Wow, I love this board...!
Opera mobile 10.1 beta works like a charm on my Galaxy S Doc Froyo XWJPO v7.6.2. It even downloads flash-videos (e.g. tagesschau.de) and opens them with the internal video player. Only live stream is not working.

Works amazingly fast and smooth on my galaxy s. I love it! It doesn't play all our even most flash content so it can't yet replace the stock browser, but once plugin support is there, I'll only use this one for sure!

I has an option to use compression or not.
What I like the most is reflow on pinch to zoom same way as on my nexus modded aosp stock used to be. Very familiar as symbian user as well.
No flash yet. Hope it comes.

Also for those not familiar with the opera you can change opera user agent by opera:config menu (many other settings as well like cache, ram management etc.). User agent 2 will give you desktop and will auto launch youtube app so it's still better quality than what you get by default on mobile site as a consultation for not having full flash.

How do you get to the advanced settings? I cant seem to find it on this beta release
Gave it a quick try. Very good but still not perfect.
When zooming in the images and text are blurry for a second and it only updates after you stop zooming, unlike the stack browsers where it's instant.
It is very smooth when scrolling though.
Also in landscape mode, I can't zoom out fully. This is weird, why do they do this? It's not as bad as Opera Mini was in landscape but it still prevents this from being as nice to use as Dolphin HD. I want full control of zoom all the time, not just in portrait mode.
Also can't import bookmarks from the stock browser. Hope they add this ability.
Needs an exit button for when you don't want to leave it in the background, like Dolphin HD. Sometimes you want to close it so it doesn't return to it's previous state and rather starts 'fresh'.
Will keep it to see future updates and maybe if I want to preserve bandwidth when using mobile data. But Dolphin HD will stay as my default for now.
I have a problem on JPA... Internet browser won't save as default, no matter how many times I set it >_<

I can zoom in and out completely in landscape and in portrait
Imports bookmarks and speed dial from desktop version. And unlike chrome to phone it actually works.
Agree with you for the rest except this is my browser of choice now. Waiting on beta 2

Depends on the site.
As a test go to myadsl.co.za.
In Dolphin HD (and I assume default browser too) when I hold the phone in landscape I can see the whole width of the site.
But on Opera I cannot, it refuses to zoom out that far.
It also seems to take longer to load the page (using Wi-fi), regardless of the Opera Turbo setting. This might just be someone else in the house using the connection at the same time as me though.
I'll give it a go later and maybe post back my findings. Opera Mobile on Symbian and Windows mobile were very good and i'd tried Opera Mini on some dumbphones as well and it worked well. I hadn't tried Opera Mini for Android as I didn't like the idea of only being restricted to using Opera's proxies (I assume that was the only option).
Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta for Android direct link from Opera or pick a version yourself over here.
No flash integration.... sigh.

I really was interested in having the youtube app playback youtube videos instead of the stock player. i changed the user agent to 2 as you describe above and it didnt work. i tried clearing cache, cookies, etc and restarting my phone. i have a htc droid eris running 2.1. can you provide more details on how you were able to get the youtube app to launch automatically from opera mobile?

Sorry seems web ignores uset agent string right now but if you go to bottom of youtube page and select full site next time you launch opera it will remember it and launch app respectively.

Thanks for trying, but it didnt work for me. it must have somethign to do with the url on youtube. It tried to launch the youtube player as you indicated but i got an error that it couldnt connect to the server.

I tired string 2 as discussed above but it didnt work. i am a bit of a noob, so can you go through the exact settings when i do about:config? is there an index of what user agents the numbers correspond to? for example, when i use skyfire, the videos launch just fine in the youtube app. however, i agree with you abotu opera mobile and this is the only thing i need to be all set.

