Hi ,

installing ics rom wifi couldnt find any wireless network .
I tried all jelly bean roms and all are the same .
Can somone help me with this ?
Thanks
Check your radio version. You can find this by looking in the bootloader: turn the phone off, then boot it back up using volume down+power.

Hi Chromium
thanks for your fine desire ROM. I have been using the build 8 since you uploaded it, and it's quite stable (only 1 soft reboot at the very beginning). I am customizing the desire a bit, since I am giving it to my grandmother. 89 and living in the countryside, she will possibly be the oldest users of jelly bean on a desire (she is also one of the oldest users of fluxbox on her desktop, I believe).
Your ROM is smoother than expected (btw I noticed that the size of the background picture has a strong influence on animations lags; why has the good old no-background option been removed?), and runs cooler than any other (I truly mean that the temperature of the desire is lower). But still, I would like to improve the memory footprint since performance for JB on desire is somehow an issue. I was wondering if you had any suggestion about flashing hboot in order to have a better use of the memory, and how much memory should I allocate for system. The point would be to install just a few apps she uses and avoid a2sd.
Also, I was wondering if updating radio may have some benefits for improving reception in a remote area.
hboot 6.93.1002
radio 5.11.05.27
I thank you for your cool work and continued assistance on xda.

Glad you like it and hope your grandmother likes it too Be sure to update to my newer build 9 that i released today.
If you want to maximize the internal memory without a2sd i would choose the 225 /5/ 207 hboot made by jmcclue over here. The size of the system partition in build 9 is around 220mb, so that hboot should be perfect, leaving you with a good 207mb for /data. Just to let you know I havent tested that hboot with my rom yet, but im sure itll work fine.
I would also recommend updating the radio. Its always good to be on the latest to avoid general issues. Just be cautious when doing so as a faulty radio partition (radio brick) is very tough to recover from. You can get it here.

Thanks for the reply. Of course I asked on the release of build9 to do all the wiping/updating procedures together! The link to hboot is particularly helpful since I did not find it. My (grand)-grandmother will appreciate: she is quite ok with technology, just some issue with non-physical keyboards.
I also had a look at you glasspanels, they are definitely interesting. Given that you have some taste with graphics, honestly I do not like your signature bar at the end of your posts: in particular watch out a misspelled "thead" for "thread" in it.
Hi Chromium
sorry to post on this thread but I needed your attention here and do not have the right to write on the developers forum yet. I flashed successfully radio and hboot, fully wiped, then went for an installation of your build9 for desire. Previous builds worked fine, but now the process get aborted during the installation procedure. the "formatting and installing" part is finished, but during "creating symlinks & setting permissions" it stops:
symlink: some symlinks failed
E:Error in /sdcard/chromium.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted
thx

Looks like the new hboot is causing the issue. Try jmcclue's 250 /5/ 182. If that doesnt work either, then just go with stock.

I am quite a minimalistic linux user, spending most of my time on emacs. colored signatures are in general beyond my understanding. however the gif is definitely the bad part of it. The Chromium bar is still acceptable. Of course, having a little man moving on the signature is too much from my point of view. But if that gives you something, I may understand the choice (even if I am not sure about what you actually get).

Uhm. Does not work in either case. I always get the reported error. CM7 and build8 install fine with any hboot. A bit weird. Also, I do not understand
how to use fastboot to flash the ROM (the same way one can flash radio, hboot, boot etc). I mean, if I unzip the rom there is much more than just a .img. I am forced to flash from phone which I do not like.
thx

Then the problem might be a corrupt download. build 8 and build 9 have almost identical system sizes, so if it works on build 8 it should work on build 9. Have you tried redownloading it?
You cant use fastboot to flash a rom packaged as a zip, however you could flash the system image and boot image which are also outputted when i compile the rom. I just dont provide these img's as flashing the zip through recovery is a lot easier for most users and the size of the images are much bigger.

After first failure, I downloaded three times, checked that the size were the same, copied to sdcard, recopied form card to HD and verified that the size was still the same. BTW it worked now, according to the well known principle in computer science: if you try the same failing procedure for a third time, it will not fail.
I will give you feedback if you plan to build other versions.
Thanks for the great job and fast help in any case.

