Set wanted action in /system/usr/keylayouts/generic.kl

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish but I presume button remap is what you're looking for.
You need two apps: Keytest and ES Explorer. You NEED TO BE ROOTED in order to change the bind actions!
Open Keymap app and press whatever button you'd like to remap, whether it's a separate remote or the official pad, and write down the "scancode" (it's just a number between 1-300 I think).
Now open ES Explorer and open the file /system/usr/keylayouts/generic.kl as text file. Before this step, make sure your system is R/W so you can modify system files. You can enable RW in ES Explorer root options. Now on the left side of the screen there is the scancodes and on the right side there are the binds(actions that are launched upon pressing the key equal to the scancode on its left). Now find the scan code that matches to the key you want to remap(scan code you wrote down on the previous step) and change the bind action on its right. Alternatively you can find the bind you want your key to launch and just replace the scancode with yours.
Reboot and voila.

Hi!
Is it somebody using any kind of Button Mapper? And how it works for you?
I have tryied few:
Vito Button Mapper didn't work at all.
Dabble launcher ... this soft can see only 4btns: GPS, Recording, Internet and Camera (Recording didn't work properly, gives me some kind of mistake with buttons.exe)
And last one what I tried it was AE Button Plus (but I didn’t have enough time to take a closer look on it)
So, what is you experience? Any luck?

In the past for the S200 (PROPHET ) we used a very nice applet, Softkey applet.
I am wondering if anyone has used that on the ARTEMIS.

No, I am not looking for soft key applet ... My Soft keys working fine (and I have already installed soft for it, it comes in the rom) I can change them as I want ... But the question was: That I want to find soft which gives you opportunity to do a: Double click, Press and hold and etc.
Thanks ...
AE button plus
Here's an older reply of mine to a similar request for a button mapper.
Must have application for onehanders is a small utility called AE Button Plus at http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php. This allows you to map any number of system functions and applications to buttons (each button can acquire 3 more functions by double, triple and long press). For instance, I have mapped the mouse courser to a double click of a button. I have also mapped my ok button so that it really closes applications on a long press.
I know I sound like a sales rep but I am just a appreciative user.

jokkk3r - You are getting the buttons.exe error because you had Vito
Button Mapper installed at one time. I assume that you uninstalled it after you found that it didn't work (I did the same) - however, even after uninstall of Vito, any button that is not remapped by another app or by you through the standard WM5 button console will be stuck with the registry values that were assigned by Vito. So when that button is pressed again, the registry is telling it to look for the Vito software (called buttons.exe) that you have uninstalled. Hence, the error "buttons.exe not found."
Long story short, just disable any button mapping app you have running and then use the WM5 console to remap all problem buttons (even if it looks like they are already set.) Then start using your button mapping app again and the error should be gone.
By the way, I had the same problem with my record button (on press and hold) with Double Launcher. Single press, double press, and triple press would work, but press-and-hold would give me the error. That's how I found this solution. I still use Double Launcher despite the fact that it only sees 4 buttons (4x4=16 mappings is more than enough for me to try to remember! ) As I said - to get the press and hold function to work, you have to first disable DL and remap that function to whatever you want within WM5 - then use DL to remap the other 15 functions and the one you mapped in WM5 should remain (just don't assign anything to record button press-and-hold within DL)

SPB pocket plus
softkey applet lets you change only 2 soft buttons
And SPB pocket plus do the rest of work - 6 other buttons are remmapable
And SPB plus also give you the really close applications button and many many more...
I`m using softkeya applet + spb pocket plus - it`s great
Instead of IE I mapped the alt-tab button
Instead of GPS - close app button
Instead of camera at the right side - rotate screen
Left soft key - Explorer
Right soft key - Contacts

Glad to help! Have a great day!
Okay I have 2 questions. How do I get to personalize button to serve it original function? And how do I get the www/com button on the hardware keyboard to say its original function as well?
Use the attached program. I can't remeber where I saw it (either somewhere on xda or another forum). I decided I like CM7 better so I haven't used it for awhile. I have no idea on your other issue.
Well after I typed this on my phone, I can't attach a file. When I get to computer will upload on this thread
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Use these 2 APKs. The keylogger will tell you the value of the button, then the button mapper can change what that value does.

Sorry about the delay
Here is what I have for the personalize button.
With the launchkey app i cant seem to get it to serve the "Personalize" function. It just gives me a menu when i use it... Could you explain how exactly you get it working?
Yes, once you run the program - you need to set which application you want the program to use. Once set, then when you press the button on the screen, that application will be launched.