So what is everyone using for an EReader on these tablets. I am a WM guy looking to get one of these or suggesting it to a coworker. She wanted an ereader machine and was looking at the NookColor or Cruz Tablet then I saw these and I want to be able to show it to her.
I use the Nook app and it works pretty well. Anything I have book wise that isn't ePub I use Calibre to convert it. Probably the most used app on my device.
I use Kindle on my A101 and I am very pleased with it! It seems to work flawlessly.
Be aware that these Archos tablets seem to have a problem with some readers cutting the last line off the screen due to the way Archos implements it's standard buttons.
i use aldiko, it imports epubs which i convert all my pdfs, etc to through calibre.
it doesn't cut off lines on my a70

I'm using laputa and calibri to convert files in epub version. it's quite perfect...
Although it's not ideal, eReaders such as Aldiko have options for margins etc on the screen which could help combat the last line of text being cut off.
Anyone using Aldiko on their Archos? If so do you have any problems?

rcftw! I am using Aldiko, and no setting changes were necessary. I just installed it and it worked.
Ahh, totally missed that line of your post first time round.
Just ordered my A70 on Friday (pixmania for £156, all out of stock now), so excited to get it an Aldiko is one of the main reasons.

I tried Aldiko from the Google Market and the software buttons cut off the bottom of the text. The only option was to increase the margins and font to as large as possible. Didn't make for a very good reading experience.

This is true, but it did crop the top in the main bookshelf view... which meant the titles of my books went missing. Really wish Aldiko worked. It's the prettiest of them all for sure. Such a nice smooth scroll too.

I use Kindle on my A70. Probably the most used app I have. It lost the last line running 2.1 so I had to use Aldiko. After 2.2 posted Kindle works flawlessly. YMMV.

I'm looking forward to getting an Archos 101 and sticking all my 1000+ page school books on there. One thing that bums me out is that I haven't found an app for android that supports chapters in .pdf like adobe reader for windows does.
And converting to ePub makes it lose it's formatting, so I can't, for example, just go to a certain page, and have it be the one I intend it to be.
Anyone know of anything that will fix what issues I'm having?

that is weird. I am running a 7/2.2 w/aldiko and yeah the main page titles are messed up, but not cropped. All my covers work so that is what i was reading for the title anyway. the books themselves read great...
maybe it's to do with ads? i'm using aldiko premium, maybe the free version has adds that gets in the way? idk...

I'm pretty sure all the free books with Laputa are public domain. You can find those same books for free at Project Gutenberg, and even through the Kindle app (again for free).

I'm in much the same boat.
The other thing I haven't found in a PDF reader is the ability to have a fixed zoom level and switch pages at that zoom level. Once you zoom in a little, the two apps I've tried (DocsToGo and Adobe's own app) want to float around each individual page.
What I want is to center at, say, 125% zoom and just be able to switch pages with every one of them rendered centered at 125%.

1) Is there a way to add a plug-in to the browser to behave like iOS's Safari "Reader" functionality? Something that will basically display the text of an article without all the fluff (like ads and whatnot)?
2) The fonts used for the different sites I frequent seem to be a bit off. Are there fonts missing from the stock android that I need to add?
3) Zooming-in to a piece of the text by double-tapping seems to be a bit off, for me its zooming in a bit more that it should leaving the last few words of each line of text outside of the view. Am I doing something wrong here?

1) "Reader" functionality? some kind of jailbreak hack? Anyways, I believe you can disable images in the settings of browser (theres a ton of settings there so go check them out). As for ads, there are some apps out there that do that.. but as a dev, I'm pretty against it so maybe someone else will point one out
2) Thats even more weird.. the Galaxy Nexus does use the new roboto font and it does use this to render websites. But you're saying some websites appear off? Got any examples?

For #3 you probably need to turn on word wrap/reflow or whatever it is called. Occassionally doesnt work and you need to refresh on dolphin browser.

For issue #1, there is! You don't need an account, but I would highly recommend signing up for one at readability dot com
Go the Android Market and search for Readability. Download the Readability Bookmark app and create the bookmarklet. This will create a bookmark with no icon called Readability. Then just go to any page with boat loads of text and images and ads and garbage and click the tabs button to show the bookmarks button, click it and then click the Readability bookmarklet.
It's a terrible workflow but it does work. I've been using it the past couple of days and it's very comparable to the Reader button in Mobile Safari.
For issue #2, I don't know of anything like that.
For issue #3, I have the same problem. Double tap on a column of text and the column fills the screen with just a few words off of the edge. I've played around with the browser settings and I can't get it to work. Pretty much any site with text, to answer kwazi's question.

It just formats the page to make it all text with no images or ads or anything else that doesn't belong to the article you're reading. Its like the Readability plug-in for desktop google Chrome and Firefox.

