[Q] SD Card Ext Mount issues - INTERESTING clue but need help. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear enthusiastic helpful geeks
I have an interesting challenge for all those who are interested.
I am android fan, amateur and a doctor by profession.
I have 3 years old HTC Desire Bravo GSM
I rooted using Unrevoked 2 years ago and used CyanogenMod.
I have been using S2EXT app all these years to solve the well known internal memory problem.
I found Jelly Bean very interesting and flashed the VJ 4.2.2 CM10.1 V6.3
I just love it.
With terminal emulator, I used the commands as instructed and had this message.
$ su
# a2sd install
Found block device: /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Removing flag a2sd
Removing flag ad2sd
Removing flag dc2sd
setting flag a2sd
/system/bin/a2sd: line 73: /sd-ext/.a2sd: Read-only file system
chmod: /sd-ext/.a2sd: No such file or directory
Would you also like to move DALVIK-CACHE?
You can later undo this with 'nocachesd' (y|n)
I came to know SD EXT is not mounted
Tried mounting sdext through ROM manager and got the message
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(File exists)
I flashed back CM 7 reluctantly
SD ext did not mount at first.
I downloaded S2EXT and I had to tick the box which said Mount as ext4 (mount sd-ext as ext4 without journaling)
Now, the disabled options got enabled and I could ask for the movement of applications, dalvik cache and rest of the stuff to sd ext.
I have the log generated by S2EXT app about what happened.

S2EXT
GParted partitioning SD Card
1. Primary ~14GB FAT32
2. Primary ~1GB ext4
I want to use CM10.1 VJ version 6.3 and to be able to mount SD Ext and move apps to it so that my internal memory does not get full.
S2EXT can fix this issue but is not compatible with JellyBean. - How could it do? Can I do it somehow?
Why is that mounting SD Ext and moving apps is not possible on VJ version?
I am not so confident in using adb shell and other advanced stuff as advised in the forum.
Hence, writing all I know to see if someone can spot a solution and help me solve it in a simpler way.
Help me enjoy the Jelly Bean and make my Desire Re-Live !

I suspect ROM manager may have caused a problem, it's a known issue that that app is bad for Desire. Mounting the ext-ext may have screwed it up somewhere.
Uninstall it.
I would backup the FAT32 bit of the sd card to PC, delete all partitions and repartition using gparted again, just in case. You can go for 1.5-2GB if you really don't want to run out of space.
Then reflash the rom, follow the instructions to use A2SD, don't bother with S2E anymore.
Up to you, I would also consider going s-off as well, it's a lot more advantageous. You can then do things such as change hboot for smaller ROMs and have even more space for apps. You could also install 4EXT recovery (see my sig), and do the partitioning using that recovery too.

Thanks a lot
Thanks Eddiehk6 for your wonderful advice.
ROM manager - I can uninstall it.
I tried S-Off using Revolutionary but it somehow did not let me pass with the Beta key (invalid key)
I will try again.
Advice on SD ext size is useful. I shall do it.
S2E does not work with Jelly Bean anyway
I shall try 4ext recovery.
Thanks once again.
I will update this for future reference of someone like me

Yes, uninstall ROM manager. It's not all bad, just very bad with this phone, you don't need it.
As for the BETA key, just make sure you type it exactly, or copy / paste (but make sure you don't copy any leading or trailing spaces). Most likely you confused an i or 1 or L or O or 0 somewhere.

Update
Dear Eddiehk6
Thanks for the response.
I successfully S-OFF
You were right I mistook 1 l and I characters while using Revolutionary beta key. Also, I was wrong in putting IMEI number instead of the Serial number. Funny enough SN comes in the black window of Revolutionary.
I also installed 4EXT recovery as I became S-OFF.
Partitioned as per the tutorial in this forum.
Flashed CM10.1 VJ version as per the instructions.
A2SD Termminal emulator again had problems with mounting of SD EXT !
I used Mount2SD
Init.d script was not installed - when I installed it, moved the apps, they disappeared. I could not find the Play services also !
Memory was still consumed. Apps were there but not seen.
I finally gave up at early hours of the morning and went back to CM7 reluctantly.
The log from S2E has a clue. I just don't know how to use that clue.
Have a look above at the orange log of S2E if you can and see if you understand please.
My search tells me that I should have some adb shell knowledge to solve it and I don't !
I am ok with old ROM. Help me if you can to make my Desire live longer.

