[Q] Samsung Galaxy S III can only detect Edge connection - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I have a Samsung Galaxy S III. It is not picking up 3G or LTE signals.
It is stuck with Edge network all the time. I am a T-mobile user in US.
I checkout the T-Mobile coverage in my area and it has 3G, LTE coverage.
Can anyone provide me any information on this please?

Why Samsung Galaxy S III always stuck with the Edge network
After bit of research I have found the solution to the problem.
The information about this is very hard to find. So I have compiled useful information into this post. I am sorry guys I have given basic instructions only and I guess you are comfortable with these terms. And it is very late and I am writing this so that other can save time doing researching this stuff.
First of all the issues is to do with the carrier and the handset's operational frequency.
Use following links to get more information about T-Mobile frequency ranges ( I can't post any links in the reply :crying)
Checkout T-Mobile site for frequency ranges.
My phone spec is as follows;
Model: GT - I9305
Android Version: 4.1.2
Kernel Version: 3.0.31-1153417
For Samsung Galaxy S III;
To get what frequency the phone is currently using type the service code; *#0011#
My Samsung Galaxy S III uses; PCS 1900
This means my phone currently uses UMTS 1900 frequency range.
Now the cool part is you can access your Samsung phone's hidden frequency settings by service code; *#1973286403#
But the result screen is different in each Samsung model.
My screen shows following. It is not the same for all Samsung models. So you have to play around a bit with those menus.
[1]UMTS
[2]CDMA
[3]LTE
[4]SIM
[run EFS SYNC()]
Go to UMTS > DEBUG SCREEN > PHONE CONTROL > NETWORK CONTROL > BAND SELECTION
Under that section by default the value "Automatic(*)" has to be selected.
If you need to check what WCDMA frequency band phone is using navigate to
UMTS > DEBUG SCREEN > PHONE CONTROL > NETWORK CONTROL > BAND SELECTION > WCDMA Band Preference
Under that section you can select what frequency to use if you know your carrier frequency.
But in my case the phone supports 850 MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHZ, 1900MHz, and IMT 2000 (which I think 3G)
Unfortunately T-mobile uses 1700MHz and 2100MHz band for their 4G HSPA+ network which will not fall into my phone's supported frequencies.
So this is the reason behind your phone not picking up the 3G or 4G signals (in T-Mobile’s case 3G will show up as 4G).
To resolve this you can install a custom rom with modified antenna frequency. But I would warn about that because that could seriously damage you antenna and drain battery etc..
I have some more information on this but I will keep them post as I get time.
Please note I am software developer myself not a network engineer. So I would appreciate if anyone with enough experience to add more comments on the network aspect of this issue.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply by the way. No my IMEI is not zeroed out.

Ok, well first, if you have the I9300/I9305, you are in the wrong forum. This is for the SGH-T999 only.
And second. I'm not sure what you mean by installing a rom with modified frequencies. A rom does not determine this, the modem does. And no rom should ever include a modem.
But you are correct on why you cannot get 4g. And fyi, the international model and the US models are very different devices. Do not flash anything from this forum, only the international forum or you will hard brick the phone.

I am really sorry for posting stuff in the wrong forum.
One thing to clarify you can install a customized ROM doesn't solve the issue completely. I agree with you. But ROM can have firmware patch of some sort that will enable the modem to be tweaked. Or you can install something which changes your antenna settings so that it can receive required signal. To address this issue I am looking in to firmware API a bit, I haven't tried this before. If I can write some code to teak I will keep it posted..
Thanks

[Q] Stupid Question abot GNEX from Korea

Im Active duty military so i end up where every they send me. I had to purchase a local phone since i will be in korea for the next year. I chose the Samsung Galaxy Nexus as my phone. i wanted to know if i can still root this phone and flash a custom rom with out messing up the phone.
The model Number is SHW-M420K.
Its running ISC 4.0.1.
The boot loader says the Board name: tuna Rev 9.
The base band is: M420KRKK7.
Kernel Version is: [email protected] #1.
Build Number ITL41F.M420KREK24.
Please Let me Know Thank You
This is not a stupid question.
The simple answer is that the M420K is the KT Telecom version of the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, internationally known as I9250 but has bigger battery. So, yes. You can do all of the above.
For further info contact impala.cap2ya by PM or email him on [email protected]

Almost the same question though it might be repetitive or stupid. I have that HSPA+(3G) version of KT Telecom GN coming a few days later. Is that the GSM GNex? That is, will all the applications, custom ROMs and firmwares for GSM version in XDA going to work with my phone? I checked out both forums for GSM and CDMA version since all Korean phones use CDMA network, but it seemed like CDMA forum here was all about LTE version serviced by Verizon.