Thanks. Do you think this can only be done under Dolphin browser and not the stock one? I've just checked the settings of the stock browser and didn't find that option.
I have a question, will Last Pass be able to plug into it something like it does with Dolphin?
After further inspection, the font looks just about right when zoomed in (for English at least). I think my eyes are not used yet to see cramped text on this display
So I guess the only thing that I still can't figure out is how to make the double tap zoom work properly.
Anyone who uses Chrome on their PC will know what I mean when I say is there any Android browser that allows you to search different websites from the navigation bar? For instance in desktop Chrome if you want to search youtube for Lady Gaga you just type in "youtube.com Lady Gaga". Is there any Android web browser with that kind of functionality? Android Chrome doesn't seem to do it.

I use the stock browser and Chrome in that way with no problems. I think, there is something wrong with your settings.
I just reinstalled Chrome on my phone and typed in "youtube.com Lady Gaga" and it didn't work, it just searched on Google. Is there a setting you have to turn on?
As far as I know, the mobile version is fairly new and didn't see any options to enable it. Desktop chrome came with it already functional. The only mobile variation I found was using Firefox w/ the youtube add-on. Which sucks because I hate Firefox.
I love the dolphin browser you should try that one not sure what you are trying to do.

In Chrome on desktop, you can / have to go to options / search settings and set up these shortcuts (if not already present). I've only just started with new Android device - I assume there is a similar place to set such on handheld. e.g. On my desktop, type 'w' 'p' '<space>' auto-changes the address line to 'search wikipedia' (or like wording). I assume you see the same on your desktop when you type 'youtube.com', as per your message.
If nothing else, you can do '"lady gaga" site:youtube.com", in the mean time.

When I open links, regardless of the app I open them from, they do not open in Chrome or whatever I have set for my default browser. Instead they open a sort of overlay WebView window. To clarify, these are not opening in the apps internal browsers (Like what is available in Twitter or Facebook). I have cleared all the default handlers, changed default browsers, tried from multiple apps, but this continues. I even did a chat with Google support and they claim this is supposed to happen. I have a video below of what I'm talking about. In the video I am clicking a link and instead of Chrome coming up, a window appears on top of Twitter and the link is rendered there.
Does anyone have any idea what would be causing this?

I do not. Chrome is the only installed browser. Every app I have was also on my S7 before I switched and it did not have anything like this going on, even on the Nougat beta. I have never seen anything like this before.
Gotcha, and what app are you using to show the links to begin with? Sorry if I missed it in the OP.

This happens regardless of the originating app. It happens in Gmail, Inbox, Facebook, Twitter, my Reddit client, everywhere that has links that would normally be handled by the default browser.
This is part of nougat.. kind of.
Previously in android apps could use something called web view. Basically it was a built in generic mini browser that the app developer could customize to their liking and make it look however they wanted.
Now with Nougat they are trying to keep everything looking similar so apps can now use the mini browser thing which is part of Google chrome. Sounds like those apps your using might be using the old web view still

This is not a WebView window like I've ever seen. Nor is it a Chrome Custom Tab. I have never seen anything like what my video shows.
I guess I'm just going to have to do a screen share support call with Google and hope they have a solution, even if it is a factory reset.
Have you tried opening your Google app from the app drawer, going into settings > accounts and privacy, and disabling "open web pages in app"?

I watched your video. Yes that's different from what I get. Looks kinda cool. Looking forward to hearing what Google tells you.
A factory reset did the job. The only explanation I can think of is that for some reason my phone couldn't set a default browser. Anything that had an open to go from internal to external browsers (such as Twitter or Facebook) showed "Open in" instead of "Open in Chrome" even though my system settings showed Chrome as my default. Also, one of my default browsers listed was the Setup Wizard. I am thinking this is shenanigans from doing a USB transfer setup from an S7 on the Nougat beta.

Sorry to necro, but I have this problem now and I'm really not trying to factory reset after all the work I've done making this phone mine. Are there any developments on this? The WebView thing doesn't support YouTube which is killing me the most. A Google product that doesn't support YouTube...madness....
If anyone else finds this, disabling the Setup Wizard app resolves the issue. That app just tries to open all links rather than letting the default browser do the job.
