Some basic info: Sprint SGS3; rooted, manually updated to LG8. Otherwise, stock.
Since then, I've noticed that my phone doesn't "hold on" to 4G as well as it did pre root and update. For example, the 4G icon will be next to the signal strength in my status bar then it will disappear, there will just be signal strength with no connection indicator then either 3G or 4G will appear. I don't ever remember this happening before root/update. I haven't flashed anything else on the phone, and the main reason I rooted in the first place was so I could easily tether.
Has anyone else had this same issue?
Its funny that the LG8 update was supposed to help users that were having LTE connectivity issues... this happens to me on occasion too. i would venture to say that a combination of LTE still being in early development and coverage being spotty at times even in areas where u may have gotten full coverage at one point plus the "Connection Optimizer" that often jacks with ur data connection switching between wifi, 3g and 4g(LTE)... try doing a ##72786# to reactivate ur phone on the network... this will automatically re-associate ur data profile with the network and update prl info as well...
+1 I have the same issue

Thanks for the reply. I'll try the ##72786# and report back with results.
You make a fair point about LTE still getting off the ground, but I will say that pre-root/update, my phone held 4G consistently. Whatever the issue is, hopefully it will sort itself out soon, or enough people will have the same issue that it spurs some action on Sprint's side.
I'm in Houston, FWIW.
Edit/Update: ##72786# seemed to do the trick. HOWEVER, about 15 minutes ago, I attempted to turn on WiFi Tether. My laptop connected with no issues, but about 5 minutes into it, neither the 4G nor the 3G icons appeared next to the signal strength meter. ##72786#'d again, just to see if it made a difference, updated PRL and Profile. Things are holding steady so far, but we'll see how long this lasts.
I'll try to update later in the day.

Glad to see it worked. This is by no means a permanent fix. As u flash different roms thru out ur phones life span its a good idea to run this code every so often as flashing can overtime degrade baseband performance as those files dont get replaced with a rom but different roms interact with those files depending on the tweaks made at software level...

I can't wait either. For those that have 4G i'm curious as to what the battery life is like and how much faster the network is on the SG3.

The issues cropped up again throughout the day, though not as frequently. I made a post in a reddit subforum and someone there suggested I flash new radios. Any idea on whether that would work, and if so, where/how/what?

It won't, till Sprint gets their network done. I've been back and forth on all radios, no difference IMO.

I am up here in Sugar Hill. Sprint Map shows you deep in LTEville. I worked in Tucker last year when a co-worker got a Verizon Tunderbolt. His 4G was screaming. He was getting 40+ down!
But the map also shows Cumming in LTE land so I drove over there just to see what LTE looked like and I saw the icon flicker on for about 30 sec. but it never really was there.

Just flashed back to LG2, so I'll update later and see how things are going.
I live in Dallas tax and according to the coverage map lte is all over. When my preferred network settings are set to lte/ cdma it never connects to lte goes to 3g for a few minutes then disxonnexts. Switch my preferred network settings to cdma and 3g is always connected. Could this be a cyanogen issue or do most people deal with this? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sprint's marketing department figured it'd be better to show LTE coverage of completion. Unfortunately, your area is probably not covered yet, but will be once the city is completely upgraded.
So basically I need to leave it in CDMA preferred network mode to keep it connected?

LTE coverage would be a Sprint problem - the random disconnects are timeouts through eHRPD via Cyanogenmod RIL issues. It wont timeout on you on other ROMs, but if you place it onto CDMA only, you'll be fine.
Until Cyanogenmod fixes the problem, the random LoS (Loss of Service) issues will continue.
If you download and use Sensorly, it shows actual coverage, where actual users have picked up LTE coverage.
Anybody know of good ROMs that don't have this issue? My friend said aokp is good but he's on a different carrier, any thoughts?
Thanks
I was using AOKP and was having this same issue... assuming it's because they get a lot of their code from the CM repos.
I ended up trying out a few different TW ROMs and my signal strength was amazing with any of them. Currently I'm using FreeGS3 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748818 ) and have no real issues.
The only thing that bugged me about the TW ROMs is some of the default apps like Email/Exchange, but I just replaced those with the APKs from AOKP and everything is fine.
If the signal issue gets fixed in CM/AOKP I would be more than willing to jump back, but the massive difference in signal strength is too much for me to not use a TW ROM.