I have been reading this thread with great interest, and then became even more excited when I found out that it was succesfully working on the HeroC. I think I understand most of it, but I am not a dev and I really wanted to check with a seasoned dev wether or not it OK to go ahead and give it a go, or if it obvious that I will totally screw up my phone and I am being and idiot.
I would also be curious to know recommended sizes for the partitions, I am not sure what would be acceptable for system ( I appreciate it depends on the size of the ROM), I can't seem to find the total size for system+cache+data the Hero has.

I am pretty sure Maxisma got this to work at some point, but I think he then pulled it off and stopped recommending it. Hold on, I'm off to search
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755204 is his thread
Thanks, for the link, looks like it works, just the limitation of having to patch the recovery every time you want to flash a new ROM...
I'll have a play, see if I can do it without destroying my Hero
EDIT: Am I misunderstanding something, or does the dev need to change the boot.img for this to work?

you need matching boot.img AND recovery iirc...
Interesting, just been reading up on the htc desire rooting/flashing process for a friend, it has a very similar process for switching partitions. I think they've actually gone the whole hog and got a recovery which can switch between 4 different layouts.
It seems to me that with a2sd+ working pretty much seamlessly and thus being in common use these days (for anyone using a custom rom) that having extra internal data space is almost redundant.
Is there likely to be a need to expand the system partition from its default? Just wondering if any of the later sense and/or ICS roms are getting fat enough to need extra space...
edit: doh! replied in the wrong thread, sorry for the inadvertent resurrection!
Hello,
Why posting a subject that is probably already posted?
I know that this subject has been dealt with many times before, but I read a lot in the forum and I still don't know really how to make the upgrad.
Causes :
- I'm frensh so it's more difficult to me to understand and there is no such good websites in frensh langage unfortunatly.
- Also, I am a NEWBIE, so when I read HGY or FGTR, BGT, PMOO... I don't get it at all. The tutorials are full of these words-sentence, abreviations. When it's one or two i can make it, but when all the tutos are full of it, it's become hard.
- An other point is that I don't have internet connexion in my phone. I could connect it with some Wifi but difficultly. I don't know if it's really important by the way, but in many tutos, they said to take things from the google store. Can I just download all the things I need in my computer?
Now the Question :
How to move on a better version of Android?
I don't want to have the latest versions, I just want a GingerBread 2.3 version with a stable rom.
Caracteristics :
Android version : 2.2
Kernel version: 2.6.32.15
Build number: 2.22.75.3
Software number: 2.22.75.3
I bought my HTC Desire 1 year ago from a friend, I think that it's rooted because when I turn it on, I have these screens: Joker - Why So Serious? (S-OFF AlphaRev)=> Orange => My desk finally
Thank you very much for your help!
Yeah I think you're rooted too but we gotta see if you have a recovery installed or not to do that just turn off your phone then hold vol down + power button and then the bootloader will come. In there your phone well only work with vol up/down button and the power button so with them navigate through the menu and find "recovery" and press the pretty button to activate it. Wait for the recovery page to come if there is a recovery installed you will see it then and if not, there will be a picture trying to address the fact that there's no recovery installed on your device. If there's a recovery regardless of it version, just navigate through the android development section and download one (the how is written there but most of them work like this: download the ROM .zip file> put it in the sd card> go to recovery mode> find the option which address wiping or formatting the system partition, the bootanimation and the cache partition and format them> then find the wipe dalvik cache option and wipe it> now find the option which address installing zip from sd card> explore your sd card and select the .zip file and flash it then reboot and you're good to go)
By the way you must (in the same way).flash the latest radio first (before flashing the ROM I forgot that cuz you just have to do it once till its updated again which will never be cuz desire is outdated device for HTC)
Hope I could help, any question feel free to ask, I will respond add soon as I see it.

By installing a rom for exemple like MildWild based on Oxygen 2.3.2 directly on my phone with my Froyo and my kernel unupgraded. Will I upgrade my android and kernel and every thing related?
Or should i upgrade each thnig alone?

No, greatly advanced users flash kernels separately themselves too but there's a kernel in each and every ROM you flash to your phone, btw you have a recovery installed or not?