Basically, the Korean Galaxy Nexus is not CDMA. It is GSM and works in Korea using the 3G WCDMA. You can confirm this by switching off the 3G in the Wireless Settings "Use only 2G networks" and you will see that you lose the phone signal and can't make any calls.

would a pentaband GSM model work in Korea if brought from the u.s./Europe?

Yes.
Prepaid or temporary sim card is pretty hard to come by cheaply if you want data.
Yes. Forget prepaid sim if you want 3G data.

[solved.. won't work] T-Mobile 3G/4G on AT&T SGH-I747

I've got an unlocked AT&T Galaxy SIII, and I only get Edge for my data connection. Do I need to flash a T-Mobile radio? APN settings look okay, as far as I can see.
Also, can I flash a T-Mobile ROM and use Wifi calling, or is that asking too much?
I searched and couldn't find anyone asking these questions in the Q&A forum....
there are already like 3 threads below this one concerning the 3g/4g topic on a att sg3 working on tmobile. No it will not work because att sg3 does not support the aws tmobile frequencies. you will only be able to get edge. NOW if it were a tmobile sg3 on att then it would work.
All the threads I could find in this form on my search went the other way: T-Mo phone on AT&T.
Does anyone actually know whether a T-Mobile modem on an AT&T phone would work or not? I looked at the main board in my phone, and it's labelled with both SGH-I747 and SGH-T999, which makes me think the internals are fully identical.
I'd like to know this too! I also have an AT&T Galaxy SIII and was seriously considering moving to T-Mobile because of the new unlimited data plan they were going to start offering on 9/5. I had also looked through this forum, and could only find questions of the situation the other way around, T-Mob GSIII phone on AT&T network.
Basically, was wondering:
- is there a hardware limitation that APN settings and/or installing a new modem will not get me good data speeds?
- would I need to burn a new modem?
- I'm assuming at minimum I'd need new APN settings, and am assuming T-Mobile would be able to help with that. Right?
Thanks, really interested in being able to do this!

Where did you see that the boards were labelled the same?
AFAIK, the radio's are different and flashing a T-mobile modem could possibly brick your device. It would be much easier to buy a T999 and use it on T-Mobile (it'll even work on AT&T 3G if you want to switch back, no LTE though).
The SoCs are different. Flashing a T-Mobile modem will not give you T-Mobile HSPA.
Looks like I didn't take any pictures of that side of the phone while I had it open, and I'm not eager to pop it open again. It definitely listed both models on the PCB. If I'm remembering correctly, it's on the same side as the SIM and SD card slots, so it's just matter of removing the back plate to see it, no more disassembly than that.

Do you have part numbers for the two? According to wikipedia, they are the same Snapdragon S4 MSM8960. I just find it hard to believe that they would be different, though if they have the same pinout, that would explain the markings on my PCB.
This has been rehashed countless times. They are not the same phone. If the phones were the same, people would not be in here asking if they were the same. The MSM8960 comes in more than one flavor, with different modem parts. Yes, the CPU's are the same, but the MODEMS ARE DIFFERENT. It is an S4 Qualcomm part that comes in many different configurations. Instead of just reading until you get to some information that reinforces your preconceived notion, try reading a little further into the links at the bottom of the page and elsewhere. Seriously, if you really really don't think that Qualcomm would make different versions of the same chip, or configure them differently for the hundreds of different customer requirements, then fine, don't believe me, but it defies logic. Sorry about being an ass.

Thanks for the useful response. For those looking for even more detail, here's a link: http://www.qualcomm.com/sites/default/files/common/snapdragon-specs-06.07.12.pdf
According to that the MSM8960 (chip in I747?) has a "World Mode" modem, while the MSM8260a has a UMTS modem.
Edit: Ah, and I see both of you have answered this question before, which I would have found if I searched on MSM8260a. The threads have been dead for over a week, so I'm not surprised I missed them, but thanks for answering the same questions again.

