i tried flashing a custom recovery to my tablet, and it didn't work (won't boot into recovery) and i don't really have time right now to figure out why it doesn't boot. for now i'd like to restore the stock recovery, but i don't have a copy of it. does anyone have a copy of the stock recovery, or can anyone dump it for me?
Did you root it?? Cause I been trying to find a root for and can . The only way to put a recovery is if you root with the bootloader unlock from my understanding. If try to flash recovery and it gets stuck is cause the bootloader is lock or you wasnt root . If you are root please share on how you did so . Thanks.

the bootloader is unlocked already. we just need a working custom recovery or a copy of the stock firmware to be able to root it.
i did flash the stock recovery for the T215 and it boots, but i haven't tried actually using it for anything.
Can you post the link to where you found how to lock bootloader. I would love to do that.lol. I would appreciate it . Thanks

r u rooted and have a custom recovery
Heres the commands to pull the recovery and save it to the sdcard. It needs to be in root.
Code:
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p14 of=/sdcard/recovery.img
Look in this thread for root and i have a insecure boot.img with init.d support post there also

Have you rooted and installed CWM Recovery?
cannot root the phone, i've tried and phone just hangs
Have you downloaded the gnex toolkit in the development thread and tried that?

Have you installed a custom recovery?
which custom recovery? cwm recovery will not work without root access correct?
you can not have cwm recovery without root. do u have a GSM or LTE GN?
LTE version
I cant seem to find a way to root 4.0.3

Incorrect.
Root access gives you write access to the OS, which is separate from recovery. The standard root method for a Nexus device is to remove security from the bootloader, which then allows you to install non-signed images. You then install a custom recovery image. The custom recovery allows you to flash non-signed OS changes, which means you can flash the su binary and busybox (giving you root)...
You need to use fastboot to flash cwm, then you can install su and busybox...
ok gotcha, i was under the stupid assumption that i needed to gain root access to install a custom recovery. im going to give it a shot and see what happens
If you want to install recovery from the OS, then you would need an insecure/rooted OS. If you want to install recovery from the bootloader, then you would need an insecure/unlocked bootloader...

Same here
Same thing happened to me. I installed the Gnex toolkit and unlocked the bootloader. Then I tried to root the phone: It restarted and I turned on USB debugging as it said and nothing happened.
So you're saying that I can skip the rooting and "Rename Recovery Restore File" before I "Flash CWM Recovery". After that I can try rooting through Gnex Toolkit 5.2?
Hello guys,
As I successfully updated my phone to 4.3 using Toolkit, but I got one problem. My phone is rooted , so I have SuperSU on it. When I start the program it says that I need to re-root my phone again, so as to install some updates and it does not allow me to work with it.
So my problem is that when i rooted my phone i used Samsung Galaxy Toolkit 11.1.0 and I had no problems. But now, there is no option where I can find my phone`s version (4.3), which leads me to the fact that I can not change anything for this time..
I will be really glad if someone explain me some other way to root and unroot my phone.
Thanks.
Don't use the damn toolkit and you wouldn't have an issue. Its just a zip file you flash in the custom recovery you now have.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
find a nice pre-rooted 4.3 rom and flash that. I've been using Lovejoy 777's 4.3 and it works well, root sticks

yes, but when I went to the custom recovery trough the bootloader , one android appeared with red stomach and a exclamation mark... It seems that the root has disappeared and also the Custom Recovery with it..
Yeah. Flashing the entire package of 4.3 replaces recovery and root is lost with the /system replacement because root is located in /system.
Flash custom recovery again and then flash supersu.zip. done

No it will not effect your device, you would simply need to gain the root access again.
If you are getting No Command in CWM recovery mode, it means your recovery doesn't have proper permissions, so simply flash this zip and reboot into recovery - View attachment Fix-Recovery.zip

If you are flashing a custom ROM then root access will already be there.
But if you want to do it on your own, just flash UPDATE-SuperSU.zip from here (works on any ROM) - http://download.chainfire.eu/381/SuperSU

I don't really need a custom recovery (I don't know of any features custom recovery will give me I really need?) and for now I'm fine running stock roms (I always give stock a few weeks just as a baseline before I start custom roms) but I was wondering, how would one go about rooting the OP3 without installing a custom recovery?
Is it possible / easily doable? Or am I better off just to flash some custom recovery and ditch the stock one?
The reason I don't want to go away from stock just yet is I know oneplus is still updating the rom and custom recoveries, historically, have made OTA updates problematic.
Rooting will also mess up Ota too, but if u install a custom recovery, now that we have stock recovery it will be very easy to revert back for OTAs, there should be a way to root without a custom recovery but I am not sure how though, but with how oneplus makes it so easy to unlock bootloader and flash customers stuff there is really no need to stay stock
You can simply connect your OP3 to a PC and boot to TWRP without flashing it:
fastboot boot twrp.img
Then do a backup with twrp before rooting. I use the above method with systemless root
and also don't really need a custom recovery at this point. This might change once CM13 matures on the OP3...
OTAs might work this way in the future. If they don't, restore your system + boot (kernel) partition
and try the OTA again.
edit: implying your bootloader is already unlocked

