Hi guys. I'm in trouble. I have a rooted nexus 7 2013 which was working just fine for a couple of months. Then abruptly it seems to have bricked itself.
After checking my mail, I closed my magnetic case as usual. Then when I opened the case as usual a few hours later I discovered it had powered itself off. Strange! But I just pressed the power button and it started booting up. However it got to the X screen and just stayed there. I rebooted several times always with the same result.
So I tried powering up with the down volume and power button pressed and it took me to a screen with "restart bootloader" which I did, and then 'start". But no difference : it stays at the X screen and no further.
I then went to the recovery screen and got the open android robot with a RED triangle and explanation mark. Going power up or down did not bring up any other options
Looks like I'm really bricked!
Trouble is that I'm away from home and will not be back for 3 weeks. I therefore don't have a computer to connect to and try to do something. Only the nexus 7 to work with.
The nexus is rooted and I have TWRP recovery backups on it but no way to access them.
Is there anything I can do to recover from this brick? I really need help and I'm an android newbie.
U are not bricked.. Hold down the power botton for a while. It should turn off.. Then turn it on... Bricked is when u have no power at all.. Nada dead..

You are not hard-bricked and your tablet can definitely be recovered. The problem is, you will be away from a computer for 3 weeks. You kind of a catch-22. If you could boot up into your ROM, you could download ROM Manager and flash a new recovery/ROM to be able to boot up into your ROM. Without a computer, you might be bricked for the next 3 weeks, sorry OP. If only you could borrow someone's computer for a bit just to flash what you need to flash...
Maybe you could use USB OTG to transfer the files you need from like a phone or something? Although, since you can only get to stock recovery and your bootloader, I'm not sure if it would be picked up by the host device... I've never used USB OTG so I don't know exactly what will work with it. I somehow doubt that will help though. Once you get a computer, it's easy to restore your tablet though, so there's a silver lining.
OK, thanks for all the help.
I was able to reset the nexus 7 so I have a working tablet during my travels. When I get home I will restore from backups.
Surprisingly, the restore did not remove root (but of course wiped all my data). But..... It also wiped Twrp so I cannot make a Nandroid backup. Can I reinstall TWRP without access to a pc? How?
Thanks.
Can you access the ply store? Use GooManager
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
From my limited knowledge, as long as you get ANYTHING showing up on your screen, your device is fixable.
Just relax, and start from the beginning. There is plenty of info on this site for getting your device back to stock settings.
Don't let it freak you out. Think of it as an opportunity to LEARN MORE about your totally awesome device!!!
And have some fun with it. Trial and error is what makes this world go 'round.

I have full Internet access with the tablet. Yes I can access the play store and goo manager. Will goo manager reinstall TWRP?
I know that when I finally get home in another 10 days I can use my pc and backups to restore everything via usb. I'm using this as a learning opportunity to see if I can install what is necessary to create a Nandroid backup without access to a pc.

Thanks. Actually, as part of my learning, I searched the Internet and read about "Recovery Tools - flasher" which I installed. Using it I flashed the correct Twrp recovery image, made a Nandroid backup, and now feel much more secure! (Besides proud of myself.....)
Thanks for the hand holding and support.

Hey all,
My power button stopped working and I, thinking it was a software issue, pulled the battery and found out I could not restart. I need to get into recovery or at least turn on the phone to unroot and relock it before heading to verizon.
So far I have had no luck turning the phone back on. I'm sure there is a way to do this... any help is greatly appreciated.
You can use a jig to go into the download mode
And flash a rom

Is the jig the only option? I don't currently have a jig so if that's the only thing I can do I will need to order one ASAP so I can get this thing working.

Are you talking about in command prompt? I tried
Code:
adb-windows.exe devices
which returns " list of devices attached" with none listed.
If you can't get it to turn on they won't be able to either it will probably be fine.

