[Q] Black Screen / package manager not running after changing build.prop - Ouya Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
after my Ouya had been soft-bricked because i didnt accept the new TOS i am trying to get it alive again. After tinkering with "/system/build.prob" and installing 2 new launchers the Fouya comes up with black screen and takes very long until i can access it with "adb". Luckily this still does work.
I did just change the update url in /system/build.prob, nothing more.
Anyone has tips on what to check and how to get the package manager working again?
The exact "adb" error is "Error: Could not access the Package Manager. Is the system running?"
thx,
Tycho

What about recovery? Are you able to enter and Flash stock/custom rom?
But first you might want to Check your build.prop for errors:
Did you mache enter a spaces in last line/ at the end of one line?
Did you push build.prop via adb and forgot to give it the right permissions?

i can boot cwmrecovery via fastboot but it wont boot from the recovery partition. Also i did use "dd" to write the recovery image. I also get sometimes the pink cwm screen and its only using the left half of my monitor.

thx, i will check this. As i cant use my old Ubuntu 11.10 i am using windows atm. and edit with notepad++.
There must be no spaces at the end of line then i guess? I think i restore the backup props file and then go from there.

i forgot to memorize the access rights and then set it to 777.

Should be 644 and dont forget to mount r/w System

So you are able to restore stock or custom rom and even push stock build.prop via adb? What exactly do you need us to tell you then?
If cwm is corrupted try ob another monitor/TV. If recovery doesn't show up hit the windows button on your keyboard a couple of times, this should bring up cwm screen again.

I can access my Ouyas via adb and i can write the recovery flash, which i did several times, but i cant boot to whatever reasons from the recovery partition. Maybe its an issue with the USB keyboard.

I needed to know to get the boot process unstuck. Thanx to you its working again. It hab been the wrong access permissions of the build.prop file which did prevent the box from booting into a launcher. After setting "chmod 644" again, like you suggested, everything works again and now my Ouya is alive and kickin with a Nova Launcher and the exposed. I am working on getting cifs/nfs working atm.
Again, thx for the help.

How to change bootanimation runnig stock.

Hi, I am currently using stock JB with a couple of mods/extras i managed to link in via the kitchen. But frustratingly so I cannot change the boot image and are hoping with appreciation someone in here can direct me. So far I have tried everything I am capable of. That is from within the kitchen enabling the function which is suppose to allow you to change your boot animation. Although it gives you the tick and creates a different directory for your boot animation this still doesn't work. I have tried replacing hTC_boot_one.zip file but does not work. Whenever i do replace or alter that file the boot starts as normal with white htc and then goes to black with android with a back light rolling from side to side, like kit in night rider. I also have tried flashing Mattmans-Boot-Animation which uses aroma installer. Still didnt work and as far as I know it just added the file in system/customize/resource/. There appears to be a command file preventing any changes internally in stock. Really appreciate and hope someone can help. Thanks in advance......happy new years.....:good:

Have you mounted system as rw? In root explorer you just press the button, not sure on other apps, and have you set the right permissions? rw-r--r-- to match everything else in system/customize/resource.

If system is mounted as ro (read only) you can't change anything in the folder, this is the default setting I think and it needs to be mounted as rw to allow changes.
You could try to rename something in the system directory and if it doesn't actually change then you need to change it, or check if the filesize of the boot animation you replace changes.
Like I said, rootexplorer app changes it with a tap of the button, not sure what else to use

Thanks again. No problem renaming any file within system so I guess it is mounted as rw. As to file size, i have tried different file sizes and identical file sizes to the hTC_boot_one.zip file. I have even tried using the same Zip file and just replacing with different images. Making sure to end up with the same values. Nothing seems to work.
Strange, I had rooted stock Rom and it worked fine, maybe you have the wrong format of files or haven't zipped as store only, no compression. I assume it is a sense one x Rom?
Maybe try this one I made for the Rom I use

