Hello all,
A little info before the question:
I recently flashed clockwork and switched my ROM to CM10. I have a 16GB MD4 SPH-L710. The flash went swimmingly and I love the rom. however, I've been looking for a way to flash a custom PRL to my phone and I've been trying various methods listed in several topics to no avail, so I'm ready to do a NAND backup, flash to stock to update it, and then restore the NAND.
If I understand my readings correctly, this will keep the PRL?
The root (hah) of my problem is this.. I forgot to make a NAND of my stock rom before I flashed CM10.
so I've been searching for a stock update.zip I can flash in clockwork. Alternatively, I need to make sure I can use an ODIN image and be fine. I don't want to lose CWM and SU unless I have to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
If I read this right, I can use the image found here to flash stock image, then flash clockwork, then boot to OS, reboot to recovery and create NAND backup for future use, boot into OS to flash my custom PRL, then restore my CWM NAND backup.
Will this process keep the PRL?
Thanks in advance!
No just find Freezas stock rom, it's a pre rooted stock md4 rom. You can find it in the Sprint S3 development section.

Yeah, but he wants to flash a custom rom. With the stock rom you have to flash the prl write mod. He should just do the following:
1. Read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880781
2. Probably easier to download a rom with it built in...this is just one example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2116531
3. Boot into recovery
4. Make a backup (nandroid of your current CM setup)
5. After the backup, wipe cache, dalvik, system, data
6. Install the zip you downloaded in step 2
7. Update PRL normally or custom PRL with the instructions in step 1
8. After phone has rebooted, make sure the correct PRL is present
9. Reboot back into CWM
10. Wipe cache, dalvik, system, data
11. Restore the nandroid you just made
12. Reboot
13. Phone should be how it was
14. Read and search the forums!!!!
15. Read and youtube to make sure you know how to nandroid properly
16. Teach me how to place items in correct numerical sequence
17. No need to flash the return to stock/reset counter if you just want to update your PRL
he can do that with Freezas rom or any MD4 based rom. MOAR is a an MD4 based stock rom as well with customized theming. Makes no difference. He could flash MOAR, he could flash TPR it doesn't make one iota of a difference.
He stated he wanted the stock rom and was trying to flash via CWM so he doesn't have to flash stock image via odin and loose root. My intent was to explain that is not necessary, he could use any of the stock based roms in development and flash via recovery. I suggested Freezas rom because it is stock rooted and he could create a nandroid of that and have his stock nandroid.
Which is his Intent to have a nandroid of stock which he forgot to do when he rooted. His intent is not to flash a custom rom. He's already accomplished that a while back.

But he sounds like he wants to flash a custom PRL. Not just update the Sprint PRL. You can't flash a custom PRL on the stock rom without the PRL write mod. I just suggested MOAR so he wouldn't have to dig around for the PRL write mod. Just based on his comments, it seems like step-by-step instructions would help him more. I mean, he was ready to flash a zip to take his phone back to out of the box stock in order to try this. Yes, Freeza's rom will work, but he probably wants to flash a modified PRL, which you also need the PRL write mod in order to do with that rom. If you want, I can edit my message to say download Freeza's stock and boot, then go back into CWM and flash the PRL Write mod. I was just saving him a few steps. That's why I said there are many roms with this built in, here is one example.
No its cool, just didn't want him to think he had to go back to stock unrooted. Hopefully he gets it done with yours and my advise:thumbup::thumbup:

Cool. You said my laundry list of steps in one sentence.
thanks!
I looked at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880781 and some other threads and tried these methods, the scripts too enable diag modem mode do not work for CM10.1 anymore.
Thanks for the other advice!! I'll try one of these roms. Anything to save me a few steps is awesome. Plust I can NAND go back and forth whenever I want
Why doesn't the PRL write mod work with CM, does it only support MD4/stock-based roms?
I'm very familiar with NAND backups/restores and custom rom flashing.. I'll make a new backup and try flashing MOAR on my lucnch today if I can.