At least you're s-off now which is good
So how did you partition your sd card? I know you have 4EXT and it's easy to partition with that, but I would personally stick to gparted in this instance as you need to start from scratch, also you've used it before anyway?
Make sure you backup the sd card, then delete all partitions first (don't resize). Then make one FAT32 partition, and one (~1.5GB) ext4 partition, no swap.
Within 4EXT recovery there should be an option to check the partitions are aligned, do this (they should be if properly done in gparted, but worth a check)
Full wipe again, reflash rom just to be sure.
Try getting the terminal emulator commands working first, follow all instructions exactly. Don't use another app or script for now, start clean and get it working.
If you still get the error, /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 error, I think this may be related to a usb brick, not absolutely sure, there is 'USB unbrick' option within 4EXT as well, try that.

CM7 is still fine, just because it's 'old' doesn't make it bad, the Desire can still live long. Now that you're s-off you can even change hboot with that ROM and get more internal memory if you like, even more space for apps
I'm still on a GB ROM myself nothing wrong with it. Stable, battery is fine for me. Regardless you should still be able to get A2SD working.

Update
Thanks Eddiehk6
I would try all that you told me.
I had used 4ext recovery as I was exited with the S-OFF and Change of recovery status of my phone.
I would try and do clean start again and see.
The link I was mentioning which involves adb shell knowledge is the message #4 in this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848967
recurrent theme is e2fsck. I don't know how to use these codes: Terminal emulator / adb shell ? But I would try your method as I can do them.
I would also check alignment through the recovery.
Mildwild download link is broken. I would try for JB first and then if no luck, I would try GB. Its just that in my nexus7, I am used to JB.
CM7 is most stable I have seen ( i have used only one ROM so far I am quite happy with it too.
Thanks for all the support.

Another useful link which I don't know how to use as I don't have adb shell knowledge.
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/6433-solved-messed-up-partitions-on-internal-storage/#entry56396

Solved
Problem was with mounting ext 4 of my card
S2e could mount it
But s2e was not compatible with 10.1 of cyanogenmod
Hence I put 10 version
Used s2e to mount
It did not move apps
Used terminal emulator as per instructions by vj
All worked thanks all of you

[Q] How to create an Apps2SD partition.

I'm using ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1 and i've seen a couple of guides where I go into the recovery and do some bits and bobs there to create it, but the only options I seem to get are to mount the sd-ext partition, which fails because it doesn't exist, or to format it.
I'm guessing there is a step beforehand i'm missing?
Thanks
download rom manager from market , open it , then create a ext3 partionion ... done
before you create a partition , backup your sd card!!

I had the same problem.
You can create the partition using the ROM Manager app downloaded from the market as yasars said.
Alternatively, if you want to do it manually, you can format the card on a *nix system. The Gparted Linux app lets you edit the partitions in a nice and simple GUI. Just remember the order of the partitions: first fat32, then about 512 MB of ext2/3/4 (ext4 may not be supported by all ROMs so better to use ext3) and lastly a swap partition of about 32 MB (totally optional). The size of the fat32 partition is whatever is left over after you've allocated the 512 MB for the ext2/3/4 partitions (and the 32 MB for the swap if you decided you wanted it). For instance, for a 2GB card, leaving 512 MB for the ext2/3/4 partition (no swap) leaves us with about 1.5 GB for the fat32 partition. You do the calculations for your card in your head or on paper and use those values in Gparted.
HTH.
Thanks for the help guys
I think i'll just get it up and running using the ROM Manager and if I find the need I'll do a manual version

