Thanks.
I noticed one has system and boot IMG. Just curious when I would ever need those and what exactly are they. Sorry for the questions. I'm comfortable unlocking devices. Flashing custom recoveries and Roms. Still don't understand what the boot and system image contains. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks guys.

Boot is kernel. System is ROM. They are just images.

Hi guys,
I have the ADB and fastboot set up for my Galaxy Nexus with an unlocked bootloader. I've also flashed touch CWM via fastboot. I do NOT have root access.
Would I be able to flash any custom ROMs (like MIUI or Revolution HD) or do I need to be rooted?

Hello everyone,
after using FreeGee to unlock the bootloader of my E975 I have the Nexus 4 bootloader (makoz10i) on my device.
I was just wondering if I could flash the latest version of this bootloader - makoz20i - without messing everything up.
Thanks in advance.

Hello everybody,
I'm used to flashing but I'm not a dev' and I think we are many who could be interested by this :
So I saw this article https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install on how to install Ubuntu Touch on our old but still good galaxy nexus.
And I wonder : is it possible to flash img through recovery or do we have to follow all the tutorial ? because I don't feel very confident about doing it and I also wanted to share it with others

No you cant flash it through recovery. You need to do it with fastboot. It is safe though. You can always go back to android. I believe there is a thread somewhere around here that shows you how to dual boot android and ubuntu.

Huh? I swear I had installed Ubuntu Touch (the first stable version back in November) via recovery, by flashing a global ZIP and a device-specific ZIP.

3 Questions regarding unlocking bootloader
1. Is there a reason why do we unlock bootloader for the Nexus7 (2013)?
We can use custom kernels etc, but anything else?
2. Any implications of unlocking bootloader? I understand for Sony, if you unlock bootloader, you will lose DRM keys, X-Reality, Bravia Engine etc.
How about for Nexus 7 (2013)?
3. Can I still root without unlocking bootloader?
Many thanks in advanced!

thanks Jhal, being in XDA for sometime i know always look for FAQ first.
But only part of my questions were answered.
The part regarding the implications/disadvantages arent answered.
Thanks for your time!
You're welcome. I can't think of any disadvantage to unlocking the bootloader on the Nexus 7. Even if you need to return it under the warranty, you can relock the bootloader. With an unlocked device, you can unroot/reroot and flash custom ROMs. I ran my Nexus 7 stock unrooted for a few days, but then unlocked and rooted. I backed up my stock 4.4.2 system, and then flashed Paranoid Android, PA Gapps, and Supersu.

You can't flash some of the best roms out there, including cyanogenmod or paranoidandroid. For stock based roms should be fine without it.
Don't unlock if you are not going to install custom room, not worth the trouble
Nam Huy Linux http://namhuy.net
Can't root a Nexus 7 without unlocking the bootloader first either. If stock is fine for you then leave it locked. Otherwise fastboot oem unlock.

Hi everyone,
I have a dev edition m9. I updated to marshmallow via OTA earlier today. The update is working fine. I flashed TWRP 2.8.7.0 and that's working fine as well. But when I try to root the system, it gets stuck on the HTC logo. I have tried it with SuperSU 2.46 (stable) and 2.52 (beta). Both times, I had to reboot into recovery, wipe cache and restore the system image backup to get my system back in working state. Please help as I need root access. Thanks.
U have to change bootloader with marshmallow

What does that mean?
Your bootloader is the animation when u power on the device watch the videos on YouTube ...just search nexus 5x root there are a few I know its a different phone than u have but the process will be very similar

It talks about flashing a modified boot. I haven't seen any boot image corresponding to the M9.
U said u just got the ota today ,correct?.... Just keep checking in for it ....I'm sure it'll be available in a week or two
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA Free mobile app
@bigduke$: That's not really the solution for that problem. The M9 doesn't get rooted the same way the Nexus 5x does.
@slvrhwk: You need to use SuperSU 2.65 and TWRP 2.8.7.1-Beta1. Android M needs system-less root that's why your system didn't boot.