I have done what you told me and I found the recovery.
So I must now begin by flashing the radio and after I can install the rom?
To keep my contacts and my messages, settings... Should I do something precisely or it's saved?
Do you have any other things you would like to change besides your android version? Like the small internal memory for instance? Also what kind of android would you like? Something purest as possible, one with HTC Sense, or MIUI(look at screenshots in development section)?

Contacts are automatically saved if you saved them on your google account. And for saving messages I recommend SMS Backup + from the market.

I was really scared the first time I got my phone, I didn't want to crush it with these upgrades, and I waited for official upgrades. But now when I'm sure it will never happen, I want to change it myself.
Firstly, I want to move to a better version of android, because I think that it's the same way we change a Windows XP to a Windows Seven. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Otherwise, I don't know what's the better for my phone. But I just want it to be fast and pretty, with the minimum of bugs possible. And I'm ok to change my HTC Sence. I can have an upgrade version of Sense after (3.0 or 4.0) if there is no big problems and if it's also fast. But now a pure android version or a MIUI is ok.
Is there different procedures for every one of these roms?
I didn't understand what the point in having a small internal memory :s
What I meant by the small internal memory is that, by default you have like 140MB for applications. But this can be increased easily to around 280MB. I would be happy to guide you through the process. Also if you want a more pure android, I would recommend Cyanongemod 7.2(latest release candidate, I can help you with this too). I found this ROM to be very customizable, and rock solid. It's also faster then a Sense ROM. Though you might find that things will look a little different, then they do in Sense.

No not really. I mean yes you could if you really need the extra space, but it will lower performance. I say you should cross one bridge at a time.
Ok then first of all save all your data, then go into recovery and do a backup! This is very important because if something goes wrong, you can get everything back the way it was.
Next go to this site: http://alpharev.nl/ read it carefully before starting with it. If you got any questions then ask. It is very important that before you do something you understand what are you doing and why.
In the meantime dowload the following:

I'am aware of the dangers. Thanks!
I will save my data and do the backup.
I have downloaded the files you gave me.
What's next?
Well first you make a backup in recovery. After that copy PB99IMG_cm7r2.zip to your the root of your sdcard and rename it to PB99IMG.zip. Copy the other files as well. Then start the phone in hboot mode(power + back). You should see some installation being done.
After this enter to recovery. Select wipe data/factory reset(or the name is very similar. Then go to advanced->wipe dalvik cache(some recoveries have it in a different location). Now your phone should be clean of everything. It's time to install the new ROM.
Select install zip from sdcard, and go to the location you put the zip file to(it's named something like update-...). Wait for it to install, then do the same with the gapps zip.
After your done, you can reboot your phone. The first boot might take longer(in some cases even 15-20 mins, though this never happened to me). And there you go, you should have gingerbread. Let me know how it went.(If there are any problems don't panic, it's most likely fixable)
best for you is that someone else made all ..

You're lucky ass...
i'm french, live in Paris...ans use HTC desire ( 2 yrs old)...
i'm currently on ultimate Gingerbread 2.3.7 MIUI ROM namely 2.3.30 with the a2sd+ feature. (MIUI_XJ_A2SD_2.3.30_2.3.7Final_Notsigned.zip )
In addition, i use ManU 2.1 kernel plus a specific partition table from CM7_Hboot_MIUI_Mod.zip
no further development on this rom, but still one of the best.
If you're stuck, PM me !!!
BTW, I speak french too...LOL
Issue to resolve: Phone not booting into ROM, stuck at 'htc' screen. Second issue is with Google Play, says "No connection".
Any help on this is highly appreciated!
Short story:
Hello everyone.
After I got my Samsung S3 I decided to play around with my old HTC Desire a little bit. My aim was to install a ROM that would be as plain as possible, visually, so I can play around with it (which I hoped would also maximize battery life) and make it n00b friendly. CronMod seemed the way to go, what with his tweaks and the INT2EXT script etc to maximize app space. Plus didnt want to go to ICS cuz of camera issues.
However, I've been struggling with it. My phone rarely boots up after a shutdown, it just stays at the opening HTC screen and nothing happens. When it does load up into the ROM, on the rare occasion, it'll Reboot fine as many times as I ask. Its just after a shutdown that it doesnt work. Since I want to give this phone to my mom, she, not being very tech savvy, wont have the patience for this. So I need a permanent fix.
The second issue I'm having is with Google Play. It works fine for a little bit but for no reason will stop working. This happened the first time I installed the ROM, then I re-installed and it again having the same issue. I tried "Clear Data" and phone reboot but still no respite.
Phone Details:
CM7r2
6.93.1002
GSM HTC Desire
4EXT recovery.
16GB class10 card: sdcard0 ~13GB, 1.5GB EXT4, 256MB Swap. (also, if someone can explain what Swap is would also help)
Apps2SD script used: Cron's INT2EXT - seemed pretty good.
S-OFF'd and all of course - Revolutionary.io used.
I did try MIUI-Au before this, which was pretty decent, and I may just give up and move on to that if no one has a solution.
Did you changed hboot? i had the same problem when i installed miui on oxygen r2, which wasnt compatible. If you didnt change hboot i think it's the rom, i suggest you flash another one. And about swap..well the point is you dont need a swap partition. It's like another part of ram, when the ram is full the system uses the swap to free it(or something similar, i'm not good on explaining so sry if you dont understand but it's similar).