T-Mobile uses a frequency for their 3g and 4g network that only T-Mobile branded phones have. Any other GSM phone will never get 3g or 4g on T-Mobile network unless it supports the T-Mobile band, which I believe is 1700MHz. It's limited by hardware. Nothing you can do to the phone will give you the 3g/4g you have to have a T-Mobile branded device.

Not completely true. Since The Galaxy SII and the Galaxy Note (AT&T) have software radios, you can flash a radio from the TMO GSII and get 4G on TMO. I was running mine and many customers of mine like that for months until i switched phones.

It works fine for me, the area i'm in does not support 4G on the 1900MHz frequency so I can definitely confirm my stock non-rooted AT&T i747 galaxy SIII is working on T-Mobile USA's 4G data network. I've uploaded a video to youtube of how to get this to work, should also work for the AT&T i317 note II as well. I can't post links on here I guess so just type my youtube username and search my videos.

This is NOT TRUE, please be careful when making such "absolute" statements -- I just got a ATT i747 from craigslist, and it DOES work with the $30 Walmart plan - on 4G and LTE (depending on location).
The TRUE ANSWER IS -- IT DEPENDS -- if you live in an area that was recently upgraded to LTE (in my area was 02/13), you can get LTE/4G since t-mobile added support for it on 700 MHz (band 4) AWS (unverified - source: youtube video named "Tmobile 4G on att i747 gs3 data fix". Sorry I am not allowed to post web-links yet).
Anyway, I DO get 4G/LTE, I guess I was lucky

Looks like 3g is not supported because the s3 does 850/1900/2100 and you need 900/2100. The s3 is missing the 900.
The international s3 (gt-i9300) looks like it will give you 3g: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9300_galaxy_s_iii-4238.php
both the i747 and i747m support 3G in africa. I also came across the "refurbished" ones that have a i9300 sticker at the back but in reality are i747 and i747m.
They are both fixable issues (working on 2G only). Needs flashing and then repair.

I ran into the same problem!! What's the fix? I opened the phone to see the model number on the motherboard. It is Sghi747. But the sticker under the battery shows I have GT-I9300.

Find someone who fixes phones locally, and ask them to repair NVM. And also to flash it with the correct flash file
Your suggestion did work. I appreciate your quick replies and kindness. Be blessed. You saved my Samsung Galaxy S3. It now shows 4G icon , typical of At&t S3 variant. I am enjoying the high speed Internet. Thanks again.

It's a code which only represents the numbers you hit on each menu. It's the numbers from the menus written together. You hit 1 on the first menu, 1 on the second menu...up to hit 5 on the last menu. 11865 is just written as a code for abbreviation.

[Q] WIND - Rogers incompatible frequency

I feel sure somebody must have asked this before, but I used the search function and couldn't find anything.
I've heard that WIND phones (SGH-T999V) are modified to their own frequency, so that you can't use a WIND phone on any other networks. But I figure if the hardware is the same, then you should be able to mod your phone to change the firmware right? And thus be able to use those other frequencies.
So where does the truth lie? For example if I had a phone I bought from WIND, and theoretically the hardware supported Rogers' frequencies, could I use Rogers if I switch to Rogers? And what is the case in terms of hardware support?
Thanks in advance
Wind and Rodgers are going to be similar to T-Mobile vs AT&T. I'm sure you can probably use the phone, but their data networks operate on different frequencies, meaning you might get 2g at best, maybe if you're really lucky you'd get 4g but it just depends. Check what frequency the phone operates on, then find what your preferred carrier uses, and if they match for 4g, then you should be fine. But it's not just Wind. Videotron, Mobilicity, and another I can't remember all use the T999V with the same firmware, so those carriers should all be compatible.
I imagine the same is true for Rodgers, Telus, and whatever else is covered in AT&T forums. You'd have to ask there to be sure though.

Oh, and if you use a T999V on Rogers you have to be unlocked, and expect little, if any support from the carrier on hardware issues.

[Q] Lenovo Z90-7 (VIBE SHOT) 4G UK HELP PLEASE?

