Just wondering if it would be possible to overclock the Tab 3 devices. These devices seem to good at best but I think overclocking could increase it's functionality. I know the Tab 2 was able to overclock and had a pretty drastic increase in performance!
Well seeing as root has just been achieved a month ago, developers would still need to get a kernel going.

Depends on the device. Most seem to max out at 748,800khz, one guy claimed he hit 820mhz or smth outrageous.
Honestly the best way to establish what your device can handle is to push the OC in WinMo until it's not stable any longer. That should be a good indicator of how far you can push Android.
Honestly I found OCing Android to be way more trouble than it's worth - the phone seemed to lag even more, and it definitely made the device less stable. I'm not a big fan of overclocking my computer either, so I am a little biased.
Cool. Thanks arrrghh. I reprogrammed a USSC TP2 to use with PagePlus for my daughter and put Android on it for her. Just wanted to try and push it to its limits I guess and see what it would do. What class/size/brand card do you suggest I use? Right now it is using a Sandisk class 6 8 gig card, but I've heard some have gotten better performance from class 2 cards.
I'd start at around 600mhz and keep pushing it up 20mhz at a time. The clock driver only takes it in steps of 19.2mhz, but is smart enough to divide it correctly via mod. At 640 or so the bottom started to get noticeably warm, and I've set it at 660 right now.
Each device is different, some take overclocks easily than others.

I've a RHOD100 and have acpuclock.oc_freq_khz=692000 on FRX07 and all is well and does not seem to even get any way warm underneath.
Mind you, while I've set this, is there any way to check within Android as to what speed my TP2 thinks it's actually running at (in case it is ignoring the setting in the setup file) ?
However, it is possible that the speed may work differently with differing builds of the various components but maybe someone more knowledgable on here could confirm whether or not this is the case.

i use the tool "CPU Master Free" to see the actually clock speed (i hope it shows the right values).
At this time its oc at 633,6 Mhz an no problems.

Got my Tilt2 (most recent kernel + rootfs) maxed out at 768.000MHz, and I noticed smoother scrolling and window animations.
But for me, I noticed that the phone actually freezes at times.. even when the phone wasn't overclocked. I believe that's just bugs in the kernel, though, soo not much to do about that from my experience, OC performance relies heavily on the device and kernel version (if that wasn't obvious lol).
EDIT: Ehh, I've read that anywhere from 600-640MHz is the most stable. Currently I'm at 595.2MHz and am noticing an improvement in stability over 768MHz.. Hope this helps.
I have no experience overclocking a mobile device, so I have no knowledge about what is standard/good/bad/safe/unsafe. Basically I want to overclock my Gnex but I don't want to shorten its lifespan. What's a safe amount to overclock to that won't be bad in the long run for my Gnex? (Running Franco M4)

I've personally never found a reason to overclock this phone at all, and that's usually the best for lifetime preservation.
As far as I know recommended maximum speed of CPU is 1,5ghz, so theoretically it is safe to overclock it to this amount. But I don't know if the build of GN for example do not make the CPU heat more what can cause less life time in such speed.

A- Best not to get one. Take the bus...
I'm running francos latest kernel. I just picked the highest OC on the list (1344mhz). I think the non-stable goes higher.

About the "to overclock or not to overclock" discussion, i'm leaning towards not needed YET. The phone still packs a punch when it comes to gaming and such IMO.
OP says he is noob with these things aswell, so it might be wise to wait a little and get some android experience before jumping on the OC train.
That beeing said. Every cpu is different so one cpu can be clocked to 1500mhz while a different one will fail when beeing clocked to 1300. You just have to try different clock speeds and check if it is stable or not. The cpu have built in throtteling when temperature limits are reached.

Curious if overclocking the CPU and GPU is really worth it looking at performance vs battery life. My device seems zippy already, but I'm just wondering if overclocking would improve anything seeing as some other tablets are moving onto 2.0+GHz.

I would not overclock it, if you think it is very fast already. Overclocking from 1.5GHz to 2+GHz is probably mostly used for people trying to get the highest benchmark score.
i used to test roms and over clock the kernels while testing now iam back to basics
as i noticed even with a small overclock the system got hot around camera area on most kernels
that was enough for me to stop oclocking

And this tablet doesn't need overclock. Nor will it handle it. The only thing that would be helpful is voltage control. it gets hot enough as it is.
If you really want a performance boost root it and change the cpu governer to performance. It locks the cpu at 2. 3 ghz. (the tablet will get insanely hot though)

I am not working on a custom kernel. I am working on a new kernel to be the CM kernel but it will still be stock voltages and speeds...
Is it possible on stock rom ? L. In the old days with root priveleges you could overclock android phones .
Phone runs pretty cool and could take some beating...

Overclocking is in the kernel, not the ROM. You'd need a custom kernel, as well as whatever control app that kernel uses.
Be aware that overclocking won't get you any significant performance improvement, and due to the nature of mobile devices (no active cooling) I strongly recommend against it, as your phone cannot effectively dissipate the increased heat. You'll burn up your CPU.
