My Desire was rooted before with a custom ROM. I've flashed back the original firmware, therefore the root was gone.
I followed the tutorial at this thread but I get stuck when I want to boot into recovery. The standard holding power and volume down procedure didn't work so I used ADB to boot into recovery. My device rebooted, but I get the red triangle and after that the 'Can't open /cache/recovery/command' error. I found out this means that the recovery isn't proparly installed.
When I use ADB to flash clockworkmod recovery Ithe message '< waiting for device >' remain standing. My Desire is in the HTC Sync modus, I see My HTC in windows device manager.
What is the next step to take? I've bricked an tablet before so I want to do the right thing.
Are you s-off? Also you use fastboot to flash the recovery, not adb.

Good point, I was forgotten all about s-off and on, it was a long time ago that I rooted my Desire.
I think I am not, beacause flashing the ROM of HTC also gives me a non-rooted phone. I'll check it this evening. Is using the tool from htcdev.com/bootloader the best way to become s-off?

No that will unlock your bootloader, not give you s off. Use revolutionary.
I found out I'm s-off, after I flashed clockworkmod recovery I used unrevoked to root. The rooting didn't succeed, I get the message 'failed to get root. Is your firmware to new?
I was on RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release, I have flashed an older stock ROM from the list on this page (1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984), and will try it again.

After you flashed recovery, there was no need to use unrevoked. All you had to do was boot into recovery and flash superuser.zip file. That would have rooted your existing rom.
However, what is your ultimate aim? If you want a ROM, you can simply flash the optimal hboot for the ROM (optional but recommended), boot into recovery, full wipe and flash the rom. The ROM will already be pre-rooted.

You're completly right, I was somewhatconfused, it has been a while since I last flashed a ROM, I was to much happy with Oxy ZM. :silly:
Everything is ok now, I've flashed succesfully. Thanks.

How are you flashing?
Off thou flash it through recovery your just fake flashing it. You need to actually flash it through fastboot but you need S-Off. There is a way to do it without fastboot. Just Google it. You use the terminals emulator instead. No idea if it works though
Sent from CM7
as meaple has said, its only a fake flash, so it doesnt actually flash it.
i couldnt get it to work through the terminal method either due to protections (s-on) but i have now s-off, so it let me flash via fastboot first time
Can I do it with unrevoked or do I have to s-off? (assuming i won't make it with the terminal)

yes you can do it with unrevoked, but you would have to unroot first, and then go unrevoked with custom recovery

Zip is not what you need. You need to get an img file of the recovery you want to flash. You can then do that via Fastboot or Android Flasher etc. Flashing the zip from wherever is still just fake flashing.

No. you don't have to un root. You can flash unrevoked on a rooted device
If you are s on, use unrevoked. Else use the following from fast boot:
fastboot flash recovery cwm_.img

ok, i downgraded from 1.72 to 1.34, ive got perm. root and want to install a custom ROM, problem is clockwork wont backup my current (stock) ROM, it reboots and freezes at the white htc screen.
anyone shed any light on why i cant backup?
Did you boot into recovery and try there? Did the process complete and then freeze?

from Rom manager if i attempt to backup, it reboots but freezes at the white htc screen.
from bootloader - recovery it freezes at the white htc screen.
Sounds like your recovery isn't properly installed. I assume you used ROM manager to install it? If so try to manually flash CWM using flash_image
Use this thread for a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902493
You can get the latest version of CWM (currently 3.0.2.4) here: http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/02/clockwork-recovery-image.html just scroll down to the link that says "HTC G2"
After you flash try to manually go into recovery and see if you get past the HTC screen.
still the same, freezes at the white htc screen, she'll just have to get used to using a stock ROM.
What does flash_image report? Does it seem to work or does it throw an error?
You have verified you have S-OFF?
You may still be able to flash the ENG HBOOT and flash recovery from there using fastboot.

Well generally I wouldn't recommend the engineering HBOOT for casual users (I don't use it myself) but it does have an advantage in that you can flash recovery from fastboot.
I would do that next.

