Has anybody tried a solar powered backpack??

Since we all know that these phones don't have the best battery life, I thought it would make sense to have one while on the go, so I googled solar backpack and apparently they have been around for a while. Has anyone tried or own one??

I think it would be awesome for hiking / biking being that I use my phone as a bike computer . Wonder if it can be a simple DIY project. Radio shack has solar power kits for misc things.

You could definitely set something like this up, but I'm not sure how beneficial it would be. Maybe for emergencies (natural disaster knocks out power) or for camping/hiking purposes, but these things drink so much juice it would take forever to charge them on a regular basis. That said, it certainly probably wouldn't hurt you, but I'm not certain of the day-to-day benefits.
Also, that item has an output of about 4.5 watts. I think the phone's USB charger does about 10?

i wouldn't use it on a day to day basis. just on those days i would go biking, or to the beach or amusement park. i haven't seen a solar charging kit, they look a little big though from what i've looked at so far

3500 power bank purchased!

I got strong feeling that there are no 3500 inside but needs better to check out the tests. Let me know if u got questions, or need photo or video.

From a full charge of the bank, how much percent can it charge the phone battery to from empty?

Its still charging my phone. And i keep using it meanwhile. I started when phone battery was % 15 and it still run.
Right now battery is 35 and device has lost half of its power. I wrote in the evening final result.

I picked this charger from Thailand for 1000 Thai Bhat just last weekend.
Can charge the note from 45-60% from 1%.
Feedback:-
Not heavy
Sits like an added cover
Charging takes close to 4-6hrs.(Will confirm after few uses)
Charging is mildly slower compared to USB charging from a laptop or your wall charger.
Great for travelling and can fit into your pocket along with the Note.

I confirm everything. Can add that it charged my note from 50 to 100 as well.

The similar power packs I've seen for other phones name them so that the power is the total mAh you have with it attached.
ie. The Note has a 2500mAh internal battery, this pack has a 1000 mAh capacity, so in total your phone now has 3500 mAh of power.
Maybe this one is different, but judging from the size I'd guess 1000 mAh is about right.

my experience with this similar gadgets from china 3000mah instead of charging it actually discharged my note. I can't believe! I disassemble it to find out the huge thin battery is something soft like piece of plaster! But i just couldn't figure out why is discharging my phone..but please don't risk your valuable phone with cheap batteries made in china.

Yeah, I dont either understand why people buy cheap crap batteries etc to their ~500€/$ phone. Like if you have the money to buy this phone you should have money to buy decent replacement batteries if you need them. But it is everyone's own decision if they want to risk burning their phone and in worst case scenario exploding the phone in their pockets. At least I wouldn't dare to risk my phone or my own health with cheap batteries. Peace!

tried a similar pack but with "4200mah". fully drains after recharging the note from 10% to 90% plus. and it takes forever to charge since input only allows 0.5A.

i was considering buying this 4200 power pack but i think i ll just get instead an extra 2700mah battery.

I have bought powerbank with 5600mAh it takes little longer when charging cause output just 1A :silly: but it can fully charged my note for two times

It does really 1000mah inside? And also for other brand with 3500? Because im thinking of buying either 3500 power bank or 5400 extended battery.

I got one from an Amazon seller for $12. I think it's 3,700 mah and I easily get a day out of it. However, it's stupid to use something that large and that adds weight and bulk to such a thin and light device. Especially when it's just as inexpensive and easy to simply buy 2 or 3 stock-sized batteries and a wall charger on eBay. I carry 1 or 2 spare batteries in my back pocket and don't even notice they're there. Why wouldn't you do this?

on my 2nd cycle right now with 26% left im at:
21hs up time, 3hrs screen time about 1hr Pandora. been on 4G/3G the whole time with all my radios on but GPS.
it seems like im getting about 30% more life out of this batt vs the OEM. which seems to be getting me over a full day of use with out needing a charge.