[Q] KF2: Unable to boot into CM10 - Any help appreciated

Hi Guys,
Firstly, thanks so much for the info on this community. I've followed loads of the threads and almost all of what I need to know is here.
I have a KF2 @ v10.3.1. I've rooted it and applied the 2nd bootloader using a homemade lead (thanks to the thread on that!). I started in Windows but switched to Kubuntu after getting driver issues etc.. To compound the problem, the KF2 is blocked by Amazon, which didn't help as I couldn't load apps whist it was stock. (It's not stolen or otherwise illegally obtained. Amazon sent it in error, and despite me contacting them to ask how to return it, they've never replied)
Anyhow, After following THIS thread, which appeared to go OK, after rebooting I'm unable to boot into Recovery. The blue screen just stays there. I can still boot normally, but I would like to load CM10 which is loaded as per the thread, along with gapps, both in zip format. I have read many threads about being stuck on the blue screen, but these are always locked and need to be restored, but I have no problem booting normally and the KF2 is not locked. I've searched this site and googled plenty.
I don't expect an exact answer, but if someone could just point me at what to look at, I'm sure I can find the rest of the info I need on here. :good:
Oh, also. Another quick question. I see that the CM10 images are constantly being updated, if (when I get mine working) I want to use one of these, is it simply a case of copying the zip file over? Or is there more to do than that.
Many thanks in advance.
You can boot normally? Into stock, I assume.
Run the apk tool from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106463
Should get you fixed right up
The zip file will have to be flashed from recovery. So, its a matter of copying the zip file (and gapps) over. Boot into recovery. Wipe data, cache, dalvik and system. Then flash rom first, the gapps.
Also, be VERY CAREFUL and make sure you have a GOOD DOWNLOAD by checking the md5 on the file. If you wipe the system (which deletes the stack file) you will not be able to boot into recovery or anything.
I still recommend that you purchase a fastboot cable.
Edit: also, when booting into recovery you might have to hit the power button a couple of times.

Cheers mindmajick. I've tried to do this but still having a few problems.
If I use the wired version, the runme.bat does not have permissions to the data/app folder. I can't seem to run it in Kubuntu as it says I can't run a binary file if I make it executable, but says I don't have permission if I remove execute. (I'm looking into this - but I'm not very good with Linux, so lots of Googling!!...lol....) Also I see that there are some issues with this version with the wireless version being favored. Unfortunately as I'm unable to log onto my Amazon account, I can't use this method.
I will continue to try, I'm almost there now, thanks for you help so far.

I'm unable to use the cordless version com.powerpoint45.FMKilo-2.apk due to the fact that as the KF2 is blocked by Amazon, I'm unable to log in and download or install .apk files.
Is there is an alternative way to install .apk files without needing to log in?
Hopefully that makes a little more sense. Cheers
Yes. Download the fmkilo apk from his thread, (use the browser if you have to) then once downloaded pull down the notification bar and tap on the apk link. Also, make sure that the option to install from unknown sources is set in the settings before doing the download
You could alternatively push the file via adb to the system Directory.
Is USB debugging enabled? Are you rooted?

Yup, that did it. I had overlooked the fact that I was still able to use the browser on the KF2 and didn't really know you could install .apk's using that method anyway. So now I have carried on and installed Jellybean 4.2.2 on there and it works a treat.
Thank you ever so much Mindmajick for taking an interest in my problem, I really do appreciate yours and the rest of the developers time on here. :good:

Not a problem: Thanks
I think this is a method of pushing the flash and image files to the tablet and then installing using ADB by the way it is described.
I think I have that method copied down some place else.
I have never used this method but, sounds like it would work.
I also presume you need root to do the install via ADB.

[TUTORIAL] ROOTING!!! Huawei Ascend P1 U9200 (B315 EmotionUI 1.5 JB v4.1.1)

