E988 Custom ROMs and recovery - LG Optimus G Pro

Hello,
I have an E988. Since this forum mixes all variants of this device, it has not been easy to find information that would match my model.
I am already rooted.
What I am trying to do is to install a recovery on my phone to be able to mod it a bit. however, the only thing I found, Freegee, apparently is bricking the E988. Also, as I understand, the bootloader is locked and there is no way to unlock it as of yet. could I still make backups and restores using CWM or TWRP? I come from a Samsung so all this has never been an issue for me, please bare with me.
All I want is complete freedom to install whatever I would please on my device without worrying about bricking it....
Any help, input or suggestions would be much appreciated.
thanks.
Karim

There's your recovery. Freegee is about to open up and support more devices. The creator has been extremely busy.

A noob's guide to rooting and flashing

Looking into rooting? Maybe try this foreign ROM thing? (Not talking about ethnicities here) Here is the place to be.
First of all, make sure you have a T-Mobile Galaxy S3. (Aka t999 or d2tmo)
If you follow instructions here for any other device, even for galaxy s3's of another carrier you are extremely likely to regret it and end up having to unbrick your device because you installed an incompatible file.
You can take your battery out to make sure it says t999 under if you are not absolutely sure.
Rooting is a similar idea to jail breaking an iPhone. It removes what restrictions there are with android devices. Yes, it is perfectly legal.
Which leads me to my disclaimer:
I take no credit for what's posted here.
The only work here that's mine is the organization. Please donate to the rightful people who spent quality time developing.
Also I am not responsible for any damage done to your device.
It is vital that you follow instructions in every exact detail.
Firstly, rooting.
1. Install drivers for your device onto your PC. To do this, you can install Samsung Kies or there are downloads that will install the drivers solely(recommended link for drivers http://d-h.st/zya)(thanks DocHoliday77). If you get to the point where you can exchange files to phone from the computer and vice-versa then you're set for drivers.
2. Do a backup (using Kies or a program of your choice)
3.Uninstall Kies. Kies doesn't play nicely with the program used to root called Odin. So uninstall Kies so Odin can work unhindered. Your drivers should stay. But make sure you can still copy files between your phone and computer before proceeding.
4.Follow these instructions put together by OfficialPhoneRebel(aka EverythingApplePro):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKwhAVj5Feg Outdated. try CF-Auto-Root
Yes, I used this method and it did work for me.
5.After you are rooted, the first thing you wanna do is either install ROM manager (on play store). Open ROM manager. (Yes, give it superuser rights) and install the latest clockworkmod recovery, or use GooManager to get TWRP recovery, both work, but sometimes one is suggested for the installation of a specific ROM.
6.Now install busybox(also in play store)
7.You're all done!
If you've made it this far, kudos. Now you're gonna wanna get the app called titanium backup and do a full backup of your phone. Also boot into recovery (home+volume up then press power until it vibrates all while holding home+volume up buttons) do a backup through these menus. If your feeling like an over achiever and wanna be super safe then go ahead and back up to both your internal sdcard and your external sdcard. Also it now would be wise to back up your IMEI nv (basically your phone's identity), instructions for that can be found here (thanks to daxecutioner24)
Now you have reached a possible stopping point. Stop here and enjoy root privileges. Continue to read how to install a custom ROM.
Installing a custom ROM(operating system):
GooManager (on play store) is a pretty good directory for ROMs. And is a great place to download them and gapps. Now since not every ROM installs this way it is important to check the main page associated with that page to see if any special instructions are required.
But this is what you generally do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946701
Roms:
Gapps can be found either on the ROM's page or through goo manager make sure the firmware versions match up (like android 4.1 and 4.1 jelly bean gapps)
For a pure android ROM I would suggest CyanogenMod 10.1 (the one I am currently on)
For an inverted stock ROM stuffed with fun features I would suggest DaRTHSTALKER S3
For a full list of roms and descriptions or if your just addicted to flashing, then here's the stockpile of almost every rom made for the galaxy s3 t999
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2088179
Backups are your friend. Especially through recovery mode. They have saved my butt several times when flashing a ROM went wrong.
And yes it is possible to sim unlock (make it so you can use it on any GSM network(such as at&t or US cellular)) your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037390
Problem happened and you can no longer boot correctly? This is actually very common.
If you can boot into recovery:
Boot into recovery (Hold home button and volume up then press power till it vibrates all while holding volume up and home)
Restore backup (easiest method)
If that falls through then install a rom by following the instructions mentioned earlier.
If you can't boot into recovery or if those methods didn't work:
You must odin to stock. Follow the instructions here under using odin. Odin and Driver files are at the top of the post. Firmware files (what you put in PDA) are located here
If this didn't work, you may be out of luck, try again and if you are still stuck browse the forums and possible post something under Q and A if worst comes to worse, make sure to describe the entire situation including error messages you may have received so the problem can be pinpointed.
And finally, everyone be nice seeing as I am welcoming very new people to this thread.
Also if any suggestions to improve this post let me know.

