[Q] linux on note 8.0 - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Hi guys,
I am trying to get the note 8 to run Linux from external sdcard. I can manually mount the partition and debian runs ok like that. It is a little clunky, but worst case, it is not so bad. What IS bad is that I now cannot remove the external sdcard. Is it possible to partition the internal sdcard and run debian on about 1.5GB of the ~5GB of app space? This would cover pretty much every Linux app I would ever install.
Thanks,
-YH

Partioning new SD Card with S-OFF?

So I bought a new card (16gb) and none of the ways I have partitioned cards in the past are working...
ROM Manager can't do it, and in ADB it keeps coming up with ~#. I'm slightly lost on what I can do, it seems to be running everything just fine without partitioning, but I was under the impression that I had to partition in order to run CM7?
I swear I'm not this much of a noob.
Not sure how to partition, however...
Since I don't know how to do that, I'm assuming I haven't. But I AM running CM7.

You don't have to partition unless you plan on using a2ext, using part of your sd-card as your /system partition. If you've happily got all the apps you want and aren't getting "low space" warnings, you shouldn't have to worry with it.

I hope you meant /data/app
You don't need s off to do the sd card. It should work through rom manager, but if not, and you use linux (ubuntu, debian, fedora, etc.), you can use gparted to partition it.

Is there anyway to make by default install all my new apps into new external partition?

Use a Ubuntu Live CD and plug the SD Card into your comp using the USB adapter. The live CD can format the SD card into different partitions and the live CD also won't mess up your existing PC configuration. Hope this helps

[LOOKING FOR] App for SOLVE internal memory problem on my Desire..any idea?

Hello team / people, I'm just looking for an App for SOLVE my internal memory problem on my Desire cause I'm always getting LOW MEMORY SPACE on this device, almost of my essential Apps are installed on my microSD card, myabe there is an App for simulate more space on internal memory, like a partition or something that sucks microSD space and solve this problem, don't know, any idea? any help?
thanks for everything.
BR,
Yh partition ur sdcard
HTCdesire ~ s-off & rooted
RunnymedeAIO 4EXT
Try cachemate app in market. Gets u a bit more space n app2sd
HTCdesire ~ s-off & rooted
RunnymedeAIO 4EXT
I struggled like crazy with this problem before I rooted my phone and got an extra partition to store app data and cashe.
I guess you ask this question because you dont want to root your phone. I remember this thread from the time I used to struggle with this exact problem. Perhaps they have new ways to increase the int.memory these days.
(hope its allowed to post links to other forum)

The best way i've found this is to root your phone and install Cyanogenmod 7.1, and use an app available from the Play Store called S2E. You will need to prep your SD card though - I used a card reader, inserted it into my computer and booted off a Ubuntu Live CD, then use Gparted to make two partitions - one large main fat32 partition for music etc, and a 1GB ext4 partition after the fat32 one for apps. Once you have that, put it back in the phone and you can setup S2E to move entire apps to the SD card I have about 90 apps on there now, works perfect, makes the phone better than new! Hope this helps.

please please tell me more about it .. i am using latest version of miui. can i use S2E ? Miui already required a hidden partition for installation purposes. Do I need to create another on ?
Miui doesn't support S2E I believe as it designed for Cyanogenmod. There is another application called link2sd (I think) which does the same sort of job. I remember finding it ages ago and it not working well with Cyanogenmod though. Cyanogenmod 7.1 seems to be the most stable ROM around at the moment though, just a little slow is my only quarrel. This is from my experience anyway, haven't tried ICS ROMs. Tried Miui for about 10 minutes and didn't like it personally.
Try the ICS BCM 3.1U0
It IS working fabulous.
And it has a built in app called Mounts2SD. It seems that I can use both my internal and the extra partition and the space on my SD-card.
I highly recommend that you format your SD-card and get a 512mb partition. Then its smooth sailing.
Which ROM do you currently use?

Mount ext3 formatted sdcard?

Hi. Anyone managed to mount a sdcard formatted ext3 or 4?
I've got a 64GB card and don't want to use exFAT as I run Linux everywhere..
Thanks.

Yes. The removable microsd slot card.