Yes it should be a sticky!
Having a problem when I try to use ROM Manager.
I select the 512 for EXT and 32Mb for Swap and the phone reboots.
It then shows the big triangle with Mr Android next to it until I press some buttons and then I get the recovery screen with the following messages
Finding Update Package....
Opening Update Package....
Verifying Update Package....
E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip (Invalid Arguement)
E:signature verification failed
Installation Aborted.
I don't have a cache folder on my sd card so i'm guessing it's looking in the internal memory?
Not sure what to do here
BACK-UP sd card before you do this.
For windows users
have clockwork recovery and rom manager on your desire
then format sd in windows.
put it in your desire and go to rom manager.
select Partition SD Card
select your space i used 32 swap 512 ext
than reboot and your sd card has the ext partition.
than put your files back on your sd card and Done

I had the same problem with ROM Manager. My solution was to downgrade ClockworkMod Recovery to v2.5.0.0 (in ROM Manager) and then partition the card. Worked on first try.
When you're done you can upgrade to latest version again if you want.
I don't think you should use a swap partition, so just set it to 0 MB.
Good luck!
Do i just need to find the 2.5.0.0 update.zip file and flash?
going to 2.5.0.0 worked
so now i have the ext partition do I need to do anything for apps to be installed there, or will they install there by default?
Also i've heard that the ext partitions can be 2 3 or 4. I'm presuming higher is better. How do I go about finding what mine is and how can I upgrade it if it need it?
Thanks

Thanks,

I read the tutorial again and you can use an SD adapter, worked a treat. Cheers

As long as you have an ext2/3/4 partition and the ROM you're flashing has A2SD support (check before you download the ROM), you are not required to do anything more. To check whether A2SD is working once you've flashed your ROM, download the Android Terminal Emulator app from the market and use the following commands
Code:
su
ls -l /data
You should see your app directory pointing to /system/sd/app and app-private pointing to /system/sd/app-private
I'm not sure which format ROM Manager defaults to, but you can always check the type of format used by mounting the card in Linux and using the GParted Linux app (you could use a card reader or use the 'Disk Drive' option in your phone to connect it to the computer). Also, ext3 should be fine for most custom ROMs. In fact, not all ROMs support ext4.

- Another quick way is to install quick system info from the Market, it tells you infos about your system, including the use of your a2sd partition.... ;-)
- About ext 2/3/4 I would advise the use of ext3, as ext4 is poorly supported by Roms (even those who pretend seem to have issues...)

Does the decrease of available internal storage means apps22sd+ is not working? I've partitioned twice and installed seperate 2.2 roms with apps2sd+ included and every time I install more things I see internal storage drop.

Not in itself, no. Those symbolic links mean that A2SD is working fine. However, from what I understand about the theory, even A2SD installs a part of the app into the internal memory. That may explain the drop you see. By the way, how much free memory do you see on your device? I usually have about 140 MB free on my Desire. I read somewhere that if A2SD wasn't working, that figure would be about 90 MB.

I just recently opened spare parts apps where it allowed me to change where apps2sd installs things. By default it was set to automatic and I'm guessing that was causing the problem. I set it to external and tried installing a browser while my disk was mounted and it wouldn't let me do it. Then I set it to charge mode and it installed normally.
Some roms probably default to external while some automatic.
edit: Just installed an app that I previously installed while using "automatic" and it still uses up internal storage instead of A2SD storage. Dunno what's wrong. I am using ext2 partitioned through rom manager.