I changed the HBOOT before I flashed the ROM on. The CM7r2 HBOOT is meant to be compatible with the ROM.
Thanks for the info on Swap, it does make it a lot clearer.
I'll probably wait a bit longer to get some more replies, and if I cant fix the issues then I suppose there's no option but to move to to a new ROM. [I really hope the Devs get the camera issue sorted with ICS roms then I'll jump ship "in a flash". ]
You have given hboot version as 0.93.XXX. A cm7r2 hboot ver should be 6.93.XXX.

Yes, that's correct. It is 6.93.1002.
If it is just stopping at the HTC screen then I am inclined to think it may not be a ROM issue. At this stage you are still in bootloader. Will it even refuse to go to recovery when it starts acting up or for that matter is even fastboot available? If it neither goes to recovery nor can you access fastboot then that means it is hung in bootloader.
But the bootloader should be OK since a corrupt bootloader means brick. You cant boot sometimes like you seem to.
The other reason for bootloader hanging would be I guess overheating or some other hardware fault. Does the device boot up fine after you let it cool down well?

I can get into Recovery fine every time - VolumeDown + Power -> Fastboot -> Recovery.
I cant seem to get into the ROM anymore. It does warm up pretty quickly if I leave trying to boot up but I figured that was because of the screen drawing more power due to constant white screen. What I did find earlier in the day was that if I held down VolDown+Power+Trackball (is that hard reset..?) at that HTC screen it would sometimes restart the phone and then it would load up to the ROM - but its hit and miss. Like right now it just wont work.

Maybe your Desire's partitions are somehow corrupted. Use 4ext to check partition, or do a full wipe, including sdfat32.
I would wipe davlik cache and perform a system wipe/factory reset from recovery then install CM7 as this is pretty plain and can be easily customised. Also you can install S2E from the play store to manage your A2SD with no separate script needed. Hopefully you don't have anything on the phone you need to back up. With any luck this might fix your play store issue too.

@panpjp: I did al that but it still didnt work, unfortunately.
@hans: I've given up on CronMod now. I just went with Marange MIUI. Its working fine so far but the data2ext script doesnt seem to be as smart as the INT2EXT I had installed with the CronMod. At least its working ok. The other issue with it is the Video Recorder - it's very jerky, so the videos do have a lot of stutter, as I had suspected/speculated. Oh well, hopefully an update will fix that.

I have come across this issue once with 1 out of the 4 desires I have personally installed my rom on. Change the kernel to cronmodkernel 1.2 or a kernel of your choice and it will boot and shutdown. I am working hard to find the cause of the issue

I hate to ask this question, since I'm sure you're busy fixing bigger issues, but what exactly is a kernel? I know the ROM is like an OS on a PC but then what is the kernel? How would I install it (is it just the same ol' Recovery --> Install from sd but without any wiping?) and why would it fix the issue with my phone?
Thanks.

