[Q] Recomended anti theft app - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a Tab3 8" for my daughter.
If it gets taken at school I wanted to be able to track it down, shut it down, make it scream.
Any recommendations?

Is the touch screen really that fragile or am I missing something?

I have had my VZW TP2 for a while now, and while I try to keep it scratch free it has had a bumpo and bruise before.
Yesterday is fell while I was stepping out of my car. I picked it up, brushed it off, and got angry when I saw a small knick, maybe 2mm long, in the screen. Angrily I turned the screen off and put it back in my pocket.
About an hour later I went to use the phone, and to my suprise, no touchscreen! LCD is fine, no distortion or damage what-so-ever.
Is it possible for such a small knick to completely trash the touchscreen?
I have tried multiple resets and cannot get it to recognize anything.
Short of replacing the screen and/or digitizer, anything I can do?

Not sure if I would calling dropping the phone a few feet from up in the air onto what I can only assume was concrete and not pillows a small "kick"
It sounds like your digitizer is pooched. If your phones under warranty just sent it away to get fixed. It shouldnt shake loose like that I dont think. I know things happen and theres nothing you can do about it when it does. With my touch pro I had a silicone case for it I dropped it so much.. And by dropped it I mean like it would fly 5 feet or more and then the back plate would shoot off and the battery would fly out... not good to do once let alone multiple times! I was sick of my silicone case (which I got after dropping the phone probably a good 10 or more times) so I took it off, a week later I was out on my back patio and had my phone in my shirt pocket. I was on my knees and bent over to pick up something and it slid out. Fell maybe a foot and I picked it up and there was a crack across the screen.. Son of a B$%^&H!
Just happened to land on the corner perfect I guess... Regardless point of that story is I wouldnt call the phone fragile by any means. These things are beasts! But as we know... stuff happens.
Hope it works out for you.

disabling the menu button as onluck button

the desire owners will have noticed, that when you press the on/off button, the screen turns on and you will see the slider (with the time and date).
(unless you replaced it with an app or something).
now you can choose how to unlock it, either slide the slider down with your finger.
OR you press the menu button.
i have the desire in my pocket with the screen towards my leg (because it's more comfortable deu to the little curve on the bottom), and i KEEP pressing the f#####ng menu key.
in other words: my phone gets unlocked every couple of minutes.
my mates think its cool, because i'm calling the whole wide world from my pocket without using my hands or fingers.
but i don't like it, neither does my wallet.
i know there are unlock apps, but i'm not always sure what they do.
i'm looking for a hack/app that disables the menu key.
in that way the single and only way to unlock the phone is to slide the slider down with my finger.
so nothing will change EXCEPT the fact that the menu key can unlock the screen.
can someone please help me, because i'm really getting sick of it (even though the phone itself is absolute gold).
p.s. i'm not familair with rooting.
so you're pressing the power button, then the menu button in your pocket? how'd you manage that?
yeah.. i kinda should be in the world book of records for being able to do the impossible.
i made my last htc touch pro 2 brake it's screen when i flew off by opening the keyboard.
apparently the screen came off or a screw came of or something.
i'm good at that .
besides, i'm a big lad, and when i sit down the fabric of my jeans curls (english is not my native language, so i'm not to sure how to describe it), like a rinkle.
at the top it presses the power button (which gets pressed so bloody easily).
pressing the menu button is easy, it happends all the time apparently.
it happened before that i suddenly had a different background, deleted widgets, replaced widgets, called people, turned on gps, opened a program etc.
believe, i can get impossible things happen i'm just a professional clumsy dude haha.
but anyways, you got an idea?
I don't know how to disable it, but you could get a case.

I got one and they're pretty cool. Dirt cheap too.
oh right lol! i'd be careful if your pockets are tight, some people broke the nexus one screens with tight pockets, and my desire came with a warning to remove from pockets before sitting down
but i'm sorry i don't know how to disable it, i have rooted my phone and installed froyo which doesn't do it, but its not a perfect rom yet (certain stuff doesn't work)
If you keep the screen side against your leg, the screen will eventually curve in at the center. Happened to my N95 8GB. I can almost guarantee over time it will happen with the Desire. Dont ever sit on it. EVER.

i don't sit on it, it's in my front pocket.
but still, i understand what you're saying, and i geuss you could be right.
but then again, i bought a mobile phone so i could have a phone that's mobile.
and beind a man, i put stuff in my pockets, same with my phone.
so a phone should be made to be put in a pocket.
(not back pocket, because i'll crush it when i sit on it, but in the front pocket).
still, i would like to hear from somebody who found a way to disable the menu key.
it doesn't make sense to me at all, to have a touchscreen that you unlock with a button.....
still... nodbody seems to know anything as simple as turning off the function of a button....

