I have a new Note 8.0. Rooted and stock.
If I install a custom ROM, will I lose all of the S-Pen functionality?
I am assuming that all of the Samsung S-Pen apps will be lost. As well as the Samsung keyboard that includes the pen handwriting popup.
What would I do to replace this functionality? Curios.

Samsung's touchwiz roms should have the smart pen functions built in. AOSP roms(cyanogenmod) will not. I am unsure if there is a workaround.
You still cqn use the pen, but as you mentionned you loose all the S pen apps.

If you install Civz-flex-beam or the Online X-Note roms. You will not lose any SPen functionality that you have on the stock ROM. All S-Note and everything works the same if not better than stock.
If you flash a Cyanogen ROM or any other AOSP ROM then you will be able to use SPen functionality on all Apps downloaded from Playstore; however, you will not have the S-Note and other Samsung apps. Also the option to hold the Spen button and capture part of the screen will not work.
Though You can create options for other note applications to pop up using "Note Buddy" or similar applications.

You MIGHT lose the apps depends on the build and how tech savy you are to trsnsfer apps and wok in when necessary. They have 2 sections original which is stock or very close to stock and just android development., which is more of the custom ROM area. If you are unsure ask the person who is responsible for the build via IM, and thank them for their time donate if possible. As always make sure it is a correct build for your device and backup before you switch, if you don't like it simply restore.

Anybody know if the auto launch of S Note when removing the S Pen can/does work on AOSP / AOKP builds of Android? I'm assuming that it will require a patch or an app to add this functionality to an aosp build, is there something out there? Also assuming you lose this function when leaving TW. Additionally I'm not looking to use a different launcher on a 'stock' device as I want to move to PA.
...sorry ahead of time if this has been answered already, did a search and didn't find anything.

SNote is a TWiz only app. The best available substitute is Papyrus... But the Spen detach sensor currently doesn't do anything in AOSP.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
Anybody have an in with the devs of Tasker or AutomateIt? ...Tasker's feature requests are closed.
Asking them to add an SPen trigger; set it to launch the Papyrus app would be perfect.
My phone (running stock, rooted 4.1.2 at the moment) is getting a little unstable, so I am going to wipe and start from scratch. I'd really like to go back to CyanogenMod-based ROMs, but AFAIK the pen support in these is awful -- S Note is no longer there, and there is nothing in the Play Store remotely as good, and all of the useful annotating tricks are missing.
If this is no longer the case, can someone let me know? I am not in the "scene" and there are so many ROMs posted in so many places that I have no idea where to start. Otherwise I think I will probably grab the rooted 4.3 ROM that dropped a couple days ago and try that on for size.
Thanks gang.
I'm running the gt-7105 cm10.2 .0 and I have been using the papyrus app in the play store. I'm pretty happy with it

No ROMs based of anything other then tw have the functionally that your looking for in terms of the spen. With that said, you can get some decent apps that make it less painful.
When I run cyan or any other AOSP/AOKP ROMs I install spen launcher along with notebuddy and cm spen add on. That combination will allow a pop up menu when you remove the spen that allows you to have access to your spen apps. As stated papyrus is a good one, gnote found here on xda is another, write and sketchbook, you can backup or extract sketchbook from stock ROMs and it installs fine.
I had my tablet for about two weeks now and am wondering if i should root it :/ . I cant find any other reason to root other than having four windows open at once and getting any apps to work with multi window. I am a little concern about warranty, so is it really worth it?

I've only had my tab for a couple days and I'd say YES. I don't use my tab in landscape that much so First I disabled the captive buttons (still able to be used with the S-Pen) I also added virtual buttons in portrait. Plus if you use setCPU and a smart cover you can dramatically increase the battery life by down clocking the tab when the screen is covered (display off) and that's just me getting started.
Gesture control alone makes rooting worth it. There is no more efficient way to operate a computer device. IMHO.
Also playing every game with a controller (map touch input to buttons) is a great thing if you're a gamer. Just Google for root stuff. It's basically a whole new world.
considering the same thing
Pen Window / Multi Window additions and being able to uninstall Apps I know I will never use are the draws for me. There's a video out about using Odin and autorootp600mj4.tar that seems simple enough. Just wish there there was another way to get those features.
Kingo has a post on how there process won't trip the Knox but I don't see this Tab on their list.
One concern I have that I'm totally confused about is Android / firmware updates going forward. Maybe I've been reading too much. If you Root your tab will you still get Samsung Firmware/Hardware and Android/App updates? I've only had the Tab for about a week and this is really making me consider returning it for a LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition or Google Nexus 10. Even the Microsoft Surface Pro (original is currently selling for $599) and iPad are less restrictive.
Actually yes, I am more worried about the future updates. What if I root and trigger knox and say kitkat gets released...will I be able to update??