[Q] No Partition Options

YO!!
First off I want to say this site is dope and tons of help to match.
This has most likely been asked before, but..uh I dont see/get it.
I have been trying to create partition ext3-ext4 on my sd with absolutly no luck.
I've been readin this for days now and never seem to find a definitive answer.
Everyone says that while in recovery you have option to partion ext3-ext4, but I guess my phone is retarded for some reason. While in recovery(any version and its clockwork btw) if i go to partition sd, once in that menu it brings up 5 different sizes. I check the last one and then the second step is to pick the swap. After I check what I want for the swap it starts the partition. Nowhere in the recovery menus(anywhere) do i see any options for ext2-4(ext2, ext3, etc etc).
So my question is: If it's not there where do I find it or is there any other option and is it really worth it?
I know how to gpart (or whatever you call it) but not sure how to allocate the sizes. 32GB sd class4
I've finally figured out adb and flashed several times. Call me blind, call me crazy, call me stupid...just don't call me coffee.
any help would be great.
T-Mo G2 is the device.
ps. I guess I'll get this out of the way so i don't have to keep posting dumb questions. I notice when flashing roms and it goes to mount the sd-ext(might have that spelled wrong sorry) I always get an error saying unable to load dev/block/mmcblk1 not formating. Nothing happens and the roms still flash just fine(usually). I saw this question before but everything I read that was supposed to be a"fix" didn't work. I am assuming I'm getting this because my sd isn't properly partitioned. any help on this would swell as well
oh yeah and it's ENG S-Off and all that other jazz. Used the gfree/rage method
cheers
Theres an option in ROM Manager to partition your sdcard for you but I have never had any luck getting it to work.
Heres A LINK that will walk you thru partitioning your sdcard thru ADB, it works, I used it to partition my sdcard, Just remember the sdcard for the HTC VISION is at dev/block/mmcblk1, the instructions will tell you to partition dev/block/mmcblk0, but this is for a diffrent phone. You want to partition dev/block/mmcblk1.
WARNING: DO NOT TRY TO PARTITION dev/block/mmcblk0
thanks for the reply. I learned that last night, lol thats the one I learned from last night. Problem is I need some input on how much to allocate for each partition. 32GB card.
cheers
Are you trying to partition your sdcard for use with apps2ext? If so since you have such a high capacitiy sdcard I would partition it to 1024mb ext2, 32mb linux swap and the rest FAT32.
Just a side note, remember to remove the existing partiton (which is the stock fat32) before starting the partitioning process,
â– Command: rm 1 (deletes partition number 1)
so how to I get the ext4 partition? same as i did the first 3? the reason I ask is because I still dont have sd-ext after i partition with recovery. I want to move dalvic cache so that my widgets will work from sd card
If it helps im using GV1.5 rom with the proper recovery 3.0.0.5 ( which as I just noticed is now the new recovery rom manager wants you to flash...got tired of having to adb 3.0.0.5 everytime I wanted to test CM7 or GV1.5)
thanks
i just tried running the following in adb after card was wiped:
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 31712 that worked
mkpartfs primary ext2 31712 32736 and then got error saying:
The location 32736 is outside of the device /dev/block/mmcblk1
so i think the problem is my card is actually 29.9GB and since my math is crap I cant figure what esactly to put...
Just move your ext partiton a little lower, the same thing happened to me when I tried to partition at first, had to play with the numbers a little. You don't have to get the total card capacity filled with a card that big what's a few mb's.
Sent from my HTC Vision
maybe I should of asked this first.
My reasoning for doing this is I read somewhere that if you can upgrade to ext4 you would be able to run widgets off sd card because the phone thinks it's stll on the actual internal storage,
am I wrong?
There's only one rom that supports apps2ext , which is what your looking to do and that is Enoms rom, but there is also Darktremor's apps2sd mod in the dev section which will enable this on all roms, in either case you need a card partitioned to at least FAT/EXT2.
Sent from my HTC Vision
got it. after darktremors script while in shell i ran ap2sd cachesd and wa la.
thanks again

[Q] A2SD+ and low internal memory

I haven't found really good explanation on forum and most of post on this seems not to be answered so I'm posting to see if I can get this sorted.
I used Leedroid, InsertCoin, and now on GingerVillian now. All of them had same setting of 500MB ext partition. Problem is I always seems to get low internal memory no matter what ROM I use. Currently I have 394MB free SD-EXT and 16MB Internal.
I moved adobe flash to SD card which seems to free up space and Dalvik Cache is on SD-Ext.
So question is why even though I have lot of EXT space left is it not being used and is there way to make it use it more instead of internal memory?

App2SD is flawed because of this, say you have an app 20mb, 15mb would be put on to the SD card and the rest go's to internal, so you will still use up space and in the end will have to start uninstalling.
Best way is to use a Rom with data2SD witch give's you 2gb internal memory.