Rooting Ascend P1 U9200 B315 EUI1.5 JB v4.1.1
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyone wanting to root there Ascend P1 U9200 phone after the new firmware update, here are the files, and info you need, to do so...
First off, plug UR phone in switch it on and let Windows search for the driver, Then click "Let me choose..." or "browse for it..." or similar. Then select "Let me choose which driver to install", then click "list of drivers" or similar, Then click the one near the top that has adb or similar in the title, it don't matter if you choose the wrong one, it just means it wont connect and you'll have to redo this part again and pick a different driver.
Remember!! You MUST run these commands as Administrator.
1. Download the files below, extract them to a folder, preferably one without any spaces in the path, i.e.. C:\U9200Root\ should do perfect.
3. Right Click the "Click-To-Root-U9200.bat" file and under compatibility options click run as administrator or the like.
4. Run (Double Click) the Click-To-Root-U9200.bat (As Administrator!) (or right-click then, "run as administrator...")
4. Reboot your fone and click yes on your fone to install SuperUser.
that's it, your rooted
for those wanting to do the commands there self...
1. Download & extract the files to C:\U9200Root\
2. In the CLI type: "C:\U9200Root\adb reboot bootloader"
3. Then "boot TWRP.img"
4. Then Restart your fone and choose yes to install SuperUser
PS if you've not got much space left in your system partition you may have to delete something from /system/app/ to make space for the SuperUser files.
REMEMBER the space reported on your fone by android is the space on your data partition/memory & sd card and not the system partition!
You can check how much system data etc space you have left from terminal if u have it installed, or on the TWRP recovery which you will have just installed. To do this, Reboot the fone holding the Vol. Up Button, click on advanced then terminal then type "df -h" without quotes if system partition is less than say 10-20mb free then delete maybe, uneeded languages?, chrome.apk?, GSM_Maps.apk? or the like, then reinstall them to the /data/app part later. Since many of these apks get updated and the old ones left undeleted in /system/app/ anyways, I always move the system apks updates from /data/app to /system/app/, makes things a lot tidier and saves a lot of space both in /data/app and /system by not having two of every apk file youve ever updated just remember to copy the libs to /system/lib(s)
Anyways hope I helped someone with this...
cheers John -G-

Hi
After adb reboot bootloader you can also install CWM with fastboot :

With CWM you can backup your phone (always a good idea )
After rebooted in CWM install SU with any zip file (ex : SU___Busybox_1.20.2_Flashable.zip )

How to remove TWRP...? I want to update U9200-EM-UMTS-V100R00G411D00B336....thanx in advance.
Stuck
My U9200 is just stuck on the HUAWEI logo when you boot it...
And the cmd application just keeps saying < waiting for device >
Any help is appreciated...
with B336 this method doesn't work.
EDIT:
The problem is not in TWRP or CWM; the problem is that there is not enough space in folder /system/app.
From TWRP I went to "Advanced" and then "file manager"; here from the /system/app I deleted all the languages other than Italian-pack (my language), chrome.apk and gsm-map.apk. Then I flashed SU_flashable and after boot-up SU was finally installed.
It seems that the difficulty of obtaining root permissions in all stock roms from b105 onwards is precisely linked to the lack of space in the / system / app.
I hope to be helpful to those who find themselves with the same problem.

Stucked at TMobile 4G LTE Screen (settings.db mess)

Hello,
I was trying to edit my note 3 settings.db file to add the MobileData toggle at the notification panel.
After I edited the file, I rebooted the phone and Now I am stucked at the Tmobile 4G lte screen.
I have saved the original settings.db file so I can replace the modified one but the problem is that now that the phone doesn't turn on I can't replace it.
Is there anyway to fix this without installing everything from zero again???
Thank You
P.s
I tried to boot in safe mode but the phone doesn't boot even like this.
I tried to wipe cache, but nothing changed
As for the recovery mode, I can boot there
Boot to recovery and use adb console from your pc to swap the files. Learn some Linux command line commands if you don't know how. Primarily you will use cp target.file destination . file. Make a backup if you want via mv.

Another question, as I am not managing to over pass this error close message from adb.
If I install 4.4.2 again from download mode will I lose my settings, applications and everything else that I have installed before???
Odin doesn't wipe anything, but the re install would overwrite much of your personalizations. Boot into recovery, do a nandroid backup, then boot into download and Odin and restore. When you're up again, download nandroid manager from play store and select what you want to restore from your nandroid backup you made. Be sure to save it in a persistent partition, external SD if possible.

