[Q] Delete or change apk in Rom? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question.
I am running WanamLite 3.0 on my N7100. I have no problem with it, but I have modified SystemUI.apk (to have blue signal indicator bars) and deleted a few apk's in system/app.
As I want to make a new clean installation, I opened the rom with 7zip,and placed the modified SystemUI.apk and deleted the apk's I don't need in system/app. I deleted preloadinstaller.apk, too. Then, I flashed the rom with CWM (PhilZ).
To my surprise, the deleted apk's are installed in system/app and the SystemUI.apk installed is not the modified one, I repeated (reinstalled 2 times, but I got the same result. I checked the rom, but the modified SystemUI.apk is there and the deleted apk's are not there.
So, what should I do not to have preloaded apps come back? Can someone give me a clue?

[Q] visual voicemail apk w/ vanilla icon???

So I'm running cm6.1 and have sprint vvm installed and working just fine but I want the green vanilla icon instead of the sprint icon. Does anyone know of an existing apk with that icon already on it? I have already tried to modify the current vvm apk I have and replace the vanilla icon with no avail. For whatever reason when I change the icons in better zip, it does not save the changes. I have tried everything so now I'm hoping I can just find an apk that someone has already modified. Any help would be great!! Thanks!
Oh and I can't use 7zip because I'm on a Mac.
The reason the icon won't stick is probably because you've updated vvm apk. If you apply the icon to the apk in /system/app it won't work because the updated apk is in /data/app. Look for the vvm apk in /data/app and try that.
I just looked in the data folder but it is empty... hmm. And the current vvm app I have is stored on my SD card. I initially downloaded the original apk and then installed through astro. Also there is no voicemail apk in system/app either. I never imagined I would have this hard of a time! Lol any other suggestions? And thanks for the help thus far!
You don't have Sprint_VVM.apk in your /system/app folder? And there is nothing like com.voicemailblahblah-1.apk in your /data/app folder? I don't know if astro can read teh /data folder, if you see nothing in /data/app you need another file explorer or use ADB.
I am using the file explorer that came with cm6.1. When I access the data folder from the root it is empty. Would the fact that the voicemail app doesn't come with cyanogen have to do with it? I initially just took the vvm apk from fresh 3.4 and installed it through astro. And it worked just fine. So now I figured out how to add the. PNG files to the apk and save it successfully, however after I uninstalled the original vvm apk and install the new apk it says application did not install.. does that make sense? Lol
After about 30 failed attempts I finally got it figured out! I didn't realize I needed to delete the meta-inf folder before really signing it. Again thanks for helping!
Yeah, all your market apps are in /data/app along with any updated system apps. You can't see those apps with astro or the cm explorer but they are there.

[Q] apk images

Trying to edit some of the images of the yahoo mail app. The previous version I pulled the images I wanted to change from the apk, edited them (just changed the color) and pushed them back into the apk. Put the apk on my phone and installed it...no problems. Now yahoo released a newer verison of its mail app and I go to do the same thing. I used the 10 images I edited from the previous version and put them into the new version since the unedited ones in the new version were the same file names as the ones I edited. I pushed my edited images to the new version and sent the apk to my phone. But it won't install. I have tried everything I can find (or Google) and still the apk will not install. Attached are my two versions. The old version which has the edited images and works perfect, and the newer version that has the edited images and does not want to work. The zip file has the images I edited. Anyone want to tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Put it in system/app
Sent from my Samsung Legendary 4G, a Universe UTES phone, running "two.three.five"
Pushed to system/app, tried to open app and it gives an FC. I tried redownloading from market, backing up, copying and editing the backup and repushing to system/app (after uninstalling the untouched version) but still gives FC. I know its something with the edited images since the newer untouched version installs fine with no problems.
Did you sign the files?
Make sure there weren't any .9.pngs that you edited also. Those are special.
No I did not sign the apk. I was told before that you don't need to resign an apk, just check the "unknown sources" checkbox in the application menu under settings. But quite a few of these do have .9.PNG in the filename. I looked up DrawPatch9 images and am confused about what they are and how to modify a png into one. I am surprised the modded images will work in 1.3.6 and not 1.3.7.
So I googled and D/L'ed a signing tool, signed the apk (or at least the program told me it was signed) and tried to install on my phone with no success. I tried pushing it manually again and it gave an FC when I try to run it. Most likely the .9.PNG's are the problem. Anyone recommend a site/program to use to fix the .9.PNG's?

