Speaker Hack?

Ok, so I've searched the forum about the speaker quality on the TP2. After playing around with my TP2, I can say that I am impressed with the volume/quality when comparing it to my Kaiser. BUT, the design is a bit flawed when using the phone tilted for watching videos, as mentioned in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=520823
This makes me wonder if there could be a potential hack for the in-call ear speaker, because it's actually very good in quality - much better than the Kaiser. I'm wondering if it can be hacked to be used at a boosted volume when playing back media, thus utilising all 3 speakers on the phone and giving an all-angle audio extravaganza! My old C550 shared the ear speaker as the external speaker, so I'm wondering if something can be done with the TP2 ear speaker to a similar effect.
Any opinions?

I was pretty pissed that my Acer Aspire One's speaker was on the bottom. It's completely useless. In that instance though, there was plenty of room for speakers in the screen bezel where they would have been usable. For the TP2, there aren't a lot of good places to put it. And since they wanted speakerphone access by flipping the phone over, that placement made sense for enterprise purposes.
I do hope your idea improves its media player creds, but I wonder if amped up audio from the front speaker won't end up sounding as flat as muffled sound from the larger speaker(s?) beneath.

Wired Headphones with Mic

Anyone using an aftermarket headset with the phone? I've been using the phone as my sole music player (sorry cowon d2+) and i want to get a bit more sound quality out of them. IEM that comes with the phone is not bad but i keep reaching over for my over the ear headphones and that also means i have to use the phone for conversation instead of leaving it in the pocket
I was thinking of giving the phonak PFE 022 a try. Any suggestions?

I've been using the UE TripleFi 10vi, they work just fine.

Until I recently got my BT headphones, I was using the motorola EH20's. They're inexpensive (<20$), hit like a train ,they sound 10x better than the ones that come with the captivate, literally, I put those ones in once and after that they stayed in the box lol, and theyre really good at noise cancelling. More than I expected for what I paid. and for being headphones, if you put them in correctly, they wont come out. Ive ran with them many times and not once did they fall out.

I was using my Shure 115's ....till I lost them in my gf's messy ass room. So I got a pair of "Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5vi's" coming in tomorrow for $60 on sale at buy.com. I'll give a review tomorrow.

I haven't personally experienced the UE TripleFI 10/10vi but from what i hear from the price point which it's in ($300+ range), i've seen a bit of mix reviews on the unit. I frequent head-fi.org and those guys are very picky.
If you don't mind, do you mind providing a bit more review on the headset? UE Triple FI 10 is definitely on the top of my list but i don't want to make too much compromises just for the mic capability

Hey Guys. I was using my old iPhone earbuds that came with my old iPhone 3G until they broke. My wife has a HTC Aria and the earbuds that came with them have 3 controls on them plus the mic. Any idea if you can get something with more than just the one control on the wire to work with the Captivate?

So the Ultimate Ears came in today - Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5vi's
Come with two sizes of memory foam earbuds and 4 sizes of silicon.
The port on the Shure's is much smaller allowing you to compress the memory foam a good bit smaller before insertion.
As well at Shure's foam is black and slick coated allowing for easier insertion and wont get earwax colored.
Click to control works just as a pause and play button for music no track skipping.
The mic is still well placed when you use the phones in the over the ear configuration. Landing somewhere mid jaw.
Plugging them into our 3.5 port is very snug almost worrying that you might be making it to loose for other plugs. But at least you wont pull these out by accident.
The mic pick up is very good even in loud environments.
Sound clarity is great I tested them with some Lady Gaga, Simon & Garfunkel, R Kelly, Kesha, and Big Boi. All in flac format, I love that our phones can play flac. Sound were very crisp and tight. Older songs like Simon & Garfunkel sounded better with our 5.1 on but others like Big Boi Shutter Bug are muddled by it.
Bass production is good and more than suffice for my music , but then again that could be the flac helping a lot. I like clean bass its bad if it distorts the other channels. I only expect the bass to get better once they get some more time on them and open up.
Now as for as construction compared to Shure's. Nothing can top Shures they just feel solid. And their customer service is bar none. But if I never have to call Ultimate Ears about these it would be an even better testimony.
The biggest difference sound wise compared to shure 115's is the hi's sound punchier more tuned with the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5vi's not better but different, I think better for classical music would be the best way to describe it. Better for Lady Gaga too with all the crazy sounds in the background coming out more. The choice and ears are yours. Obviously the 115's dont have an inline mic so nothing to mention there.

How's the battery life with Flac? I tried the same buds and hated them b/c of the lack of bass reproduction, even in 320kbps variable.