Good job
I like this post, would save those useless threads how do I root even though it's sticky all over. Also it would be really helpful if you include how to back up your IMEI nv maybe link the thread before they start flashing roms. This is probably one of the most important thing as when you start flashing stuff the IMEI might get lost and without that there is no phone. Everything else looks good.

Thank you!! I implemented that into my instructions. The goal of this thread is to be the thread that everyone can direct newbies here and not have a thousand different threads on the same thing. Also this way people can get their answers faster seeing as their questions will be in the same known place not in some obscure oddly-titled thread in the wrong section. Thanks!

I suggest either CF AutoRoot or root66 (see firmware link in my sig) as the best ways too root. Imo.

Yes this works for that all you needed to do is click on the CF-Auto-Root method during the process and that would've been explained to you. I have used CF-Auto-Root atleast twice on two different galaxy s3's running jellybean 4.1.2 and it worked more than flawlessly

kernel is when hardware need something like you bluetooth or need to adjust screen brightness it send a request to kernel bla bla bla.
you can only flash a kernel that is compatible to your rom by rebooting to recovery

The way I understand it is the kernel is the bridge between your input and the devices output. Like the bridge between software and hardware... Sorta.. Ya you don't need to flash one sometimes custom kernels can add features and maybe improve GPS/battery life but I don't use custom kernels much. But that's just me some people are in to that stuff.
And yeah it just depends on the specific ROM for the specific features. I don't know if this is still a think its been a while since I've had some Samsung action but check our hyperdrive they had some good stuff going on when I used em.
Best bet is Google. Everything you could ever want to know about kernels and more! If you want to know about custom ones, read the OP's of the many available ones.

[Q] Rooting N7 2013 with 4.4.2?

I hate being "that guy", but I want to make sure I don't brick a perfectly fine, working Nexus. First, I love the device. Received it for Christmas and it's everything I need in a tablet. I have rooted and flashed roms in the past on other devices. At this point the only reason I want to root is for Greenify and Titanium. I am currently running stock KitKat. I have checked out owenbeals tutorial videos but not sure that method is compatible with KitKat. So..
Question 1: Can I still root the device even though I am on 4.2.2? If so, what is the method I'm needing?
Question 2: I don't need to unlock the bootloader or install custom recovery just to root do I? I haven't had to do that in the past for other devices but I just want to make sure.
Can't wait to freeze and hibernate some apps I have no use for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) Yes. It's a Nexus so it's easily rooted. I rooted after I upgraded to 4.4.2 right out of the box. As far as what method to use, I'm not a huge fan of toolkits, so I did everything manually: fastboot oem unlock to unlock bootloader, fastboot flash a custom recovery (I installed Philz), then flash supersu in said recovery. Super simple.
2) Well, no matter what route you go (manual or toolkit), you have to unlock the bootloader to do all this. Apparently toolkits can do all this for you and even relock the bootloader after. Don't know why anyone would want to relock though.

No problem. Always glad to help. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any toolkits because I've never used any. It's always easier for me, personally, to do everything manually. That way, if something were to go awry, I know exactly what the problem was and can correct it. It's super simple. I did it the same exact way I've done my GNex in the past, and my current Nexus 5. Just make sure you have the correct drivers installed. This is where most people's headaches come from.
These are pretty much the instructions I followed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507905
Just unlock the bootloader, install recovery, and flash supersu in said recovery. Obviously, just substitute the recovery file with the one that's specific to the N7. I went with Philz recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485264).
I am by no means a tech genius, so if I can follow these steps, I believe you can too!

