Ok, so many of you, myself included, have had issues with Android 4.3 rebooting your device when you open the gallery app.
If you are like me, and can only produce this issue with MP4 files, then I have a work around for you.
Here's what you need:
-BS Player
-Aftermarket Gallery app of your choice that allows you to EXCLUDE certain folders. (I use QuickPic)
The setup:
-Remove your MP4 files from your device
-Create a folder on your device, specifically for MP4 files
-Open your Gallery, and in it's settings, exclude this new folder
-Put your MP4 files in this folder
-Done
Now what you have, is a working Gallery app that will not RR your device, because it never accesses the excluded folder, where the trouble files are. And you also have an app to play these files, and will not RR your device.
Obviously, all risks are on you, and I nor anyone else can be held responsible if you mess something up listening to people on the internet.
I also know this is not the solution people are looking for, but it works!

Has the reason for the mp4 reboot issue been found? I have also confirmed that MP4s (Not all, depending on settings) is the cause, but have yet to find any resaon why.

Not as of yet. I have sent several LogCats of this instance, and have had several people look at them. Last update was a few hours ago...It's going to the "expert" ...
The issue is that not everyone has the problem. So...all we can do is wait.
Thanks for posting a workaround. Like you, opening the Gallery is fine and dandy. I believe someone mentioned this in the nightlies thread, but I noticed this issue only occurs with mp4s recorded prior to 10.2. A video I recorded a few days ago on 10.2 plays without any indication of difficulty.

If that's the case, then the encode is different... So maybe the gallery is missing backward compatibility for MP4's?

Maybe that's the issue? I'm only speculating here...

Considering streaming intent of the fragmented MP4 file support, I would guess that there's a separate implementation for it to the extent of which the decoding of non-fragmented files would be retained.
Looking at the last kmsg of a crashing video, I suspect the following log entry is probably the source of my failure. Either my existing videos are corrupt in some way, or perhaps you're on the right track and the file header is being read incorrectly leading to explosions.

fixed gallery crash
I found this in the forums.
Backup your DCIM directory and then delete the DCIM directory. When you use Camera it will recreate the directory. Copy everything back into the DCIM directory and then it shouldn't crash anymore.
This is the only thing that worked for me.

No dice. But thank you
ok all i did was go to gallery.3d in .android and delete the folder and restart and problem went away
I just wanted to let you know that this worked for me too. I just transferred the videos over to my computer and removed them from my device's storage. No problem looking through my gallery now. I did switch to QuickPic. I kind of like it. :good:
Thanks!
No need to transfer files
MP4 files are the culprit but there's no need to transfer files twice. Just create a nomedia file in the directories where you have videos. Create a new folder for your videos. Use Quick Pic to exclude that new folder then transfer your videos into that new folder. You can now delete the nomedia file.
Its a shame most people can't be bothered to search and find threads like this or posts about the issue in the other threads. I guess its easier to just make a post about it and wait hours for an answer. Lol

I don't have any mp4 files but yet the gallery problem persists.
edit: I finally fixed my Gallery issues:
I was in need of consolidating my pics because of all the various ROMs throughout the lifespan of my Hercules so I moved the DCIM/Pictures/anything else with a *.JPG or *.3GP (didn't have any *.MP4s but would've done those as well) folders themselves to my PC so that they were completely deleted from my internal and external memory on the phone.
I then took a picture as to let the phone recreate the DCIM/Camera directories and proceeded to put all of the *.JPGs back in that one folder but NOT the movies. After that everything was finally solved and I've flashed several 4.3 ROMs to test.
So it was basically a combination of deleting any pic/movie folders and also avoiding both MP4s and 3GPs when I moved things back from the PC. At least for me, 3GPs were also a culprit in addition to the MP4 issues which others have mentioned.