All AOSP roms are based off CM10 github, so they're all going to have the issue. AOKP is a little dated now 11/10 build doesn't have LoS, but it doesn't connected to Ehrpd either. The issue is, once LTE connection is established, and you move outside an LTE area, you go LoS for a bit (some say 20 seconds, others say 5 minutes). But it wont lose signal until LTE is dropped.
EDIT: the cm10 timeouts were after the LJ7 blobs were implemented, which I believe were 11/11 and after.
This is also happening on stock jb.

thanks for the info, going to flash the tm rom when I get home.
Im in Dallas as well and its still being built out.
I get 3G at home, closer to down town. I get stable and steady 4G LTE at work, near Abrams and NorthWest HWY. In fact at my office on the 4th floor im on 4G LTE all day, ride the elevator down and by the time i get to my truck in the parking lot back to 3G. Drive a minute down the road and it might go back to 4GLTE again.
Luckily for me at my office on the 4th floor i get 4G LTE strong enough it holds the signal and isnt constantly switching.
The odd thing is a couple times a week my phone will switch to 4G LTE at my residence but when this happens i get no data on my device. I have to wait for it to go back to 3G to get data back. I think its a tower issue.
I'm having the same experience. LTE usuallys drops quickly. I get it in my apt and it is pretty fast. I live in Richardson. I experience LOS when I try to go from 4g to 3g. It drops the call everytime.
Well damn, hopefully they hurry and build out the network around dallas

I have been on the phone with TMO about the same thing for over a month, plus my issue goes a little further. I will lose connection to a tower and not get texts or calls until I reboot the phone.
TMO had me replace the phone and SIM card, then opened a ticket with the Engineers in Las Vegas to troubleshoot, their response was that it was a known issue and would be resolved in the next weeks or months.
Everything ran fine until they pushed out the 4G LTE update, after that the service has been horrible.... even after that update that was supposed to resolve it...
I am wondering if there is a ROM out there that someone built to address this issue as I have about had it...
I am rooted but haven't thrown a ROM on it .... yet

Im guessing you updated your phones softwarem if so, you may want to downgrade to a 4g non-lte radio, and set yourself up on a 4g apn as well. It should help at least until rhey correct their tower issues. 4g is still pretty fast and at least your mms / signal will work as you will be back in the 4g towers instead.
Edit
Actually try this:
Settings--> wireless and networks / more settings --> mobile networks --> network mode --> and select the automatic 4G /3g /2g setting
Then go to access point names and add a new one. The only 4 lines you need to edit are as follows :
Name - Tmobile 4g
APN - epc.tmobile.com
MMSC - http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
And
Apn type - default, supl, admin, dun, mms ( no spaces inbetween the comas )
Give it a shot and let us know if it helps. It should force you back onto the 4g towers which use a different frequency. If you still have issues, then keep all these settings active THEN try an older 4G radio.

Just like pyraxiate up here just said is exactly what i was going to say. Go to this thread right here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2102380 , & flash the last modem which is T889UVBMB4. I was using the T889UVBMD1 modem at 1st & was getting ok service but it just got to the point it was way to slow. I still go back to the T889UVBMD1 modem once and a while with the latest 4g lte apn but 75% of the day it is just way to slow of a combo. Like mentioned id also suggest flashing the T889UVBMB4 modem with the T-MOBILE US apn setting on this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2208408 . There's only one page on the thread so it will be right there when you scroll down.