As far as I know, you'd have to have TWRP to get root.
I don't think getting it rooted will mess up the OTA updates, other users sprovide flashable zips for the OTA anyway.. so you can still flash the zips manually with TWRP to keep you updated.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3000 using XDA-Developers mobile app
To get root yes, you would need TWRP to flash to certain partitions but to keep root no. Your phone will operate just fine with root and stock recovery. Check what the user a few posts above mine said about temporary flashing TWRP to achieve your short term goals

Yes, I have the stock recovery and it is rooted.
The recovery partition has nothing to do with all the other partitions except that it can read and write them.
This is the zip I flashed to get systemless root:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24591000424939898
Some users reported that some Root-apps are not supported this way.
I am using Titanium Backup, Adaway, Trimmer and Root Explorer without issues.
Keep in mind that I did not get any OTA so far since running this setup, so I am not sure if official OTAs will or will not work.
All I did was manually flash OxygenOS 3.1.3 in TWRP (not flashed but booted) and reflash the root package afterwards.

The updater will recognize root on your device and download the full 1.3 gb Rom file.
But after updating root will be gone, so you will have to reflash root after each ota.

Just to make sure, if I root using this method nothing will change, except I have root access, my bootloader is unlocked and the updates will be big, but I can update the normal way, I will just lose the root access? Is that correct or am I missing something?

One more thing:
If you have TWRP, automatically installing the big OTA will remove it and go back to the stock recovery.
I always manually move the downloaded ota from android/data/com.oneplus.ota/files/.OnePlusOta
to my download folder, boot into TWRP and flash it + SuperSU on my own.

Yes, OTAs will come and because of Root you will get the full OTA regardless, which does not cause any issues with TWRP.
I tried my previous method and the regular OTA would fail because of root which changes the kernel or the system partition.
OnePlus reacted to this and introduced the full rom OTAs at some point.
So with root on my device this is how I do OTAs now:
- get the OTA notification for the full rom
- download but don't install
- move the downloaded zip from android/data/com.oneplus.ota/files/.OnePlusOta to my download folder
- manually boot into twrp and flash full rom zip + SuperSU

Yes, you can. You can use tethered TWRP method to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader.
Since you are using TWRP in tethered mode, you do not need to install the TWRP as such you DO NOT need to unlock the bootloader and you still have your stock recovery.
This guide tells you how to root, install xposed and downgrade. Just read the root part and unroot part.
I do not use the twrp mention in that post. Download the latest twrp here.
I did use the BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328-patch-by-shakalaca-for-zenfone2-6.0.zip mentioned in that post.
The guide mentioned that your bootloader need to be unlocked, however you are using twrp in tethered mode so unlocking the bootloader is unnecessary.
I hope you know how to use the adb.

You can not sideload TWRP. TWRP has to be flashed into recovery partition. Since bootloader is locked, your sideloading TWPR could not be successful as such you still have your stock recovery.
Try to get into recovery.
You might be stuck in the dead robot with red triangle. In that case press and hold the power button, and press and release the volume up button quickly. Try several time until you got into recovery.
If your phone is not booting at all and could not detect from the adb, you might need to flash the .raw file via asus flash tool.
Once your phone is back to normal, follow the guide I mentioned in the previous post to root the phone. You can flash supersu zip in the TWRP install tab.
You can press thank button if my post is helping you.

You can not install the supersu from the stock recovery. Rooting the phone requires to modify the boot.img. From Stock recovery it is not allowed.. As such you need custom recovery like TWRP.
copy the supersu that I mentioned in the previous post to the sd card.
Follow the instructions from the root section of the the guide that I mentioned in the previous post.
That guide tells you to run TWRP in tethered mode.
The command fastboot boot <twrp.img> will move the twrp.img to your phone and let your phone boot into twrp .
Once you are in the twrp, tab the install from zip tab and select the supersu zip file you move to the sd card. If you do not know how to use twrp there are a lot of videos on youtube about twrp.

At the end of supersu installation you might see the message saying that you would get that verification error message and tell you to ignore that. I did see that message twice and after that I do not see that message anymore every time I reboot the phone.
I can not help you on the xposed though because I did not install the xposed. I just rooted my phone. If you want you could follow that guide. Load the twrp in the tethered mode and install the xposed from the twrp.

Sorry for rising this 1yo thread.
It seems the tethered TWRP couldn't be successfully flashed on both LP (latest releases) either MM (any release) unless the bootloader is locked. The boot command doesn't give errors, but the phone won't reboot and stay in fastboot/bootloader mode.
Could you confirm that's working on MM, nowadays ?
Thanks