Data2SD RoM problems solved
One could also flash a new hboot which increases the size of the /data-partition. However you need s-off for this and it's imho riskier than flashing a rom with data2sd. Whereas i work with a2sd + cm7 hboot and i am very happy it.
Desire with Cool Sensation v7
Hi,
I have this problem too. but it is not our choice to choose the data2sd instead of app2sd because it depend on what the ROM support.
Previously I use App2sd+ from ModaCo ROM. I have 200+ apps and it take the internal memory nearly full but sd-ext space just half.
I tried the Data2sd for Desire is only SuperNova with HTC Sense and it work in 1Gb sd-ext. BUT it uses Sense 2.1.
I just try Sense 3 from Cool Sensation v7 ROM. I love it and dont want to revert back to previous Sense It have 3D home screen, cool weather animation, SMS secure lock. However this ROM still use app2sd. I cannot post to the thread, I dont have enought post count.
I try some other way to apply Data2sd into this ROM but I got boot loop.
After few days I use this ROM, my internal memory almost full (15mb free) for only 57 apps even the app2sd symlink-ed /data/app, /data/app-private, /data/dalvik-cache and /system/app into sd-ext!
Expert please help me and give me some idea.
Do I need to symlink /data/data into sd-ext manually?
Is it possible to remove app2sd in the ROM and install Data2sd? How?
Data2sd require busybox, init.d and ext4 kernel support. I think this ROM have all this thing.
HTC Desire
Hboot S-Off with Revolutionary
4ExtRecovery
Cool Sensation v7 ROM
8Gb Class 2 sd card with Fat32 + 1Gb ext4
And have some basic in Linux shell
I can 100% get my head around this either, although i did install some apps and i could really tell if it was on Internal or EXT4.
From my understanding, as far as the phone os, it thinks apps are on Internal and will decrease the size counter, but apps are on EXT4 if you use a file manager etc.. but even if all goes to EXT4, we still get that annoying LowDisk message was it get to 15megs...
I still was convinced, but i accidently decided i wanted to format my FAT32 partition, mainly to get rid of all the junk that on there since STOCK Rom. I used the Phone own Format SD Card option.
Well that was fun (NOT!!) it instead formatted the EXT4 and not the FAT32, when i rebooted all the loaded apps that were on EXT4 were now gone.
Phone still works, but one side effect of this is now i have like 270megs free....lol, granted no wallpaper, lockscreens etc,
anyway seeing as i screwed up and that im already S-OFF, im going to just go with CM7r2 HBoot.
Similar issue - I think?
Hi all, my first post here
So I have been working my way through all the error messages and guides and finally have InsertCoin set up. All is looking good except after Titanium Backup restored all my apps my internal memory is as full as before I rooted the phone, so I think I can safely say that the 2gb I partitioned off on my SD is not getting ay use at all? Is there a way I can check?
For the record I am running with AmonRa, and I used Revolutionary to get s-Off. The guide I followed to set up A2SD did not have me using any Terminal commands, so I am guessing that is an area for me to explore in solving this, here is the guide I used (near the end)
/myhtcdesire.com/modding/how-to-install-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-desire
I used that method as i am on a borrowed mac and it just seemed easier. I
I am hoping there is an easy fix that someone can suggest.

So I have been working my way through all the error messages and guides and finally have InsertCoin set up. To check if a2sd is working, open terminal emulator and type
Code:
su
ls -l /data
Output should say (for a2sd):
Code:
app -> /sd-ext/app
app-private -> /sd-ext/app-private
Additionally for a2sd+:
Code:
dalvik-cache -> /sd-ext/dalvik-cache
If it does not show this, a2sd is not working. So make sure you partitioned sd card correctly (fat32 + ext; both primary).

Hi,
I have this problem too. but it is not our choice to choose the data2sd instead of app2sd because it depend on what the ROM support.