It's screwed from coast to coast. Been back and forth driving from california to pennsylvania, and the network is spotty on LTE within LTE markets, otherwise it runs great until it hiccups.
Seems like you get the equivalent of 'buffer overrun' issues from cd burning. Gert a bunch of data quickly, then stops for a minute to sort it out, then another data burst.
Seems like it happens to deliver a handful of megs of data, then practically loses network service for a few seconds, then another couple megs of data.
Just what i've seen running around nationwide.
LTE is fast when you find it though, nowhere near the speed of my verizon LTE service, but I can live with it.
Hopefully once they finish the LTE rollout it'll be back to normal.
First let me apologize if this has been answered somewhere else before, I've read at least 15/20 different threads that had an issue similar to mine but none of the fixes suggested in those threads were of any help. I cannot seem to find anything about LTE working perfectly on someone's phone then just stopping working; every thread I have found pertains to people losing LTE after flashing a new ROM or while traveling to different cities.
I have a SGH-T999L and am located in Chicago where there T-Mobile does have an active LTE network in place. I have had my phone for almost a month now and have had no problems; I have flashed several different ROMs onto it (cyanogenmod, liquid smooth, pacman) without issues as well. Early yesterday morning though my LTE suddenly stopped working. I have not updated the device or changed anything on the phone or ROM. I haven't even installed any new apps in a few days. I first called T-Mobile, they said their network is working properly in Chicago right now. After determining it wasn't a problem with the towers, I tried reflashing the modem for the device (I got it from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880987) to no avail. Even though the IMEI was showing up properly I even did a NV restore to see if that would help, which it didn't. I then flashed the stock ROM (UVAMB7) to see if that would fix anything, however the phone is still not picking up LTE. I have even tried doing the diagnostic codes *#197328640# and according to that, the LTE radio is turned on and working properly.
As it is right now, the phone will go through periods where it cannot find any data signal for about 5 minutes at time then HPSA+15 turns on, which also confuses me as Chicago is HSPA+42 market and if I turn on my regular SGH-T999 and set it next to my SGH-T999L, it is able to pick up the HSPA+42 without a problem. Also, the phone hasn't been dropped or anything so I don't think it has to do with physical damage to the antenna or anything like that; literally I had my phone plugged in charging on the table all night and the next day the LTE had just stopped working. I have tried everything I can think of, if anyone can give me any help with this issue it would be very greatly appreciated

You might odin back to root66 and see if that works. If not, triangle away and warranty it out.

start a downliad, then go to Settings, about device, status. what does it show under network type? roms dont always didplay things as we are used to. this will show your true connection.

When I do that, it shows up as UMTS until I start downloading, then it will connect to HSPA+15 then go back to UMTS once the download finishes. The phone network type used to show as LTE before I had problems, sometimes it would switch between HSPA and LTE while I was downloading or loading webpages but it would still show LTE under network type. Now it seems as though it isn't even connecting to the LTE at all.
i wouldnt worry about the hspa 42 so much. it may be the lte devices dont use it in order to save bandwidth for non lte devices. just a theory.
as for lte, you can try flashing the T999N modem to see if it helps. otherwise id agree with the other suggestion. odin flash your root66 firmware and see if it still happens. if so it may be hardware related.

Thank you, I will try flashing the modem. As for reflashing via odin, I tried doing that and the problem is still there so if flashing the modem doesn't work, I'll have to call Samsung for a warranty repair . I just wish I knew why it randomly decided to fail so I don't accidentally kill any other devices lol
Well, flashing the modem didn't work. Hopefully Samsung will be able to repair whatever is wrong with it. Thank you so much for taking the time to try to help though, I very much appreciate it
it could be something as simple as an antenna becoming disconnected, or something wrong with the radio itself. but once you are full stock, and still having issues it pretty much rules out a firmware/software type issue. Leaving the most likely cause to be one you probably couldnt fix.
just to make sure tmobile was correct, id try to go a few miles away and see if it connects though. just to be thorough.

Thanks for the advice but I read through the thread already and it doesn't seem like it will improve drastically. So I rather not attempt to flash a modem that may cause a soft brick. My brother has a N900a and gets almost triple the speed of my lte. What gives?
I dont always get fast speeds. I'm guessing at&t phones get higher priority than other phones. There is a build.prop that you can flash/edit that may or may not work. I, myself, haven't made any mods because I get higher speeds usually. Not always. I am on a 900T but using an international 9005 rom with T-Mobile modem still. It really boils down to is the risk flashing a modem or build.prop worth it. In downtown houston I rarely dip below 10mb/s on LTE and occasionally see over 20mb/s. The congestion is real bad here so it is very often I get bumped back down to hspa. Like I said, you have to weigh the risks. I am fine with how it is working now. My post probably hasn't helped you get you where you want to go but it may help you to be content with what you have or may consider flashing an international rom minus modem and see if that helps.