Wow - finally a post I can offer some real assistance.
I'm a musician, and I have the Shure E2 and the UE Superfi.5 (the originals, which they don't sell anymore) for my wireless monitoring on stage. Both are excellent phones, although I think the quality of the UEs are better and the sound is a bit cleaner through all the frequencies.
My best advice is to replace the foam on either with Comply tips, they are tons more comfortable and mold much better to the ear. You'll notice a difference immediately, but a huge difference after an hour.

Here is my last question. Can i buy UE TripleFi 10 and replace the wire with TripleFi 10vi? i think i've heard that they're compatible but i wasn't exactly sure

Thanks. I play bass and like bass in my rock music. For instance, take the song Airbag from Radiohead's OK Computer. great bass in a non-funky/r&b song. On my old Sony X Walkman this sounded awesome. The bass sounds great on the Captivate using Rock On (cubed) with my Skullcandy Heavy Metals, but there is not enough at the high-end. The 5vi's are awesome on the high-end. Any recommendations for good overall reproduction?

You might be heading to dual driver land aka $200+ phones land.

Is the foam on comply tips slick coated like Shure's are. I knew its brody licking them before compressing and inserting but the Shures just slide right in when you do that.

Moto Hint

Who is planning to get a Moto Hint? I am curious how the experience of having bot ha Moto 360 and the Moto Hint will be. I wonder if the two devices will compete for your words or if they will have a synergy making having both worthwhile. I do a lot of talking on the phone so a nice bluetooth headset really interests me.

the only thing i'm worried about with the hint is that it will really look like you're talking to yourself

Oh dang I actually haven't heard about these but I think they look like they'll be a pretty good product for those who use such devices. I would splurge but I don't think I would actually use it very often...

I was curious and found the Moto Hint last night at Best Buy. It fit great in the ear and was really comfortable. I could hear callers clearly. Issue is that callers could not hear me well. I was told that every few words were clear then there would be a gap of silence while I continued to speak. I tried with the Note 3 and iPhone 5 and both had the same results. I then covered the sensor making the Hint believe it was in my ear and spoke directly into the mic about an inch from my mouth. Callers heard everything I said clearly. It appears that the BT mic is too far from the mouth to pick up speech properly. I had high hopes for the Hint and am disapointed that it didn't operate as advertised. Will give it the benifit of the doubt and swap it out for another one before giving up.

Make sure the two microphones are aligned and pointed toward your mouth and not your eyes. You may have to consciously rotate the back of the unit upwards slightly when you put it in the ear so microphones line up such that they point to your mouth. Found this in user guide and it works great with this slight adjustment in ear.

where do you live? i cant seem to find the moto hint on bestbuys website. Looking at motorola website doesn't seem like they are on sale yet T^T i wanna try this headset out pretty bad lol

I also don't see it on the Best Buy website or Amazon. I found it at the Best Buy in Alexandria, VA. I decided to try another unit since the first was so bad. The Best Buy at the Pentagon City location had five in stock. This one is much better. Tried it last night and the person on the other end of the call could hear and understand everyword I said. Not so good this morning so I will follow gadgetg's instructions. I really like the look and feel of the Hint. Will try it for a few more days before I make the decision to keep it or not. My Plantronics Voyager Edge works great, but definitely not as attractive and discreet as the Hint.

Got the Hint yesterday at my local best buy in Miami and I really want to like it but I'm still on the fence. Calls are nice and loud with no issues with being heard. My issue is with streaming audio and how quiet it is compared to the call volume. I have the call volume at the lowest setting it's so loud but the streaming has to be over 3/4's just to be able to hear it. It also sounds a but tinny but I imagine the tiny speaker is doing its best. I turned off the Moto voice always listening feature since I'm using it with a iphone 6+ and I imagine that will also help a bit with battery life. If anyone has any suggested settings to improve streaming volume or battery life please chime in. I got the best buy 2 year insurance for $20 so I can always trade this one in if they ever come out with a different hardware version later on.

My wife really wants the Gear S when it launches and thought the hint would be the perfect accessory for it. Just worried she will lose it!

Is hint can used for other phone has not motovoice? Any limition will be?

Yes you can. I'm using it with an iPhone 6 plus and it works great. The only limitation is you can't use moto voice. I have to press the mdf to call Siri.

Thanks for info. I read some review say the stream sound like music is low and difficult to hear, how about yours? And any problem when talk, need to adjust you head or just feel free to talk in air?

Call volume is very loud but audio streaming and music volume is much lower for some reason.

