[Q] About rooting and Software updates. - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just got a S4 Mini (old phone HTC Desire S) I like the phone so far and the stock rom that runs on it, however I'm getting annoyed with the battery drain issue that it's been having, and I saw on a topic where there is a modded stock kernel which may fix the battery drain issue which I wanted to give a try.
My main question is if I root my phone and flash the modded stock kernel and nothing else, will I still receive updates from the "Software update"/ OTA Updates?
Thanks for your time.:good:

No you won't be able to receive ota updates or through Kies.... Only you can do is reinstall a stock firmware through Odin

Updating to official ICS 4.0.3 via Samsung Kies

I want to update my phone through Samsung Kies from GB to the official ICS update. If I do it this way, all of my data & apps should stay on the phone, which I want. My phone currently has:
ClockworkMod Recovery
Rooted
Bullet Kernel
Stock ROM
Android V 2.3.5
baseband- T989UVKL1
I know from before that updating the phone requires it to be stock, so my question is, what do I need to do in order to be able to update to ICS through Kies and can I do it w/o losing my apps & data in the process.
Thanks!

It should work fine through Kies although I'm not sure if the kernel might cause a conflict, I would doubt it though if you are still on a stock rom. I did mine rooted from GB stock and the latest radio update, also had CWM.. Maybe others have input..

I tried through Kies and it said that my phone could not be upgraded. It gives me the message "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies" ...I went back, flashed the stock kernel and tried again with no luck. :/
..I think i'm going to stick with GB for now anyway though bc I've heard nothing but bad reviews about the official ICS release. I love the way it looks & I had darkside evo2 for a little bit back a while ago and it was super fast but I went back to GB bc I need the fully functionality of my phone and GPS wasn't working
I went from DEICS to Juggernaut GB and havn't looked back. Its In the RM app.
Most say its the best ROM out there and I wouldn't doubt it.
Plus 1.8ghz! BAM!

[q] how to extract stock rom or firmware from my s3

Hi all,
i am very new to android, i used iphone from the beginning until I4 but NOW i just bought a samsung s3. it has been a nice exp. so far though, here are some questions i would like to ask:
1. How do i get stock ROM or FIRMWARE (like you call it with iphone) from my S3? Nothing is modify, it is clean from Tmobile phone.
2. It seems like batery in 4.1.1 is alot worst than 4.0.4, thats why if i update to 4.1.1 and i want to go back 4.0.4 then i can do without any problem. HOW DO I GO BACK?
3. You might think how do i know? Well, i had a S3 before this BRAND NEW S3, i updated 4.1.1 and batery had gone like crazy. So, if i update THIS phone to 4.1.1, i would love to have a way to go back. Please tell me if you have a good exp. with batery life in 4.1.1 because i like 4.1.1 BUT i dont want to charge phone everyday while i dont use alot. I have NO DATA service, NO TEXT, just WIFI, MUSIC, YOUTUBE sometimes ....
NOTE: my S3 is clean, nothing modify, rooted or anything. I am new to this, please share links, answers, reply if you have to help me get to know S3, android world (i know alot of stuff with iphone though )
Edited: I would like to know HOW do you UN-install a app in android copmletely too . there are alot of app when i update to 4.1.1 but i never need them.
Not sure what your trying to ask but if you want to update to latest firmware 4.1.2 stock, you can just download samsung kies and just update using the Kies software.

If i update to 4.1.1, kies ot OTA. HOW CAN I DOWNGRADE back to 4.0.4?

once rooted, you can never go back?

Once you root a phone, is possible to go back to a fully stock rom?
backstory:
not long after the s3 was released, i rooted it.
a month or so later, i went back to a stock rom.
what i noticed, my phone never seemed to update to the latest releases.
doing it wrong?
You can Odin back to 100% stock unrooted if you really want. The download link is in the Android Development thread. It has the latest update available both rooted and not. Fact is, there's not much reason to give up root for an OTA as a stock release will be available here within a day or two - sometimes hours. And if you're worried about your carrier if you had to turn the phone in, they really don't care. Just get rid of the custom ROM if you can.

STOCK FIRMWARE: http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625
Why would you want to is a better question?
Aside from returning for warranty, I see no reason to ever unroot!

Tried one of the custom ROMs on here, no real issues.
Tried CM10 and it was a total cluster-fok.
Only reason I liked being rooted was tethering and adblocker.

So don't update to 4.4.2?

