Hey there -
I have a GN2 and before I get myself into a big mess, I thought I'd ask here. I'm no stranger to CWM and installing new ROMS on my phones, but I am in a new situation here. Since I'm a big space user, I used the script method to change my internal SD and my external SD so I have more space for apps.
I am currently running rooted stock with the multi view update and it works with no problem. The next goal, however, is to install CWM and try out some different ROMS. I know that I may or may not be able to do the SD switch, and that's fine. What I am wondering, though, is if I use CWM to do backups/restores, since the script that changes my SD configuration runs on boot, what do I need to do? Do I need to ditch this setup if I'm planning on doing anything with ROMS?
The ideal situation is that I can get a good backup of my current setup with CWM (or some other method), play with some new ROMS, and be able to go back to my current setup if necessary with as little fuss as possible (and of course, avoiding a brick).
Thanks for the help and advice!

ok, i just got a captivate glide from my gf, ive been looking into flashing and rooting for about 3 months, but i JUST got an android (ik so behind) but originally i was looking into sidekick 4g for keyboard but this worked too in my eyes and it was free so i figured why not, but either way i wanted to root and flash, but now im at a barricade that im not sure if to continue or not, i rooted using one of the threads directions
this one to be exact
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082
i ran into a barricade here at first, the initial set up wouldnt run, i fixed that by doing the Vol. Down plus Power recovery mode i think its called, and clearing memory then rebooting and it worked fine, i was rooted and had the super user app as well (some boxes from widgets were invosible like accuweather and the android assistant thing but, thats ok).
ok next step i knew if i was supposed to try to flash a rom i should back up EFS which i did with some difficulty (such as figuring out i needed busybox lol)
ok now my next step was installing ROM manager by clockworkmods
NOW onto the actual part i need help with that i couldnt figure out myself (and excuse me for being newbish here too as i dont know much but im not bad with tech either but i felt i damn near bricked the phone in the process already so i WANT to continue with guidance before i do anything else)
now that im rooted, now that everythings backed up on my computer and ive got rommanager and everything
what now
will i still be rooted once i flash a rom? will i still have busy box, super user, all of that stuff? (as the thread i rooted with clearly said that was flashing a rooted rom)
and theres some other personalization questions i need help with too but thats more towards once ik what direction im going in
and uh.. not sure if it matters but im on metropcs service, so occasionally i get issues if i have to reset the phone at all as i have to change the ANP or ADP cant remember the acronym but ive got to change it from some t-mobile one to the metropcs one, i dont see why that would matter but, its a just in case emasure, also im using the ATT one not rodgers (not even sure what rodgers is tbh)
EDIT: OH one last thing. the rooted rom is gingerbread.. thats my main reason for wanting to change it.. i want kitkat, or would prefer kitkat, but id like some opinions as well on what perhaps the best ROM would be, im not sure between omni-rom and cyanogynmod which are the main ones im looking into, but, again, get more into that later
ok now
now im looking through the Rom info.. and.. im starting to wonder.. is it even worth it?
what sacrifices am i going to be making if i flash a custom? what all can i change without flashing a custom? and can i still get kitkat without screwing up my root (KIES?? or ODIN??) its just the things like this that make me wonder... i want the root, that much i DO know, theres so much i can do with rooting im seeing this and enjoying this, but i just need some type of guidance as to what to do, and if theres a better place for this thread please feel free to move it as i do see that it might be ok to have under general ndroid questions, but, i wasnt all too sure on it as this isthe phone im using so any issues deriving from the phone type might screw someone up
Most of the custom roms are rooted already.
There is only 4.0 official, no kitkat. We dont have odin custom images, nor KIES. You must wipe your data, system, boot parition, install KK means clean phone for you.
I think KK is better then official, but it has some limitation.