The kernel is what runs the OS it is a Linux kernel patched for the arm architecture it contains the drivers as well as it is responsible for booting the phone and also is the layer between the hardware and software.
For a more in depth explaination PM me

To put it simply, it's just a bunch of codes that makes the link between the hardware part and software part.So without it the software part doesnt know how to use the hardware part. And yes you can flash it from recovery and since it's a part of the rom, maybe the rom's kernel it's deffective or something, it's worth to try.
Hi guys.
Obviously I am new, and noob so this might sound silly, but is it worth rooting?
I mean, I have been having stock Desire Z for, I dunno, almost 2 years, and it's been working perfectly, but since HTC and Google are moving on, leaving me on 2.3 and without any new updates, I was thinking of moving on on my own.
The thing is, I am as noob at rooting as I am in here, and bricking scares the **** out of me. Also, I don't know what ROM to chose, if that is the only thing to chose after rooting. I've stumbled upon cyanogen mod, and there are quite detailed step-by-step description on how to downgrade/root/install CM7, but CM7 looks like crap - I don't like it really.
I do like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546915http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546915 thou,, but since it's still beta, I don't want to end up with half working phone when I need it the most.
So, should I go for it, or stick with my guns?
and thx for replying or even reading :good:
I can't really comment on Sense roms (never cared for them, too bloated in my opinion). But I would prefer either Mimicry 1.3.1 or EliteMod ICS (which I'm using now), in regards to ICS (4.0.*).
Far as guides. Some like the Cyanogenmod one can be 'easier' to read, but the XDA wiki has a lot more information.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
Since you're on gingerbread now you would go the Desire-Z Gingerbread route for unlocking/exploit before proceeding to root it. (but on the plus side sticking with a Desire-Z hboot will ensure your /system size is big enough to play with the Sense roms).
With ICS some things to keep in mind is that the most common issues tend to be :
1) Camera isn't "fully" working, in some cases like on mimicry and elitemod (or other non-Sense ICS roms), you can take a picture, you can record a video, but usually only with the stock camera app and usually won't have features like 720p recording or special effects.
2) Graphical glitch with the text can happen on an app, although rarely occurs, is easily fixed by closing the app or restarting (tends to stay with one app when it happens).
Those are probably the two most common issue you'll see with just bout every ICS rom out there for DZ/G2.
By the way some of the Sense roms are incorporating the 3.0 kernel from the Virtuous Infinity Preview (Full Sense 4.0), as such they're getting a decent camera with filters, but course there are still some bugs. (Previously Sense 4.0 roms had no camera functionality at all).
Edit
To clarify, even if you use the CM Wiki to unlock/root you do not have to install Cyanogenmod 7.2 afterwards, you can pretty much install any compatible rom once you've gotten it unlocked and running with a custom recovery (though I prefer 4EXT over clockworkmod).
I am sure it is worth ... i was just like u ..satisfied with my GB but i was so curious and so on so i followed this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting and now iam rooted at the moment iam running Elite ROM ice cream sandwich and its ********* fast .... when you have root and you try new rom you will never want to stop of course there are some risks but I think that if you will have any kind of problem here on XDA is so many great people willing to help you ... my advice is to do it go step by step according to that guide and if you dont understand something just ask here on xda Best of luck....
back in the g1 days a friend of mine rooted his, i was astonished what could be done to phones now adays. i quickly rooted my g1 and began learning a ton about everything mobile, just like many before and after me i was hooked. even if you never found a better rom than stock the learning process is well worth it. even if you dont use most of the new features available to you at least having them is worth it. and unless you dont research/read first, or are mostly stupid/have bad luck, you wont brick your phone. i have rooted 50~60 phones and tablets, maybe more and never had a hard brick, sure when i first started out there was some close calls but with a little common sense you will be fine, also know you are now part a large community eager to help
so follow the xda or cyanogen wiki and downgrade and root your phone, move on to the rom compilation (found in the developers thread here) try a few roms and see what you prefer. you will be happy you did
on and one last point; the best reason to root your phone right when you get it, if there ever is a problem it is much easier to fix a rooted phone with software/firmware problems then an unrooted one. the only drawback could be if you need to send it back for warranty... but how likely is that, and the phone you have now im sure has little/no warranty left
happy flashing!
follow kbeeize's advice on how to root and try a few roms out
PS: One of the major advantages of having a custom recovery, is the ability to perform a backup of your currently installed rom. If you screw something up, you need only go back into recovery Wipe (factory-reset/cache/etc) and restore the backup to get right back to where you were. And you can have several backups too if you were trying out several different roms.
So basically the process of rooting/unlocking offers a safety net once you're up and running, be it in the recovery , or apps like Titanium Backup. Getting there is mainly the intimidating part.