MUGEN is a great brand, i know because i own their battery for my G2 and S2, you get what you paid for man. on test i found that the MUGEN outlast the SEIDO by 30-40 min screen on time under hard benching...now this data is of course base on S2 battery.
right now i am testing Hyperion, look for my post, i will give more update soon as i am on my 3rd full charge right now, will bench by the end of the week. I am in talking with MUGEN and Anker to give me a free sample to do a review on their battery,

id agree that "namebrand" batteries tend to yield better results.
in fact i would have personally preferred a Samsung Extended battery. but i cant see spending $100 one a 4000mAh battery from Mugen when a replacement 63Wh batt from Samsung for my M11x is $125.

Just throwing out counterpoints: It can be a hassle to have to shut down, take the phone out of a case (if you have one), swap batteries and put it back together, etc. With an extended, you don't miss a beat. Also, since the phone is thin and light, having a big, heavy battery isn't so bad -- makes it feel about the same as a lot of older phones.
That said, I'm using a stock battery, but have been considering a nice extended battery eventually.

I just don't see how any one can justify carrying extra batteries on a +600$ phone?
I mean the battery life is great already, not shabby by any means. I got 1d 11h with 3 hour screen on time on my Verizon phone this weekend on stock battery. But no call or hotspot like I do during my work day. But a ~2500mAh would probably last me the whole day even on a work day. I'd pay $45 for that with nice cover. (slightly thicker won't be such a bad thing on this phone)
I have few more days before I can return this phone to verizon for full purchase price of 600 bucks. But it's making me think twice about returning it because it's still 2x better than my rooted galaxy nexus.

Carrying extra batteries, at least for me, is zero hassle. They slip into my back left pants pocket and I never even notice they're there. Granted, I can see swapping batteries being somewhat of a hassle for some people but, even if you had an extra step in removing a protective case, how long could it really take? 1 or MAYBE 2 minutes? This phone shuts down quickly and boots up just as fast.

another 3.7v batter that will die very fast if you use your phone to charge, due to overcharging. as our stock batteries full charge voltage is 4.3 where as that one is 4.2v
unless somehow our phones can distinguish the battery difference,

I always use the supplied wall charger that comes with these so Idk, lots of the extended battery reviews on here are the same voltage & they seem to be doing pretty good.

It's not the charger which matters but the phone itself which charges the battery, it's aiming for 4.3V as that's what it thinks it should have as the stock battery is designed for that. Although I haven't heard a single case of these 4.2V batteries having problems with being charged with 4.3V, that last part can be changed in the kernel and the charger chip driver. I'm getting some knock-off cheap battery myself so I'll see how it goes. This particular one seems quite steep in price @ $30, with proven ones like the PolarCell 2400mAh going out for half the cost.

you won't see the affect right away from overcharging. I use to play with a lot of batteries from RC, overcharging something we use to do get slight edge and boost at start. but it does have long term damage to batteries, specially lithium based. some cheaper batteries even catch fire.

Li-ion batteries have an overcharge protection circuit built into the battery pack itself and should prevent this from happening. If everything is working as intended, it should be impossible for the phone to overcharge a battery. That's not to say the protection circuit couldn't fail itself.
And I too played with RC batteries and you really can't compare those batteries with these. Different types of battery with different methods of charging.

Based off of Amazon, these batteries are the same size as the stock battery.

Any updates regarding your experience with these batteries? I used to own this brand for my HTC Sensation and was very pleased with it. Almost had about 400+ recharge cycles before the battery started to wear out. Looking forward on your feedback!

Well that link does not have it available yet but theres another seller that does at 25 dlls and only 13 left available

Yeah but sometimes looking at the quality of the other products a company produces can make people more comfortable buying something like this. Obviously it's not a review of the mentioned product but it's something to help those looking to take a dive on this product.

Call me crazy but given the inefficient nature of Qi I'd at least want a larger (12000 or more) battery. I've got the anker slim 4500 and it's barely enough for 1 and a half charges (granted I use it while charging), I'd be interested how long this would last while powering the Qi electronics as well as the inefficient charging of the phone.

I wouldn't just say it's pretty good for the price. It's unbelievably low. Your average Qi charger costs $35 for really cheap models while external batteries of 8000 maH cost about $40 each.
However, I did purchase this and I will post again after I try it out and give you guys a review on it, seeing that there is only one amazon review so far.

