Qi Receiver pad (doodad?) for Kindle Gen1? - Kindle Fire Accessories

Hi, I got a case of Qi envy after seeing a friend who has a qi enabled device (that and the fact that my kindle usb plug is a bit loose). I was trying to find if anyone knows of receiver pads (I think that’s the right terminology, the thing that goes in the tablet, not what one puts the tablet on) out there that would work on the kindle gen1. Mine is still humming along ok, not planning to get another one for at least a year so this would be really quite handy!
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated!

Car Charger Spec Query

i am looking for a decent [working, cheap and quick charging] car charger.
I know I'll need at least a 1amp [right?] however i have seen a few that charger at 1amp and 2.1amp
is it going to ruin my battery if i use 2.1amp?
anyone found and goodies out there?
thanks
I second this request, i've got a few generic car chargers from older gear that i've tried with the galaxy nexus. So far they all come up as charging via usb, and so the phone loses power when the navigation/bluetooth/etc/etc is all on. I understand the power requirements, and looked into the data-cable soldering malarkey solution, but my soldering skills in the "fire hazard" class at best so i'd much rather an off the shelf solution.
I'd be very grateful if anyone could point out a car charger that they know/strongly suspect works fine.
Cheers
so the same car charger i've been using for my nexus one for navigation won't work with the GNex?

No, but it won't charge the battery faster either.
More amps is fine. Your phone will only pull what it needs, even if more amps are available.

Also be aware that even though some car chargers state they can supply >1A current, some phones (like my Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus) will not recognize it as a high speed charger.
Smartphones and other devices check to see if the data pins (D+ and D-) are shorted or have a specific resistance before activating high-speed mode since normal USB data specifications say that devices should only pull <500mA from the port.
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IW79ZC/?tag=68656c7064757-20, which is supposed to supply 1A, but I when I plug my phone in with a normal USB micro cable, it says it's charging through "USB" vs "AC", where "AC" is the high-speed charging.
I've made a hacked cable adapter, though, which has the data pins shorted. When I use this with the car adapter, it charges at full speed. You should check to be sure that your phone is fully utilizing the charger by going into the Settings > Battery menu.
Hi all,
I thought I'd share how I've gotten on. There's a 2.1a charger that maplins sell that I thought might do it, but alas no - still comes up as "Charging(USB)". I know taFFer solved the problem with a little solder, and a lot of forum threads also suggest the same fix, but the last time I picked up a soldering iron actually ended with a trip to A&E (long, embarrassing, story) so I was still keen to find an off the shelf solution.
Anyway, after reading a lot more forums, I found a few different people recommending the same motorola charger. Amazon UK sell it, so I stuck in an order. Details below:
MOTOROLA P513 MICRO USB IN CAR CHARGER, £5.45*
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000S5Q9CA
*above item(s) sold by and shipped from Keep Talking
It arrived today and sure enough simply plugging it into the car results in it appearing as Charging(AC). I've not gone on a long enough drive to know about charging speed when gps/bluetooth/etc is all going, but if anyone else is after a cheap car charger that just works without hacking your own cable I think this is the one.
Cheers
***EDIT***
After criss-crossing the country over the xmas period i can tell you this charger is working fine for me. Even when using all the gps, bluetooth, screen on, etc that i can muster (while still driving straight!) the phone gains power and would often come out the car more charged than when it went in. The charger has one annoyance - they've built in a blue led to the charger which is lit up the whole time the thing is plugged in and thats kind of distracting, i don't really know what they were thinking with that, but otherwise i've no complaints.

Sometimes, keyboards work with nothing more than an OTG cable. Unfortunately, a lot of things won't work simply because of the power draw. If I'm not mistaken, the KF's USB OTG out is i only around 3V, quite a bit less than the usual 5+V a normal USB device needs. For something like that, you need a powered hub.
But even with a powered hub, some devices just won't work. I haven't seen anything about your particular keyboard so I couldn't say for sure whether or not it would work. At the very least you should check the power draw to see if it exceeds 3V by very much.
I swear people were saying this keyboard worked.. Hmmm..
Where can I find the power draw?

That may be the case, I'm just telling you what to look out for. I don't use OTG so I'm only going by what I've read. It's possible the ROM has something to do with it, but considering it's Hash's recent release, I doubt it.