The issue is that the phone is in no way broken other than the power button. I'll have to take it in and hope for the best if I can't figure something out, but I'd really like the peace of mind knowing that all of my files and data aren't stuck on it (I'd also like to get my lastest nandroid or do another one).
I saw a timing trick on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731128 that is supposed to allow the device to boot, but I haven't gotten it to work yet.
Google wugfresh nexus root toolkit
It has a simple one click fix for flashing stock and unrooting when the device can't boot up
Or you can use something like glados cp to relock the boot loader as your rooted then delete the superuser apk in system app

I've gotten the phone into download mode using a jig, but it still doesn't seem to be recognized by the computer. Is this an issue of re-installing the Samsung drivers/adb or a limitation of download mode? Do I need to use odin?

Are you sure you have ADB configured properly for the device to be picked up via command line? USB debugging would have to of been turned on for ADB commands..
I'm almost positive USB debugging is on, especially since I think it's a default option in kang. I can get into download mode but not anything else. At this point I think I'm going to have to use ODIN and lose my data. Stupid power button...
Try removing the battery then tapping the metal battery pins against the phone pins repeatedly.
A friend of mine used to have to do this to get his nexus one to boot.. it can be a bit temperamental but does work.

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed. From download mode you will have to use Odin.
Note: since the device won't actually boot into Android, you don't have to worry about USB Debugging.
Note x2: the only driver that would let my device be recognized was the PDA Net driver, you may want to give it a try.

Well guys, thanks for all the suggestions. In the end I could get nothing to work other than Download mode with a jig and Odin to restore to stock. I lost everything on the phone, including my nandroid backups (should have copied them over more recently ...), but was able to re-lock the bootloader with nexus root toolkit after using Odin to flash the stock rom. ]
Moral of the story, if you lose your power button, you are screwed.

Unfortunately you can't use adb to turn on a powered off device; not saying that wouldn't be awesome.
Hey all,
Yesterday I was about to flash a new ROM on my wifes Xperia S. She had an old ICS rom and I decided to go for the PAC MAN JB 4.2.2 ROM. Seemed ok.
I own a SGS2 myself so I consider myself a total noob when it comes to the Sony.
I know CWM works on on the XS and I am pretty sure I installed it when I romed it last time. Although I didn't remember how to enter CWM mode so I installed it again through that .bat file that comes with it.
I downloaded the ROM and the GAPPS and copied both to the phone. And now I thought I was set and went for it. Of course I did a Nandroid backup before and also from within the phone a full backup in Backup & Restore. Bootloader is unlocked by the way.
So now I boot into CWM and I do a full wipe/factory reset. I clear the cache and dalvik and also I format the system as he guides us to do in his installation video.
I then installed the rom or at least tried. Got the status 7 together with some error I can't remember.
I read then that people had issues downloading the rom with google chrome which sounds pretty far fetched but I decided to do what other did and downloaded the rom from firefox.
Then within CWM I thought to start the USB and copy it directly in CWM since I already had reset the phone and didn't want to go through the "new phone" routine. But the USB in CWM didn't work so I had to restart the phone.
It then got stuck on the initial SONY logo screen and I'm stuck there now.
I have installed the Flash tool from SONY coz I read in another thread that the only way out is to install stock rom. However when I connect the phone holding volume down windows 8 always say that the USB device is not recognized. I have of course rebooted the PC after.
I'm going to try this on my Windows 7 PC as well later after work but I dread I will be stuck there as well.
Can anyone shed some light on how I can get my wifes Xperia S to be recognized by her Windows 8 laptop? Or have I bricked her phone?
I have thought many times that I bricked my SGS2 but always came out on top, I don't want to lose this battle either.
if it says "Unknown Devices" when you plug the phone to the computer, try change an USB line or change a computer
if it says "Unable to install the driver" or another something like this when you plug the phone to the computer, try install the Flashtool driver
...any screenshots?
Windows 8 gives a balloon tip saying exactly "USB Device not recognized". And I did install the Flashtool to get the driver but I guess I still miss the correct driver here.
I will do some more troubleshooting after work. I just thought maybe someone had similar problem and had a quick and easy solution.
It also happend to me, just turn it off and flash stock firmware with flashtool (select all under wipe)

The issue is not actually the "stuck on SONY logo". The issue is that the computer wont recognize the phone when I connect through USB.
What did you use to get the correct driver?
Ok I actually managed to get it connected on my Windows 7 PC.
I installed Emma (Flashtool) and it installed something but I'm not sure really what happened to be honest. Light on the phone was green and it installed 4.0.4 ICS.
It was a success after about 217 seconds but after that the phone didn't do anything. Stayed with green light and when I disconnected it it could not be started at all.
Maybe it doesn't have enough power to start up. It is on 220V charge now so lets see what will happen with it.

