Where did you get that information that there is no microphone?. It has the capability to make phone calls so there has to be a mic

I have just downloaded a voice recording app from Play Store and have recorded my voice.
So I can confirm it has a microphone and able to record.

It is as good as it's bad, all depends on what you looking for and what your needs are.
if you compare it to a higher res tablet of same form factor, it' not as good. but for most (practical) purposes it's good enough.
also resolution goes hand in hand with display size., what might be good for 7" might not be as good on 8" and far worse on 10.1 due to resultant reduction in pixel density.

I know this thread is really old. But since I just stumbled over it today, someone else probably would too. The North American models, SGH-I467M (Canada) and SGH-I467 (USA), don't have the MIC at the bottom. These models don't have an earpiece speaker or proximity sensor either. The NA carriers don't want it to be used as a phone. There are at least 5 different models of Note 8.0 tablets out there. Thus, whatever you hear about Note 8.0 may or may not be true unless you know the model number.

besides figuring out that it does a 55 in linpack in 1.5 sec on the first run, here's what I did when I first got my hands on our demo...two pics of each side of the motherboard. Sorry for the quality, but it's using my OG epic
http://db.tt/2aofOxR
http://db.tt/epSIeRX
What I've found that's interesting so far through research...that little Broadcom chip? It's what's responsible for Wifi, Bluetooth, and FM. Two little goodies there...it's capable of 5ghz wifi. And....it's and FM transceiver, capable of both receiving AND transmitting FM. Do I smell development of audio through FM transmitter for those of us without Bluetooth in our cars? One can only hope
AnandTech's review gets pretty deep into the guts too.
Thanks squshy! I already see 3 things I wanted on my Epic but didn't have

Any word on the DAC? I tried looking on your pics to find the YMU823 (Yamaha DAC) but can't track it down... hoping it's not there and a Wolfson DAC is there instead.
can you confirm that the GPS unit is the same as the international verison?
The SiRF chip seems really good

Hard to say, since squshy 7 didn't provide a pic of the arm of the PCB, and according to the international SGII review at Anandtech, the SiRF GPS component is located on that arm.
Hope so though, and according to initial reviews the GPS is relatively decent on the E4GT. Not sure how it compares to the complaints on the SGII boards versus the E4G boards.
Sorry, I'm going to see if I can rip another one apart tomorrow and bring my girlfriends point-and-shoot. No promises though. If not, they're sending two of us (myself included) to a samsung event next week, and the word on the street is we'll be given a freebie. Crossing my fingers
If so, ill definitely post up some better pics.
As far as the mics are concerned...there were no labels or writing of any kind, is there a particular way to tell?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and it's fuzzy so I can't quite make it out for sure, but I think this component here says YMU023, just like the international SGSII:

is that a Qualcomm QSC6085?!?!?!? ...if that is..that is pretty sad..that board should not exist anymore on any smartphone! unless there is some other component on there..that means no future support for Rev B or 1x Advanced :/
Sprint will not be updating to Rev B or 1xAdv so no loss.

Yeah the microphone is pretty crappy, you have to hold it right by your mouth and stuck to your cheek otherwise it wont pick up anything but some muffled sound.
I took the phone apart, and removed the rubber grommet that goes on the microphone as well as expanded the microphone hole.
Microphone pick up has improved, but not great either, at least now I could hold the phone at a different angle or talk with a lower voice and people will be able to hear me.
Ill post some pictures later.
Hello,
I am searching for a new pair of reasonable quality earphones for my nexus.
The main goal is to use them to listen to music and the occasional videos.
It word also be nice if they had a mic to be able to use the earphones in phone calls too.
So, does an earphone with mic for the iphone like the DREX300IPB from Sony work with the nexus?
Thanks.
Cheers.

I think so. I will have to go to a store and check.
There are also models for iPhone with controls to stop/play, forward/reverse, mic and such.
Do does work with android?

The answer is yes.
However, volume buttons don't work, but the calling/play control button works.

There are 2 standards that exist, iPhone headset, and standard mobile phone headset with in line mic which 99% of phones support. Nexus supports the normal standard, not the iPhone standard. Just buy the standard one.
Example, Bose MIE2 or Bose MIE2i. There is always both options. Just buy the right one.

Thank you for the explanation.
However, I seem to find far more models with mic and controls that say that are made for idevices. The choice seems to be greater and so I was wondering of they would work at all on the nexus.

Do the beats by Dre for HTC sensation work on the nexus? The Mic and the play controls?

Go, record a video with your Sprint Galaxy S3, put a pair of headphones and tell me what you hear... any stereo Sound? i use my camcorder a lot to record at home with my family, while stereo is not THAT important it is a nice and immersing feature to know when your brother falls drunk to the floor and know if it was on the left or right of the camera when he is actually not on the camera... I went to Verizon and confirm theirs do have Stereo Recording, Sprint Galaxy S3 got a second speaker on the top of the phone like other carriers versions so it is there just for decoration? thanks in advance seriously... thank you

I have the same bug!
I wouldn't expect stereo recording. I would have only expected the sound to be recorded by the single microphone. Perhaps you could enlighten me as to how stereo recording would occur with just the one mic?
Also, what do you mean by the gs3 having a second speaker? There is the ear piece on the front, and one speaker on the back. Where's the second one?

There are two microphones on the phone. One near the micro USB connector and the other on the top edge of the phone near the headphone jack. Every app I have seen only uses one mic at a time. The stock camera app seems to use the one near the headphone jack. The stock Voice Recorder app uses the one near the micro USB. The Tape Machine app gives you the choice of which one to use but will not record in stereo.
The one on the top is a noise cancelling Mic. The one on the bottom is the main recording Mic.

Alright, I didn't look very hard earlier. I see it now.
Still don't see that second speaker the op was going on about though. Perhaps he meant to type mic instead of speaker.

I have a Beats by Dre Headphone and a Nexus 5, Is there a way of making it so the ContolTalk works on my phone ?
as of right now I know it was only fully functional on iOS but not on Android (only mic and call button works on it)
I will love you forever (and kiss your forehead) if you find me a solution, specially if I don't have to root it ( which I'll probably have too )
There's no solution because it's a hardware thing. The cable is not compatible fully with an Android device and no rooting will do anything about it any more than rooting would make the N5 work with an iPhone-designed radio.

1st receipe: Go to the E-Bay. Try to find a "Samsung headset control cable". It's very rare thing so you could fail with it. Try aliexpress, dx or similar sites.
2nd receipe: Go to the E-Bay and get the pair of the cheapest Samsung headsets there. Find someone familiar with the soldering iron and tell him to use the headset as the donor to the original cable. Changes will occur for resistors and wiring – he'd changeover mic and ground contacts as describede below.

Instead of doing this workaround, just buy this adapter:

It convert from CTIA to OMTP.

Sure thing they do. Plus they are a lot cheaper than Beats and sound better even straight out of the box. Not to mention how much better they sound once you burn them in.