I've noticed in the last few weeks worth of nightlies that my MP4s which were recorded prior to when this issue began to work again. Kind of...
When I rotate my phone to match the landscape orientation of a video that would result in a reset, the freeze frame preview now updates accordingly, where as previously it would still use the same sized portrait orientation preview. The video proceeds to play fine. If I attempt to run the same video in portrait mode though, it resets.
Good fix

Wondering if anyone can help...
on JB, stock google apps and system apps won't recognize my SD Card at all, while outside apps have no problem recognizing it...?
for example, stock Gallery app won't bring up my pictures, however Quick Pic has no problem. Root Explorer has no problem, Titanium Backup has no problem...but trying to access music or custom notifications for gmail/sms won't show up in the system apps (gmail, mms, etc).
another thing is when I plug my phone into my computer, none of my old files are there (but like I said they show up just fine with Root Explorer or any other file explorer).
I've tried every JB Rom available for Toro, yes I've tried SuperWipe, I've done it all.
Any ideas, fellas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi efrant
Thanks for the suggestion. Gave it a go (tried it twice) but unfortunately it hasn't made any difference.
I'm having the same problem... I did notice that not everything under /data/media had media_rw as the owner/group but fixing it didn't fix the media server issue.
It's definitely a media server issue though as from what I've read it's responsible for listing the files when connected via MTP/USB so I haven't found a fix for it.
I've always thought MTP was flaky. I use ADB to transfer any files back and forth.
Downloading any SDCard rescan app doesn't seem to work... but what I have noticed that if you go to Settings -> Apps -> Running and look under Media, you should see that the service is stuck in the restarting state...

Sejanus,
Mine is restarting too.
I have noticed that if I use a file manager to duplicate an old file (e.g. photo) then I can access it...It looks like some sort of weird permission issue although I have tried all sorts of things to sort the permissions.
I'm using the GNex Toolkit V7.0 to pull everything from my virtual SD card /sdcard and then I'm going to delete everything, reboot, then push everything back to it, reboot, then see if that fixes it.

I just tried, and it didn't work. Double checked, there was no file with a different user/group.
It seems that now my Media is not restart anymore, however I still can't see my files, neither through Google Music / Galery (although some show up), nor using USB to computer (only a few folders show up).
Therefore, nothing yet.
Any clues guys ?
Probably a solution! (at least it did work for me)
Guys, for those having issues with Media process, where Pictures & Musics don't show up, here's the solution that worked for me:
I got it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21746289&postcount=2 (thanks Chrono_Tata).
Based on what Chrono_Tata wrote, I decided to create a ".nomedia" file in my main personal directory, where contains pictures, musics, personal files and so on.
(For those not familiar with Linux, the ". (dot)" in the beginning of the filename is very important! It means that it's a hidden file. You can create it through ES File Explorer)
For testing purposes, I copied some musics / pics to directories out of that my structure.
Then, stopped and cleaned data for: Gallery, Google Music and Media . Afterwards, restarted phone.
Bingo. It did work, and I could see the pics/musics outside my main directory (although it takes a while to re-scan everything, so wait! Gallery and Music will show nothing until scan is complete).
Well, after I realized it did work, I continued in the following way:
1) Delete the previous ".nomedia" file that I created
2) Create a new one under some sub-directory.
3) Repeat process for re-scan
I did it until I found which directory had an issue (btw, my pictures directory).
I think it might be related to thumbs.db file created by Win, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I still have to check carefully my structure to find the issue.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Adriano.
Nice one!
For some reason the same worked with me. I seemed to have some 0k files that were perhaps causing issues. I used your process to clear things out.
Thanks Adriano!

Basically resolved this by
1) Creating a new directory in /sdcard/DCIM and moved all photos from /sdcard/DCIM/Camera to this directory
2) Placed .nomedia files in almost every directory in /sdcard except the obvious ones (/sdcard/DCIM/Camera being one of them)
3) Copied a months worth of photos from /sdcard/DCIM/Camera_bkup to /sdcard/DCIM/Camera, rebooted the phone, checked the gallery to see if all the photos now appeared
4) Repeated until /sdcard/DCIM/Camera_bkup was empty... in the process I removed a bunch of older pictures that were legacy from a non-Android cellphone that I copied over from my first phone
This was after I fixed the media_rw/media_rw permissions that I found as when I used the GNex Toolkit to dump my SDCard and then tried to restore it, all the files had root/root user/group permission set.
There was also an issue with timestamps of some photos where they were actually placed in the future by a few days, which was annoying because as I slid back from a picture I had just taken to the gallery it would show me some other picture then the one I had just taken. This got resolved as the wrong timestamped photos entered the past.
I was on an MCR JB build... I hope I don't have to go through all these hoops when CM10 comes out.