I used Cool Sensation v7 but didn't have this problem until I flashed the newer v9 (just noticed v10 has been posted today though). My internal memory was very low but I then flashed the Dalvik to sdext.zip from the Cool Sensation thread and then had 180MB internal free. Try that and see if it works. If it doesn't, have you aligned your SD ext using the .zip on the same thread? if not this could be why your having problems, though it didn't work for me.
Thanks for the ideas, I was a bit out of my depth with the Mac SU functions, so although i didn't get the desired feedback you suggested, but it could have been me. So anyway I found a Ubuntu machine and plugged in the SD card in an adapter and can see that there is a successful partition, and that the EXT partition seems to have some files and folders in it.
I have also just noticed that the SD cards partitions also appear in the Titanium Backup overview screen.
So i guess my problem is that the memory is just full! Maybe my expectations of extra memory after rooting were unrealistic. ?
For the Record, just to make sure my situation is normal, in Titanium I see
System ROM - 262MB (129MB free)
Internal - 158MB (15MB free) - is this just a section of system ROM above?
SD CARD - 13.8GB (11GB free)
SD Card (a2sd) - 1.9GB (1.5GB free)
@xybadog this is my update,
@hoads1234 just want to share with you,
I use Cool Sensation v7, the internal memory full can be solved by flashing the additional zip for stock hboot but I flash non stock hboot. Why?
After some studying, now I know why expert keep asking for my hboot. Hboot define the data partition. On the phone memory, it divided into system, cache and data partition. the hboot define the partition size. For stock hboot, you will only have 147Mb for HTC Desire. Whatever the custom ROM symlink'ed some data partition, we stuck on 147Mb. If you flash like CM7r2 hboot, you will get more room (300+Mb) on data but just enough for system. "Internal memory" is referring to data partition.
Now I still have 130Mb free internal memory after installing 90 apps without wiping any cache for about 2 weeks.
I dont have Ubuntu even I know how to use it. No time to install or make virtual machine. To partition your sdcard easily without linux, use 4ExtRecovery. It is CWM based recovery plus support for Ext4 and some features like partitioning, check for aligned sd-ext and mount as disk drive.
To check for your current internal partition. boot into recovery, and use ADB to run command "df -h". The /system /data and /cache is the thing you need to look for.
You could use the cyanogenmod rom, then install s2e app from market. That app is designed purely for use with cyanogenmod. I use this combo, I have a huge amount of apps installed and still 50mb of internal space free. No need for changing your hboot or using data2sd rom. Very simple fix

okay thanks, I am still happy having a go with InsertCoin, so I will have a look at the hboot.
I think i read somewhere that i could do it just like adding a new ROM and copying a zip file across, so time for some more forum reading to work my way through this next step.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110921
okay here is my update, since in have revolutionary hboot, i tried to change to alpharev, so i could use their modified partition tables (found no reference of being able to do this in Revolutionary) - the folks on alpharev irc said not to, but didn't say why.
I did try and use the unrevoked tool to flash AmonRa across again, but this had a waiting for reboot error and may have failed. I have also reflashed my ROM again after a full wipe a couple of times. Not finding any improvements in memory, so will keep fiddling.
okay next question!
I tried the terminal emulator commands (once i worked out this was an app, and not the Mac terminal..) and got the following responses
app -> /system/sd/app
app-private ->
dalvik-cache ->
so am i guessing correctly that none of the apps i download are being sent to the SD partition.
Any advice to get app-private directed to my sd card?

I suggest you use ADB instead of terminal emulator because easy to type in PC.
Install Android SDK make ADB shell to work and connected to your device. The shell is just the same what you need to do in terminal emulator.
To move app private and dalvik cache simply make symlink like this:
Code:
busybox cp -a /data/dalvik-cache /system/sd/
rm -rf /data/dalvik-cache
ln -s /system/sd/dalvik-cache /data/dalvik-cache
The first will move all contents, the second will remove the existing original dalvik-cache folder. and the third one will make symlink to point from original location to the sd partition.

