Ice Cream Sandwich & Rogue Recovery Won't Turn On - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

A year ago I had rooted the phone and such and had rogue recovery on it with some ice cream sandwich rom I cannot remember. I lost my job so my phone was left on a table for over a year. I want to use it now, but it does not turn on and I am clueless if its something malfunctioning with the phone or if it has anything to do with these things I did a year ago. It was working fine before I stopped using it.
I left the phone charging overnight (I could see a blinking blue light in the top right so I figured it was working) I woke up and the phone was pretty hot, but not SUPER hot. I hardly even used the phone... it had like 2-3 months of actual casual use before I stopped using it.
Is it just dumpster recycle material now? I've tried removing battery and some things but there isn't much information I can find anywhere.
Thanks for any help.

Have you tried booting into download or recovery? Try that if you can do that, all is not lost. Just flash a one click(if you can only get to Odin) or the Rom, kernel, modem, of choice from recovery.

Being that it was working then sat for a year I would say the battery is shot. You said blinking blue light. Either you have no kernel (unlikely) or your battery is beyond repair. Buy a new battery and get some jellybean on there.

Yeah well I hardly remember anything about these androids and such. I've tried getting into what I assume was rogue recovery by holding volume up and then pressing power ( also tried holding power doing this) and many other combinations. Nothing happens. The blinking blue light is only there when the battery is in. I've tried charging it again and after about 10 minutes the phone itself is REALLY hot. The battery is not hot at all. No idea what is going on. Would I be able to boot the phone with no battery and just directly connected to power to test if its the battery or not? or is this type of phone a no go with that kind of strategy? I've tried it obviously and it does not turn on. It frustrates me how I never even got to use this phone and now I'm screwed it seems.

Do ypu have an external battery charger? If not you can go to sprint (assuming you are on good terms now) and ask them to check the battery for you. I do not think the phone boots without a battery.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium

Well Sprint will probably want to make me pay my way past due bill and crap before even looking at the battery! I'll try to ask one of my android fanatics IRL if hes got an external charger or something.

Blinking blue LED means battery failure. Need a new battery. They are pretty cheap on amazon and ebay. You can either go OEM, or extended.

Let me elaborate on why your battery failed. Lithium Ion batteries have this little annoyance with how they need to be used. Say you use your phone until it dies. Well the battery still has about 20 to 30% left in it, but not enough to fully power the phone on. When the battery sits doing nothing, it will drop till it is completely depleted. This causes the battery to ultimately break, making it almost impossible to charge below 15% and a complete failure comes when it drops all of its charge.
Now don't mistake what I am telling you for what your phone says the charge is at. Your battery will still have a charge even when the phone say 0%, I can also prove this with my phone being modified with an always on LED I installed. I can keep this LED on for a couple days after the battery loses its ability to power the phone. I however never push it too far or I would not be able to charge the battery again.
Basically, you let the battery lose all of its remaining charge, ultimately making it useless.

Not Charging?

Ok so not sure what to do, mostly due to lack of time and patience..
I let my phone die today and when i plugged it in it had the orange led..i let it sit and it changed to an orange and green flash in the led..
i turned it on and the phone was powering but not holding a charge..
How long was it dead before attempting recharge? Did you attempt to use it with this low level of charge before recharging? You may have killed the battery.
it was dead for like 30 sec..the charging light doesnt glow anymore..it just flashes sometimes..
It sounds like the phone allowed the battery to discharge too far, which is a bit disconcerting. Do you have another battery to try?

My wifes phones from what it sounds like did the same thing. only the orange led light shows up while plugged in. Took it to the store and they did not have a phone to replace it with, so are ordering a new phone which will not get here till Thursday. The sales rep let my wife borrow her personal spare phone which is a feature phone...They said it wont effect the data plan... i am nervous and dont trust that we will be able to get the data plan back on the new DINC2 when it gets here on Thursday.
This situation sucks...
I personally have had that weird flashing aswell... although under different circumstances. I was downloading some torrent and saw that the battery was getting low so I plugged it in to my car and about 10min later it started doing that flashing. When I grabbed it the back felt incredibly hot so I disconnected it and turned the phone off. Then I removed the battery and it felt like it was going to burn my hand so I set it down and let it cool off. Afterwards, I put it back in and it was ok again.

It's possible you were putting some very high demands on the device, and did not lighten the load when you plugged it in, asking it to charge an already warm battery. Then again, something in the battery could have shorted.