ok.. im confused then, cause i had kitkat on it when i used kies to update firmware, or atleast i thought i did, perhaps because both had 4 and i was sleepy i was confused lol, and sorry but if KK doesnt mean KitKat then what does it mean. and how high will a custom Rom take me in terms of lining up with official, just to ice cream sandwich?. and.. cyanogenmod, ive been tempted to get it but.. im not sure exactly which one to get because when i was on the site i only found captivate in the devices not captivate glide
EDIT: one more thing, as far as wiping the phone clean and starting over, what do i use.
and of course if you say the rest are rooted, then whats one of the best kernels and roms to use then, its true i want atleast ICS on here, so.. if im right i looked up KK, do you mean KKlauncher the app?
well...
ok i soft bricked my phone, it just shut down in middle of installing some fonts, and for some reason i cant restore it even tho i created a back up as it advised me to do so, i get errors in CWM recovery,
now im about to just do this
using this as a sort of reference so people can keep track of me if something else happens that i mess up..

I mean KK is kitkat. I dont know what did you read, but there is ICS the last official.
Cyanogenmod and other custom roms has own official support, that what you can download rom their site. We dont have official support from them, you cant download those roms from there. You can found download link in rom's threads.
Start reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2623635
I preffer CM11, but yon can found many other KK roms.
If you brick you randroid, just reinstall same you had.

hell i got it back on default ICS now lol, i screwed it up XD and yea ik you guys dont have the downloads your selves but the links and guidance of what i should be doing is basically what i was after ill look at the link you gave me, i think im going to chill out with the flashing right this second, but ill pick it back up later im sure, i atleast liked the cpu setting apps. made my battery last much longer and for what time it lasted i loved it
ok another thing im concerned with is alot have bugs that are deal breakers for me, such as messing up the keyboard (the whole reason i have this phone)
and looking through it i do like CM11 too
but looking at your post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588304
can you explain what you mean by the fixed rotation and skype issues,
and perhaps is there a full feature list somewhere? thats one big thing i want to look at if possible, i usually just keep seeing bug fixes on any ROM
Voip apps (skype, vibert etc) have strange sound, only temporaly fix exists.
When you take a picture with camera, it has fix rotation, I dont remember witch position is the fixed one, but you make photos with different rotation, the picture will be rotate 90/180/270, and you must fix the image.
Most importan bug are: phone call sound doesnt work with BT devices, and voip sound is buggy.
Hi Friends,
Long story short, I am over all the Samsung specific features on my Note 3, and am ready to have a bit more performance and speed by moving to an AOSP/AOKP ROM. Last time I flashed was a LONG TIME ago, so I need your help in getting me there. Appreciate the help in advance!:
My Setup: Knox 0x0, ROM/Build: N9000TUVUDNE6 (T-Mobile Stock) - (Rooted with CF-Root, I believe), NO CUSTOM RECOVERY
1. I HAVE TO install a Custom Recovery to get an AOSP/AOKP ROM installed, correct?
1A. If yes, which Recovery would you recommend installing?
1B. If no, what are the ROMs that I can install those and links for it?
2. If a Custom Recovery is required, this will trip my KNOX count to x1, correct? And there is NO way to avoid it?
2A. If it CAN be avoided, how do I do it?
3. What is the BEST AOSP/AOKP ROM available out for the T-Mobile Note 3 right now? I am looking for the balance features and performance.
4. Are there any outstanding AOSP/AOKP issues that are big and NOT working right now, like Camera, GPS, Bluetooth and etc?
5. Do I have to install a special Kernel or firmware to move over from TW to AOSP/AOKP? If so, which one? Link?
6. Lastly, if a Custom Recovery is required, do these steps sound right for this transition:
1. Backup everyone on my TW phone RM, TitaniumBackup and etc
2. Install Custom Recovery
3. Do a Nandroid of my TW ROM
4. Wipe all Caches, System like 3 times
5. Install the AOKP ROM
6. Install GApps
7. Profit
Did I miss anything? Thank you for your help in advance!