I posted this on the Motorola Forums, but those of you with a Hint or thinking of getting one may find it useful
A US friend recently bought me a 2nd gen Moto Hint on his visit to the UK and I've got to say that the microphone
performance is really erratic. I did loads of testing and searching on the internet in case the problems were:
a) Related to the Nexus 5 I was using
b) Related to a faulty unit
c) Related to me not using the correct "gel" or positioning it in my ear correctly.
After a LOT of digging and reading the few reviews out there, I found that in quite a high proportion of the reviews I did eventually find, people mentioned about how others heard them; that people speaking into the Hint came across as quite faint and distant - exactly the problems I was getting.
A bit more digging and testing later, and I managed to eliminate both a) & b) from the equation... using a really crude test
involving a Bluetooth recorder app, I uncovered the following (Hope this helps!):
Option1.
Believe it or not, I can get consistent clear audio recorded - and subsequently call quality where others can hear me
very clearly if I... Take the Hint out of my ear and BLOW HARD into the front mic before quickly putting it back on!! I know it sounds crazy, but every time I do this, the Hint's mic works flawlessly for me (I should add, there is no debris or or anything else blocking the hole to actually be cleared and my ears are clean )
And this trick works whatever the orientation of the Hint in your ear is.. it can be positioned so the mic is level with your eyes, pointing a bit further down towards your mouth, whatever... this to me, completely dispells any previous info about rotational position in your ear being critical to mic's pick up (no consumer device suitable for everyday use should be that sensitive to position IMHO)
FYI, an audio engineer friend of mine thinks the sudden burst of white noise caused by blowing into the mic, might re-set the noise cancelling audio sampling start up processes but without pulling the thing apart and reverse engineering its code, they're at a complete loss to comprehensively explain why this should work..
FYI 2, The same audio engineer friend thinks the noise cancelling algorithms are broken in some way which is the root cause of the mic pick up being so poor out of the box, and could be fixed with a software update. They've got an older Moto Elite Sliver with Mics positioned no closer to the mouth than the Hint and the mic audio quality in comparison is damned good without having to resort to tricks..
Option 2. A bit more fiddly but also do-able, is to hold your hand up around your ear "Secret Service Agent/FBI Agent" style. Don't actually touch the hint, just have a couple of fingers brushing against the top of your ear with your palm and wrist towards your mouth to help channel the audio from your mouth into the Hint's mic. YMMV and in someways, having to do this to get enough audio to the mic kinda defeats the purpose of having such a small Bluetooth earpiece - may as well hold your phone up to your ear instead!
Anyway, I hope my findings help someone who's had problems, might've left it in a drawer etc.

So from the video it's hard to hear which speaker but you can easily hear the change. Basically what's happening is when listening to music or watching a video audio comes through both speakers. However, when you get a notification all audio stops briefly while it switches to just the bottom speaker, and then stops briefly again to switch back to both speakers. Once it switches to the bottom speaker it gets quieter and audio sounds noticably worse. And if you get multiple notifications at just the right intervals it creates a very choppy listening experience. I don't know if this is intentional or not but I find it very annoying and it makes it feel like the speakers were and afterthought. Also, why do speakerphone calls still come out of the bottom speaker? Why does it not do both like music or videos?

If someone created stereo alert sounds, would it maybe be an easy fix for the contrast in volume and mono source? Basically be a less stark a contrast? Same sound through both speakers on top of the music in the background.
Totally different topic, but somewhat related - I was going through online reviews today and I think a CNET video mentioned that someone determined the top speaker is tuned to 10 db less than the bottom. They basically ran left the same sound through the "left" speaker and then right. And by using another phone and a decibel meter app showed the top is quieter. Then they said something like when the engineers were tuning the audio, when both were balanced, there was distortion from the top speaker. But when both were balanced, but low enough that there was no distortion, it was too quiet. So they chose to go lower on top and higher on the bottom to have a better overall volume, without distortion. I wasn't listening so close so didn't catch if that was speculation on why or someone divulged that.
I searched later and couldn't find the original source, so it might be something someone just noticed.

How's the external speaker?

I read LG did something with the phone for the speaker to have a better resonance chamber and it actually makes the external speaker louder, you can actually feel bass and putting it on a table or something would make it louder. I haven't got the chance to test one in a store so I thought I'd ask on here if it was just a gimmick or if it actually works

Yes from my experience it's loud af. And yes you can actually feel the bass when you're playing a song. Putting it on a table makes it even louder.

it's seriously good sound if you put it on an inverted 5 gal bucket, plastic crate or box. you can actually hear bass and mids. blew me away.

For a single bottom facing speaker this thing is Loud and Clear. I don't get distortion like on other devices I have had. Put it on the table and it resonates nicely. Almost don't have to use my Bluetooth speaker.

I have a roll of paper towels by the sink, and I lay the phone over the hole of the tube while I listen to music doing the dishes, and that sounds pretty nice. The speaker is actually annoyingly loud with some music, so I listen to music without using max speaker now.