[Q] VeNuM ROM Question - Removed Apps

Hey guys, I just installed VeNuM's new ROM version, but I can't install the removed apk's. Any ideas?
Thanks.
Push them to the /system/apps folder and reboot
I use root explorer to do this

That didn't work. Maybe I'm not reading it right. Could you expand for a newbie?
Which apps are you trying to install?

You need to set the permissions too... after copying the apk to system/apps long click it and go to permissions and then set too: read/owner on, Group on, others on. Then Write/owner on (turning on by clicking the corresponding box). All the other boxes will be empty. Hit OK. This will make sense when you do it... Reboot phone... You should be good to go...
VeNum ROM Question
Again, sorry for being such a Noob here, but I really like this ROM and desparately want to use it.
So, you said to extract the APKs to the "system/app" folder. I didn't see it a "system or a App" folder, or I'm not in the right place. I am viewing the files structure via Root Explorer on my phone.
Thanks for the patience and the help.
All the basic Epic Touch apks. Weather, clock, gmail, etc.
Permissions
Ok, I found the files, placed the apks where you said to, changed the permissions as instructed, but the apk still will not install.
I'm trying to install the Samsung Weather apk. Some will install, but most of the original system apks won't.
Any clue?

Replacing apks in ROM zip.

Just wondering if it's possible for me to overwrite certain APKs in a ROM zip with custom ones that I've found.
Specifically, the inverted/blue MMS and unlocked Exchange Email APKs to put into my AOKP zip. I'd like to be able to do this instead of having to do it post-flash.
Thanks.
Yes you can,i make custom roms with every rom like this,it really easy.Just use 7zip and replace them, just make sure they don't have different names,to be sure i usually delete old apk's first and then copy new ones instead of replacing them.
This what i do:
1 Add or replace apk's in system/app folder and delete any apk's i dont want, this improves speed and battery life.
2 Go to system/media folder and delete or replace any unwanted ringtones and delete system sounds. You can also replace BootAnimation, zip in there for custom boot animation.
3 (Optional) go to /system/frameworks folder and replace framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk to use a custom theme, just make sure its compatible with the rom yore using.Oh,and replace SystemUI.apk in system/app folder.
And BOOM you have your own custom rom ready to flash. If you need any more tips just ask.

Resign them? You don't need to resigh them, just add the apk and that's it.
NOTE:
If you modify some apk files they will no longer install from /system/app folder and you need to resign them, but if you did not modify apk file you're good.
While rarely(about 5% of time) some apk's will not install from system/app folder.
Strange thing is that if apk wont install,if you modify it and not sign it it will install,it will install unsigned but will not install signed!
So try it,if signed apk wont install just unsign it(mod it with 7zip) and see if it does and vice versa.
But 95% of apk's will work in system/app folder with no signing or unsigning needed.Just place the apk in system/app folder and you're good.

Its nice but not really needed, plus devs can name same apk's with different names.I ptefer seven zip because it even tells you which apps devs added themselfs to the ROM.

[Q] Signing System Applications

I have modded my SystemUI.apk with the instructions found here. The only problem is that my status bar won't show up at all because I didn't sign it. Even when I did sign it though, it still failed to show up. I have tried signing all the .apks under /system/app/, and framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk under /system/framework/. When I sign all of them (tried with APKChanger, APK Multitool), the system just boot loops. The ROM I am using is a modified version of stock 2.3.4. Could the problem be that I have placed some downloaded apk files under /system/app/ (to customize my rom)? If not, what is the problem and what can I do to solve it?
Someone reply please?
you have to sign whole system/app folder with dsxida kitchen or use this