The T-Mobile G2 hboot (0.76.200) has a /system of ~400MB, /cache of ~200MB and /data of ~1.3GB, but 400MB is not big enough for a Sense rom. So if you were following the cyanogenmod wiki for exploiting/rooting, you would need the Desire-Z Engineering hboot (0.84.2000) which has a /system of ~550MB, /cache ~300MB, /data 1GB. Otherwise you would have to avoid Sense roms or roms that say you need a DesireZ hboot.
Since you said you had a Desire-Z you may not even run across that issue.

Depends on how you root, and if your phone needs to be downgraded/exploited. Which most of the time it does (i.e.: to get ENG S-OFF), which will of course erase the existing data on the phone so backups is suggested.

That's where root tools like Titanium Backup come in very handy. You can flash a band new rom, open up Titanium Backup, and then restore all your apps along with their settings/etc.

Normally once you get an initial rom setup, you can do a backup in recovery. If things go bust, you just reboot into recovery, wipe/factory-reset and then restore from the backup which will put the phone at the exact same state as you backed it up.
But yea I guess it's kind of like taking a Ghost image of your hard drive, which is stored on the SD Card at /clockworkmod/backup
Dear StipeP,
Greetings!
I bought my Desire Z, my very first android mobile in April 2010 and since then I was thinking 'O my God! what the **** people are talking about rooting their mobile!!!'. It was not that I was not curious, it was the difficult looking procedure and always lingering fear of bricking my set . At that time, I was a toooooootal noob . Then HTC pushed gingerbread update. All was well before ICE rolled out and some other mobiles were getting it while desire z was no where in line. I decided I should give it a try but still I preferred some 'one click root' methods over the detailed one given at XDA (it seemed too intimidating). But every such method could not root a desire z on android 2.3.3 (they could have when I was on Froyo). Then I finally made my mind to take the bull by horn and started reading as much as possible about rooting the hard way. Finally, I went for the XDA-wiki and also stumbled upon a guy named Strawmetal's wonderful effort of putting all the necessary files and instructions at one place. One night, I sat after dinner just rooted it (though I remembered all possible Gods at some steps like matching the MD5 sums:fingers-crossed. I was so excited that I didn't sleep the whole night!
Now, question was which ROM to install ( I hated to be back on Froyo). I started fiddling with some gingerbread ROMs and then shifted to ICS ROMs. There are problems as mentioned by others. I would mention below some pros and cons (those matter to me) of these ROMs:
1. Gingerbread ROMs are generally quite stable. Some excellent examples are Virtuous Glite v2.01, EliteMod120316 (this is awesome!) etc. I found BeatMod Bliss Sense hybrid to be too heavy (it's a Sense 3.5 ROM).
2. Camera works fine with Gingerbread ROMs generally (It was good in EliteMod120316).
3. ICS ROMs are faster. Even browser there seems faster to.They give a lot of customization options (Rightnow, I'm on EliteMod 120728 and believe me, it would just enthrall you with its beauty and customization options).
4. For me, ability to read Hindi fonts is a bonus and ICS ROMs do this.
5. Regarding Camera on ICS ROMs, it is true that they are not good. But the Camera on EliteMod 120728 is working well. Only you cannot record 720p video:crying.
6. I'm yet to try some other good ROMs like CM9 unofficial so cannot say much about them.
7. One issue that I faced was that I could download from Play Store when using a gingerbread ROM but could not when using ICS ROMs. It was giving "error 403". Finally, resolved that today (of course, with help from others).
One thing that I should mention here is that after rooting and trying some ROMs, I felt frustrated and thought is there any way to go back to stock gingerbread rom without loosing root. Main issues was Camera (I use it a lot). But more I read and kept finding/trying new ROMs, more the desire to revert to gingerbread subsided. Finally, when I got EliteMod 120316, I was more than content. And now am using EliteMod 120728 (an ICS ROM).
Last but not least, I believe that the biggest advantage of rooting my desire z is not ability to run custom ROMs but the learning process and getting an opportunity to mingle with extra-ordinarily helpful XDA-guys.
Now, you have to take a decision about taking the plunge
Best of luck