Help with my e4gt the battery drains 3hr

Where to begin....my phone would last about 9hr before this issues started happening. For some odd reason my indicator LED light won't shut off I had to download an app to turn it off. When I try to turn of the phone It will automatically turn on again but before it does it goes to the charging screen even thought the phone is not plug to an outlet. It all started happening after I used my friends LG charger i'm thinking maybe I damage something.

Judging by the screenies it looks like the battery is to blame. Those spikes are definetly not normal.

Looks like the phone isn't correctly reading the battery.
However, the symptom of the phone going into charging when off when it's not plugged in (phone thinking it's charging) is pretty common with the Samsung Replenish, and is almost always an indicator of a bad charging port. This could also explain the LED not going out (ie charging). We see it in our store alot. Your battery dying in 3 hours would make sense, as the phone isn't charging the battery correctly in this scenario.

Hey kartiel, hope you can figure it the problem. I would be frustrated if I were you. unroot and bring to sprint maybe they will replace the phone

I agree.. it seems to be the charging port on the phone. My wife's phone had a very similar problem. Her screen would turn on by itself, the led light would stay on all day, and battery only lasted about 2 hours. It would always freeze up too once in a while and when you turn it back on, the battery drained like 20% in a span of 5 mins. Her battery stats look very similar to yours, with all the spikes. On top of that, her phone kept going into driving mode or voice talk randomly. Her phone was rooted with the auto root procedure. I wanted to back up her phone with TiB regularly and put on adblock.. but otherwise everything was stock on her phone.
What I ended up doing was a factory reset. That cleared up the freezing issue and the screen turning on and off, but the battery stuff was still acting the same. I did a battery pull over night and cleaned the contacts of the charging port of the phone with a very small q-tip and toothpick. I also cleaned the battery terminals as well for good measure. Put the battery back on the phone and charged to full while the phone was off. First thing I did when I turned on the phone was to download the battery calibrator app and run the calibration. Her phone has been back to normal now for almost 3 weeks.

Are you in a damp/humid area? I know my phone did that sometimes too during humid summer days. It's completely fine in any other condition though, especially during this colder winter.

i'm not in a damp/humid area, my wife and I have the same phone. Mine has been okay with minimal issues. Although now that I think about it, she did spill some water on the table with her phone near by a week before her phone start acting up. She had a TPU case which protected it from most of the water, but maybe some of it got in through the headphone jack or charging port??
to the OP: maybe you can try this battery calibration method as well. Some people have reported success with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312273

Battery Fully Drained - Warning Sign

So today my battery was draining pretty quickly and I just let my phone die. And right now it's charging, but I can't turn it on. The screen has a symbol of the battery icon and a warning sign. Is this a bad sign? Anyone ever get this?
Pull your battery and leave it out for about 10 minutes while you make coffee. Put it back in and it should start just fine assuming you have charged it. Also I recommend charging directly on wall charger, not USB plugged into computer.
If that doesn't work, hold the volume button up while holding the power button down. Just keep holding them. This will eventually open your recovery. Then click select "reboot phone" and hit power.

I've had this happen to me about a week ago, I wake up to find my phone dead and not charging. Luckily I have a spare (from my old one that was replaced) so I've been using it.
I've left it out for a while, but no luck. Tried booting from recovery and stuff, but it just turns on, doesn't charge then shuts off. I haven't done a whole lot to fix it, been busy but I think if I try again and let it sit on the charger for a bit, it may just be fine.
Edit: Went ahead and swapped the batteries then set in on the charger (wall) . Not showing the triangle, hopefully it charges just fine.
That shows when the battery is fully drained. The phone needs to charge for a bit to have enough power to turn on. It's the E4GT version of the iphone/ipad/ipod touch image when the battery is fully dead and just a little lightning bolt is showing under the battery when you charge it.

