[Q] Desire keeps rebooting and can't mount sd card - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
All of sudden my good old Desire is being caught in a boot loop. It reboots halfway my custom boot animation roughly at same position.
I tried the troubleshooting guide above [1], but now I cant mount the sd card to reflash my rom or restore the backup
Tried the solution in [13] but to no avail.
Should I reformat my SD card with Gparted now? and then put the zipped rom in the root of sd card and then flash rom? I'm afraid i lost the link to the guide I used
Some info:
Hboot 0.93.0001
AlphaRev Recovery 2.5.1.8.
used Unrevoked 3.21 and Gparted (1gb ext4, 3gb fat32)
S-Off and rooted
Any ideas?

First try this ^. I doubt it'll work as the problem seems to be a usb brick, but its worth a try before doing harder stuff.
If that doesnt work download 4ext recovery as a recovery.img, and flash it using fastboot. (im asuming you've already setup fastboot since you did [13] in bortaks guide). First put the phone into fastboot mode, then run the command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
After that boot into 4ext, go to tools, and use the usb unbrick option.

Well, that didnt work. . Gparted couldnt find any devices. Maybe some usb brick indeed...
Looks like I'm gonna have to go to plan B. Not sure where to find the ' 4ext recovery' file though. Can you point me to the file or some guide?
Thanks for the help.

You can download the recovery here: http://www.4ext.net/ddl/bravo/recovery.zip (extract the zip, and place the recovery.img on your desktop.)
Setup adb if you haven't already http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-set-up-android-adb-and-fastboot-on-windows-tutorial/
Remove the battery from the phone then reinsert. Hold back+power. That should boot the phone into fast boot mode
Open a command prompt window on your pc. Enter "cd Desktop", then enter the command that i stated in my post above.
Edit: Looks like I've been ninja'd by Andu.

Installed 4ext recovery touch 10.0.05 RC8, did the usb unbricking and rebooting, but still can't mount the sd card
What's next?

If you can, buy a Samsung sd-card.

Ah trusty Desire... I knew you wouldn't let me down . Turns out a faulty sd card was to blame. Replaced it with a Sandisk 16 GB class 10 sd card and put a 1,5 GB Ext4 partition on it. Now running Runnymede_AIO_V6.0.4.3_Special_Edition instead of the old Leedroid and I have no regrets I must say . I must admit fooling around with the device was much more relaxed this time around, now that smartphone prices have come down a bit . Looks like my Desire is going to keep me company for a few more years.
Thanks to all contributors for giving my phone a, well..., third life .

[Q] Clorkworkmod cant find sd. Is it bricked?

Hi. I was loading a rom in recovery and first wiped system and data. when I went install the new rom I got the error "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (no such device)". In other words, I have wiped the old and it cant find the new rom.
Previously I rooted by UnRevoked so I have not previously set up android sdk.
Am I screwed
Thanks
Have you tried a different SD card or the CD card in another PC?
Could be a faulty sd, or if not maybe try cleaning the contacts on the card and phone?
the card seems ok. It can be read via USB from recovery.
Is there any way I can set up a terminal connection and flash a rom from my computer?
I'm having the exact same issue with r6. The SD just won't mount even in recovery. When this happens there is literally nothing else to do, we need a solution!!!
Sorry to hear it Doogle. Im out of ideas too
Pretty lucky to not be the only one tho
Just so you know, mine is definitely USB bricked, but the SD thing is stopping me from being able to fix this.
It's quite unusual.
Any idea if its possible to set up a terminal?
or does usb bricked mean your comp cant see the phone?
I set up a thread earlier to find that out. No replies
Yeah when the phone is USB bricked the PC just can't detect it,
so it's impossible to flash RUUs, so I'm up against the wall unless
I can get this working
When Clockworkmod didn't find my SD, but card reader showed it ok, I used SDFormater to reformat card (remowed all partitions) and when formated in recovery.