To Claim or not To Claim PLEASE READ

I dropped my phone this morning getting into my car. It hit pretty hard upper left corner of the device. it actually struck the door sill panel the battery panel popped off and the batter fell out and the phone landed face first on the garage floor. I drive a 2010 camaro the car sits pretty low so it didn't have to far to fall. I have a zagg screen protector so no scratches on the screen nor did the screen crack or shatter (much to my surprise).
There is, however, a noticeable Chip on the housing in the Upper left corner above the HTC logo. This is surprising to me because I have heard many stories of the screen shattering falling on that part of the device.
My question is this. I have insurance on my phone. I am very anal about how my phone looks and operates and it having ANY scratches or nicks on it(nearly OCD) I have rooted the device, I have a great ROM i REALLY LIKE (kings unleashed rom Ultra Blakk R3).
Sooo.. Do i make the Claim?
Pro's:
Great ROM
Phone is FAST
Get a new or near new Phone (refurbished)
Phone may act funny do to the drop (later on)
Cons:
Backing up the Device (starting over)
Going through the Process of Rooting
Clearing the Phone back to Original Stock ROM
Spending the $100 Deductible (100 on bill)
I am sure I can think of more so this where i need your opinion folks.
Personally, I wouldn't claim that, because I don't see it worth 100$ for a new phone, for THAT. I'm a tech major, so I like my gadgets in pristine condition as well, but I couldn't justify it. And as far as backing up, you'd have to do a titanium for your apps, that's it. You couldn't restore your system settings cuz it wouldn't work on a new phone, just re-install the rom, and load your apps. As far as rooting, you can do it with unrevoked and be done in less than 5 minutes.
Overall: Don't claim.
I have only dropped my phone once but it was drastic, all the way from my pocket where i thought i was putting it, to the concrete...landed right on the corner and made a pretty good nick. Im not happy about it but my screen is OK and I certainly wont spend 100 bucks on a nick. also pondered a little touch up paint. If its acts up later...? dunno why that would occur cut OK, i would just make a claim then.
If you want to feel better just drop it again and make sure the screen shatters. Now you have more reason to claim it! I'm very anal about scratches and dings on my stuff it would drive me nuts.

I've taken mine back for unrelated reasons and got a new (well, most recent was a refurb) phone at $0 with insurance on a couple occasions. The phones weren't rooted when I took them in, by the way.
I dropped mine & it has a nick on the side that drives me nuts sometimes. I thought about pulling the battery during a radio update to try to completely kill it so I wouldn't have to pay $100, but my conscience along with worries of bad karma got the best of me, so I've stuck with this one. It runs fine, so I've learned to live with it.
I also learned to put the case back on if I have to take it off.
If you have the cash then get a new phone. You won't be happy till you do, you know that.

this describes myself well...
i say get a new one or wait for a new device and buy at retail.(I like being without contract)
Wait and upgrade to Evo 3D in two months. You might want to just put the phone in a nice silicon case so that you can't see the blemish.

[Q] Playing Games & Screen Wear

I am really stuck on Dead Trigger. It is such a fun game. My only concern is that over time I might wear out my screen. I guess that sounds kinda dumb but is it possible?I try not to press down when playing as I know it's just a touch screen, but it's kinda hard especially when you're fighting off hordes of zombies. LOL. So I was just curious if there is a shelf life for this sort of thing? Will the screen have issues from being pressed in the same place over and over?
Maybe... But with the quality that phones have to be made with, if the screen did wear down, you should be able to get it replaced. Besides, it would probably take so long to do, that by then, you will probably have a whole new phone.
From my understanding, phones these days should be able to take a fair bit of abuse. I doubt you will have an issue tho

samsung hardware is pretty flimsy and their quality control is terrible if you've seen the horrible blotchy spots in low brightness.
As long as you don't press down so hard that colors change you should be fine

[Q] My girlfriends Nexus 3 has a broken LCD but working digitizer

My girlfriend dropped her Nexus 3 GT-i9250M and the LCD drifted into black. The digitizer still works tough as I have gotten haptic feedback (vibration feedback) from randomly tapping away at the screen after booting and hearing the start up chimes. But I have been unable to put the phone succesfully into the bootloader and then recovery to factory reset the device.
The reason I want to do this is so that I can strip it for parts sell them on eBay and then use the money to buy another Nexus 3 for her. As the LCD & digitizer assembly costs only about $30 less than a full working used nexus, Yet all the parts sold individually including the LCD if bought separately cost about $300. If I part out the working parts like mobo mic speakers etc... the return would either greatly reduce or pay entirely for the working model based on current prices.
The other frustrating aspect is that USB debugging is disabled and so I can not use ADB to do the work for me.
So what I need is a kind user with the same device go through the steps (bar the reset I'll leave the phone alone for 10mins to ensure completion) noting the times and button presses through all the menus so that I can do this. Rather than leave it up to the new owner to search through or recover via a rooted app the boob shots of my girlfriend etc...
In closing, why it only costs $30 more for an entire phone is a sad state of affairs to say the least and blacklisted Canadian devices can be had for $20-$60 when they can be found. The fact that smartphones with screens made of so called gorilla glass or similar (aka chipmunk glass to me) rarely stand up to falls of more than 2ft and in the case of my S3 less than 2ft onto concrete. This coupled with the extortionate cost for replacements is one of the worst aspects of having a smartphone without encasing the sleek device in bulky non-pocket friendly and paper money puller armor, which also doesn't guarantee saving the screen from shattering as with one of my old EVO 3Ds