Good news y'all.
All it needed after using Emma was some juice. Now it is back to it's normal self. And I'm not going to ROM it anymore. Soon JB will be officially out for XS.
True!! When I was a noob, I tried to flash cyanogrnmod on my galaxy ace (it was a year ago) and I stuck in bootloop. Idk what to do and I regret it, from that day I never flash any rom. But this year I flash xzxperience on acro s and it works but not so happy and then I flash stock firmware to normal. And I regret because i ve unlocked bootloader!! And now BE is not working anymore.

I should have not done this.
After one last message (something like copy binary from SD card) the device was dead.
Any help is highly appreciated

No I cant.
All combinations (power, volume home etc.. failed)
Removed back cover, disconencted battery
No result.
How did you remove the back cover?
I've been able to get mine out of pickles not involving the /boot partition by holding down the volume down, home and power keys simultaneously. Shortly after the model 5110 message displays, I release power and am asked if I really want to put the device into update mode.
I use Odin to write in the firmware I downloaded from samfirmware a few weeks ago.
I needed to do this last night after trying to disable a few system apps. I'm not sure which, probably a thing called "bubble," but as soon as I had, the device froze. A reboot went all the way through but then locked up after my startups finished.
I also needed to do this after something much closer to a soft brick involving trying to use the Xposed framework to change lcd density.
I reflashed and was able to defrost and I was back in business.

I removed it by gently prying the white back cover of.
I would recommend agains it because its delicate.
But I think you would advice me agains bricking my device.

something just occurred to me - you've pulled out your sdcard and set it aside? sometimes a bodgy sdcard can get in the way of boot up, though it seems unlikely here.
It doesn't seem that patching the framework, even if it keeps you from booting past the model # screen, should be able to keep the device from at least powering on.
If you connect it to your PC and try holding in power for ~30 seconds, does any USB device or android device activity occur at all, even if a device appears and disappears again?
I did find that I had a "konawifi" device attached to my PC and needed to update its driver to access the device in CWR mode.

I pulled the SD card
This afternoon I will try your tip (connecting it to the PC)
I also will try a jig although I think this is useless
My last resort is back to Samsung. I have 2 choices, repair or make a frisbee out of it. I prefer the first option especially beacause I was rather pleased with the device
I tried making a jig when I bricked my Galaxy Media Player, and it did not work. Samsung repaired it, eventually.

Im wondering if whoever had it before may have flashed something and messed something up....Im wondering is there a way to upload a rom (verizon) and twrp to dropbox and download it and root it that way and see if that fix the issue...Is there anything in the stock rom that could be missing that could cause this issue?
been looking for a .tar file of cwm to upload to drop box and download it and flash it with mobile odin since my pc cant recognize my Nexus and then download su from drop box reboot to recovery and then flash a verizon rom and see if that fix the issue...Is that sounding like a good plan or not?
SOLVED!!!!!! I figured I would try and swap my usb parts out and that was the culprit....So, it would charge but not allow the pc to see it.....

I have Samsung Galaxy Note 2 sgk-i317 16gb with a removable micro sd.
Yesterday I was trying to reset my phone and I did something wrong.
I somehow deleted my OS
The phone will boot in the "Downloading..." mode or doing the up volume to get to the TWRP page
I booted it in the downloading mode and now I dont know if I can turn it off again to get back to TWRP mode
I tried to install several roms before with twrp, some would say success, but do nothing, others wound simply fail.
Im in downloading mode, but it wont connect to my computer. I figured I could just get it back on Odin and start over and do a clean install.
My computer sees a device, but even after installing several versions of the samsung drivers it wont find it.
Kies wont find it either.
I dont know what else to do. Ive been messing with this for 12 hours now. All my stuff was backed up so I dont mind clearing the phone completely out, but idk where to go from here. Any help would really be appreciated.