how do you apply this.. just flash it or do you have to rename it and all of that
it has to be named PB31IMG.. it also must be on the root of an SD card formatted as fat32 (not just fat).

thats not working i formated my sd card along time ago... and when i boot into hboot it just says something about parsing it and doesnt let me update...
I dont mean to insult your intelligence so dont take it that way.. are you sure you are fat32? You can format an SD card in many different file formats.
Connect your phone to a computer and click on the SD card within windows. at the bottom it will tell you your file format. I had mine in fat (not 32) and it would not work. I copied the data to my computer, formatted the card to fat32 and copied it all back and it worked like a charm.
As long as you have a fat32 formatted SD and this file (http://dougpiston.com/files/Recovery/recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-inc_PB31IMG.zip) renamed to PB136IMG.zip in the root of your sd card Hboot will install the file and you will downgrade to 2.5.1.2. I did mine on Monday.
Let us know if you get it working.

I am not sure if it is case sensitive.... i would make it so that it does match the case shown in my post before that. I did mine that way.
Also, when you are booting the phone with that file in the root of the sd card, you have to hold the volume down button and power button at the same time until you get into hboot.
Sorry if you already knew this... its just that there isnt really anything else to it. Let me know if you are still having trouble.

Have I bricked it?

I rooted my stock HTC Desire with unrevoked3. The operation went smoothly but after the last restart, phone won't switch on. It gets stuck on the white HTC screen.
What can I do now?
You can boot into recovery. Turn phone off, hold vol down + power button. When it's finished checking, select recovery with vol keys and power button to select. From there you can mount USB and flash a new rom if you want.
Yes, I can do recovery, and I had my old nandroid image on the card which I restored, but it didn't change a thing.
Flash a rom real quick and see if that works. BTW, when you go to bootloader, what is your PVT? Just curious.
How can I flash it if I can't turn the phone on normally?
PVT 4 SHIP S-ON
Because you use your recovery to mount USB then you transfer a rom across. Then you flash that rom you transferred to your SD card.
I take it you have ClockworkMod 2.5.0.7 or something along those lines? If so, you kind of need Amon_RA recovery because of your PVT.

Yeah, in the ideal world I would be able to find my microSD-SD converter.
Seriously now? It's in mounts and storage. In the real world, if it's in your phone, it stays in your phone. No one knows how to "do things themselves" these days.
And yes, some people do have problems with CWM with PVT4 and so Amon_RA is a lot better since it is more compatible with it.

I flashed newest CyanogenMod and it boots up but when I then go back into recovery and restore my nandroid backup from CyanogenMod beta, it freezes at the HTC screen again.
I had loads of important stuff in there and would really like to restore this backup?

I flashed a custom room and the phone works, but freezes on HTC boot screen again if I restore my nandroid backup.
EDIT:
I got it to work, finally. I flashed new CyanogenMod 7, then restored nandroid backup from CM7 beta, then flashed CM7 full again and voila - it boots and everything seems to be there.
Thanks.