[Q] My SD partition is not picked up by A2SD+

Hey,
Recently I've partitioned an 8GB SD-card through RA Recovery v2.0.1 to have a 1024MB EXT4 partition without swap (later I tried EXT2, EXT3 and an aligned EXT4 as well).
After installing a ROM said to be compatible with A2SD, the latest Supernova 2.4.0.1, it did not show the additional storage room that should be available from the SD partition.
Also when using a terminal emulator app, after granting it Superuser permission, I could not get any evidence on my phone being able to see the SD partition. "a2sd" and "app2sd" commands are not recognized and the "busybox df -h" and some other command did not return any evidence on an SD partition being present.
Other ROMs I've tried installing were the latest Cool3D RunnyMede and the Runnymede&Bliss.Mix ROMs. Both froze at their boot screens (due to not being able to access SD partition?).
Some (additional) information on my HTC Desire:
- GSM
- Stock HBOOT
- Stock radio
- RA Recovery v2.0.1
So yeah, I was wondering if you guys could help me on getting my SD partition to function Thanks in advance!
I've got the _exact_ same problem. I hope someone at XDA can help, because I'm eager to try Chrome Beta on my Desire with ICS.
Sent from my G100W using XDA
Try redo it with gparted or flash 4ext recovery if s-off
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using XDA Premium App
Thanks for the reply!
But sadly I won't be able to confirm whether that would've fixed my problem. I switched to MildWild's CM 3.8 ROM and that alone had my SD partition working for me.
Although it initially didn't appear to have the extra storage room (it displayed around 120MB in the Applications and Storage menus), I soon noticed that after installing a new app, that amount would first drop but then rise back to ~120MB again.
Typing the "busybox df -h" command in the Terminal Emulator confirmed that there was indeed a 1GB partition present from something called "sd-ext"...which would be the partition I made!
But could it be that I have to install A2SD+ separately for certain ROMs and is included in others?
Some like CM need this setup - mostly run AOSP roms myself but boot loops point to issue with the SD-ext partition. As was said earlier Gparted is the way to go to partition, and will align perfectly as well - if it were me I'd nandroid including sd-ext if separate in AmonRa (I use 4EXT Touch Recovery myself), copy sd contents to PC as back up, and re-do partitioning in Gparted.

[Q] Moving apps to SD card android 4.3->

So what I have gathered is that this phone even with root/cmod/titanium backup doesn't allow me to move apps to my _real_ sdcard. So is it really phone related or is there a way to do it with custom rom/kernel or some other way?

on stock android 4.2 u could actually use app2sd to move some apps to external storage
using Cyanogenmode 4.3 based Carbon MOD i found that i no longer can do that, tried app2sd and link2sd
i read somewhere that external storage is defined in system PATH variables, dont know how relevant that is but seems connected
but i honestly dont know yet much about the android platform to fix this issue myself, so i might be wrong
we need some pro tip help
Would be very interesting to habe feature. Especially for phones with only 8 GB internal flash. Hope this will come for my s4 Mini. Samsung has this implemented in their stock Rom.

Yes this would be awesome, but seems that cmod has gone moneymaking company and tries to make cmod to google standards which means they have been starting to remove/hiding features. Their goal now is to make installing cmod without cwm and to remove root or have it as optional feature. Or all this is what I gathered over the net, but I still hope some other custom rom could have this feature.
Edit:
All of the above may not be like that nowadays, and this is somewhat speculation since there hasn't(?) been an official statement from cm about app2sd support. Though emulated sdcard may require something different.

This feature may only need one to repartition the sdcard, but I can't get it to mount as mass storage nor with sdcard reader(it shows "empty" card) in windows(maybe i should try it in linux).

About two months ago I upgraded my Xoom to JB 4.2.2, and because space was limited, I hadn't noticed whether I could move operating programs to the external card or not. This was a custom rom. Well, I was using a 32 Gig card that was nearly full of data.
This last week, I invested in a 64 Gig sdhc card and upgraded my rom to Kit-Kat 4.4.2. Thus its also a custom rom, but now I find that though, for the most part, I can designate the external card to store and access data from, I can't run programs from it. Hmm!
Here I am with all this memory. Sure wish I had better management options.