To root or not LG E980

OK so I have been reading a lot on the reasons to root or not to root. My only delima which is holding me back. Once I root should I install custom ROM to the phone? If so I need a little information on how to by pass the bootloader since they have not unlocked it I know freegee is out there but is it the best choice. If you guys have any ideas on this let me know.
Also what apps should I use once rooted to push this phablet to the max.

When in doubt, always root!
I for one strongly prefer plain AOSP styled ROMs. I don't really care for the skins that LG, Samsung, HTC put on their devices... So I always root and install the latest stable CM or a CM based ROM.
I just bought my E980 and immediately rooted it and installed cm11 on it before I started using it, and I'm loving it. I used the unbrick/revert to stock procedure since my phone had the latest firmware 10p. Now I hear that 10p is rootable, but I'm not sure if the bootloader is unlocked.
If you just root it and keep the stock ROM, I'd get Xposed Framework + Gravitybox to add a lot of the features of custom ROMs; also get Greenify, AdAway (not in the market, you'll need to download the apk from F-Droid), and Titanium Backup.
Thanks bro.
Current phone: LG E980
Other phones: IPhone 3gs, Droid max, HTC one, Samsung
All things can be changed, just have to find a way.
Root it..it's a must if you wanna get the most out if your device.
Freegee to install lokified CWM..
Personaly I prefer the stock based Rom.
Most of the time I run the stock AT$T Rom de-bloated with titanium backup.
Remove carrier IQ with the" logging test app". Not a must but I don't like at&t spying on me so I remove that carp..
And I use xposed framework with the gravity box module. It has everything I want in a module.
If CM is your flavor there are several really great builds in XDA.
If you prefer a stock flavor there is a great G2~V5 Rom here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2462453
As far as performance I have experimented with
Faux kernel controller & TricksterMod
Both from the play store.

Current phone: LG E980
Other phones: IPhone 3gs, Droid max, HTC one, Samsung

Root + MadMac's lokified TWRP
I think rooting the OGP is a must, just to remove apps that are problematic and add some xposed modules for security (xprivacy). . . but then again I'm anal that way — hate having a bunch of unused apps hiding on my system and no control over app permissions. Not to mention being able to make full img backups.
Once you root the device, you will need FreeGee installed. Then use FreeGee to install CWM and backup your EFS.
At that point, boot into recovery from FreeGee — very important not to boot into recovery from the device being off as I, and many others, have ended up in recovery boot loops with CWM doing that.
Once in CWM from FreeGee, install madmac's lokified twrp. [here]
madmac's lokified twrp has no problems getting out of recovery from a cold hard boot into recovery.
ROMS
I'm sticking with stock at this point due to google killing text reflow/wrapping in 4.4, and the fact that stock has incredible battery life especially in standby doesn't hurt at all.
However, if you want to jump to 4.4 I recommend BeanStalk ROM for this device. Overall it performed the best for me on my E980. Great ROM and I would have stayed on it if it were not for text reflow not working in my browser of choice — actually don't think any had it other than Opera and it lacks in other areas, thus not worth it for me since 4.4 via LG is coming.
Now, if you are the sort that does stay with stock and doesn't need long term root, it's easy to unroot the device right inside SuperSU. However, I found that I needed to unroot the device twice to remove the two recovery apps I installed — CWM & TWRP — thus I unrooted, then rerooted, and unrooted a second time. I did that as an experiment to see what recovery was left after unrooting, and only the last recovery was removed with unroot.
Thanks a lot @Charles7. Very clarifying instructions. However, there's something I've seen people talking which is the inability to restore ES when needed. Should the EFS be backed up through Freegee or CWM/TWRP bundle? Or Should it be thru madmac's? Just would like to know the right way in case I need.

I did use xposed on my S4 for a few days but ended up trading it for the OGpro. I wouldn't mind using a stock rom with this phone if I could still change dpi and all that.. I have been using beanstalk which was really nice but I had to get a new one through insurance so it came with the 10p update and stuck on stock at the moment.. are there really any major differences with 10p and 10k? I'm not too eager to use that chinese program to root my 10p.. what do you guys think?