Hi guys,
I have just bought this phone and flashed it with the latest firmware Android 5.1 as per the post on this forum. I am now very worried because my phone only seems to be connectiong to 2.4ghz network instead of 5ghz. Also I cannot get mobile data working.
What ROM/kernel did you flash? Many ROMs run 5.1.x

Hi I used this rom Z90a40_USR_S118_1505272046_Q2020131.4_ROW_qpst
which was mentioned here on the forum as the best for Android 5.1
Hey man, I've done some research and it seems your ROM/phone should support LGT(4G). I would highly suggest completely wiping your phone, reflash ROM/ Gasps/ kernel (if you have one) and see if the issue persists
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
The seller says I can send the item back for a full refund but unsure if he will give me a refund as I've changed the ROM to 5.1 The worst thing would be sending the device back to China
Okay, have you tried manually setting your APN? Fallow the steps below and findnthe APN settings online for your carrier, let me know what happens.
Many users have told me their 3G/4G LTE data network connection is broke after installing a custom ROM. *Well, in most of these cases, it can easily be fixed by manually setting the APN (Access Point Name). *This applies to any GSM networks such as*AT&T or T-Mobile. *For CDMA networks like Sprint or Verizon, they also use APNs but you don’t have to set them and should work out of the box.
Every carrier uses its own APN Settings to get its 3G/4G LTE network working on an Android smartphone or tablet device. *Now, these APN settings are usually “downloaded” automatically to your*phone*when you insert a SIM card. *BUT, there are times where the APN are not selected automatically OR when the APN settings are not downloaded.
In those instances, your 3G/4G LTE data will not work but that can easily be fixed.
Step 1. First, browse your Settings menu and find the “Access Point Names” menu. *This is usually under “Mobile Network Settings” or “More*mobile Networks or “Mobile Networks” under Settings menu depending on the Android device used.
Step 2. Once you are in the APN Settings menu, first thing you should check it that the APN is on the correct one. *If the correct APN is not checked (sometimes this happens), simply check ON the correct APN for your carrier. *That will make your 3G/4G LTE data working right away
tep 3. There are also times where the wrong APN is listed or there’s simply no APNs listed. *In these rare cases, you can simply add a new APN, hit the “+” button.
Step 4. For APN setting, the “Name” can be anything. *“APN” setting is the most important, usually you only have to fill this out for your phone to work.
For T-Mobile, you can set the “APN” to “fast.t-mobile.com”. *AT&T, you can set “APN” to “phone” or “pta”.
Now setting “APN” will get your data working but you still need to input additional settings to get your MMS working.
ep 5. You can usually Google APN settings for your carrier. *Whether you are in Thailand or in the U.S., simply Google for your APN settings like:
Google “t-mobile APN 4G LTE” for T-Mobile 4G LTE APN settings in the U.S.
Google “True Move APN 3g” for True Move 4G APN settings in Thailand.
Eventually, you should be able to find the full APN settings for your carrier whether you live in Hawaii or on North Pole.
Once you have the correct APN settings, simply input them into your APN settings on the phone
Step 7. Next, make sure to select the new APN Setting you have saved. *Within 5-30 seconds, your phone should start picking up 3G or 4G LTE signals and your data should be working again on the phone.

Hi guys,
I have just bought this phone and flashed it with the latest firmware Android 5.1 as per the post on this forum. I am now very worried because my phone only seems to be working on 3G. When I go into settings and network it only gives me the options to pick a 3G network. I did a lot of research before buying this phone and was assured it would work on 4G within the UK my old phone the Sony Xperia ZR worked on 4G fine. I do have the latest nano sim.
Here are the details of the Lenovo Z90-7 As per GSM Arena
Technology
GSM / HSPA / LTE
2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2
3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
4G bands LTE 800 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 - Lenovo Z90-7
And from my network operator's webpage I get the following info
4G from Tesco Mobile (o2) uses the following network frequencies:
800 MHz (0.8 GHz)
Am I having this problem as I flashed it with new firmware?

I believe the phone doesn`t have the LTE 800 frequency.
Search other websites than gsm arena.
That`s why you don`t get 4G.
Hi Friends,
Thanks for the quick replies I really appreciate the help. In regards to the APN settings I've checked these and these seem to be correct.
So it *Should* work EE
Interesting, I was hoping the APN settings were the cause. I'm sorry you couldn't fix your issue. I'm sure you will have better luck with your next device.

