I am super sorry if this has been covered, but I have indeed searched, several sites, and I haven't found anything on my specific problem. I had my Galaxy S3 rooted for a time then decided to unroot it. The unroot worked and the phone status now says "normal," but I still cannot receive any OTA updates and my flash counter does not say "0." I suppose my first question is would resetting the flash counter solve the problem with getting the updates? And if so, How can I go about doing that with an already unrooted phone? I searched through the thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
- but was not allowed to post in it since I'm a noob. Thanks for any help.
Use triangle away to reset the flash counter, however you will need to reroot to run triangle away and then unroot again once your finished.
Could always PM the OP of the thread. Sure he wouldnt mind  That being said, flash the jb version of that rom. Youll be up to date w/ no root and a counter at 0.
Thanks. I'll reroot then follow that thread's guide and use the rom files linked. I know enough about rooting to root, but if I ever run into an issue, I have no idea what I'm doing. We all appreciate your guys' help!
Stupid question, but I want to be sure. I can easily root, then use the triangle away app. But, when I go to unroot, am I just using the JB.zip file from the above mentioned thread and that itself will unroot? Or do I unroot completely first then flash that zip?
Sorry, maybe is offtopic but I need this information badly...
I rooted my GS3 and installed some Incredible HD rom...now, I wanted to get back to stock rom! So, I restored to my Stock rom which I previously backed up in clockwork recovery...Now I have a stock rom but UNABLE to update my phone via KIES or OTA????? It sais > your device curred fw isnt supported ....
What should I do? Should I reset my flash counter or unroot it first before update or what???
THANKSSSS
Rooted with CWM, then flashed CM 10. Did not back up ever. I want stock GS3. I'm planning on selling it soon so i want it back to what it was before, but keeping the CMW is fine. Thank you.
Check out the unroot procedures in post #2 of my guide. The I747 link is on my signature.
If you want to remain rooted with a custom recovery, simply flash the stock-rooted firmware in the Android Development section with Odin and so a factory reset
Okayy ive searched around and looked through ALL the threads and guides on rooting this phone and even followed some but im still stuck. Yes ive read and searched before asking so now im asking, is there any thorough guide or youtube vid maybe that shows how to properly apply full root to the T999N version of the galaxy s3 on metropcs? Im updated to 4.3 btw. Please no sarcasm/smart remarks
Did you try Root66 4.3 version ?
Best if you can flash a Custom Recovery via Odin and then flash SuperSU package through that Recovery.

Ive tried to flash the recovery through odin but even though the box says PASS and reboots my phone, when i go into recovery mode it takes me to stock android recovery. I need help
Make sure that Recovery is compatible with your phone. Second post the complete odin log for that process.
I have it rooted now, just have to figure out a way to update twrp without removing root

Take least TWRP and Flash via Odin.
Where can I find the MK7 kernel, that's the only way I can get wifi to work.
Please please forgive me if I'm reposting. I have an s3 that's rooted up and running great so not a novice here. Although my brother finally gave me his T-Mobile note 2- 4.3 w/knox to play with. However his request was to root and unlock it. I've been through the threads over here and just need a link to the most successful method to achieve this. I've tried a couple of rooting methods already (cf auto and Mr Robinson) but can't get root to stick or get recovery. I guess can I factory reset his phone and flash a 412 rom over it and root and unlock that way?? And I believe his 4.3 update was ota. I would appreciate any help here thanks.

I had some trouble getting root & recovery to stick on my stock 4.3 Note 2. I think the method that worked best for me was installing TWRP recovery using Odin. The official T-Mobile Note 2 TWRP thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966105
There is a download link towards the bottom of the 1st post that redirects to the TWRP homepage but here is the direct link to the TWRP page for the T-Mobile Note 2:
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/123
The Odin Method is the last on in the list, download the TAR file & flash with Odin
Once you have recovery, you can flash the latest Chainfire (1.99) to root your ROM or just flash a custom ROM
This may help you to get root/recovery but beware, I have been randomly losing my root access even on custom rooted ROMs. I just created a new thread yesterday to hopefully track & resolve the issue but I have a feeling it is related to the 4.3 bootloader which currently can't be rolled back or fixed in the T-Mobile Note 2. My thread for losing root is in the link below, please check it out and see if you are experiencing the same issue:

I wiped my internal storage and I'm still getting stuck in at the same part. Do I need to wipe my external storage as well?
Bad download or wrong file? I think you should start over with fresh downloads, downloaded from your PC, not phone. Verify md5 checksum on the stock tar. Check your Samsung driver version as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56853325
Download the CF Auto-Root specific to your device as well.
If you think your sdcard is suspect, just remove it or format it. Follow the usual advice: try another USB cable on the rear of PC (USB 2.0). The original Note 4 USB cable works for me.
BTW, if you're trying to get to lollipop, don't root until you take the OTA update.

Forgot to mention that Flashify has become a trusted source, to me and maybe others here. You can find it on Google Play and it will download TWRP, I recommend the non-zip latest one. Flashify will also automatically prompt you to install it from where it just downloaded it and checks its integrity. Since TWRP updates frequently, could be a manual step saver.

So I used a totally different computer and new cable and I'm still getting stuck at the exact same place. Everything on ODIN said it worked but my phone just bootloops.
1) Could you tell me what is your goal, please? Example: root stock, flash custom touchwiz or CM12 ROM. If touchwiz, are you referring to NIE, NK2, OB7?
2) Are you starting with a factory reset then stock tar?
There are alternate methods but knowing your goal could simplify the process or warrant starting over with NIE stock tar. For example, you could simply Odin TWRP recovery and then flash a rooted ROM zip or SuperSU zip in recovery. Another example: I and at least one other user trying to get to the OTA for 5.0.1 (OB7), had to Odin NIE stock tar and take two OTA updates to get lollipop.
http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
This is a recovery flash that uses custom recovery to root; same developer, different approach. (For rooting stock. If a different ROM is your goal, it most likely includes this zip in its flash zip in a folder labeled supersu.)
Using the alternative methods, you'd skip Odin if CF Auto Root but still have to Odin latest TWRP.

1)My goal is to just root stock
2) I'm starting with a factory reset. I don't really know what you mean by stock tar.
What I tried was. I followed the instructions to root my phone. It got stuck in a bootloop. I did a factory reset. Set up my phone. Tried to root again using ODIN. Still getting stuck in bootloop. Then I did another factory reset and I'm just stock but the strange thing is I have Super SU installed and all the bloatware I originally removed is gone but rootchecker says I don't have root. And strangely my WiFi won't work.

Root stock helps me some with your goal. The alternative method of Odin TWRP them flash the zip file in the previous post would be an option.
The time that you actually root is key to your goal and suggesting steps. If you want rooted lollipop, currently the only option is take OB7 OTA (over the air) update.
Furthermore, you're having Wi-Fi issues and can't root is an indication you need to flash stock firmware in Odin rather than just root. It's always a good idea to do this if you start having problems with booting after a flash or something is not working.
There's already a thread on getting to lollipop with OTA and rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59235259
You could follow that but I'd suggest adding an extra OTA and starting over at NIE stock tar since NK2 is giving you problems. The three alpha-numeric designations for firmware I gave indicate the original stock tar starting at NIE and then NK2 (both are KitKat ROMs). The initial lollipop ROM is OB7. The stock tars available are NIE and NK2 found below.

1)Download the stock tar NK2, TWRP tar for Odin and supersu zip.
2)Factory reset.
3)Power down. Battery pull is an option. Go to download mode.
4)Odin stock tar; be patient waiting for COM and tar to verify before start (one minute or 2).
5)Boot and setup.
6)Power down.
7)Odin TWRP recovery tar
8)In recovery, flash the supersu zip.
9)On first boot, follow any prompts to update su binary that SuperSu prompts you for but do not select TRWP as the option but "Normal" when asked.
10)You should be rooted.
Of course you could also follow the instructions in the stock tar thread I pointed you too. The above is the alternative method.

Refer to post 8 for the links to alternate rooting method files if you don't already have them.
Best wishes for success. No luck to it.