If you trip the knox counter, You will not get OTAs, but you will have two options:
1) install a custom Rom which is based on KitKat
2) flash a KitKat Firmware via Odin and root your device again

So the KitKat firmware would be like the threads that mention:
P600UEUBMK1_P600XARBMK1_XAR
Stock-Root-De-Odex-P600UEUBMK1-2
With the difference being Odex being a single "compiled/assembled" file and DeOdex more of a to be "compiled/assembled"? I understand the (in general) Odex and DeOdex, cache, preload, sectioned apps, etc. I'm talking about the difference I see in the files/zips I download. Any chance a stock Odex ROM would have a Knox check to stop the install?
Then to root the stock I would use something like:
Odin 309
autorootp600mj4.tar.md5
stockrecoverymj4.tar.md5
Would I need a new version of the Auto and stock files with the new firmwares? Or are these files something seperate?
Sorry, bit of a noob on this stuff. Maybe someday it will be more device independent. I mean when I get a new PC (really when I build one,but..) I'm use to:
reflect/ghost current
format
setup
drivers
SW
reflect/ghost clean install
Then I can got back to stock or clean when every I want. But I don't void any warranties in the process
Final question, in this post anyway. If I root and then use something like Titanium Backup will I then have something like I'm use to on the PC? A reflect/ghost like image?
Root Noob questions
Hi - android noob here.
I've been an ipad/iPhone user for years and just bought the 10.1 14 mainly for using the s pen for drawing apps like Sketchbook Pro and Ink. Using the s pen to draw on this tablet is incredible. Magical! I would recommend it to any digital artist.
However: pen aside, the tablet seems very laggy, even using the Nova launcher and disabling whatever apps I can. Whenever I disable built in apps, it seems to reinstall them.
So im thinking of rooting so I can freeze all the bloatware apps and tweak other settings. But I have some questions:
What's the difference between rooting, installing a custom ROM, and flashing a stock ROM? Which should I do?
When KitKat is finally released, will it be easy to install if I’m rooted?
If I trip the Knox counter, what's the big deal? As far as I can tell it just means that I will miss the OTA updates.
So I just want this thing to run as fast as it ought to. Rooting seems like a good idea. Apologies for my noobiness!

Questions go under questions. Theres yet to be a specific ROM thread up where that would apply.
they have cm booting on the tmobile one, the majority of that code would work fine for the sprint one. chances are they will be unified builds. if this was teh s5 or anything id work towards fleshing out the device tree and bringing it up, but i am truly happy with my note 4 stock with xposed. i dont use all the fancy samsung features but i do use enough of them to not even really want to bother flashing aosp and losing out on it. granted this is my first note device but i cant see or imagine why anyone would want to use something other than stock, battery is amazing, features are top notch and its very fast and fluid.
I came from a nexus 5 but i sold that and for a week i used a kyocera echo until my note 4 preorder was ready to pick up, it truly is amazing in how much progress has been made in such a short time.
I agree with Shabbypenguin.
I'd rather have a stock ROM with all the cool Samsung functionality of floating windows, one handed moded, functional heart rate sensor, S-Pen apps, and camera app all work great.
Instead we need a rom with stock as base, and AOSP apps like I describe in my thread:
My "Dream ROM" for the Note 4 would be:
*Rooted
*Knox removed
*CyanogenMod style theming
*Samsung and Sprint bloatware removed (accept for Facebook sync)
*TouchWiz apps (calendar, messaging, phone, clock, calculator, lockscreen, notification quick settings) replaced with CyanogenMod versions

i swore i replied to you in there but i guess i didnt :/. the cm theme manager isnt possible on stock, its embedded in so many core files to be able to alter everything on the fly its not possible without recompiling with the code added in, and we cant recompile touchwiz.

My main gripe is the typing lag,
in some apps. I notice the typing lag mainly on TouchWiz roms and in Google hangouts and a few other apps. I've tried different keyboards and they all lag on TouchWiz. If I use Aosp, no lag at all anywhere.
Yes the features of the Note 4 are great but I don't use and can live without most of them. I really wanted this device for its spen. I'd take the overall smoothness of cm11 and it's lean build over the features in touch wiz. Hopefully we get a cm build going.
Cm12? Mmmmm
I was just reading about CM12.
I'm strongly thinking of moving over.
I can mimic floating windows with xhalo xposed. It has resizable windows that work similar to TouchWiz floating windows.
I'm not sure how I'd mimic one handed mode
Or the stock camera app which has dual facing camera modes.
Any ideas?

Have we reached a point where all of the stuff you mentioned is no longer going to be able to be incorporated into AOSP? I came to the note 4 from the note 2, and I agree touchwiz is pretty nicely refined, but I would like to see AOSP. From some post's I've read hear and there, it appears that touchwiz just gets more complex. What about the Nexus 6 OS?