Plugged in my Z1c to my Mac and now I have an update ready for me. Im assuming its for KitKat. But I have read a lot of threads saying there are a lot of problems. So should I just stay on Jellybean then? Will these problems be fixable by another update if Sony does respond to these problems? If not i'll be staying on 4.3 for a while then. ha
I dont have any issue with 4.4.2

Everything is fixable by Sony, should they wish to do so
That said, I've been running KitKat (UK unbranded) for a week now without the kinds of issues reported by others - only the crackling notifications, but I can live with those and it's pretty certain Sony will fix that sooner rather than later. So YMMV.
I'm new to Sony phones, but tbh this kind of rigmarole over updates has been the same with *every* Android OEM I've been with so far. HTC even pulled their KK update for the One Mini within days because of its bugs, and over a month later they still haven't put out a fixed version ... hopeless.
I am since sunday with the KK and no issues at all, my battery runs ok, ram memory got better and phone calls and camera no problem.
i made by OTA with no wipe. for me looks prety safe, i think most people who run in some problem are those who unlock bootloader or mod the phone.
I am not rooted or so, waiting a good reason to do it(4K video recording could be one)

I see. Then I might update since I am not rooted or have an unlocked bootloader either.

I just think this maybe is cause the problem of most people here, my opnion, the only one i ocasianly have is that when I answer a phone call auto go to loudspeaker, but i had that so often with 4.3 that had with 4.4 looks the same(some people say to disable chrome thats dont happen anymore)
auto mode was a catastrophe already on 4.3. my batery is runing good and i play dead trigger 2 and GTA with no lag.
for me, personaly, the update is ok
Until now i didn't find any bugs, what i did was... updating to 4.4 and after install it i did a factory reset. It runs smoothly with no problems until now.
All of those have "NO" problem with KK bug, short survey below.
Are you: -
1. Rooted?
2. Unlocked Bootloader?
3. OTA update?
4. PCC update?
5. Factory Reset after update?
6. Flash using flashtool?

I flashed the UK unbranded with Flashtool. This option should be added to your list.
I do have crackling notifications though - although strangely only with the Sony supplied ones, the Hangouts sounds are always fine. The ways of Sony are mysterious
So I upgraded to KitKat. Seems fine right now except my camera freezes. Any fix around this?

[Q] 4.4.2 OTA Problems

I have had several issues with the 4.4.2 OTA update on my I747 . The most annoying is the battery drain and "hot phone syndrome" which apparently is a bug related related to the camera daemon. Details can be found here http://tinyurl.com/KK-Batt
My goal is to throw 4.4.2 in the bit bucket and go back to stock 4.3 (when life was perfect), however I am leery of the older ROM's running on the newer NE4 bootloader and modem. I have done much reading on XDA for the past week (scortched eyeballs) but haven't found a 4.3 ROM that gives me any confidence ( they all state specifically to flash the MJB or MJ2 level firmware)
Has anyone sucessfully accomplished running 4.3 on the new NE4 bootloader / modem ?
I read a post from @DocHoliday77 that said this "should" be possible .....but I cannot afford a brick. The phone is my ISP, as I have no cable or DSL available , just a mediocre LTE signal from ATT (for which I am grateful)
I am considering this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504903
Thanks for any info or suggestions that you may have
You can flash any ROM you like as long as the ROM does not attempt to flash a new bootloader or modem.
The reason many ROMs require the 4.3 bootloader and modem is the fact that the ROM requires these two things to function properly.

Thanks for the response audit13 , that all makes perfect sense ..... I was hoping maybe someone out there had suffered the same plight and tried this solution.
I read that the problem won't be corrected until android "L" (they attempted to fix it in 4.4.3 but failed). To me this is like Ebola for Android so I don't understand the lack of urgency by Google to correct it ??? Also, one would think a developer would have suffered this plague and been motivated to fix it.
This is not necessarily a Google problem. Samsung ROMs use Samsung kernels, not stock Google kernels.
Samsung is on 4.4.2 while custom ROMs are at 4.4.4.

Yes but the problem exists in the Nexus line as well, looks like Sam inherited it in the source code. I have thought about trying a different kernel , but IDK if the problem is with the kernel or the daemon or a combination of both.
@audit13 since I am mostly a NOOB here maybe you can help me. I am about to try a custom ROM but am leery that they may mess with my bootloader and modem (NE4) is that possible or typical when you flash a ROM? or do they always state it if they do?
I was running the latest version of Liquid Smooth 4.4.4 and never experienced excessive battery drain or a hot phone on my Nexus 4. After a few days, I installed a custom kernel and my battery life improved but not by very much. Maybe I have been lucky with my Nexus 4. I tried Android L on my Nexus 4 for a while but didn't like the interface. Again, battery drain did not appear excessive on L.
I Don't have KK on my s3 as it is running 4.3 bootloader and modem with a custom ROM.
It is possible that a custom ROM will attempt to flash a bootloader or modem but I have never seen this happen other than a couple of ROMs for a Nexus 4. To ensure that a new bootloader/modem is not going to be flashed to your phone, make sure you look at the first few posts for instructions and warnings.

Thanks for the feedback @audit13 much appreciated ...... I feel better now. I think I will try upgrading first since there has been no specific feedback on downgrading and my gut tells me it may not be the best idea SlimKat 4.4.4 looks interesting.
Hopefully you will not see a post from me in the future that starts with HELP !!!
I also have never seen a rom that flashes the bootloader or modem. Doing so would be a HUGE mistake!
