Build quality? - Galaxy Ace II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else experienced awful build quality on our phone like cracks in the back cover bezel cracking etc?
Sent from my GT-I8160 using xda premium

Quality is not fine, as for me. Mine ace is white and it is 5 month old. There are black points on the back and scratches on the silver rounding at the front. I should notice that im using it completely careful, without any silicone though. bezels are fine

What did you expect from Samsung ?

im going to say IMEI quality is true
my ancient N73 (5 YO, 01) only has a few scratches even after slipping out of my pocket while doing bike tricks, cartwheeling into a pool and so on
whereas my ace 2 (10 MO, 05) has a dent from falling off my table, yeah, thats all XD

Scrathes on de camera lens!!!

hi every1,
i have had this phone for over a month...but jus today i realised i have scratced my camera lens screen...is it a normal thing????n how to protect it in future...
Thanks to all in advance!!!!
To the op, there are various threads related to this already. Scratches will happen unfortunately. I suggest a screen cover or case if you want extra protection.
Btw, come on you baggies!

Yup, perfectly normal. The camera enclosure was very poorly designed. You'll need to get a case that has a lens protector or make your own I'm afraid. Mines pretty damn scratched already, I've started resting it on the edge of things so that the camera part hangs over the edge and isn't touching anything. Far and away the most irritating thing about this phone!
Get a cover or cover it with some scotch tape
rock is selling screen protector that comes with camera protection
I wonder why don't they just put Gorilla glass on the camera window. All my previous phones always met with this problem however hard I try to protect the camera. Even ones with a camera window cover (e.g. the Nokia N95 8GB from a long time ago), because the cover itself also becomes the source of scratch.
Are the scratches visible in the pics? Cause as long as its not, affecting the quality of the pic I don't care. Also mine had a nasty scratch but its not on the center of the lens

not really.i mean i haven't noticed any change in the quality of the pics...so i think its better to get it protected before it starts messing around the pic quality!!!!

easy screen scratching?

I moved from the iPhone 4 nd had zero screen scratches in the 2years I had it. I already got one on my s3 just wondering if anyone else noticed your screen scratched?

none yet but my screen does make a clicking noise at the top if you tap it
Found super fine scratches after two weeks and went with screen protector. First time in the last 4 phones.
Gorilla glass 2 isn't all its cracked up to be.
Nothing here. I cleaned up the screen for the first time after a month and it's just perfect... probably because i usually leave it in hit case while i don't use it.

I had a iPhone 4s and my screen was scratched and how that happened I had no idea as I am always very careful. I got a galaxy s3 and had no screen scratch however my buddy got his s3 also and has a screen scratch so it depends If it has glass it can get scratched bottom line doesn't matter what phone it is or what type of glass. I would just get a screen protector to be safe like I did.

I have a similar issue, from time to time I feel like the top layer of the phone is detached somehow when it doesn't look like it and oddly enough when I randomly touch the top near the call speaker, you feel that little push to the phone, clicking it back into place
HOX is perfect while SG3 has a scratch
I've had my HTC One X longer then I have had my GS3 and for some reason the GS3 has a small scratch in the screen, while my One X screen is perfect. I thought both of these phones had gorilla 2 on them?

Same thing I've noticed comparing Galaxy Nexus to HTC Sensation and now GS3 with OneX. It seems Samsung puts a oleophobic coating on their phones which helps resist smudges, make them easier to clean. I believe this coating is what you see those fine scratches in. The glass itself is not getting scratched just this coating. I've only seen it on Samsung phones. My Nexus has these fine scratches that can only be seen in direct sunlight and can't be felt or affect the display in anyway. Same thing happened with my GS3 until I swapped it out for some other issue - this replacement GS3 I stuck a screen cover on it so I don't have to be bothered with the fine coating scratches.

YES mine has scratched easily! And I'm fairly careful with my phones and screens. My S1 and S2 were amazing and practically unscratchable but this phone dud come with a DIFFERENT VARIATION OF NEWER GORILLA GLASS. Can't find the article but it is different. My scratches aren't major but definitely there and came within 3 days...as well this phone is easier to crack the glass so be careful. I know one friend who easily cracked his and Rogers has stated they have had several returns already too. So take 'er easy on this phone. I now have screen protector which I never needed in past

For me personally it's bad call. Why get this top of the line phone with excellent screen and then put something on top of it which would make screen duller? This was never an issue with previous Galaxy S phones and Samsung screwed it up somehow with this iteration.

I felt the same way when I had iPhone 4. Too off protection and in a month had very faint scratches. From there on always put on protection. It's like a condom. Yes makes it duller but always worth the protection. Lol

[q] Getting minor scratches out on housing?

So after taking off my case today noticed a minor dent/ scratch on the bottom right housing corner as if its been dropped. I never dropped it so guessing someone else did and didn't tell me but that's another story.
Any ways. Any way to maybe buff out the little dent/scratch on the housing itself. I have a pebble blue gs3 also if that helps.

Try to get some nailpolish the same color as your phone. Just go to a store and see if they have samples of nail polish applied on plastik, then compare the colors to your phone. A cheap one will do fine. Then take a thoothpick and carefully fill up the scratch with the nail polish. Then wait for it to dry, normally noone will see the scratch without looking extremely carefully.
Not sure how helpful this is, but toothpaste can remove scratches from DVDs and CDs, so that might be something to look into.