1. I HAVE TO install a Custom Recovery to get an AOSP/AOKP ROM installed, correct?
Yes, you need to install a custom recovery.
1A. If yes, which Recovery would you recommend installing?
Usually people recommend TWRP as their recovery of choice. You can download it at https://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/hlte/ Download the .img.tar and you can flash that as AP in Odin.
1B. If no, what are the ROMs that I can install those and links for it?
2. If a Custom Recovery is required, this will trip my KNOX count to x1, correct? And there is NO way to avoid it?
Yes, it will trip KNOX to 0x1. There is no way to avoid it, unless you have a Canadian Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900W8)
2A. If it CAN be avoided, how do I do it?
3. What is the BEST AOSP/AOKP ROM available out for the T-Mobile Note 3 right now? I am looking for the balance features and performance.
All user preference. I like CyanogenMod for frequent updates, Carbon for the UI. Currently running Temasek's CM as it is a good mix of both Carbon and CM, imo.
4. Are there any outstanding AOSP/AOKP issues that are big and NOT working right now, like Camera, GPS, Bluetooth and etc?
Biggest issue seems to be the S-Pen not working after a while (requires a reboot) and NFC is not functioning, but some users have reported it to work with the SM-N900T
5. Do I have to install a special Kernel or firmware to move over from TW to AOSP/AOKP? If so, which one? Link?
You shouldn't have to install a special firmware, provided you're on the latest build of KitKat for the Note 3.
6. Lastly, if a Custom Recovery is required, do these steps sound right for this transition:
1. Backup everyone on my TW phone RM, TitaniumBackup and etc
2. Install Custom Recovery
3. Do a Nandroid of my TW ROM
4. Wipe all Caches, System like 3 times I have never seen accurate reports of this doing anything useful. Do the full wipe in TWRP, it will do everything you need to wipe.
5. Install the AOKP ROM
6. Install GApps
7. Profit
Essentially that's everything you need to do. If you want, you can install a custom Kernel, or install a flashable zip of SuperSU if you want to use that (compared to the built-in Superuser)
Hope this helps!

Ska, that was very helpful bud, thank you for responding!
Two follow up questions:
1. In an AOSP ROM why would one even need the S-Pen?
2. What are the main differences between CM, AOKP, PA, Carbon and etc and where can I find their best, baked versions? By best I mean, most updated developer support and popular?
Thank you again for your help!

People use the S-pen as a stylus for their phone, without any if the features that Touchwiz provides.
As it stands, CM is updated every day with a nightly build, and our device maintainer has been on a tear recently. Carbon is updated frequently too.
My recommendation would be to try out temasek CM11, it has a good mix of all the AOSP features. Tons of stuff to customize!

Don't care about WiFi calling, but what is voice of LTE? Is it anything related to having data connectivity WHILE being on the phone as well? As in, will it switch to a CDMA like behavior, where data does NOT work, when you are on a call?
Cause I can't have the latter. What does Voice over LTE mean? Thanks for your help!
P.S. Any direct links to some of these ROMs you guys are using? Thanks.

Normally on a phone call, your phone will go from LTE to 4G. This allows the phone to be on LTE the entire time because it makes the call go over LTE (as data, but it doesn't count against your data). If you wanna see what it's like without it, go into the dialer, hit menu, settings, and set it to never use it. Then make a call.

AT&T has VoLTE in limited markets, but I believe that you can only use it by flashing an AT&T based TouchWiz ROM.

Ok just thought I'd throw this out there at the risk of being thought of as "rude", even though I'm actually just trying to help. I've been a member of this community for a really long time now and it's an excellent source of information along with a lot of great people who are always willing to help, and you can definitely get the most out of it but you also have to be willing to help yourself. Helping someone who doesn't understand something is totally different from helping someone who says "fetch me a link because I don't feel like doing it myself". I'm certainly not saying that was your "intention" so hopefully you don't take it that way, I'm just trying to put it into perspective as to how it can come across to those who are taking their own time to help you out. Odds are people who are willing to help also don't really care for doing menial work (like searching for links, etc.) which basically everyone is capable of, so I'm just saying that it might help to keep that in mind. Another thing to remember is that 99.9% of the questions you'll probably ever think of have been answered or solved already, so when you do take the time to become familiar with stuff like the basic forum outline, searching, and how to rate and subscribe to threads, it's actually surprising how self sufficient you become just from learning those things. Anyway like I said I'm not trying to be ignorant or "bash" you whatsoever, just thought I'd throw that out there because most people on here will always be willing to help whenever they can, as long as you're willing to help yourself! Hope it helps man