FreeGee has an option to backup you EFS from within the app. Of course you can back it up in every way you would like. However, you will want to copy the freegee folder (or whatever backups you do) with that backup in it to your external SD or computer so it doesn't get wiped. The reality is, you most likely won't ever need that backup. It's a worse case scenario.
Just be careful when formatting partitions on the OGP. Only format system, cache, and data/media partitions, and doe the regular wipes and you'll be fine.
Thanks once more @Charles7. We definitely need more devs. But we also need information more clearly. I see lots of people afraid of rooting or not flashing or not. And I think your contributions here are really valuable.

@deadenz that's the partition where your imei is stored.
If I'm not wrong in the Freegee thread you can read that EFS plays an important part on bypassing the bootloader.
Thus, having it backed up can play an important part in case Murphy pays you a visit.

[Q] Custom Recovery for SGH-T999L (T-Mobile LTE)???

Hiya guys, first time poster long time follower here .___.
I know this might or might not be a common "noob" like question
for most of you but I wanted to know if anyone knows where and how
I could get a custom recovery for a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE model?
I previously owned, rooted, and successfully flashed CWM Recovery on the
previous none-LTE Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999)...but while jumping
from one Rom to another I accidentally tried flashing an International
version of a rom and basically hard bricked that one T-T
Two weeks later I got the "second generation" of the S3 with LTE capabilities
you could say. But after successfully rooting it after months of doubt thinking I'd
fudge it up again, I came to a brick wall, CWM, Philz, and other major recovery teams
haven't made a version of their app compatible with this newer model of the S3
Maybe I've been away from the rooting and rom forums too long or I'm
a bit too ignorant, but could anyone tell me if it's possible to get a recovery
for my phone?
Use the same d2tmo recoveries as before.
So will it be alright to use Rom Manager to try and install the d2tmo recovery using the app or must it be done manually using the PC version of ODIN?
Mobile Odin doesn't recognize this device either so no mobile flashing either...
Sent from my SGH-T999L using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I posted the info Chainfire needed to add support for the T999L soon after its release. Since all other T999 stuff works im pretty sure all hed have to do is allow it to use the same flash kernel. Kinda surprised he never added it.
You can try with an app, but it may block the install. If so youll have to flash in odin.
From what I've read on the ratings/posts on his Google Play Apps it appears Chainfire has been laying low lately. I don't know how true this might be or to what extent but I doubt I'll be getting legitimate support for this phone model any time soon.
As for trying to install the d2tmo recovery I'll have to download the package from the site and try using Flashify or another mobile flash app for now since I don't have my laptop on hand.
Thanks for your quick and very helpful replies DocHoliday77!
I'll post if it works for any other who has the same doubts, if not, bricked I guess lol
By the way, is your username a Generator Rex reference?
Sent from my SGH-T999L using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You do have another option. Download the recovery.img file, or extract it from a zip file. Open Terminal Emulator and enter this:
Code:
su
dd if=/path/to/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Thats it! Just be careful you make no mistakes typing or it could brick your device!
Don't know if others ran into this but TWRP won't mount anything for me on the T999l - I ended up needing to resort to using CWM and clockwork works fine.
Youre not the only one. I think i know how to fix it, but i just havent had time. Just stick with what is working for now.
I apologize for the late reply.
I was able to flash the CWM Recovery using ROM Manager and selecting the d2tmo model. Heck, I was even able to install CM 11 (d2lte) thanks to that But that's off the topic.
Thanks for your help DocHoliday77!

Xposed Framework question

So I am trying to figure out among the many threads how to get Xposed Framework on my LG G3. When I first got the phone I realized it was being worked on and now I decided to see what's been going on and realized all the threads. I've rooted my phone using this method, http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-method-lg-devices-t3129197, I have tried the one method of getting TWRP on my phone one of those one click apps and it bricked my phone so now I'm back to stock and rooted. Currently my software info is as follows, Android 5.0.1, Build number LRX21Y, Software version D85021q. Could someone just send me the proper links that won't cause a brick again? Thank you. What happened to the good old days of just installing the Xposed APK on a rooted device?!!
For lollipop we have always needed to flash via recovery.
Use flashify to install twrp

Thanks I'll give it a try. Kitkat was easier with it, that's what I'm saying. I miss when it was as easy as it was to install on kitkat, Thanks again!
Since updating to v21a trying to install exposed just leaves my phone stuck on the splash screen. Uninstalling it with the zip file restores my phone to working order. Has anyone else experienced this and know of a fix?