Is it on both the front and back piece or just one? Not sure how to save the front, but I know the back cover you can find for cheap on eBay. I'm interested how you would fix the front part myself. I haven't dropped mine yet (knock on wood) but I'm usually really bad about that. Lol

I 2nd this. Since owning my S4 i have had it fall from my desk about 4 or 5 times onto a linoleum chair mat. About a 2 and a half foot drop each time. The chair mat should be a lot harder then a rug. Theres not a scratch on the thing and no problems at all. Think the OP got a bad unit that got through final inspection.

Agreed, you should be able to drop an egg or a baby a foot and a half onto carpet with no ill effects. If that hadn't happened your phone probably would have gotten messed up at some point from you looking at it too hard or something.
Digitizer seams like a good thought. The screen has also got a yellowish tint now except in tge corner it was dropped on, which remains more vibrant and sharp.
im gonna try n get tmo to swap it out for me since theres no visual damage except lil silver sliver from bezel gone.. thanks for input, much appreciated.

My fiance has already dropped her S4 like 5-6 times from standing height down to the ground. She even dropped it on a bunch of rocks in our driveway...... :-\
However not only does she not have a single scratch... It works perfect still.
Get softer carpet
Get a case, if you're spending so much money on a phone at least spend a few bucks on a case, even a $5 tpu case from ebay can be the difference between a shattered screen

Scratch help

Just got this phone a couple days ago. Sold but s4. This phone is so much better seriously. However I noticed there's a couple very small scratches right on that shiny bezel next to where you plug it in to change. Is that shiny part aluminum? I'd like to find a way to remove the scratch. Its very small and I'm unable to feel it with my fingernail. I'm just really ocd.

Nope, not the white part. It's the aluminum part. It's where the aluminum attaches to the white plastic part. On the very edge of the bezel there's a couple small scratches. I can feel one with my fingernail.

You have 14 days, return the phone. They will usually replace it as DOA. You'll be fine.. a few stores were willing to replace mine for gaps in the chassis.

Ha.. let me tell you about that gap.. I still have my original phone. I've been to 3 corporate stores and looked at literally 17 new phones and they all had it.. mine was actually smaller than what I saw out there.. the only gapless phone I saw was 1 demo model at one of the corporate stores.
They usually wont fight you for a return on something even as minor as a scratch you can feel. Just make sure you go to a corporate store, not a satellite private owned store.

You don't have to even lie, just tell them you've been waiting for this phone on Verizon for 3 months now and since it's finally here you want a perfect phone. At least that's what I said 3 times at 3 diff stores and all 3 managers approved replacement. And yes, I would have it replaced for that, hopefully they wont blame you though. The gap thing is a more obvious factory defect (if not normal at this point).
Let them be the ones to lie about the DOA if the manager agrees to replace the phone for ya.

I'm going to lie anyway just to make sure they don't deny replacing it. I'm not saying anything about the scratches and they won't notice them. How did you get the phone replaced so many times at different stores? They told me I can only replace it one time and that they'd charge me like $30. I always tell them that I want to check the phone for physical defects before I buy it and they always look at me strange and make me feel like an idiot or something.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 2
I mean I'm going to go in there tomorrow and tell them this thing has restarted itself 4x right when I was in the middle of doing stuff and that I did a factory reset and the same thing is happening. Then when they say ok they will replace it since it's only been like 3 days I'm going to say that the build quality on this phone is perfect(obvious lie) and I want to make sure that the replacement one you're giving me doesn't have any of the known defective gaps or scratches. What do I do if they hand me the replacement one and I notice a scratch or gap? Just say Um no I don't want this one and they bring another out until I'm satisfied?
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 2
and we wonder why we spend so much on cellphone plans...
Really, those scratches are not noticeable for most people. Lets remember these things are made on an assembly line as fast as possible and there is never going to be "the perfect" anything.
The gap I can kind of understand because it could cause water damage if water gets splashed right there, but a very small cosmetic flaw, that's not on the screen, is something I wouldn't even notice.

So I went into the Verizon store and no joke I had him pull out 5 different ones and only one of them had absolutely 0 gap however it had a small chip in the aluminum. Every single one had small scratches in the same area as mine. Mine actually looked better than most of them. The average person wouldn't notice any of this but I do. For now I'm just keeping mine.. That's painted metal, not plastic. None of the body is plastic. Taken from CNET review: "HTC also makes a big deal about the One's all-aluminum chassis, describing it as using a zero-gap unibody design. Indeed, available in black and silver, the handset feels sturdy, with reassuring heft, and its smooth, metallic skin exudes high-end craftsmanship. HTC also took pains to point out that while the thin, white trim encircling the silver model I manhandled appears to be plastic, it is, in fact, metal."
You can also tell this by looking very closely at the edge of the white part and you'll see there's not a seam.

That video only showed the back of the phone being milled. There was only 1 shot of the sides on it, and it totally looks like plastic.
Also, directly from the iFixit teardown:
Our diligent spudgering appears to have permanently mangled the plastic bezel surrounding the aluminum case.