Generally speaking, any electrical device should have it printed somewhere on the device itself. In some cases, like the KF, you have to look to the AC adapter for an answer.
Did you by any chance have any luck getting a keyboard to work on the kindle fire? If so, what approach did you use?

usb port repair/replacemet

One of my fires won't charge reliably. I am hoping to repair/resolder connections.
I found used motherboard for fifty dollars. Used board will be last resort.
Any pics or previous experience from anyone that might help.

I'm not quite sure what that means exactly.
The reason I'm wondering about which ROM the affected Kindle is running, is because the ICS and JB ROMs have had a similar charging issues from the very beginning. The latest version of the kernel was released last night with the charging issue fixed. You may want to upgrade before attempting anything like soldering on your USB connection.
Hopefully it is just the known ROM issue, which has now been fixed. I had difficulty charging my KF because the USB connector was coming loose from the mb. I had a hardware engineer attempt to re-solder it but he was not successful. The connector is very small and it is very difficult to re-solder. If it is a loose USB port, and you can get it back to stock, Amazon will replace it under warranty.

Go with the used board, but be sure that they match in serial number. The earliest releases of Kindle Fires used a different motherboad connector for the LCD, and are incompatible (found out the hard way). A good case opening kit helps keep from damaging the unit.
Motherboards are very hard to come by...
In that case, buy a unit with a broken screen on ebay. Make sure it's one that still powers on and charges (many will show the lcd working below the screen. More expensive, but you can keep the battery as a spare as well.

Not sure how to identify board revision on ebay?
Ask for revision number and/or serial number and make sure that they match. Even better, get a picture of the board so that you can see they are the same.

If it is just a kindle with a broken screen someone is trying to sell, they probably arn't willing to crack it open just to check the motherboard.
Don't buy without proper info. Buyer protection only works so well.

Thanks for all the replies.
It looks like if I had a nice hot air rework station I could repair it in just a few minutes. Right now just prying on charger connection to continue charging. I may just wait for it to die completely, afraid I will kill it with soldering iron.
if you make a TWRP backup and copy it to the computer, if/when you replace the motherboard (getting cheaper as the new Kindle Fire rolls out), you can copy this bac kup folder back to the new motherboard and restore. I have done this when I get a solid working JB ROM on a system, just so that I can go back to fresh quickly and easily. Also, suggest that you use Kindle Nullifire on any board bought from anywhere, as it will zero-write the internal sd card, and avoid issues more issues than you would imagine. It's worth the extra 10-15 minutes to do so.
Of Kindles and Chargers and Broken USB Ports
Kindle Battery:
Most of the inside of your Kindle is a huge battery. It requires a ‘hefty’ charger to charge it and keep it healthy.
Chargers:
While the Kindle Fire calls out for a 1.8 amp charger, I would recommend a 2.0 amp charger for the Kindle. iPad 2 chargers, 2.0 or 2.1 amp rating, with USB ports can be used with appropriate USB micro charging cables to work really well.
Many chargers are over rated and many have cheap thin wire that cannot deliver enough amperage to the kindle port and it will not "shift" into charge mode.
A Kindle will pull about 700mA from a charger, and the charger rating printing is mostly marketing and most of them do not deliver that wattage on a constant sustained level.
Charger/USB charger cable thickness:
If using USB to USB micro data cable make sure it is a thick wire cable that can push out the current from charger to kindle. Thin charger cables are conduits of squished electron flow and will not “shift into gear” the Kindle into charging mode.
Helpful hint:
If charger is not working, power down kindle and try:
Unplug charger.
Power off kindle
Plug in charger
Kindle should wake up in "charge mode"
Having fixed many Kindles lately, I am seeing charger issues, and plugging and replugging the USB cable in cause 50% of broken USB port problems.
Hope these hints will help.

[Q] USB Port

Has anyone replaced the USB Port on their first gen Fire? Mines gone to $h!t due to reading/fiddling while charging in the bed. I'm past the point of propping something under the charger to help it make connection. I've opened my Kindle and it looks pretty straight forward, I was just wondering if anyone had done it and could possibly point me towards a good tutorial or even a trustworthy site to order the part from. I'm no wizard but I'm pretty capable with a soldering iron.
I had a similar problem. I spent a great deal of time trying to find a replacement port but I was never able to confirm the exact part/model number of the port. I finally gave up and had a friend (he is an engineer and builds proto PC boards) attempt to resolder the original port. After 2 unsuccessful attempts I gave up. He was able to get the charging function to work but it wouldn't communicate with the PC.
Anyway, good luck. IMO the best option is resolder if the surface of the board isn't to badly messed up and you are very good at high precision soldering, or can find someone who is. I looked into having a repair shop do it but it was way to expensive.