Cm just doesn't support it. You can do it, but it is an involved process and just easier to flash touchwiz rom. You'll find some custom touchwiz roms here don't support prl update either. Yeah, but just make a nand and go to town. I had the best luck finding a custom prl when I turned data off. It wouldn't stick otherwise
I went through this process twice and the PRL would not stick, even in the MOAR rom. That rom is sweet though, and it had the most beautiful setup I've seen lol.
I just might be giving up on this PRL stuff at this point unless someone has some tips.
Thanks for the help!

You need to use the search feature buddy.
If you can root your phone you can find a ROM.
And if you have no idea what a kernel or a ROM and which goes with what, I'd suggest staying away from flashing for now and look up tutorials and videos.

Every rom comes with a kernel built in.
You need a custom recovery for your phone (Clockwork Mod or TWRP)
In recovery factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format system, flash rom, flash gapps (Google apps needed) wipe cache and dalvik again and reboot.
If any of this seems overwhelming read read read. Watch a YouTube video on installing a recovery for your phone. Or a video on flashing a rom.
Phones are bricked by not understating what they are doing and downloading the wrong files.

As long as you made a backup in twrp, you should be all set to go ahead and wipe and flash
Be sure to have the rom and gapps zips placed on your phone before starting.

When you wipe, you're essentially creating a clean slate for your new operating system to run on. Making a backup will allow you to restore your device in the event you run into any issues in the future. The backup will restore whatever rom you were running when you created the backup. For example, the backup you already made, when restored, will place touchwiz (stock) back on your phone. Once you flash a rom, if you were to make a backup again, it would backup your system with that particular rom. Then you would have 2 backups: 1 that has stock and 1 that has aokp or whatever it was you were running at the time of backup.
You can also copy and paste these backups onto your computer to have in case anything ever happens to your phone.
I would read up on all these processes and procedures a little more before you begin.

Deviant Xone (linked in my sig). Awesome 4.2.2 ROM.
If you're going to any AOSP rom, be sure to update your recovery to the latest!
Also - Create a 0 folder in the root of your internal storage and move all of your files into /sdcard/0 (and I mean everything, files, folders, etc.) When you boot into latest recovery, it'll treat the sdcard/0 as your sdcard root folder. Once you flash an AOSP based rom, it will always use sdcard/0 as the root so if you create the 0 folder prior to flashing, you'll have all of your internal memory accessible.

Hey six3onei,
I'm assuming you just got the notification for the OTA (Over-The-Air) update. The newest version of the Stock Rom is MD4 which is still 4.1.2. Android version 4.2.x probably won't come out for your phone for a couple of months (that's my guess with no data to back it up other than my own intuition).
As far as upadating, you actually don't have to apply the OTA to get the latest and greatest for our phone. All you have to do is flash Freeza's Stock Rooted Rom (You'll want the DeOdex MD4 Rom). It'll give you the most up-to-date Stock Rom with Root. I've linked and quoted a previous post I made which will give you directions to flash it. Also, CNexus has done a great guide about OTAs over in the general sub-forum. I suggest giving that a look-through.
Also, just a note on the flashing sequence below: In step 4 below, if you're coming from a stock Rom and you're going to a stock Rom, all you have to do is wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache. If you're going to a different Rom, it's best to do a full wipe (in my opinion).
Ok, let's start at the very beginning (it's a very good place to start).
Before we get started, I'm going to make the following assumptions:
You successfully rooted your phone through Odin.
You currently have a custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM).
You have a Rom you'd like to flash on either your internal storage or your SDcard (I'd recommend the SDcard, but that's your prerogative).
If either of the first two is not true, I'd recommend going back to qbking77's thread and check out the videos on how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery.
If number 3 above is not true, download a ROM (nor someone new to flashing/custom Roms, I'd recommend Freeza's stock rooted Rom, as it's identical to stock TW, but just with Root). Once you download a Rom, check it's md5sum to verify that it's a good download. Copy the file to your SD card and get ready to flash (make sure you have decent battery life left, I try to keep at least 50% or more when flashing Roms, although it shouldn't take too long.
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, chances are it had gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).
Hope this helps!

