindle OS (which is fine as it rebooting all the time automatically anyways). However, I can not flash the Amazon rom to get working again.
Can anyone please help? I have spent many hours with no success so far.
Thank you

Let me understand this it loads to the system momentarily then crashes and reboots or never makes it to system boot?
If it makes it to system boot race the device as fast as you can to factory reset and reset it if it never boots to system for even 20 seconds or so you need a factory cable http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392693 post #9. in order to install TWRP and fff again .
Once in recovery you will do a factory reset and wipe everything except your sdcard prior to flashing stock. At that point you are better off flashing prerooted stock there is a new 6.3.3 available.

I can no longer boot to the Amazon Kindle OS because I used 'factory reset' in TWRP 2.5 which appears to have erased it. If there is a way to restore from this point please let me know.
I can still boot fine to TWRP so I should be able to work with it still, correct? I installed the Android SDK and use 'adb devices' which says:
Lists of devices attached
0123456789ABCDEF recovery
If TWRP would use my bin file that I changed to update.zip then I think I could reinstall the factory image with no problem.
What other things can I try?
Thanks!

Since adb works use adb to push another Rom to the device. Look at general section kinfaun's Kindle Fire for beginners and how to flash a ROM if not in awhile I will help you push one to the device.

Thank you

you need TWRP 2.2.2.1 or lower to install an unmodified Stock update.zip
but you can install my [2014][Pre-Rooted][Stock]System Version 6.3.3-Original Kindle Fire Only
just download to pc> connect kindle to pc>
in TWRP select mount>check sd card>select mount usb
copy preroot.6.3.3.zip to sd card folder
unmount sd card>select install
When you go to mount make sure system and Data have no checks in the box either.
Holy crap that worked!!! Very easy!!
Thank you very much!!

I did a factory reset too, as I was interested in going back to stock. Now mine won't boot to Kindle OS, just to TWRP. I tried the 6.3.3 pre-rooted and Modaco, but it still won't boot. Seems like a similar issue but I can't figure it out. I appreciate any help!