Qi Wireless Charging for HDX 7"

I didnt really like how the microusb fits into the port at an angle and was also interested in how the new nexus 7 has qi wireless charging capabilities so i looked into the technology and found that it can be added easily to the HDX without any modifications or warranty voids. I simply plugged the receiver into my HDX and taped it to the back of my tablet. Than i place my MoKo case back on my tablet and to my amazement it was able to charge through the case. It charges somewhat slower than my 2 amp charger directly connected, which is expected. I am more than happy with the results though. If anyone wants pictures just let me know!

its not even noticeable to me. if you dont use a case then this probably would be very noticeable. Theres no way i would pay $159 for this tablet and not put a screen protector and case on it straight out of box.

Do you do all your file transfers by wifi then?
usually yes. if the file isnt large i will use ES file explorer. if the file is large i can always unplug the qi charging receiver usb from the port and plug in the data usb. I do all my movie streaming via my NAS server/networked computers and BSplayer app. BSplayer plays any media file i throw at it rather local or networked.
So it's pretty thin, eh? Wonder if it affects the magnet-sticky Origami case? Hmmm... I need my USB port on my phone for my nav dock, but I *can* try the wireless for the Kindle...
It's a buck cheaper on Amazon with shipping, BTW.

Stupid question / comment deleted. Didn't see the pictures.
Thanks for doing the "research and testing" for us, jeffsrawr... I just jumped on the bandwagon to do the same to our brand new HDX 8.9... your pictures and links were VERY helpful!
Is there any bulge in the back of the case, I'm just wondering if its at all noticeable that the qi reciever is stuck on the back whilst it has the case on.

its super thin... like a business card thickness. i sold off my hdx because i got tired of the amazon fire os menu crap on the side. im glad i sold it as now the root is broken with the automatic update. it will be a great device once the bootloader is cracked... thats if it ever is cracked. hdx was fastest tablet i have tried but nexus 7 just has better customization and and overall experience for me.
i just moved the qi charger pad over to the nexus 7 and it works great on it too. (its 2012 version without qi built in)

The kindle menu really annoyed me aswell, luckily there is a way to remove it. https://plus.google.com/106179306926528043289/posts/3HyS7rVWEp5
The app is called GMD autohide soft keys https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.hidesoftkeys. Also there are various ways to block updates for kindle OS until the new ones are rooted.
Just some further info. I got an iBlason case for our HDX 8.9, and the wireless charger is just a tiny bit out of range to work with the thick-ish case. Too bad, as I can't charge through the case, but the wireless takes priority, so that's staying on. Our old tablet had many issues with the charge port, so keeping the port from getting worn is the bigger priority for me. Thanks again for the idea on getting this to work... I may have to do this with more devices in the future
Question for others who have done this - does your tablet make noises (squealing and clicking) when charging wirelessly like this? When the battery is low, it's louder, so I don't notice this very often, but I was just wondering. Maybe it has to do with the type of wireless charger or something?
I experienced no noises whatsoever.
What's the difference in charge speed compared to cable? About half? More than half?

Thread is 18 months old; doubt you will get a response from an OP. The HDX does not have an embedded Qi receiver. You'd need to use something like this which still utilizes the micro USB port. It that's your problem wireless charging won't help.
Yes, sorry for the lack of reply... didn't see this post. Like Davey126 said, you need a wireless charging receiver which connects to the USB port. If your existing port isn't working, then this probably won't work either.
I taped mine to the back of the tablet, similar to what is shown here: https://community.smartthings.com/t/faq-affordable-hardware-dashboard/36044 (second-to-last picture in the article). I did this proactively since I have had tablets before that broke the USB connection, so I did this from day-1 to ensure the port wouldn't wear-out with use... and it's been working great.
I don't have charge timing information, sorry... it's actually my wife's tablet, and she only charges it when needed and usually overnight. Honestly, due to the large battery in the HDX 8.9, it doesn't seem to need charging very often, which is great...