I'm on straight talk att sim and it's ridiculous on an att phone I get att quality signal. But with this tmobile phone when home I can only get signal in my bed room by the window . I hate paying that extra 30 dollars but a phone is no good in one room .

I as well am on Straight Talk At&t micro sim and I get pretty decent speeds I believe Straight Talk cap's their LTE speeds at 15 down and I think around 8-9 up which ain't bad for the Chicago area. But there are times where I barely get 2 down and 4 up. I also have a Tmobile Note 3 stock/rooted using a ST sim.

Tmobile Note 3 on ATT Network
I have a Tmobile unlocked phone on ATT and I can't find out anyway to speed up the LTE. I get LTE it seems, but it cuts the speed in half compared to my girlfriend ATT variant Note 3. I tried to flash an AT&T modem to it, but then it would soft brick the device and wouldn't boot. I have tried every APN I can think of, but still no success. I have tried the build.prop, like adding the lines for faster data tweak, but still nothing is getting better. I have full bars, but speed is slow. Do you have any suggestions on what to do, b/c I am out of options. Thanks.
Add me to the list. Just switched over to AT&T from T-mobile, but get very bad speeds. The only reason why I switched over was because with T-mobile, I was getting poor quality signal almost EVERYWHERE, so I had no choice.
I'm curious; if the bands in our phones support the proper AT&T bands and we actually get LTE, it's gotta be a software issue. Modem most likely.
Yeah im sure it has to do with the way the modem is optimized for ATT's 1700 band. I'm also in the same boat and have flashed ATT's modem but it doesn't work. Others have flashed ATT modems but I dont think anyone has been able to successfully see their baseband change in the settings so no one can say whether it worked for sure. I can tell you that the bars have nothing to do with your call signal though, its just your LTE signal strength. If you really want higher signal in your house if LTE seems to drop or be super slow, you should manually switch over to use HSPA+ in your house. Its a pain...i know.
I'm hoping eventually the newer modems fix the 1700 mhz frequency optimization or some devs figure out how to successfully flash N900A modems on the N900T.
LTE speeds
I have great signal almost always it seems like. I have full bars on LTE or 4G/HSPA+, but if I put my sim card in my AT&T variant note I get at least twice as much throughput than with the note 3 tmobile. It has to be a software issue, I have tried to flash att modems with no success. Just got to wait for a tweaked modem. I have even tried tweaking build.prop file and it works a little bit but not much. It is just weird I have full bars with LTE, but I won't be able to get data sometimes, which is really weird. I think there has to be something with the signal bars showing higher dbm that it actually is receiving. Probably another software glitch. Well if anyone has any insight on this issue let us know, please been looking everywhere.
LTE speeds
I think also that the modem is not the only issue. I flashed a kernel today after being on the stock kernel on the T-Mobile and I did a speedtest and the speeds were really low. Flashed another kernel and boom faster speeds back to where I was, maybe higher, but I will monitor to see what happens. But I read that Kernels do affect data speeds sometimes. I am just going to keep looking around to see if any kernels work.

AFAIK it has nothing to do with kernel I might be wrong its just the modem

Is there any tweaks that can be done to kinda help the LTE or at least fix my signal bars showing full all the time. I am thinking it is not switching towers when it is supposed to and giving a false signal strength. Is there anything on modifying like you can on Sprint phones with dbm on wimax, where it will switch antennas.
Has anybody flashed the new N900T NE6 based ROMs / modem and seen any difference?

I upgraded the modem and bootloader to the new NE6 version. I'm on Temasek CM11. My observations:
Signal strength is slightly better. Speeds are definitely much better. Prior to the upgrade, I'd get around 6-15/down, 3/up. Now I consistently get 25/down, 10/up.

How did you get the new modem to stick? Did you do the triangle away method? If so, did you have to revert to a stock kernel first? I'm trying to upgrade only the modem and leave the bootloader as is. Is that a bad idea?

It's getting incredibly frustrating to have to repeat this a number of times. I think this morning I had to repeat it already 3 times. Please do a search; there are plenty of pointers on how to get it done. For reference, here is what I did.