Well check my thread on my signature and the requests section in the 1st post for more info on about app2sd.
Resolve the issue
Hi all,,,
This is my first time in XDA. Someone fixed this bug for me. You need to be rooted to fix this issue. Install from market Terminal Emulator and type the following commands
su
/system/bin/restorecon -R -v /data/media/

Can I check with you what bug this fixes?
Ability to use app2sd?
I use FolderMount and works real well. No need to partitioning sd card.
I've gotten to getting Link2SD working on the GT-I9195 with nightly 20140402 KitKat.
Based loosely on [Tutorial/HOWTO] Convert Your External SD Card from FAT/exFAT to EXT4! (3 ways!)
1. Clear everything out of your external SD card. We're gonna be formatting it so you'll have to backup your data.
2. Boot up into recovery and have a working ADB environment setup on your computer
3. adb shell (Do NOT mount your /storage/sdcard1)
5. Check that you have fdisk and mke2fs installed (Type fdisk --help and mke2fs --help ensure they don't throw up errors)
6. fdisk /dev/block/mmcblk1
7. Type o and Enter to destroy the partition table
8. Type n to create a new partition. Make sure its Primary (p). Select first partition and choose how many cylinders you want to allocate to it.
9. Type n to create your second partition. Again, make sure its Primary (p). Leave cylinder allocation blank to use remainder of space by default.
10. Verify partition layout by typing p to show partition layout.
11. Exit fdisk and save changes by typing w
12. mke2fs -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
13. mke2fs -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
14. reboot
15. Once CM has booted up, check if your external storage partition 1 has been mounted. It should be mounted at /mnt/media_rw/sdcard1
16. Try creating a folder in /mnt/media_rw/sdcard1 and /storage/sdcard1 to test if your read/write permissions are correct.
17. Install DiskInfo from playstore to check if your second partition is visible
18. Once done, install Link2SD and select ext4 when prompted to ask what kind of filesystem your 2nd partition is.
19. Reboot after Link2SD installs scripts.
20. Voila!
Let me know if there are any issues. I modified several files while doing this so not sure if any of them affected.
Should #16 not work, try:
1. Going to /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml and adding media_rw group to the element that only has sdcard_r group in it.
2. Typing mount in Terminal Emulator (su) or adb shell and see whether your partitions are mounted. If you're not sure, post the output out here.
Final mount output (filtered with mmcblk1 or sdcard stuff):
Code:
/dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /data/sdext2 ext4 rw,seclabel,relatime,data=ordered 0 0
/dev/fuse /mnt/shell/emulated fuse rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1023,group_i
d=1023,default_permissions,allow_other 0 0
/dev/block/vold/179:33 /mnt/media_rw/sdcard1 ext4 rw,dirsync,context=u:object_r:
sdcard_external:s0,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,data=ordered 0 0
/dev/fuse /storage/sdcard1 fuse rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1023,group_id=1
023,default_permissions,allow_other 0 0
EDIT 2: *** IMPORTANT!! Do NOT select External in the App2SD option in Link2SD. Otherwise you will not be able to install any apps from the Play Store (Insufficient Storage error)
I use GL to SD on my Slimrom: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.slf.ListglApp
It may not have fancy UI like FolderMount or Link2SD, and it slight complex to use. But it works on per app basis, without re-partition too.
Hi leripe !
I have got the same device and ROM like you and i would like to know if you have found a solution to move apps to the sdcard ?
Thank you in advance, regards.

If it non system apps, you can use GL to SD as I provide the link already above. It works.

Nope, sorry. I tried this tool and it work so never bother to look for another one.
If GL to SD doesn't have the app you want to move, you can manually link the app and the relevant folder at GL to SD settings. After you linked them, at the main page of apps you can tell it to start to move.
This thread shows up on google for me when trying to figure out why minitool partition wizard doesn't detect my phone at all. The guide I'm following says USB-SDcard reader is required but is that really true?? Surely there is a way to mount the SDcard at a low enough level to partition it without addition hardware?? Even if I have to mount it using TWRP recovery or something I would think it's possible. Anyone know?