p.s.: take your time and better take notes of steps. It would help in bringing clarity. And make sure to copy your commands and outputs from ADB to a notepad. It would be of help if, God forbid, anything goes wrong. If you have already downloaded and setup the ADB, just try the msm_rotator command (adb shell cat /dev/msm_rotator). If you get following output, you are ready to go: /dev/msm_rotator: invalid length
Hi,
Another Android rooting NOOB, but experienced with Linux, including embedded (that's the day job )
Looking to root my HTC Desire Z, as is being discussed here.
From all the threads, it seems you have to downgrade to a very old stock ROM before starting. Several talk about being able to take a backup from Clockwork Recovery after you've rooted the phone in case things go wrong, but obviously by then the existing phone build will be gone.
What I'd really like to be able to do is to take a full backup of the stock Gingerbread setup I've currently got, so that if either (a) things go wrong or (b) I don't like the end result I can get back to where I am now.
None of the threads I've found so far (here, here, here and possibly others, I've been surfing around a lot the last couple of days!) talk about any way of doing this, some talk about using Titanium Backup or MyBackup Root to backup Apps, Call Data, SMS logs etc, but these presumably aren't a full OS backup.
Is there a relatively easy way of doing this from the fre3vo temporary root? Presumably 'dd' against the various /dev/block/mmcXXXX partitions will get most (all?) of the data? Are there sections that aren't available from Android device files as root?
One more (hopefully minor) thing - having worked down the start of this downgrade thread[URL], for now I've skipped the "Changing Version Number to Allow Downgrade and Gaining SuperCID with a Goldcard" section and tried the "Temp-Rooting to Backup" section (from my understanding of these two sections, I don't think anything from the section I skipped is relied upon in the backup section). I seem to find that the /system/bin/su file keeps getting corrupted or deleted. Is this HTC trying to stop me doing this, or is it one of the applications (SuperUser?) trying to protect the file and getting it wrong? In case it's making a difference, I also have Better Terminal Emulator Pro installed, which I'm using the "bash" from for some of the steps, as it has proper Linux auto-complete etc. which makes life easier.
I think I've managed to make a usable backup with MyBackup Root, but obviously can't easily test this without going further.
I'd really like to be as sure as possible that I can get back to where I am now before I start the downgrade to Froyo process...
Thanks in advance for any advice on this
Michael
I am worhtless.
Right now I am downgrading GB folowing CGmod guide wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Firmware_Downgrade_(Gingerbread), and I am stuch at step 6. On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:
Erm, what terminal????
btw, I extracted and copied the downloaded files into ADB install folder. That is the right one?
what terminal ? .... u just click start run and type in "cmd" ,,, or find command promt
says: adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I am sorry to bother you, but I would be very grateful
so you downloaded adb from the sdk package right? you need to either change directories in cmd or change the path in enviromental variables
easiest thing to do would be hold shift and right click in the folder adb and files are in and choose open command here. then the path is chosen
also make sure debugging is turned on (in phone)

ok, you may need to open sdk and download adb from there, otherwise you can check if you did without knowing it. go to your harddrive (C) and see if there is an android folder or android sdk or something like that, look for I think platform tools in there and see if there is a program called adb
if you can't find this try search in computer
or just open the sdk manager and download the tools in the first chunk, specifically platform tools

CyanogenMod 11 KitKat for Optimus S/V
This is a basic CyanogenMod 11 rom for the Optimus S/V. It has NOT been tested extensively and I take NO responsibility for any bricked phones, data loss or damages that occur as a result of flashing any version of this rom. It requires ClockWorkMod 6.0.4.5 or later, or TWRP 2.6.3 or later, in order to flash.
What works:
Phone calling (ZVH and ZVJ radios require a patch)
Wifi
Mobile data (thanks to thekraven)
USB tethering
Camera
USB mass storage, MTP
What's broken:
Bluetooth
Wifi tethering
SELinux
You tell me
CWM 6.0.4.6 can be found in the rom directory. Flash Skinny_4.4_Gapps.zip after flashing the rom to get Play Store and Google Sync. Other Gapps will probably be too big to fit on /system.