It definitely is. I'll have files missing from the MTP listing, but when I go in and look on my phone, the files are clearly there. MTP is janky at best.
This has been driving me nuts, since when the I/O update came out I flashed and had the same issue, just reverted to AOKP from nandroid.
I have partially fixed the issue by going into Recovery and fixing permissions, now I can see and select ringtones and most my camera pictures. Still many files are not showing on gallery, but I guess its progress .
Edit: Forgot to mention that I tried 4.1.1 and still had the issue, I just reverted to a nandroid b/u of ICS.
i think this issue is caused because the storage is named "sdcard0" the normal should be "sdcard" i tried to change the storage name but "sdcard0" is reed only, so i can't change the name with root explorer maybe someone can try to rename it and see if this issue will be fixed.
any thing let us know because this issue is being annoying.

Check for the file named “.nomedia” (without quotes) in the root folder of your SD card. This file tells media scanner not to search for media in this folder and its subfolders. If you find this file in the root directory then simply delete it. The issue is caused probably by newest ROM manager. Some users report that this file is recreated after reboot. In this case I would temporary downgrade the ROM Manager to older version. Hit the THANKS button if I helped you
I also have the same issue. There's no stray ".nomedia" that I can find in my SD card. Logcat entries contain no related error message.
If you use MXPlayer, in settings there is an option about .nomedia. Diasble it. Sometimes that cause this kind of problems.
Try Wiping Dalvik and fix permissions
Clearing cache, dalvik cache and fixing permissions don't work. Strange thing is that newly captured screenshots and photos appear in the Gallery app right away. The disappearance apply just to the existing images and music files in built-in Gallery and Music app. Third-party image browsing apps like QuickPic are behaving correctly (showing all images, respecting .nomedia on selected folders appropriately.) Third-party music players (Google Play Music, Winamp, etc.) however can't find any music tracks, behaving exactly like the original Music app. Bumping so that yozgatg might take a look.
Alternatively you can use QuickPic and set up included folders manually.

Didn't work. I've tried both fixing permissions from CWM and from ROM Toolbox Lite. I don't think this is a temporary problem that can be resolved by clearing cache and fixing permissions. For images there are plenty of alternative apps that can be used, but it's currently a dead end trying to list music tracks
COPY ALL SDCARD FILES TO A PC FORMAT THE SD CARD AND COPY BACK ONLY THE IMPOTANT FOLDERS LIKE ANDROID AND THOSE CONTAINING THE PICTURES AND MUSIC FILE LEAVE THE REST
HIT THANKS IF IT HELPED:good::laugh:

I would post to either of these two threads but alas, my permissions do not allow.
I appreciate any feedback or solution to this issue.
There's various steps in various posts in that thread, which did you try?
I know either ROM Manager and/or ClockworkMOD Recovery had a .nomedia issue in the past so, make sure both are updated if you use them (or uninstall them if you don't). Additionally, most ROMs have a "rescan media" function (no clue where it is in JB but, it was in Dev Tools in GB).

I just uninstalled Rom Manager but it is still on my phone (it was part of the ROM that I installed).
I also tried to re-update with no luck.
Also noteworthy, when I take a new picture it shows in the gallery. When I use file explorer to browse to the location the new image is stored I can verify that it is in the same folder as all of the other pics that for some reason are not showing up.
I am trying the suggestions here now

There is no .noimage file in the root of my phone. I then cleared cache and dalvik / fix permissions. I have forced gallery closed and cleared all data both in gallery and in media storage, reboot the phone.
No luck yet.
Your ROM is CM based, you should have an app called Dev Tools; run that and select Media Scanner and let it run; otherwise try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner

Thank you for this feedback. I have tried both Dev Tools and Media Scanner. It did not have any effect.
Would the quantity of images and videos have an effect? I have a lot? I doubt it but I am running out of ideas. I appreciate any other feedback. Thank you.
Maybe you have some corrupted image or video on your SD card.
Try to backup all your media files on your computer. Then erase all media files on SD card and add only one picture. Check if the gallery is working. If this picture is there, then you have to find which file is causing the issue.
Add all media files to SD card in some small steps. For example if you have 1000 images, add only first 100 of them. Check if the gallery is working. If it’s working, add next 100 images. If the gallery stops working, remove last 100 images and add only 50. And so on, you get the idea. This way you can identify the corrupted file(s).
PS: Maybe you are wondering why I hit your ”thanks” button That was only a mistake
So I removed all pics and vids and a funny thing happened. It picked up pics in two folders within the DCIM folder. I tried adding a hundred pics back to the camera folder and nothing. I deleted all but a video and nothing. I will test more when my son goes to bed. So weird.

I too am having this issue. I'm running all stock 4.4.4 Clearing the cache removes the actual image but then I have to delete the empty thumbnail manually. That said, after a day or two the thumbnails come back. I am at over 100 thumbnails and it's freaking annoying
I've got also this issue.
Found some instructions but actually none were working for me.

Hi all, I had same issue, here are two solutions, both helped to me:
1. using file manager go to folder "cache" which is in videos, music, photos, delete all folders inside, then change the folder name from "cache" to any other in all three places (music, video, photos)... and that's it.
2. because I had other issues not related to the "thumbnails" I decided to proceed "factory reset" in phone settings, then after that using sony pc companoin I did "phone repair"....
Please try - I can't guarantee that it's 100% working, but both solutions helped me... good luck...

2. because I had other issues not related to the "thumbnails" I decided to proceed "factory reset" in phone settings, then after that using sony pc companoin I did "phone repair"....
Please try - I can't guarantee that it's 100% working, but both solutions helped me... good luck...

Using File Manager, i was unable to locate the Cache folder in any of the folders you listed. (I am under the SD0 folder). Do you mind uploading a screenshot of that folder?
A factory restore didn't fix the issue either.
Hi it's File commander, then go to phone memory then android... Data... Com.sonyericsson.album, com.sonyericsson.music, com.sonyericsoon.movies. Then you will find folder 'files' and 'cache'.thats the one U are looking for. Delete everything inside and change the name. Like I said- it helped to me.

The folder will be recreated, so changing the name is unnecessary. Deleting it just removes old thumbs.
I don't know but in my case it helped for 3 days untill I reloaded full OS because of other issues. I'm not a tech genius...:-B

Dear all,
I have been using RMN5 for a while and this is the most f**cking annoying error in this phone (or MIUI's error - i got it in my LG F180L running MIUI7 a long time ago and it happened too)
Every time i connected the phone to PC, i got this problem, I've followed the tips on XDA about disable media storage and download (force stop only in RMN5) and reboot, ok it fixed for a while, but not for long, next time i connect, it happen AGAIN.
I'm so tired of this sh*t and want to get rid of it.
Please, somebody please show me the way.
Thank you
Don't disable those apps instead go to the app settings media storage and download and clear both cache and data, hopes this will solve the problem and move this post to question and answer thread. It belongs there.
you disabled critical system app and complained why you get error messages
This is the Android Media Scanner, looking for files to index on your storage.
Some options are:
Try creating a file called '.nomedia' in every folder, and the problem should dissapear. In that case you may have a corrupted file somewhere, so try to delete the .nomedia file in some of the suspected folders to see if the problem comes back (or google something like 'android.process.media .nomedia' for a better explanation or solution.
You can also enable debuggind (via developer options), to inspect the problem with adb logcat, or to install a logcat related app from Play Store, in case the dump that should appear at the time of the error contains some hint.

I'm having this issue after updating my Samsung GT-N8013 to lineageos 16.0. When you say to put a .nomedia file in every folder, do you litterally mean every single folder on both the tablet and sd card or a certain level of folder?

The .nomedia flag file will stop the scan in the directory it's placed and all of the directories contained in it.
I ended up reinstalling the the OS 16.0 rom for my Samsung N8013. It took a total of running the installation 3 times but it finally became stable.