Valter84 you are correct I spoke to the seller and he advised that there is a mistake on the listing the phone does not support the LTE 800Mhz frequency.
So it *Should* work in the UK on the network EE which uses Band 3 FDD LTE (1800mhz). I've tried an EE sim and it still does not work at all on 4G.

Hi, I have the same trouble as you , anyway I have not flashed my Z90-7 yet. My chinesse seller from Aliexpress claims , that this phone supports all usual LTE frequencies including 800 Mhz.
But I can use here in Czech republic at T mobile provider only 1800 Mhz which covers only Prague and Mlada Boleslav . Rest of our country covers LTE on 800 Mhz only.

This seems to be a worldwide problem outside China. It is nothing to do with APN settings, etc.
A company is selling this phone on Amazon USA and they have specifically mentioned 4G does not work in the USA.
I am based in the UK and 4G doesn't work. I have flashed the phone and have now android 5.1 installed on it, but until official EU version of this phone is released we will be stuck with 3G

I can't connecting 5ghz too.
Just only can connecting 2.4ghz.
I can't find 5ghz network in WLAN list.
I succeeded installing the ROM. (use MiFlash tool)
ROM Version: Z90-a40_S118_1505272008_ROW
So, my phone's android version is 5.1
Z90-7 device can't support 5ghz WIFI network? or ROM's problem?
I want to know about this problem's solutions. (I want to use 5ghz wifi network!)
If anybody answer for me, I'll be very grateful.
Thanks for reading.

Dear people, wake up, many Chinese markets are deceiving customers by providing them misleading information. LTE bands is one clear example. Chinese LTE bands are diferent and they just flash the device's ROM for multi-language and add Google Play to make it "international version" but it is not. DON'T BUY IT!
I double checked with this company minideal.net which i cannot recommend. The company confirmed full FDD LTE (4G) functionality on following frequency bands: 800/1800/2100/2600MHz. But my smartphone IS NOT WORKING on 800MHz in The Czech Republic because it is only 1800/2100/2600MHz in fact. Within the PayPal Dispute and Claim they completely turned around their statements concerning LTE bands.
Complete tests were made with my network operator provider to rull out other problems. You can easily check that in these comments and in some fair e-shops where they don't twist the truth.

This is correct, the phone doesn't work on 800MHz. However it should because Qualcom 615 supports 800MHz. the reason it doesn't work is because the modem is probably locked within the ROM. I am hoping once this phone is release european version then it should work at 800MHz.

Hi, i already have had the European version of Lenovo Vibe Shot (chinese name Lenovo Z90-7) in my hands. I purchased it recently to compare the Czech and the Chinese model concurrently. All worked perfectly well with the Czech model. The device connected to 800MHz LTE band (band 20) INSTANTLY after the Android system start. No setting necessary at all. It connected to 800MHz T-mobile band in the Czech Republic. While with the Chinese only 3G or less! Another LTE band (2100MHz perhaps) worked well - Vodafone Czech Republic. So LTE hardware is ok but 800MHz missing...

No doubt i was intentionally deceived by the seller namely minideal.net; and many others customers are being deceived the same way!

Well, i consulted this with some mobile phone services earlier and they did not recommend updating the ROM like that. Your device can end up dead after it. The ROM must be perfectly tuned to the particular HW specification of your device to avoid the fatal consequences. It is quite risky... i was thinking the same way. I am disputing the seller via PayPal asking for partial refund to be able to re-sell the phone to someone who can do without 800MHz.
Also you cannot freely update the android system without loosing the multi-language and Google Play... So shopping mobile phones in China? NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE FOR ME!

Ok, i understand your point. I was thinking the same way. Some mobile phone services would refuse to update the ROM like that though, because it can kill the mobile completely. And who will take the responsibility? The Chinese dishonest dealers should! Let us tell them, we don't like their deception and lies! They are playing the "we don't know" game, but they surely know enough about the differences between Chinese and non-Chinese LTE bands.
But yes, there should be a way to change the ROM the same way the distributors of the real European version of this phone do it. Only where shall we get that ROM and ROM update done? Because, as i have already experienced, the local (Czech) Lenovo representation has no interest in helping owners of Lenovo products purchased in China. How predicable...