CM11 KitKat os2sd Version:
cm-11-20140116-thunderc-skinbark-sd.zip is a version of CM11 which is designed to run off your sd card.
To use this version:
1) create and format 3 ext4 partitions following the fat32 partition on your sd card (use gparted not a windows partitioning tool)
/data - at least 256 mb (512 mb or more recommended)
/system - at least 256 mb
/cache - at least 256 mb
2) format /boot in cwm
3) install cm-11-20140104-thunderc-sd.zip
4) install Skinny_4.4_Gapps-sd.zip and reboot
Known Issues (in addition to those in post #1):
formatting/backup/restore issues
possible reduced performance (older/slower sd cards)
reduced battery life (?)
Add wipe zips to a folder on your sd card and flash them from recovery to clear external /data, /system, /cache, or all three.
CWM_6.0.4.6-thunderc-sd.zip is a special version of CWM for os2sd that should only be used if you understand how it works. This version of CWM is not necessary to flash the os2sd rom. See this post for more info about recovery issues with this rom.
A Class 10 microSD card is recommended for best performance.
Power off or reboot to recovery before removing sd card.

Warning: This is a highly experimental setup and a work-in-progress. You should have adb installed and know how to use it, along with the flash_image command, before attempting this install. If you have trouble installing this and are unsure how to resolve the problem ask for help on this thread. I take no responsibility for bricked devices, data loss or any other damages resulting from the use of this software. USE AT YOUR RISK.
New build with rild fix for ZVD/ZV5. You'll want to upgrade to this for stability and battery life even if you're not activated.

I'll test. I still use this phone a bit. I don't use gapps anymore so I wouldn't be ale to ile any bugs against them. Is thereanything in particular you want tested?

Well the biggie right now is getting data going which is sort of difficult for me since my phone's not activated (next week I hope). I'm assuming you're not activated? I guess just general stability and performance, battery life, see what you can run on on it, put it through the wringer. All info is welcome since I really haven't had much feedback yet. It seems to be pretty stable. Let me know if you have any problems, thanks.
really works well...nice job. No chance to test 3g data yet, but everything else works very well...I had to install a keyboard manually, and the battery stats are wrong (fully charged, and stayed fully charged all day) but it is def a daily driver for me.
I uploaded a new 'OS2SD' rom with special recovery, gapps and virgin fix:

After a crash fest with the build at the time of my last post, this newish one is alright so far. Things get choppy fast and the input is a real pain. That is about as good as I have it. Alternate market works, wifi is good, and its chugging along.

long press home and press the three-bar onscreen button to close running apps.
also fast reboot off market is very handy to manually clear ram. heard about that one from andyopie150, like it.
Ya the main issue is just generally its a bit slow. I'm not trying to be one of those people who dog the ROM cause devs sibt human but this is just what I have experienced. I know our SOC came out when Moses was around so I'm not expecting miracles. I'm not sure if you guys have more planned or not but its really neat how efficient the phone is on 4.4 and if it was to get faster it'd be amazing.
The keyboard, can you guys adjust the size values? Its microscopic! Hacker's Keyboard fits the bill in the meantime.

For now I can just suggest the usual speed-up stuff - turn off animations, ksm, cpu/governor etc. There may be some build.prop tweaks you could use, and I'm expectiing zram support to be enabled soon. Crossbreeder might be something else to try. If we could get ART going it might help some but I don't know if that's likely. I probably won't try to tweak the stock keyboard, there's plenty of alternatives available.
tried flashing this on my optimus V and i got a error when i was flashing it, error 7 i think it was, i used the CWM you wanted us to use but it made it so that i couldnt boot into recovery.

Any information is a good thing, positive or negative. Harmonia with the Xionia kernel fairly flies speed-wise, but everything since that seems to choke my phone somewhat. And Mirage is the best Gingerbread available... but I enjoy the extra features more than the speed, which is what keeps me trying for the bleeding edge.
(example: the double-tap-hold-and-slide to zoom is built in all over 4.4, in 4.2 I only saw that in Maps.)
ART may or may not happen. I have to learn more thumb assembly to fix it. My decent class for school this session (the easy one since I did 8088 back in 1991) is x86 assembly. Doesn't apply, but maybe I can get more parallell info from it. There's lots of good info out on the net with minimal searching as well, but not much if any on downconversion of thumb2 to thumb1 code. I found enough to fix a few files but there's still more to go. I'd be impressed with myself if I got that to run.
CrossBreeder seems to work.