I was looking to change the user configurable buttons on my Desire Z but couldn't find a easy guide or simple solution. I started to experiment a bit. This is what I found out:
To change the layout you only need to things:
1. a rooted phone
2. A program like Root explorer with R/W permissions
Then do the following:
Go to system/usr/keylayout and open the file for the layout you are using in a text editor (in my case this was the WWE version)
I then changed 'user 1' to 'HOME' and 'user 2' to 'BACK'.
I did a soft reset and I now use the user 1 button to go to the home screen and the user 2 button to go back
note: This guide is problably written a 1000 times but I couldn't find it so I hope it's my first real (small) contribution

Thanks for the guide! And actually, this method can provide some neat tricks!
For example, I personally never use the search button. So instead, I can change the Search key to USER1 and now the search key is a User-Assignable button!
EDIT: It appears that the Search hardware key and the Search touchkey have different key mapping ID. But the virtual Search touchkey doesn't seem to be listed in keylayout at all. Weird.
There's an app for that
Also, AFAIK it should be possible to remap the capacitive search button.

The capacitive search button is 217, which is the same as the hardware search button. But my hardware button is doing what I assigned it, while my capacitive one is not doing anything.
It's either not linking, or my phone's capacitive search button is broken.
How can I make the search key to open recent app (the one where u hold home key and come out a recent app)? Thx

I think it's a bit more difficult, you should look in Andromadus thread where someone did it, there's a zip to download...
edit: here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516942 the zip is attached, don't know if it works with every rom, surely with andromadus, but we are OT, sorry.

Why didnt i think about this sooner :O going to try this right now =D
I'm looking for an app or a tweak so I can assign search to triangle or square, also so it can be more compatible with games that don't recognize square and triangle.
First off you have to be rooted, then go into /system/usr/keylayout. Edit "keypad-zeus.kl" with a plain-text editor.
Replace "key 308 BUTTON_Y WAKE_DROPPED" with "key 308 SEARCH ALT WAKE_DROPPED" to make the triangle into a secondary search button.
Replace "key 307 BUTTON_X WAKE_DROPPED" with "key 307 SEARCH ALT WAKE_DROPPED" to make the square into a secondary search button.
If you want menu instead of search, just replace SEARCH with MENU
EDIT: By the way, the number of spaces don't matter. Also, make ABSOLUTELY sure the file's permissions stay the same (owner=read/write, group=read, others=read) otherwise you will not be able to use the buttons until it's corrected!
How about using the triggers to switch pages on the launcher? I'm trying to make an Xperia Play optimized interface.

I'm not sure how possible that one is, unless your launcher specifically allows switching pages via hardware keys
I'll check some of the free launchers and see if they do.
EDIT: LauncherPro can use the trackball to scroll through screens, I'm not sure if movement to the left and right can be mapped with the triggers or emulated on the touch pads. I'll look around and see if I find anything, if you already know, let me know.
Is there a list of button functions somewhere that we can assign? Camera, menu, music player, etc.
Triangle works great as search btw! Thank you

This wouldn't be much help since you need the search button, but I think there's a launcher out there that will replace the search button command to any app/activity installed. I also recommend the Camera Mod app from the market that was made for the Xperia Play, it will let you snap a picture using the right trigger.

I was just wondering if there were anymore default functions that could be assigned, not necessarily to a 3rd party function. The camera mod is great! Wish the camera could zoom though :/
I'm generally very happy with my galaxy note 10.1, but often find myself unintentionally pressing the home button or menu/back button. This happens especially often in portrait mode, but also in landscape mode, as I tend to hold the tablet with one hand with my thumb on top.
I've searched the forums, and haveroot, but with the kitkat update, I'm not sure what the proper way to mode and disable capacitive and physical buttons are. Even if I lose some screen space, I'd prefer to have soft keys like a nexus tablet, for ease of use in both portrait and landscape mode.
All help and leads very much appreciated!

[Q] how to space onscreen navigation buttons (softkeys)
Digging around the Internet and other forums, found the answers to my questions (since solutions for other galaxy devices work on ours too). So, in the spirit of sharing,
So, assuming one has root and a file explorer to exploit root and edit texts,
To disable the capacitive menu and back keys:
Add "#" in front of "key 139 menu" and "key 158 back" in the Generic.kl file in system\usr\keylayout folder.
To disable the physical home button:
Delete "WAKE" behind "key 172" in the gpio-keys.kl file in system/usr/keylayout/ folder.
To add onscreen softkeys for back / home / recents:
Add "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" to build.prop file in the system folder.
One remaining problem, as you can see in the screen shot below, is that the soft keys are spaced out as if the tablet was a phone.
If anyone knew how to fix this, I'd n really appreciate the help! Thanks