I have received the charger, and right off the bat I want to say something that I was extremely surprised with. Along with the cheap price, apparently the free-shipping was free 2-day shipping as well. I was rather shocked when I discovered it 2 days after I ordered it.
The device is rather portable, it is roughly twice the weight of an N5 and roughly the same dimensions. With a case on my phone ( I use a Spigen Ultra Hybrid), when I put it on it almost conforms perfectly except the charger is about a half inch longer.
The material is very glossy and easy to get fingerprints on, and looks *sort of* cheap, mainly due to the chrome rim binding it. However it feels solid pretty far, except for a power button rattle.
I have not kept track of the exact numbers, but so far this thing has satisfied me pretty well. This is my first Qi charger, so I am not aware on whether or not it's supposed to slightly warm up when charging, but it does. The charge rate is pretty decent, 1% every 2 minutes it seems like. The wired charging speeds obviously depend on whether or not you're using the 1A port or the 2.1A port, but the charging speeds for those are already cataloged so it is unnecessary for me to elaborate on it.
The LEDs are pretty bright but it is very hard to see them unless you're looking directly from above it. The battery does seem like it's 8000maH (before power effiency decreases, so the battery is actually 5600maH effectively).
I give it a 8/10 as a product. A 9/10 as a product considering the price and shipping. 100% Recommended

How is the qi charging? How many times can you charge it using this on battery and how fast does it charge on qi? If you dont mind me askin.

I picked one up and like it very much! It's a tad longer than the Nexus 5 and about the same otherwise in dimensions. It's quite heavy. The charging works well and it's not picky about positioning. Only wish for improvement is that it's a smooth metallic surface all around so it's easy for the phone to slide. I might lay down some non-grip material over it to improve that.
It's a great deal since it's as cheap or cheaper as most qi chargers and as most battery packs but you get both in one.

Sorry for the bad wording previously, but it charges at a rate of about 1% per 2 minutes. I have not the time to conduct from full experiments but it seems that I was able to get about two full phone charges more or less out of it, which is pretty appropriate.
Another note, the LEDs are so weird. They're sort of like mini flash-lights. As I said, you can't really see them unless you're viewing them head on, but last night when I was charging the battery I could use the LED lights to look around my room. This was no problem though as it did not spread, and I simply flipped the battery over .

This seems like the exact same as another one that's been making the rounds, except it's advertised as 10000 mAh. Look up TX-5600 power bank. They sell a few different colors at dx.com, but I bought mine at Amazon (another brand) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FS1NTMW/. I wonder if it's just plain old deceptive advertising, or if they just use the same shell and put another battery in.
I gotta say, I'm very happy with mine though.

Question:
If i use it mainly as a QI charger and leave it plugged in most of the time..will it degrade the battery?
i dont have a need to carry the external battery around all the time, i just needed a 2nd QI charger and since this was a 2 in 1 for $30 i bought it.
I see that theres an on/off button. IDK if that only functions as an on/off for the battery pack itself or if it also protects the battery from overcharge when it is switched off and used just as a qi charger.

I ordered one of these. Looks decent and charges devices quickly using wired mode. However, Qi charging seems inefficient. After charging up the device overnight, it was drained after a single charge of my N5. Seems to only make sense to buy this if you use a wired charging when on the go and use the qi charging when you're plugged into AC. I usually use this device while plugged into AC on my nightstand so it suits my needs. If I'm in a rush to go out and have a phone or tablet that has little charge, I'll bring this device and charge on the road using a cable.
As for the online reviews, they are likely biased. The seller offers a free gift IF you post a "positive product experience". Doesn't seem like a moral practice to me. Anyways, since the product itself works as I described I completed a positive review. Getting the free gift has been like pulling teeth. The vendor/distributor is inflexible and comes up with unwritten statements that state, "our policy is..." long story here. This makes me a bit concerned if my unit needs warranty in the future. Definitely a consideration if you decide to buy one.