Left is the fully dead screen. (just like the battery with warning sign on E4GT)
Right is normal charging screen. (like normal batter with dots under it on E4GT)

Yeah I thought so. The weird thing is, I've been draining my battery quite often, since I've been doing ROM Beta testing so I wanted to get real battery percentages and such. One time, I even turned on the phone quite a few times after it would shut off just to make sure it was completely dead, and once it was, it never showed the triangle. This happened randomly during the night while I was asleep, with fully or nearly full battery life.
I'm sure it's no biggie, which is why I wasn't worried. Well I had it charge up a bit, and booting it up, everything seems fine. Either way I have a spare battery in case this one goes bad.
Charged it for around 5 hours and still getting this error. I'm just gonna leave the battery out for like 30 minutes and start charging it again. Just to make sure, this is a battery problem and not a phone problem, right? I would hate to be bricking my phone again xD

[Q] Something Completely Strange... Seriously

Ok, So i have been pretty cautious with my GNII, but finally ran into my first issue....
I hate to say it, but im on Jedi X9 (although with custom theme, if that makes a difference) and after having absoulely zero issues thus far... i finally had my first Ohhhh S***** moment. Here is some Background...
After trying for almost an hour to get UPnPlay to read my Laptop (battery readings went from 13% to 6%) and finally deciding that my phone wasn't picking up the Laptop because the Wifi needed to be reset... and of course, after reseting the wifi, UPnPlay read my Laptop like a charm... Anyways, I decided to go smoke a cig and let my phone charge for a sec while i was doing so, and then this happened....
As i go to plug my phone into the stock charger, nothing happens... try to hit the power button.... nothing... unplug and tap power button nothing... try to switch sockets (top to bottom).... Nothing... change wall outlets completely... nothing.... Go into a different room and plug into a different outlet (in a different room)... nothing.... finally (after taking off my Otterbox-Defender Case) and pulling the battery... I put battery back in and plug phone into the wall... It starts to charge....
Still havent turned the phone back on....ok, just did and everything seems to be working fine (no bootloop)... recieved alerts (unread Emails/SMS/MMS)... but wow that was sorta a trip... NOT SURE WHY MY PHONE WASN"T CHARGING FOR THAT LITTLE INSTANCE OR WHY IT WENT FROM ~6% to 0% within what had to be just a few seconds (unless i was just abducted by aliens and had that whole time-lapse issue)....
Anyone else experience anything like this yet... ON ANY PRIOR DEVICE EVER???
I think I did once on my s2. But the phone was really dead and I got scared -_- . Since then I dont like it when the phone reaches 0% on my phone.

Same thing happen to me on GSII. Long story short I was using my phone while it was charging, but it was still declining. I didn't think much of it until i was on zero for awhile. I wondered stupidly how long it could stay on zero while charging. Whole scenario was probably 20 min. Like an idiot I forgot and pulled the cord out on accident because I had also just put a file on and it instantly shut off. The phone was like vibrating weird. it would flash but turn off. I left it on a charger for hours, waiting waiting. And it just turned on. Lesson learned... Speaking of, just looked over and forgot I came on here because my GNII is stuck in bootloop hahaha. Gotta go
It is a good idea to watch your battery charge on modified ROMs and not allow the phone to go bellow 9 %..
That has always been my rule.
Keep the phone on the charger whenever you can, and also allow the devise to display the percentage battery
on the taskbar. This will allow you to keep an eye on how much energy is left.

I usually let mine drains till 2-5% and then charge. I've been doing this since HD2 days and I never had any issue + getting great battery life.

Sudden Death?

Hi
I was out with my GF, and all of a sudden her phone just turned off, it was kind of weird cus the phone had like 70% percent of battery.
The phone does not want to turn on, I'b tried charging it cus something similar happened to my nexus 4 recently, it shoed full battery and it went dead, and had a red light blinking, turns out it was displaying the % wrong and it was empty, but her phone does not have any light at all, it charged for a few hours and nothing, tried different chargers, plugin it into the computer to see if it got recognized and nothing.
she has a bone stock phone, not even rooted, what could be wrong? the phone its like a brick, no signs of life :/ :crying:
Can you force it into Recovery or Download mode? No vibration, charge indicator, anything? Maybe you could flash the original firmware again.
Also, look at your battery, is it physically abnormal in any way? like a bubble or enlarged tumor-looking thing on it? That would signify a bad battery.
I'd say if its totally stock and especially if it's under warranty, call T-mo up and get them to replace it.

EDIT: After letting it charging last night at least today it shows signs of life.
it powers up but only shows Galaxy SIII screen and then black, it does vibrates, and when i put battery in it vibrates and attempts to power up. It goes to Download mode for like 5 seconds and then it kind of faints again to the black screen. Im suspecting the sudden death im reading everywhere?
Download all the necessary files for odin and have odin up and ready to flash stock.
Maybe if u can keep it in dload mode long enuff to flash stock, you can get things square again. Thats all I could suggest, unless this is hardware failure.