Hey XDA-Dudes,
I just got my Desire HDand I wanted to put a custom ROM on it because the stock ROM is pretty crappy.
Now I saw in the recovery that this Phone is alread S-Off and the lazy noob I am I don't want to downgrad and root my phone just to install clockwork recovery (I'm on 2.2.1 Build 1,75,xxxxxx).
So can I use my stock recovery to flash a third party ROM?
And how do I do it?
Edit: I want to flash to CM7 if it's important.
gingerbreak is able to perm root your build. (install it from your sd card, and then run it)
it may error out and say something went wrong, its ok, reboot the device, and you're now probably rooted.
download rom manager from market and if the perm. root succeeded then use it to flash cwm recovery.
Did it but after the reboot I get stuck on this screen...

you have radio S-Off, not ENG S-Off.
where it says "SHIP" it should say "ENG" instead.
Only then will you be able to flash cwm recovery.
Right now all you can do is flash different stock roms using the RUU via the pc, or PD98IMG off the sd.
Okay thanks,
I'll guess I'll go 1.32 and root afterwards to install crm.
Hi.
While back I ran Revolutionary tool to S-off and root + CWM recovery.
Recently I ran official 2.3 RUU and used stock ROM. Now I want to try ICS, but I don't have CWM anymore. Revolutionary hboot and S-off is still ok. Tried running Revolutionary tool again, but it says I'm already S-off and tries to install CWM, but fails. Tried to install CWM manually through fastboot, but it hangs on sending file. I can still see the device with "fastboot devices".
Since I used a RUU, I don't have root access anymore.
Any idea on how to flash CWM?

The first step:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
Download recovery image and flash it via fastboot, or using some flasher.
Then like you did before flash Superuser .zip:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
After that you'll have root access and you can flash 4ext recovery as well.

"Tried to install CWM manually through fastboot, but it hangs on sending file. I can still see the device with "fastboot devices"."
So that don't work for me, sorry. Seems I can't write to recovery partition. Didn't work with the Revolutionary tool either. The only thing I can think of, that could work, is if the Revolutionary tool could see the device as untouched by the tool, and start the process from the beginning.
Did you try with erase recovery command, and then flash recovery?
If that doesn't work, 2.3 RUU and start from scratch.

Hey all,
So I upgraded to a Droid DNA a couple of months ago, so I decided to root my OG Droid Incredible (SLCD).
I followed the guide here: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488351) to the letter. When I got to the step where I ran unrevoked, it flashed ClockWorkMod recovery, but didn't finish the process. So what happened is now I have ClockWorkMod recovery, and a Stock ROM that doesn't have Root access. (I downloaded a couple of different root checkers from the market and I got "no root access" results".
I tried flashing the stock recovery using the PB31IMG.zip method, but in HBOOT my phone won't recognize the file on my Micro SDcard, even though it's on the root, and properly named.
Can anyone help me get my phone completely rooted, or at least back to stock-stock so I can use a different method?
P.S I did check all MD5 sums, and the phone still works perfectly....it's just in a weird "limbo" state of rooted or not.
Thanks!

If you have cwm flashed then just flash superuser http://dinc.does-it.net/Superuser/SuperUser_3.1.1.zip, thru cwm. Then you will be rooted. Also remember to install busybox from the market.
Alternativley you could just flash a rom of your choosing, as roms come pre rooted and with busybox.

Boot to hboot (vol down + power), it should say at the top. Give me all the info there. You may need to reformat your sdcard fat32 to get the ruu to work. Try going to menu settings applications manage applications all tab find superuser and clear its data. Then open superuser go to preferences and select binary update.

I'm guessing my bootloader is still locked then.
I've did reformat my sdcard when I was going to do the RUU but it still didn't work , but I will try that again anyway.
Cleared SU's data and did the binary update, no change. Doesn't recognize that busybox is installed, even though it's installed. Does BB have to be flashed? Because I DL'd busybox from the market.
Thanks for all the help so far!

Alright,
So I unlocked successfully, flashed su.zip, reflashed CWM recovery, and got to the busy box step.
I'm using jrummy's installer from the market, and it's telling me I have root access. But when I try to install it, it doesn't work. It just sits there "installing busybox". I also used a rootchecker app and that one says I still don't have root access, even though the busybox installer says I do. Superuser also tells me I don't have root access when I go to update the binaries.