Before you go and install other roms, what issues are you having with your phone? If it's just the touchwiz launcher, you can always install Nova Launcher and use Titanium Backup to freeze touchwiz and any bloatware that's in the way.

There are definitely different apps you can use. Most people use Evernote, CM S-Pen Addon and Note Buddy. I don't think there's a way to get it to work right on stylus removal though.
I am running hashcode aosp jb rom and it works well, however when I try to load any kk rom it will work the first time and allow me to do a complete setup using gapps for my play store and google stuff. The next time I reboot or power off and restart my kindle it hangs at boot animation screen forever. ( OK I have left it for more than an hour before, not forever )
This happens with any kk (non otter x ) rom and any gapps file. It will even happen if I don't install any gapp.
I am using twrp 2.7. ? (I can't remember the last part) Has someone had this happen to them and if so did you find what to do to fix this problem. I would like to have the better memory management of kk rom for this old device. And it bugs me that I can't get it to work. Thanks for any help or advice.

So i bought a FreedomPop LG G3 on sale and i ended up activating it to FreedomPop and i rooted it, and im wondering if i can install Marshmallow or cygn on it, my concern is.. before i bought the LG G3 i had a first Gen MOTO G from TextNow with there own unique ROM and when i installed lollipop on it, since the phone has no sim card the phone lost connection to TextNow and was basically useless outside the house so i had to ask TextNow to send me their unique Rom which they did and after installing it everything came back to normal.
now my lg g3 has a sim card slot, and came with sprint apps on it and showing sprint on lockscreen and everything. calls can be made from the android call app but texts messages are only available through FreedomPop text app.
i asked FreedomPop to unlock my phone and they said no problem doing it for me but i ended up not doing it since i do want to stay with them but then i want a different ROM.
so my questions are:
1.is there a way to backup an stock rom that came with the device so i can restore it just like i did on my TextNow incase i lose connection like before?
2.is there a way to backup FreedomPop like apps and restore it after changing the rom? will they work after installing them?
3.should i install a different rom?
4.anyone had an experience with such "locked" phones or even FreedomPop phone and can tell me how did it work for him?

If it has sprint apps it is probably an ls990; check in "about phone" settings to make sure. So basically follow the ls990 thread(s) to see how to get recovery on it... http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3 . Since you have root already installing a recovery should be a simple process via flashify or autorec apps - but you need to absolutely make sure you install the correct recovery file with the bump exploit or you may softbrick and have to restore with a PC. (bump is an lg g3 exploit needed for our device as we don't have a true bootloader unlock)
Re #1: if/when you put TWRP recovery on your phone you can make a backup of your freedompop stock ROM so you can restore it if you need to.
Re #2: since you're rooted you can backup all of your apps and their data with titanium or something similar. I use titanium pro because it allows you to make a zip file you can flash in TWRP while flashing your ROM, gapps, etc. & it restores your app data too; super convenient time saver. As far as will the freedompop apps work on a different ROM - they should; trying to restore them and see if they work might be the best way to go there. As long as you have a ROM backup you can restore - why not give em a try?
Re #3: that's subjective and up to you. Some people prefer stock features(especially the camera) and some xposed mods to get some extra tweaks, some people prefer custom ROMs with tons of features and the newest Android version. Again, that's on you to decide. BTW, if you do go custom ROM there are decent camera ports available that come close to stock quality.
Re #4: I have not, but I'm guessing you may need to take note of your APN settings before you change ROMs as they may be unique to freedompop & could mess up your data/text if they are not set right. That seems to be the biggest issue with people using different carriers.
Good luck & hope you enjoy your G3
LS990ZVC
Hey and thanks for your reply, yes my phone is the ls990ZVC (by the way on phone settings under brand it says "sprint" and not FreedomPop)
Q1.what do you mean by get recovery? you mean a costume recovery program on the devices main boot in-case of a problem that will replace the original recovering stock program?
Q#1. the thread you posted is for unlocking the phone? what benefits do i get from it? will i lose the 4G LTE speed like it says on the thread if i do it?
Q#2.i dont care much about camera features and also not looking for a lot of tweaks all i look for is to keep my ram and cpu power low and there for available at all time so basically having the phone act and react as fast as possible. can i achieve that with one of the different roms or having stock marshmallow installed?
Q#3. where do i get my APN settings?
Q#4. I think i know the answer to this but ill ask anyway, having TWRP recovery can save my device from softbrick right?