So are you or are you not able to boot in to recovery? Kinda confused. You said that you tried but no luck but then you rebooted and did a clear storage. So were you able to boot in to recovery the second time? If you can, do a full wipe and try flashing a different rom. You can download one to your PC, boot in to recovery, enable the usb drive, push the file to your phone and flash.
Ummm sorry for the confusion .... I'm talking about I held the volume down and power button to get to the screen I believe it's "bootloader" and tried to select recovery so maybe I can do a backup to wen it previously worked but no luck cause the phone wasnt reading the sd card with the backup on it! So I went back to the "bootloader" and did a "clear storage" it worked but the phone took forever to come on.... I did that about 2 times when the phone wouldnt boot pass the htc screen but now it no lingers works doing that! And to answer you guys question no I'm not able to boot in recovery just to bootloader with the options
Fast boot
Recovery
Clear storage
Reboot
USB hboot
If you guys are still confused let me know I will explain further more the phone will not access recovery at All!
As asked... what recovery did you load? Amon_RA or CWM? Also, what HW version do you have?
O I'm very sorry.... CMW
Hw info:
Android version 2.3.4
Baseband version 2.15.00.0808
Kernel version: [email protected] #1 Sat apr 30 04:36:42 edt 2011
Build number: MIUIAndroid 7.29
And to answer your previous question I don't know how to install a new recovery thru hboot .... I hope this helps you
If you can get to your sd card via a card reader to load a new recovery, then follow the steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026. Otherwise, try this first to see if you can at least get sd access again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
Ok will try how do I get a card reader?
If you are on a laptop, most recent ones will have a slot for it and may even have the dock/reader to place it in. You can also get an external one that connects via USB at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Radio Shack. Basically anywhere that sells SD cards. Usually around the camera section. You can also check tigerdirect.com or newegg.com if you can wait to receive it via mail. They usually have bargains that you can take advantage of. If this is your primary phone, then go to a store to get one so you can get your phone working.
Or if you can't get your hands on a card reader, you could stick your card in a different phone (old phone, friends phone, neighbors phone, phone at sprint store, whatever). Then download amonRa recovery from xda (download the PC36IMG version of it). Move it to the root of SD card (i.e. NOT in any folder) using some sort of file explorer on the borrowed phone.
Then put card back into your Evo, boot into bootloader (using power and volume down method you used earlier).
Bootloader should scan your card, find the PC36IMG, and ask if you want to do the update.
Hope this helps.

Ok thank you I'm going to do it in the morning will this still work for me even thou my phone won't read my sd card??
Your hboot/bootloader should still read your SD card fine. Unique problem, but should read fine. You remember which hboot version you have?
sent from AOKP heaven
No but I'll find out of you tell me how to
Well, not really necessary to know, unless you're trying to use some fastboot commands. But, you said you CAN still get into bootloader by holding volume and pressing power, right? Once in bootloader, it will say your hboot info in upper left corner.
In any case, follow the above info about getting recovery as a PC36IMG onto your SD somehow, and boot into bootloader. Good luck. Report back.

[Q] Sdcard damaged after flashing rom

I tried this too...
Here's the problem:
When I flash the rom on my phone, the lonely way I can read my sd card is to enter to recovery mode and format and backup and every thing I want.
When I try to read it or format it with an adapter on my computer or with my phone in the sdcard preferences, it says that the card is damaged.
When I format with the recovery too and try to read with 'mont storage" it's good on my computer and the card is empty. But when I boot on my phone, I have the same message: sdcard damaged!
Other way to use my sdcard is to do a backup and return to my android Froyo and then every thing is all right but I'm not upgraded
I haven't found any way to upgrade my version without having this problem with my sdcard...

Lets try a more advanced partitioning wizard. Download gparted and burn it onto a cd or make a bootable USB. Then try re-formatting the sd-card in that. It could be a case that your sd-card died, they usually come with lifetime warranties so you should be able to get a new replacement for free.

My Sd-card isn't dead, I can explore it from my computer, it's just my recovery that don't recongnize it.
I downloaded Gparted but I don't know how to use it. It's not executing with Windows??
I will try another sd-card on my phone where I will put my restore.
Thank you for helping

It's not the end of the world.. Put the sd-card in an adapter and backup all of your contents, then put it back into the phone and format it. Put the backed up contents of the SD-card back into the phone and you're done.

I'm having the same issue after flashing a new ROM, my 64gig sdcard is saying SdCard Damaged. I can't view the contents on PC as it never mounts the sdcard. I can see the sdcard on my Mac but can't access the contents. I really don't want to format and lose all my photos from my last trip (I know I should have backed up this first, but have flashed so many other ROMs without an issue before).
The funny thing is I can boot into TWRP recovery and still access my ROMs, kernels and on programs from the sdcard. I had the same issue with my 500gig external USB hard drive and I just repaired it using my Mac file utilities, but will not let me repair the sdcard.
Any suggestions to recover my data? Just really want the pictures, everything else is backed up.