I own Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and now in 2016 its showing its age, especially when on touchwiz based custom roms. Its not their fault since with time simple apps become more CPU and resources demanding and older devices struggle to keep up.One solution is to install mods/custom roms, especially AOSP/CM based roms.
I am currently sporting Resurrection Remix -Marshmallow v5.6.8 with Agni PureCM Kernel v4.5.3 and yeh i am so much happy with my setup.
But i do miss touchwiz features esp. my S pen features and its capabilities.
So this thread is to help out all those who are running aosp/cm based roms and are looking to get some s pen functionality on their roms.
My goal here is to provide best and closest possible alternatives to touchwiz stocks apps/features. Please note that there are many other alternatives than those mentioned here.they do provide somewhat similar funtionality or maybe even more in some cases, but arent similar to stock behaviour.
so 1st thing first i am highly thankful to guys at this thread that help me get started with spen features on cm/aosp based rom. Please do check out there thread, you will find it useful. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611415
1) for s command replacement there is this paid app called spen command.it works very well, though needs some tinkering to get the best out of it. link to thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/app-app-samsung-devices-provided-stylus-t3000448
link to official website: http://www.emandt.net/Android/SPenCommand/Website/
2)for screenshot we have a couple of options:-
a) using spen command app listed above, you can long tap spen on screen to screenshot it and then annotate, crop etc it.
b) use screenshot ultimate app on play store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.screenshotultimate&hl=en
Once installed open the app and let it decide best method to take screenshot. You also need to select trigger to screenshot, saving location and other settings as you see fit.once properly configured ,this app works like a charm.see this thread screenshot ultimate section to properly configure this app (text around the screenshot in post) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611415
After setting up the app, head to spen command app>side panel>settings>quick menu>scroll down to application shortcut tab>press on any blank shortcut no:>select app activities from menu>wait for list to populate>select screenshot ultimate>select viewEmptySearchButton.
3) for snote replacement ,i found squid app to be best . https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.projectpapyrus&hl=en
4) for photo annotation (in stock touchwiz gallery, opening image and then option menu gives you this feature to annotate on picture),there is no perfect solution as touchwiz but Skitch by evernote (officially discontinued now) is a close match. you need to share the image to annotate via share button in gallery apps. http://www1.zippyshare.com/v/32aPQrWB/file.html.
5) for s pen attach/detach sounds, use spen command with sound in ogg format.
6) touchwiz stock camera replacement. there are many good option
a) Camera fv-5 = https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flavionet.android.camera.pro&hl=en. NO VIDEO RECORDING CAPABILITIES
b) Lenovo Supercamera,my favorite one. There are many version . link to official thread and the version i use are here.
official link= http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665714
version i use= http://d-h.st/ZYB
c) Snap camera v8.1.0= this one had better HDR output than lenovo supercamera, but i face storage and saving problem in external sd card. Also i dont like video recording in this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055140
7) touchwiz music = i prefer playerpro. but there are so many i wonder if any audiophile actually use stock app
8) radio app= spirit fm 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/spirit-fm/app-spirit2-free-source-real-fm-radio-t2951455
9) action memo= i cant find the link so i will attach the one i am using.
10) another spen command app(PAID APP) alternative is Note Buddy(FREE). it requires CM spen addon(FREE) to be installed first.
link to note buddy= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.spen_helper
link to cm spen addon= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.cmspen2
you can also use this app called spen launcher to get air command like menu= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.spenlauncher
these are the latest to date replacements for spen and touchwiz features for aosp/cm based roms. These are in no way perfect solutions and thus i urge you to help spread the word and help me in improving this article. if you know any better solutions/replacements please post in here.
i am still missing certain s pen and touchwiz features like smart select, smart stay and some others, but well you have to compromise on something to get something better.

Spen command does tht
I dunno why this app is misses here,
Can be added
Note buddy - free (great app to launch apps on removal spen and other apps)
REQUIRES
Cm - spen add-on(enables all apps to access spen features..
For example post memo has a built in option to launch on spen removal, cannot open without spen add on.
Cm Spen add-on does this.......
Great app....

Yes I am aware of that, but spen command doesn't require these addon to install first. Also it's provides a more stock note 2/note 3 like command functionality,
Building spen gestures and screenshot annotate is another feature.
Other features include spen pointer, spen detection, clipboard manager etc.
Overall I found spen command to be much better than note buddy

well i have provided a direct link to official website for spen command app.so its not fishy or anything. there is also an active xda thread for spen command app(Link in OP).And just because it not on play store doesnt mean its fake.
I have tried GMD Spen app.although it provides a good funtionality ,it cant compete with feature set of spen command app and given both of these are paid app,i personally prefer spen command.
for pointer ,yes cm has mouse cursor for stylus, but a small dot for spen provided in spen command app is more pleasing
yeah i started reading a bit in the xda thread and i see the reason why it isnt listed on the play store. Too bad there is no trial Version, i would like to test it more extensively than for 48 hours to see how it integrates into everyday usage and how it compares to GMD Spen Control, but the developer made it pretty clear that he has no plans for a feature reduced trial version.
Also cant say that i like the automatic change feature for SELinux, for most of us its already set to permissive but thats a choice we make before flashing a rom or if we change it ourselves later on, changing it within the app feels kind of wrong (the way it looks without this feature the app would still be on the play store)
With fishy i didnt mean fake, its just strange to publish an app solely on their own website and only accepting paypal payments, maybe fishy wasnt the right word

i understand you. 48 hours in enough to get to know the worth of app.besides you can always get refund if you dont like.
just try it.i know you will like how closely it simulate air command in touchwiz rom.
many developers dont publish their app on play store either due to one reason or other. As long as there is an active xda thread and a complementary website, its good enough to trust that app is okay.
will this make my s pen work on CM?