That's right, dirty flashing should work fine. If you're noticing any major issues (FCs, reboots, etc), you might want to use Titanium Backup to back up your important stuff and do a clean flash. But hopefully the dirty flash will be good.

As an aside: yesterday I helped a friend root his GS3 and realized I'm much better at explaining things here on XDA than I am in real life. I kept jumping ahead of myself and trying to explain about wiping /system before I even explained what a custom Recovery is. I should've just asked him to post a question "how do I root" and I could've done a better job explaining it, haha.
Well, first let me say this, I am a complete Noob flashing Roms and that stuff
I would like to install S3Rx (Dont want Cyanogenmod or any other roms, I just want a modified stock rom) as I am running UVUENC2 unrooted and that is the only rom with support for it. Could you please answer me this questions?
a) I have downloaded the rom already (The 4-5-14 build based on UVUENC2) how can I root and install CWM or TWRP? (Previously had an Ace S5830M)
b) Will I lose my network or something like that? Do I have to flash a modem or something like that?Do I have to make a backup of some files for having a smooth experience (I dont need to backup apps, got the phone yesterday)?
c) How can I install it correctly? Previously I just wiped cache, data and dalvik cache, do I have to make more wipes?
Well, thats it, thanks for your help
a. You Flash CWM or TWRP using Odin. Then Flash S3RX that you have downloaded. This process does not need Root. (Yeah Surprise!)
b. Don't think so. Make sure to follow all the instructions in the S3RX thread to the letter. Do make a Nandroid using CWM or TWRP you flashed. Do so before flashing S3Rx. Also make a backup of your NV Data. Search this forum for instructions to NVBACKUP.
c. You need to do Factory Reset then flash the Rom then wipe Dalvik and Cache.

Well it is way easier than I thought, thanks Perseus71! Only thing I dont like about this rom is that it is WAY too big but I can solve that in Aroma Installer. Could you please post a link for steps about how to backup NV Data or EFS Folder? The ones that I found are difficult and I want to get this done with as fast as I can.
EDIT: I found an easy tutorial made by member <:GeeK:> it is in the i747 section but it will work with the T999 right? Also, I have to restore it like he says AFTER I flash the Rom? Thanks for your help
Using Terminal Emulator enter this.
su
reboot nvbackup
Done!

I don't have root Access, I only flashed the recovery as Perseus71 told me to. I tried that in my old man's International Galaxy Note (which is rooted) and it told me an error NVBACKUP not found
The note is older and it may not be an available function. Only do this if you find confimation in a devices forum. It was tried on a Note3 and it hardbricked! Once you flash your rom you will be rooted. That's when I suggest you run this. Itll back up your nv data on-device, so don't expect to see any output to sd. But it will auto restore if corruption is ever detected.
Hey all, haven't been keeping up on roms and updates for a while... I've been running JellyBomb rom since the first week the phone came out and had all the .zip's of MC2 / MA7 / MA5 / LK8 / LJC / LJ1 modems to run in TWRP. I got the zip for MK4 / NE2 yesterday and loaded the MK4 after a backup for safety, just looking to see if I'm safe to try the NE2 modem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2139889
I'm also seeing all the 4.4.4 rom's and I have a few questions, goomanager looks to be out of date these days and I'm still on TWRP V.2.5.0.1, I see on their site they are up to 2.8 (although I only see .zip for 2.7) for the Note 2 and still suggest to use goomanager. Can I just grab the .zip and load in TWRP recovery? I've got a fresh backup, so would I be able to go back to this backup from the 4.4.4 roms? Is it as easy as latest version of TWRP then wipe phone and load a 4.4.4 rom, or am I missing steps?
Thanks for any help:good:

It's safe to flash any modem for any rom including the NE2 modem. The 2.8 version of TWRP is linked in the thread here in development section. @jlmancuso posted a fixed version of 2.8 towards the last couple of pages in the thread so search for it because it's NOT on the site. It works fine but you can safely use Phil's recovery 6.07.9 or the newest version from his website (linked from the thread here in development) if you have any doubts or issues using it. Also be aware of the bootloader issue which causes the phone to not charge when powered off. If you have this problem on a MK4 or NE2 based TW rom then you will need to update your bootloader. This has been covered in the Community ROM thread. @jlmancuso posted a flashable bootloader in his thread on one of the last few pages. That pretty much sums it up.
FYI. Concerning nandroid backups, you must create and restore the backup from the same recovery. It is highly recommended to use Phil's recovery 6.07.9 or newest version for backups because TWRP backups are not cross compatible. So if you haven't done so already, use Phil's for your nandroid backup and go over the backup settings to include/exclude the items you want to include or exclude in your backup.

Awesome thanks!
looks like I've got a bunch of reading to do then... everything has changed. I grabbed Philz touch 6.48.4-l900.zip, looks to be the latest/last update. I'll look into that flashable bootloader next.
I may just stay with jellybomb as the phone just works so well. After I do a fresh backup with Philz recovery can I go to a 4.4.4 rom and back to the backup of older 4.1.2 jellybomb rom? Anyway, thanks for the info and pointing me in the right direction! I'll read up and report back if need be.

Yes you can flash back to an older pre 4.4 TW rom or any AOSP rom. Just stick with Phil's recovery because it's compatible with both TW and AOSP. I like the ui of TWRP better but reliability is a priority and Phil's does it all best. Good luck.
If you have ever taken the MK4 (4.3) or NE2 (4.4) OTA then your bootloader should be fine. If you've never taken the MK4 or NE2 OTA then you will most likely have the no charge issue when powered off (phone will reboot instead of charging when you plug in the charger while powered off). so you will have two choices: find and flash the bootloader that @jlmancuso posted in his Community ROM thread OR flash a stock unrooted rom with flash count reset and take all the OTA's until you are up to NE2 KK 4.4... then odin flash Phil's recovery (same version as mentioned above but its a md5.tar file) and make sure you uncheck the reboot device option in Odin and immediately pull the battery once it finishes flashing. Then reboot straight to recovery and immediately go into Phil's settings and select the re-root phone option. From that point you will be stock 4.4 unrooted WITH KNOX.. Next you will need to download and install SuperSU from the Google Play Store then immediately open SuperSU and let it remove KNOX from your phone (unless you want it). Then you can reboot to recovery and flash whatever rom you want.

Yeah no over the air updates on my phone and I found that fix/thread on the community ROM encase I do run into that issue. I did swap over to that latest/last version of Philz Recovery and all is well, also ran a fresh backup, also with you on the UI but like you said as long as it works.
Let me ask you this, after I update the bootloader to NE2 that bootlader will still work with my backup of 4.1.2?
So does the procedure go - load 4.4.4 ROM/wipe and factory data reset in recovery > update bootloader in recovery > done?
Looking at the 4.4.4 Dirty Unicorns or the 4.4.4 Liquidsmooth , just want it to run solid.
Again thanks for the help/info!

Is that right? or did you mean I'd be stock 4.4 rooted with KNOX? If I remember you can't run SuperSU unrooted, right?
So far I grabbed these zip's:
gapps-kk-20140606-signed.zip
NE2-screen-mirroring-fix.zip
tw-4.4.2-power-off-charge-fix.zip
Is that NE2 screen mirroring fix needed most of the time too?
I ran a titanium backup, I pulled the titanium backup and full backup using Phil'z recovery to my computer. I'd like to clear internal and external without loosing root as internal data is cluttered/full, is their a procedure to do that or do I need to do a factory data reset then reroot?
Thanks tx_dbs_tx:good:
