[APP] AOSP Messaging (quick emoji, softbank, quick reply, gestures, etc) - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Themes and Apps

I am done getting back into themes or apps. I was actually kinda enjoying it again after 3 years of not doing it...but the attitudes of others (namely xda moderators and other themers and fanboys) is enough to make me puke. I will no longer support this app or any other app or theme that i have nodded for the community. I will only be doing this as a hobby for myself and will no longer share with the community.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

Does this have pop up reply?

Yes. Quick reply. Even turn on lockscreen if you wanted.
And reply...read...or call in notification pull down

Can you reply from the notification bar? Or a pop up box?

Both.
Quick reply has a setting that pops up a reply window. Or in notification has option under it. Hit reply and the quick reply box pops up.
Try the app. U can go back if u don't like it. It's not permanent

so if i install this on note 3 will texts still appear on my lock screen or is that feature gone?

It's off by default but you can turn on quick reply in settings and there is an option to check wake up on lockscreen. Personally I don't want my phone to wake up but if u do u can turn it on.
However the pop up won't display on tw lockscreen. It displays in notice ti on pulldown. If u unlock phone the pop up is there waiting for your response

Right but will the texts be listed on lockscreen like normal tw? not just in notification bar?

yakitori2 said:
This is based off of 8sms app available in the Play Store. I will try to update this when there is an update to the app there. I created a kit kat style MMS icon though. Other than that..no other changes were made to the base app.
Need a tester for flashing in SS. I have not tried it, but i dont see why it wouldnt work. Feedback would be appreciated if you do it.
Known Bug:
- Touching your own picture in messaging view will FC contacts (this is a TW issue not the mms app)
Safestrap method
1. Download zip. If you are on odex rom...flash...if not...you can open zip and delete SecMMS.odex.bak...then flash. (not really a must, but its in there)
2. Reboot..Open the app and go to settings. Go to mmsc settings and enter http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms See screen shot below. Don't check allow mms over wifi..VZW doesn't allow it. Only need mmsc info below for mms to work.
3. Check stand alone in settings for the app. (Important)
Non SS method (need a file manager with root access ..I use Root expolorer myself)
1. Download zip...extract the apps. Copy MMS.apk to /system/app. Change permissions to rw-r--r--. Rename your stock SecMMS.apk and SecMMS.odex by adding .bak on the end of both of them.
2. Reboot...Open the app and go to settings. Go to mmsc settings and enter http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms See screen shot below. Don't check allow mms over wifi..VZW doesn't allow it. Only need mmsc info below for mms to work.
3. Check stand alone in settings for the app. (Important)
Enjoy!

Your own contact pic? This is why fc happens on tw rom because Tw contacts creates a "device" contact for yourself called me. It's not associated with Gmail. Pretty stupid but that's how they handle it

good news all! I got my sdk / java etc installed and an apktool that I am successfully decompiling and able to edit apk files...so I am going to be theming this.
Gimme some time...Been outta the theming game for about 2 years lol.
Should be able to turn this apk into something a bit better than the crappy dark theme that comes with it. lol. Stay tuned.

aight...got my apktool rockin now. Im good to go!
Havent themed a long time, but its not too bad really. V2 is up in OP...as well as a couple screen shots. Enjoy guys and girls!
Same install instructions. Its not a signed app. However...if you with to install as a normal app you CAN...just extract the MMS.apk...download zipsigner2 from play market and sign the app...then install as a normal APK. You can do that no problems...then setup MMSC the same as everyone else. If you want to use as a standalone...you can "turn off" your mms app in settings (if it will allow you to..IDK..im rooted so I go the system route for cleanliness).

all i need is google voice integration. and i am set on messaging.

OK..I didnt like the FF000000 backgrounds in message list view because the app doesnt have a message view background option when decompiled. So I changed the backgrounds to transparent so that it flows with the holo theme.
Anyway...the app looks much better IMO. I removed the previous versions and put V3 final in the OP.
I will update screenshots shortly.
EDIT:....fixing one thing first...hold tight

If you want to have a solid black background in mms download gravity box module for Xposed framework and checkblack background for the system holo and it will be all black

[MOD] AOSP MMS w/ Quick Reply and iOS Emoji [01/17/13]

ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING. WORKS WITH DLK7/DLL4 INTERNATIONAL 4.1.2 AND ATTK7 4.1.2 BASE ROMS. ONLY CONFIRMED WORKING FOR AT&T!
A big thanks goes out to Adrynalyn. Without them we would not have the framework needed for all of the features to work!
Downloads (CleanROM 4.0.5 is DLL4)
ATTK7 Stock Theme -- ATTK7 Transparent Blue Theme -- ATTK7 Blue Theme -- ATTK7 ICS Theme
DLL4 Stock Theme -- DLL4 Transparent Blue Theme -- DLL4 Blue Theme -- DLL4 ICS Theme
DLK7 Stock Theme -- DLK7 Transparent Blue Theme -- DLK7 Blue Theme -- DLK7 ICS Theme
Instructions
1. Make a backup
1.5 Using a file explorer, navigate to root/system/framework and copy "framework.jar" to your external SD card. This is in case the mod doesn't work!
2. Download correct zip
3. Using a file explorer, navigate to root/system/app/ and rename "SecMms.apk" to "SecMms.apk.bak"
4. Reboot into Recovery
5. Flash zip
6. Reboot
7. Enjoy!
FAQ
Q: It doesn't work!/How do I uninstall this?
A: If it doesn't work for you then simply replace your framework.jar (located in root/system/framework) with the one you backed up before flashing this. If you want to uninstall the mod then replace your framework.jar with the backed up version, rename "SecMms.apk.bak" back to "SecMms.apk" and delete "Mms.apk" from "root/system/apps". If for some reason you didn't backup your framwork.jar, you can find it in the same location in your current ROM zip.
Q: The Quick Reply options aren't showing up in my notification area!
A: If this happens simply touch the notification with two fingers and pull down.
Q: I can't send or recieve MMS!
A: If your MMS won't send then long tap on the message, tap edit, and then resend the message. If this is still not working, try adding the Cingular APN. (See screenshots below)

I have used one on the last 3 ROMs I've used. I started with NOTEorious, then Asylum TJ, now CleanROM. The NOTEorious AOSP MMS cwm fix has worked great on all the ROMs i've used. It's transparent too. Props to cjsspape, or whomever made that file for him. it is not my work, I'm just mentioning the solution to your question.....
The only thing I have an issue with is when I tap a contact icon (within the AOSP MMS app) it says contacts have force closed, other than that it is fully functional.
Here is the link to his thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984546
Remember, just download the MMS FIX and flash the FIX only. That is all I do.
Oh, you have to remove SecMMS.apk manually too....otherwise it will still show the TW MMS, not the AOSP mms.

Does thos fix the low quality mms problem? Where you get that low quality slideshow. Instead of the real picture.

I thought touchwiz did not allow expandable notifications. Why not just go to an AOSP ROM? I suspect that even if someone gets it to work, the experience won't be the same as with AOSP.

That's because you also need the AOSP contacts, which also needs an AOSP dialer, which also needs an AOSP gallery.
Thanks for this though. I will look into it and perhaps make it flashable for those who want it to also remove the secmms.apk automatically.

I use expandable notifications all the time. The only thing I want from AOSP is the messaging app and the features that come with it. I've tried a couple of AOSP ROMs but ultimately I like stock better because of TouchWiz features. I looked up what I wanted and saw progress on other TouchWiz devices so I figured it was possible. Obviously it is possible it just needs a little work. Also, if you're making a flashable zip could you look into changing the theme back to stock AOSP MMS?

Sending pictures stalls sometimes. You need to long click the message, click edit, and then send it again. If quick reply doesn't just up just use two finger and pull down on the message. It'll pull up the quick reply options. I've managed to get the default AOSP MMS as well. I flashed the fix mentioned in the second post and then booted up my phone, pushed the MMS.apk from the JellyBam ROM to system, renamed the default MMS app (Secmms.apk) to "SecMms.apk" and then rebooted. Everything works minus the small MMS issue.

I was able to confirm this works.
1. Reboot to recovery
2. Flashed the noteorious mms fix (which came with the transparent mms app and Blue icons)
If you like it, go to 3 otherwise go to next step.
2a. Extracted mms.apk from jellybam rom and moved it into system/app
3. Rebooted.
The mmsms get stuck the first time around. Strange issue, since if you edit and resend, it works.
Confirmed Quick Reply works and mmsms shows preview in notification.
Thanks!

[MOD] Add Mobile Data & other Toggles to Quick Settings (Requires Sqlite & Root)

[MOD] Add Mobile Data & other Toggles to Quick Settings (Requires Sqlite & Root)
Updated to add the other missing toggles. Thank you Poetic Vampire.
Update 5-21-14: I finally updated to 4.3 and had to redo this mod. Just confirming it worked for me.
DISCLAIMER: This was done on a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4. Model # SGH-M919. It may or may not work on other devices. If you have another device and it doesnt work thats probably why. So please be careful. This requires root as well. And please make a Nandroid backup before making changes. Of course please dont blame me if your device goes thermonuclear. It worked for me and it should work for anyone running stock rooted like I am. Again please take the time to do a Nandroid backup first just in case. It takes a little more time, but is worth it just in case you have an issue. So far I haven't had any issues if you name or spell something wrong. Unlike a build prop theres less chance of a brick. OK, so onto the Mods.
Hello all. After reading several threads about asking about the missing data toggle from the notification area I did some research and testing and figured out how to get it back with root and sqlite editor using the stock rom. I remembered a thread about a similar issue with the Verizon S4 and it missing the Wifi toggle. I used the same steps and the sqlite editor from here and was able to add the data toggle back.
Here are the steps I used for the Mobile Data Toggle, read on below for how to add others. (Thanks to The Poetic Vampire)
1) Download sqlite editor app. I got it from here.
2) Open the app and give it root permissions. It should populate a list.
3) Scroll and Tap the "Settings Storage"
4) Tap "Settings.db"
5) Tap "System"
6) Scroll down until you find "notification_panel_active_app_list", tap to highlight it. I noticed its a little hard to get it highlighted because it seems to want to highlight the one under it. So you might have to tap the one right above it to get it highlighted. Make sure its the notification_panel_active_app_list, and NOT the notification_panel_default_active_app_list. I picked the wrong one the first time and it didnt work.
7) Once it is highlighted tap the phones menu button.
8) Tap "Edit Record"
9) You'll see a list of all the toggles that are currently enabled to show in notification area.
10) At the bottom of the list add ; and the words MobileData then another ;. So it will look like this at the end. ;AirplaneMode;MobileData; Then press Save.
11) Reboot and you should have a data toggle now. You can now use the edit feature and move it anywhere you want in the list of toggles.
Note: After I edited it and rebooted the "notification_panel_active_app_list" moved closer to the bottom of the list. So if you go back in and dont see it scroll further down.
OK. Thanks to member "The Poetic Vampire" you can also add several more of the missing toggles. Use the same method as above. Just add the words exactly as below to get SmartPause, Brightness (Thanks Mister Junky), and Wifi Hotspot. You must end the string with ; for this to work.
SmartPause;
Brightness; (mentioned by Misterjunky)
WiFiHotspot;
UPDATE: Im getting a lot of requests for the flashlight toggle so I decided to add this to the OP so that others with the same question have the answer without having to read the whole thread. As far as I know this isnt possible using this method. In order for it to work it would have to be a toggle that was originally there, but removed. Like T-Mobile removing the Data toggle. Im sure it is possible in a custom rom, but that is way out of my expertise. For flashlight toggle I use Power Toggles in the play store. It works great to set up almost any toggle you want. And highly customizable. Ive added a pic here to show the way I have Power Toggles set up. The lightning bolt shaped toggle is flashlight. Hope this helps.

I was actually wondering this too. If there is a toggle for the flashlight, then all we would need is the exact name of it. Then follow the same instructions. Im not sure Ive seen any galaxies with the flashlight/ torch toggle? I use Power Toggles to turn on the flash light for now. I dont think there is a "stock" way to add the flash light toggle to the dropdown. I have seen custom roms with it though.
Finally! I've been waiting for this mod since day one! No more widgets clogging up my home screen.

I did too. I tried adding torch, light, flash light, flashlight, and maybe a couple others and none worked. Unless it is a stock feature that was removed its not going to work unless it gets modded into a rom. If someone can figure out what the devs did that added it to their rom we might be able to figure it out. Im by no means a dev.

This totally works and I modified some other settings while I was at it. Thank you so much!

[HOW-TO][GUIDE] ANY app FLOATING and RESIZABLE MULTI-WINDOW revised

This should work for any 4.1.2 rom for the note 2 that has a working Xposed installer and MULTI-WINDOW capabilities.
THIS IS FAR FROM PERFECT
I have been wanting to make my device float and resize any app. I didn't put too much effort into it until recently. I finally got the settings down to make this possible.
Please keep in mind some apps (especially stock ones) don't like to be resized so they will almost become unusable if they are resized to small, this is one of many reasons why I previously said that this is far from perfect. On the plus side at least it will let you do ANY app !!!!
I used NEXT LAUNCHER PRO for this cause it supports MULTI-DPI a lot better than TW does, but you don't have to it will still work with TW but it makes some of the drawables look weird.
INSTRUCTIONS:
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO A CWM OR TWRP BACKUP AND VERIFY THE BACKUP WAS DONE PROPERLY BEFORE YOU CONTINUE
1: Install XPOSED INSTALLER V. 2.4 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401
Thanks to @rovo89
2: Install XPOSED APP SETTINGS V. 1.6 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2072081
Thanks to @Tungstwenty
3: Install XPOSEDMULTIWINDOW240.APK from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2048668
Thanks to @Scalee
Thanks to anyone I may have forgotten
MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO PROPERLY INSTALL THE FRAMEWORK, APPSETTINGS.APK, AND MULTIWINDOW240.APK BEFORE YOU CONTINUE
Once the above are installed and working properly as per the instructions in the OP's of the DEV's mentioned above, you can continue:
At this point REBOOT your phone just to be sure all the installations and settings stuck. Open Multi-Window and add an app to it just to make sure everything works properly so far.
Open the App Settings App in your app drawer, should look like the one in this picture:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Search for and open Android System, should look like the one in this picture:
At the top there is an ON/OFF slider (as seen in picture below), slide to the right to turn ON.
Then, CHANGE the DPI to 240, and the Screen (dp) to 800x1280 (also seen in same picture below).
At the top there is a save button, now is the time to hit that, a pop-up will show that says:
Apply Settings: Also kill the application so when it's relaunched it uses the new settings? Click YES
Immediately press and hold the power button to REBOOT.
After REBOOT open the App Settings App in your app drawer again and search for com.sec.android.app.FlashBarService, should look like the one in this picture:
At the top there is an ON/OFF slider (as seen in picture below), slide to the right to turn ON.
Then, CHANGE the DPI to 240, and the Screen (dp) to 480x854 (also seen in same picture below).
At the top there is a save button, now is the time to hit that, a pop-up will show that says:
Apply Settings: Also kill the application so when it's relaunched it uses the new settings? Click YES
Immediately press and hold the power button to REBOOT.
All done!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now to learn how to succesfully make any app that is added to your FlashBar, FLOATING, RESIZABLE.
Turn on MULTI-WINDOW and INSTEAD of dragging out the first app, just CLICK on it and it will open in full screen, It doesn"t look like it now but this will be your first floater lol.
Next drag any random app (like settings or something) out of the FlashBar and drop it.
Now you will notice at the top of the first app that was added to the MULTI-WINDOW now has a PIN on the top left.
Click on the PIN to make it GREEN , FLOATING and RESIZABLE now. To move it grab it by top near the center and pull it around. To resize grab the edge of the left, right, or bottom side and resize.
Next, touch the random second app that is now full screen and hit the back button once and it will go away.
Now with the floater at the bottom, open FlashBar again, find the next app you want to FLOAT, and once again just CLICK on it and it will open in full screen,
next drag any random app (like settings or something) out of the FlashBar and drop it again.
Now you will notice at the top of the first app that was added to the MULTI-WINDOW now has a PIN on the top left.
Click on the PIN to make it GREEN , FLOATING and RESIZABLE. To move it grab it by top near the center and pull it around. To resize grab the edge of the left, right, or bottom side and resize.
Next, touch the random second app that is now full screen and hit the back button once and it will go away.
Do you see a pattern now, do for any and as many apps you want open at once.
Also after you make an app floating you can press the pin again and watch the pin turn GREY and the app will stay floating in the background instead of foreground.
GREEN pin = app floating in foreground.
GREY pin = app floating in background.
When all said and done you should be able to do this with any app:
PROFIT!!!!!!!!!!!
The above mentioned module called XPOSED APP SETTINGS is a wonderful tool for changing individual apps to make them visually fit your liking. Everything I talk about in the next few paragraphs is in direct relation to XPOSED APP SETTINGS.
NOW FOR A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE
Screen density
The quantity of pixels within a physical area of the screen; usually referred to as DPI (dots per inch). For example, a "LOW" density screen has fewer pixels within a given physical area, compared to a "NORMAL" or "HIGH" density screen.
Font Scale
The size of the font in the amount of pre-allocated space; measured by percentage.
Resolution
The total number of physical pixels on a screen; usually known as Screen (dp).
Xlarge Resolution
extra large resolution
Locale
This allows you to change the language of any app individually; without changing your whole system to a different language.
Fullscreen
Force the app into fullscreen mode while hiding the status bar that is easily accessible by pulling down on the top of the screen.
Prevent the app from going into fullscreen mode. Keeps status bar on screen while the app is open.
No Title
Removes title bar from app. Every app I chose this for force closes so don't mark my words.
Keep Screen on
This will NOT let your screen turn off while the app is on the screen unless you hit the physical power button.
Show when phone locked
Leaves app open in the foreground of the lock screen while app is open and on the screen
Orientation
The ability to change whether an app opens (portrait or landscape). The dropdown consists of
(default app rotation). Uses whatever the default orientation that is already written into the app
Normal rotation = Will rotate screen normally
Always portrait = The ability to FORCE the app into portrait mode ONLY
Always landscape = The ability to FORCE the app into landscape mode ONLY
Force auto-rotation = The ability to FORCE the app to auto-rotate (will edit after tested).
Resident
Keeps any app in memory (running in background).
Insistent Notifications
Insistent notifications repeat their audio, vibration, and light settings continuously until canceled. These Notifications are typically used for events that require immediate and timely attention; such as an incoming call or the ringing of an alarm clock.
No BIG Notifications
Makes the app notification in the notification dropdown smaller, like a small preview instead of the normal show everything notification.
Permissions
Allows you to revoke permissions from any app of your choice.
If you've come this far than you probably know that some apps look like they might be sized bigger or smaller than other parts of the phone.
That's because the system doesn't change the DPI and Screen (dp) automatically with some/most apps.
After all the changes, the GALLERY app title bar is too big, meaning the DPI did not auto adjust. In order to make everything fit in the title bar you have to lower the DPI to anything lower than 240 for THIS app ONLY.
Every app will need it's own custom setting in order to get it the way you want it. Please DO NOT post that this exact setting did not work for any other app cause it MAY or MAY NOT. Consider yourself warned

HOW TO DISABLE XPOSED APP SETTINGS
Being that this MOD is not perfect, sometimes you might need to disable Xposed App Settings if something goes wrong (example: I made a change to an app that I didn't like, after reboot I went to change the settings back and noticed the app didn't show up in Xposed App Settings, even after several reboots).
TO FIX THIS:
Go to XPOSED INSTALLER in your app drawer (some roms like jedi master have the xposed installer built into a custom app like jedi tricks app that @ptmr3 made for his roms) anyway once in the installer, click on MODULES at the top right corner, then uncheck the box next to XPOSED APP SETTINGS.
NOW REBOOT. You will notice that all the Xposed App Settings aren't enabled anymore.
Then go back to your Xposed App Settings app and find the app you had problems with, that started this disable process.
Now change the settings back to a known good configuration. DON'T FORGET TO SAVE before exit.
Immediately go back to your XPOSED INSTALLER, click on modules and recheck the box next to XPOSED APP SETTINGS to renable it.
NOW REBOOT AGAIN
If you followed the instructions given, properly you should have everything back to the way it was before the problem occurred.

I'm on master 16 with sabrekernel 35.6 with the ext2 system data and cache mod.
All of this is amazing with these .phones. I will be finally getting an mhl adapter in the near future. They aren't expensive.
I hadn't looked into Master too much because of the lack of multiwindow, but read in the dev thread that it was working past a certain version. So multiwindow (and this thread's particular mod) does indeed work on 16 for you?

xposed installer/wanam work

So far, I have enabled 4 way reboot. everything seems to be fine so far. I'm on the supplied stock rom. Taking this slowly as I do not want to encounter something I can't repair. As knox is tripped, you know the rest...
also I have reduced dpi to 300 from standard 320. Will try 280
Charlie
update, 280 seems fine as well...
obviously root is needed
Reducing the dpi scales the fonts and other ui elements down, right? Could you show a screen shot?

It does. However, you need to be careful as to how low (small) you want things to be. Proceed slowly and reboot frequently, as this is a new devise and we do not know the limits of the os. If you crash it, your only recourse will be odin; and sometimes it doesn't work

I've been trying to customize the quick settings section of the notification shade using wanam but haven't had luck getting all components to change colors. The light background of the volume control seems to be tied to a variable not in the theme section as is the green indicators (the color I hate most on the quick settings tiles).
270 DPI is an excellent resolution. See mine below. PLENTY of real estate on that screen now! Oh yeah. And still got room for more.
A good app that I've tested and used is: jrummy app called "ROM toolbox Pro" however only for changing the DPI. Usually I just edit the build.prop file as well too. Xposed installer using the module "App settings" works perfectly to do this.

Hello,
I am a newb in the whole android community (1 month use, but i am a quick learner).
I have already rooted my SGNP and I am trying to research more about what i can and what i can NOT configure in my Note Pro.
For example, thanks to your post here I learned that someone else tried to install Xposed with the Wanam module.
I search a lot for more post of this kind and came up with almost nothing so thats why i think that it will be much appreciated if there will be more sharing of experienced SGNP users of Xposed modules that are safe to use.
I think that my main concern is the lack of understanding about compatibility between other android devices. For example: Can i search for a specific module and find that it works on Galaxy Note 3 and know that it will also work on my Note Pro?
If anyone can help more with links for:
SGNP apps for rooted device
SGNP Xposed modules
SGNP custom ROMs
SGNP Bloatware system apps that can be uninstalled
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Ray
Primarily what I look for when installing Xposed modules on my Note Pro is feedback in both the description in Xposed Installer for the module and in the XDA support thread for that module on whether or not it's compatible with Touchwiz. If either sources say to stay away I heed that warning.
I'd say if you're unsure of compatibility of a module it doesn't hurt to ask here to see if anyone else has installed it.
As far as bloatware removal I've been hesitant to do so; I've frozen a bunch of things but the only applications/services that I've deleted outright is Knox related ones since freezing those would not stop their services from loading up as cached apps. My issue with trying to uninstall things is I don't want to have to rebuild all of my customizations if I have to factory reset, nor do I want to take the time to do nandroid backups prior to every tweak just to see if the tweak works.

Question: I've made the DPI 270 and the icons are indeed a bit smaller, however now I have a large dead space at the bottom of the screen and also the homescreen. Is there any way to extend the Grid or something? I know the area is usable because I've used Nova and Apex and can use the entire screen, but I'm trying to use the TW Launcher. Screenshot attached.

As the expression goes, you can't teach an old dog new tricks . . TW launcher may have the new magazine UX feature but as far as custom grid sizes to leverage more screen space you're SOL. Switch to Nova or Apex or some other custom launcher.

[Q] question about changing screen size

I just got the Note 4 today coming from the Note 2. I rooted and put a Rom on the Note 2 (slimbean) and it made the icons, ui, everything a lot smaller. Going on the Note 4 everything is a lot larger and I can't seem to find an option to change the ui size. I don't have a comparison screen shot on me at the moment but if you Google slimbean Rom you can get a better idea of what I'm talking about.
Is there anyway to change it? Rooting method is acceptable.
Dpi ....
Sorry I don't know the name for this type of thing.
Here's a photo of my Note 2 with slimbean

Here's stock on the Note 4
Notice how everything is a lot wider open and smaller on the Note 2?

Is there any tutorials on how to do this? I tried to do it on ES File Explorer but the root option isn't available and I just rooted it last night

I use FX Explorer. Also get FX Root.
Open FX >System (Root)>system (click the lock at the top right to show it unlocked).
Open build.prop and click the edit icon at top right
Change ro.sf.lcd_density=640 to a lower variable. 3dot menu and Save and reboot.

This will most likely cause you to get Xposed as your phone and camera will seem fubar'd. If you want to keep it below 640 youll need to research Installing Xposed and getting the module App Settings and change certain features like phone and camera back to 640.
If you keep Xposed youll need to head back to build prop and change ro.securestorage.support=true (near the bottom) to false to get rid of laggyness. Youll also want to go to Applications Manager and go to All and find Shealth and HealthServices and delete data and reboot.

I changed it to 480 and it shifted the lock screen to the bottom left hand corner. It made everything smaller at least but I just changed it back to 640. The lock screen doesn't seem centered anymore.

Ive never had an 'off-centered' lock screen. I know not what you speak of.....

Im assuming youre back at 640 and its still looking odd? Screenshots?

Maybe I'm just going crazy. It just doesn't look centered anymore. Looks like it's shifted to the left a little bit
Yes I'm back on 640. It was the only setting I changed
360 DPI

Here's 360. 480 is basically the same deal.
If it wasn't for the lock keypad being down in the corner and possibly being able to make the keypad numbers bigger I'd probably keep it
Oh well
Please check the thread/guide I made last year for the note 3.
The same process apples here just some numbers change.
I will make a new thread with a guide shortly with alot more information.
For now refer to this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507369
Download Xposed Framework
Download the "App Settings" module
You dont need to edit build.prop, or download Rom toolbox to do so.
Just run App Settings and change com.android.systemui DPI to 480 ( thats what I prefer)
If apps appear cropped ( like camera- com.sec.android.app.camera) change those individually to DPI 640
dp = px * 160 / dpi
640 is the "Stock DPI" within App Settings
480 is what makes the phone look "good" to me
320 is very small- think super tablet mode.
Experiment!
And remember you may need to edit/patch your google play store if you want the "tablet" version of apps to match your new dpi.
The LOCKSCREEN will not be centered if you change build.prop or the DPI of systemUI.
It may annoy you if you use fingerprint unlock..
I believe it can be addressed/ fixed but it would require recompiling/reprogramming systemUI and Im not really a programmer, just a tinkerer.
If I get time I will try to find a way to bridge that gap down the road
Thanks @chaosrecords . I've always used swipe and nothing else. Never knew of the lockscreen flaw.

Yeh. Dialer needs to be put back to 640 via Xposed via App Settings and itll fix that.

I understand your anxiousness to get backto the higher resolution (lower DPI) i came from the SGS3 and Slim was my DD also. Maybe in the future something will come along, Rom or Mod.
There are some apps that are tied together with touchwiz..
Contacts/ Dialer/ recent calls for example ( any app with a tab)
The dialer on the lockscreen may also be offset though.. I use the 9 dot grid ( and now fingerprint)
The lock screen requires editing and recompiling framework...
I found a thread here. not sure if it works
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2473618
I will try this out later and if it works i will post a guide specific to note 4 with screenshots for all the tweaks i did..
If I can safely do it, ill find a way to post the file here as well.
I mod my phone with so many tweaks I really should just figure out how cook my own rom up... Right now Im using Bonsai- Stockish Deodex for the Note 4.. Great starting point.
That seems like a lot of work