This must be possible. The system partition is mounted ext4 (being a Linux based system, the kernel naturally has native support for it!)
Is the microsd slot always the /dev/block/vold device (in which case mounting will be easy), or is the Linux device mapper framework being used to control this? The mounting mechanism seems way more complicated than on my Asus Transformer. I just mount /dev/sdc1 on that.
This really annoys me. Android is built on Linux, but doesn't support mounting of Linux formatted sd cards out of the box. Up until recently this hasn't been a problem as you can just use FAT32, but now we are doing things like storing big HD videos on our phones, the 4GB file limit is becoming a serious issue. This is exacerbated for me by the other pain of MTP only file transfers which simply don't work under Linux.
Hint Google, don't grab a huge chunk of OS code for commercial purposes and then ignore the users of the very system you're basing your product on! Everything required is present and this all should just work for us Linux users.

[Q] Question about "on board" SDcard0 N5110

Hi everyone,
I was at a store today, looking at a Galaxy tab 10" running android 4.2.2.
What I noticed when I checked settings/storage, was that it had no more internal Sdcard0 but a full 16gb partition running the Android system and about 5-6Gb free space for additional programs to install??
So here is my guestion: is this possible on the Note N5110?
What I want to do (if possible) is to "delete" the "stock" SdCard0 and expand the internal 16gb internal mem to one partition.
Then, (if i'm correct) when an SDcard of 64Gb (or less) is inserted, it will be recognized as SdCard0 instead of ExtSdcard.
I have rooted my N5110 and changed the 64Gb to be Sdcard0 and the 10gb as ExtSDcard, but that's a bit buggy sometimes.
It swaps the SDcard0/ExtSDCard mem around from time to time depending on which program you start (very annoying).
Has anyone done this? Did I miss a thread in XDA?
I tried searching, but couldn't find if this is possible or not.
Hope anyone want to answer my question
thanks!!
Wow, nobody?
I'm sure you can "trick" the android os to use the full internal rom instead of creating partitions right?
if there is a thread I missed, please let me know.

There is a script that allows you to flip the sd for the internal, which then allows apps to be installed to the sd card. Dont know if this is the kind of solution you are looking for. ?...Check link below, its for the note 2 so any and all damages done are on your head....

Yes, i've seen that script, used it, it works fine.
but, what I mean is, is there a way to combine the internal (stock) memory on the device.
Here is how I see it:
the device has 16gb internal memory in total.
however, 6gb has been partitioned for the android OS.
10gb is your internal storage to use. (that's 6gb os partition and 10gb external partition = 16gb
so my question again, can I combine those tow to 1 partition = 16gb OS partition and use the external SD card I bought as sdcard0.
one more time;
current setup:
6gb OS
10gb = sdcard0
64gb = ExtSdCard
what I want =
16gb OS
64gb sdcard0
just simple math. but maybe not possible?
And thanks for your reply mygraine :good:

Partition Sizes

Curious if anyone has modified the partition table on the device? With the System taking up 4 some gigs... seems silly not to shrink it down a bit for more app usage. Any thoughts on this one or am I just thinking silly on it?
I think the same but i found nothing. I flashed a debloated rom for the 10.1 and now have 1.2GB free on system parts. I used titanium backup to transfer some app from data to system but it's boring. But it's nothing compared to my MicroSD card memory

I did transfer some apps over as well, or in reality can remove them because they sit on the SD partition because of updates (really wish it would just update to system by default). I know moving some updates over just screws it up, let alone just moving screws up the icons on the desktop portion.
I don't have a de-bloated rom right now. The way I see it, its being used or wasted at this point. Apps don't seem to be slowing it down, though im sure a few are running in the background, but nothing that has hampered battery life like my previous Nexus 7 (2013). This seems to do much better at not wasting power. Guess im not being as picky as I use to with random apps chewing up space.
I would of jumped all over a 32GB edition from the get go. Paired with a 64GB SD card, its win win. Even now it is, just can't install everything I want to in 1 go since most apps still are stored locally on the main internal SD Partition and can't be transferred over. I can live with it, and im sure someone will figure it out. I know I use to do it with an old phone that had, next to no internal memory (a loong time ago). PITA to update, but well worth being able to use the phone.
You can use FolderMount [ROOT] to create a symbolic link between internal SD card and external to move your application.
For example if you want your google offline music on sdcard you can mount /sdcard/android/data/com.google.android.music on external sdcard.
It is possible to do it for every folder so it solves the problem :highfive:

Yeah just read into that. Thanks for the link so it reminds me.
Course, internal storage is always faster But for music/movies obviously SD Card just works fine with that.