Hey...sorry I missed the notification that you responded...my bad.
Recovery - TWRP recovery which allows you to backup your current ROM, wipe your device, and install ROMs. You have to have it installed if you want to run any custom ROMs. It is imperative that you use the correct file or you may bork all your software, softbrick, and re-flash on a PC. If you are unsure on how to install TWRP then read, read & ask questions in the appropriate forums - & watch youtube videos if you need guidance on how to install it.
The link I posted was for your device. You can search in the threads for anything from ROMs, TWRP, root, kernels, and troubleshooting if you get stuck.
Stock marshmallow is pretty quick & there are some pure AOSP or basic CM builds available that may suit your needs...just have to sample for yourself to see what's best.
APN settings: settings, cellular networks, access point names; if you see a feedompop apn(or anything that isn't sprint) write down the fields, or take a screenshot and email it to yourself for reference.
Having TWRP recovery saves you from your mistakes. Once you get it installed you can make backups that you can always restore if you experiment with new ROMs or tweaks, etc. It is the backbone of flashing and modifying your phone.
Again, sorry for leaving you hanging. I'll pay closer attention to my notifications in the future

So i went with liquid smooth rom and after having some issues with titanium backup restoring apps i tried a few things and ended up having all system apps crashing on boot (dialer etc...) so i restored back to stock rom and everything works fine but now when i wanted to go back to liquid smooth TWRP says i cant and that the install files might be incomplete, actually it says that way about gapps too.. why is that? also having the problems i just mentioned with the rom, does that mean the rom is not stable.. or it is something i did? should i even try going back to that rom? i mean i kind of liked it in the 2 hours i got to test it before everything crashed. i went throught the link you sent me and eventually figured out that there is a rom section on top of the page where i can actually see the roms which i didnt realize that before, seems like restoring function on TWRP works great but i wish there was a way to just know which rom would work best for my phone in terms of performance which is what im looking for.

My guess is maybe you included system apps in your titanium backup? They are the ones listed in red; you don't want to include any system apps in your app restore/update.zip because they may be incompatible with the ROM you are flashing. So unless you read in the liquid smooth thread of other users having issues, I would doubt the ROM itself caused things to crash.
As far as the TWRP error about incomplete files...I'm not quite sure what that means. But you can take a screenshot while in TWRP(vol down + power) and post it up here to better explain the issue.
If you want to try liquid again try a fresh download of the ROM and fresh download of gapps(make sure you're downloading the correct gapps - LP & MM use different ones). If you run into problems with crashes again, try and flash just the ROM by itself to help determine if the errors are caused by the ROM or the gapps you're using.
I like liquid smooth...used to use it on my galaxy nexus back in the day. There are lots of good ones out there, itjust depends what you like. I usually use Tesla(aosp), but aokp and turbo are both really nice too. If you prefer CM based ROMs there are a ton of them too. Pick your poison.
So to clarify: it sounds like you did everything right - except don't restore system apps with titanium, make sure your gapps are compatible with your ROM, and have fun flashing