This is thanks to the Xiaomi mi4i devs and @persona78 for porting it to 6045 (and @satana.nik.1996 for starting to port TWRP from other phones, in 4PDA)
Supported Devices
Any 6045 Variant
Installation Guide
There are multiple methods, i will post the 3 i know here
If you have stock recovery and you are on Lollipop
Install fastboot tools (Android) from google's Sdk on your PC
Reboot in Fastboot mode, pressing volume - and USB cable into the pc or enter into fastboot using in adb (with usb debug enabled) adb reboot-bootloader
Enter the command : fastboot -i 0x1bbb flash recovery twrp-3.1.0-0-m1_Idol3.img (I suggest to rename the file, for to example twrp.img, so you just write fastboot-i 0x1bbb flash recovery twrp.img)
write : fastboot reboot, and when the phone is starting, only press volume+ and you will enter to TWRP
If you have TWRP installed (Any android version)
Boot into TWRP using Vol+ and Power
Go to Install
Press Install Image and search twrp-3.1.0-0-m1_Idol3.img
Then Press Recovery, swipe and it is installed
If you have MM stock, without TWRP and ROOT
Install/Search Rashr from Play Store
Grant SD and Root Permissions
Press Recovery, then search twrp-3.1.0-0-m1_Idol3.img
Press install and you are done
Bug/s TWRP 3.1.0-0
You can't reboot into Recovery from Recovery (you can just press vol+ to avoid this)
It shows internal Storage 2 times, but does not affect in anything (just make sure when you wipe, just wipe 1 and not both at the same time)
You tell me
Bug/s TWRP 3.0.2-0-r5
You can't reboot into Recovery from Recovery (you can just press vol+ to avoid this)
Sort of Laggy (like TWRP 3.0.1-0)
You tell me

My bad, I had the 2.8.7.0 version and it can install images. Installed on 6045K without problems, I didn't tried to flash system or wipe data, I don't know will it be problems with that. Anyway, thanks a lot for EVERY single man for making such a great things for this phone including you @panchovix ☺.

Where exactly do you see this? I see "6045" in the Device Manager, and "recovery" when doing "adb devices".

Same here... Nothing happens on the device, and the backup file that gets created on the PC has this one line:
Code:
/sbin/sh: /system/bin/bu: not found
When I checked /system/bin in unpacked ramdisk, I found it to be completely empty, but I did find /sbin/bu. So... Not knowing enough to figure out what exactly was wrong here, I just copied the contents of /sbin into /system/bin, repacked the img, and flashed it. Guess what? ADB backup works now. So, someone smarter than me should figure out how to "properly" fix it, because I am pretty damn sure what I did was not the right thing to do, even though it seemed to solve the problem... I didn't do much testing, other than completing the adb backup. Too late, going to bed now...

@panchovix
I already found it!
This is how to backup system for example:
Code:
adb backup -f system.img --twrp system
And in adb folder you will get system.img
How it works:
adb backup -f <filename> --twrp <options> ( --compress: compress data )
options:
system: backup system
cache: backup cache
data: backup data
boot: backup boot
etc for each partition.
Read this if you want to learn more about it:
https://github.com/omnirom/android_bootable_recovery/commit/ce8f83c48d200106ff61ad530c863b15c16949d9
And twrp-lux-3.0.2-r5 can do backup to in the same way! Just need to copy the bu file into /system/bin folder and compile it again... -_-
I think twrp-lux-3.0.2-r5 is better than TWRP 3.1 ...
The MTP works better on pc.
This is twrp-lux-3.0.2-r5_Idol3.img -> https://mega.nz/#!wsAgBSiY!DifwUCYvIoOmMXp14u0ZuBaekhCVmnEDdurU2_6UFfw
This is twrp-3.1.0-0-m1_Idol3.img fixed -> https://mega.nz/#!55hFCABY!GovSGXaQ1muuU0c-wDYN-40iapzey5Jp0AFhIp2B3qg

Looks like you already figured out the backup process... Just to note, it also creates the regular backup folder on the device, but also copies it over through ADB to the PC. Yeah, I think it should be either a symlink, or maybe some playing around with the PATH variable, not sure... I did the most simple thing, just to test it out: if a binary is expected in some folder, just put it there. But it's rather stupid, IMO...

Yeah np, seems he did it, anyways (since I'm not on my home still), did you try to restore the phone with the PC backup? If I'm not wrong it should be adb restore twrp-- ( I can be very wrong lol I don't remember)
That is the most important thing, since you can just move the file to the PC and save space on the phone always

Nope, haven't tried it yet... I will try, but not sure when, as I am really crazy busy now between work and home (I am in the final stages of building my own house, lol).
But to me, honestly, this is just an added convenience over just copying over the standard TWRP backups to the PC. Even without adb backup, we can always copy over the TWRP backup folder(s) to the PC, and delete them from the device. Then simply copy them back to do a restore, when needed... Takes some extra time, sure, but still can easily be done.
