[Q] Free 3g after ICS installation (rooted) - Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660

Hello there,
So, last night, I decided that I should install ICS onto my Samsung Galaxy Gio s5660m. I've had my phone rooted (Gingerbread 2.3.6) for some amount of months now; ClockworkMod Recovery was also installed; and finally, ICS and CWM9 was just added last night. I have had absolutely zero problems with the phone upgrading process and zero problems with the actual new format of everything; which is great! However, when I was completing the android set-up (which you do after a phone has been reset or newly purchased), I noticed something that was not there before the upgrade.
IMPORTANT: My service provider is Bell. My current phone plan consist of the basics (Free WIFI, free incoming, unlimited text, free calls after 6pm 'til 7am, etc).
After the set-up, I restored my apps and I proceeded to browse the internet; however, I didn't connect to my home's wireless internet. Then, I noticed that there was the "3g" connection bar in the notifications bar. I did NOT have 3g on my phone. I had no data on my plan whatsoever. But suddenly, after the installation, I had 3g data.
I looked at my settings and saw "Data usage", I clicked on it, and viewed all this data stuff that I didn't have before.
So after all this pointless and/or relevant information, my question is: Did upgrading my phone to ICS Android 4.0.4. give me FREE 3g data? or will I have to pay for it somehow...!?
I literally have zero idea of what my bill will look like at the end of this month because I don't know if this is free or not. And, of course it shouldn't be, but here's my reasoning; my phone did NOT come with 3g data; my plan does NOT consist of 3g data; and I've NEVER had 3g. So if my phone is listed without 3g data, in the system and on paper...is this...free!?
Thanks

[Q] Perhaps a Custom Rom for Pageplus?

Sounds like a silly request... but see if my train of thought makes any sense.
Background: I have an evo running on pageplus. I've followed the tut's, and had sporadic 1xRTT data working. I also tested running the phone using the verizon (pp) setup for mobile profiles, being simply one profile rather than the three required for it to connect to data.
What I've discovered (using the debug tool ##DEBUG#) is that using the three data profiles, the phone never authenticates for EVDO, and thus, stays at 1X, but the data does work. Using one profile, the phone does authenticate, but the connection never actually starts. I've read that it is because of the way the sprint provisioning works. Needless to say, at 1X battery life is horrendous.. as the phone is constantly trying to authenticate with EVDO cell bands. With EVDO and 1 profile, battery life is fantastic, but there's no data stream.
SO... I'm not sure if the final step of data startup (where the phone checks to see if it is using a sprint mobile data or verizon mobile data) is part of the ROM, or coded somehow into the radio firmware (or both).
I was thinking of trying to port a rom from, say, an incredible or Eris (any VZW phone).. to see if it'll actually start data with true 3G.
I figure XDA is the best place to ask.. these forums have been indispensable to me for all my phone nerding needs. =-)
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Bueller.. anyone? anyone? Frye?
I'd really love to flash CM9 or an ICS ROM on my Page Plus carried Evo4G, I had it flashed on when I went through Sprint but, what precautions should Itake and is it even possible? Sorry for the bump, I searched and searched and couldn't find info about this since Feb so I'm finally asking

Data drop after changing data source

After having my Galaxy Nexus for a few weeks I'd like to share my experiences with 'possible' data connectivity issues.
Firstly,
Upon first activating my phone at an official Verizon store I noticed that I lost data and voice services for almost 20 minutes after the phone was first activated. Toggling of 3G/4G, Airplane mode, and even rebooting (battery pull) would not fix the problem... It eventually just started working and has been fairly reliable ever since.
On the second day of owning the phone I unlocked / rooted... Still using the stock rom, antenna, and kernel though.
Secondly,
I've started to notice that every time I switch data sources.... For instance
*Turning off Wifi when connected to an AP
*Turning off 4G services
I'll completely lose data connectivity for a period of seconds; no longer than a minute (all gray reception bars). However, I can still make calls and send texts. My question is, is this behavior normal for the device? I've never owned a 4G device before so I'm ignorant to the matter. I'm simply inquiring as if this is a sign of a faulty antenna VZW is going to owe me a brand new device (not some refurbished crap either...). If this is typical, then I suppose it's just the nature of the beast. Either way, I've love to hear from others regarding their experiences.... Thanks!
Regards,
-Doug
When I had the thunderbolt data would drop in and out when switching from 3/4G and from wifi.
when you are switching from wifi to 4g/3g, it has to change your IP address, as its a different network. 4g to 3g viceversa it has to switch what frequency it is talking on, and reestablish communication with your carrier. switching data source will always drop data during the switch.
some later software upgrades have, and will reduce the time between switches, but there will always be some form of drop

MetroPCS blocking data on flashed phones

I can confirm that MetroPCS is blocking flashed phones from using their 3G data network as of today, November 5, 2012. I had my Epic 4G slider flashed to Metro around 9 months ago. 3G worked up until today. I let my service lapse (for all of 12 hours) and after I paid to have it reconnected, my 3G no longer worked properly. It is actually still connected to the Metro 3G network and 3G shows in the top bar, but the only webpage accessible is a page titled "metropcs_tethering_message" which states:
"Per the Terms and Conditions of Service, Tethering / Mobile Hotspot is not currently supported. Please visit --- for terms and conditions of use."
To be clear, I am not tethering or using the phone as a hotspot... just trying to surf with the phone itself. The days of flashing to MetroPCS and using data seem to be over. I wonder if it has anything to do with their impending merge with T-Mobile?
Time for me to find another inexpensive call/text/data solution.
[email protected] MetroPCS!
Its been like that ever since they blocked tethering.. some cities were opted out from 3g before tethering was blocked. Requesting the desktop version of a site on a metro phone makes that same message appear. It's likely to be an easy workaround but worth the trouble? Certainly not. I suggest you take a look at the virgin mobile guide in my sig.

Well, an interesting development...
After buying a new (to me) GSM sim-based phone (LG Optimus G2X) and signing up with SimpleMobile, I was prepping my Epic 4G slider for sale and re-flashed my rom to the same custom rom I had been using for many months (ThunderHawk EG22 with Nubernel 2.6.35.7 kernel). After I did this, my data connection started working again. Might not stick, but it's been on for a couple hours now.
Now, this wasn't some glitch or bug in my system that caused the data connection to stop working as stated in my original post. I confirmed with MetroPCS that they were actively blocking my data connection, so it wasn't something wrong with my phone. However, after reflashing the rom, it works again! I'm still selling the phone though and moving on from GhettoPCS.
I'm posting this so anyone else who's had their data connection blocked can try reflashing their rom (even the same rom, apparently) to try to get their data connection back.
But once again, [email protected] MetroPCS for blocking flashed phones! Why do they care where we get our hardware to use on their shhitty service?

Click to collapse
That may be the placebo effect, many outdated Epic Roms improperly displayed 3g icon when it was in fact 1x.. you should do a speedtest and verify its Evdo Rev A or Evdo RevB and not 1x..

Please, are you joking right?
You can have 3G on but you may not have 3G contract with Bell.
'So what?' you should say.
Here in Italy with my provider (Vodafone IT), if you connect with mobile data (as you do) without a contract (as you do), you pay 5 euros for 500 mb of internet traffic.
Kinda expensive.
Trying to saying in a better way.
You have the ability to connect to mobile data with your phone. (Just check on 'Mobile data' in 'Data Usage')
The way you pay it, it's your matter.
So I suggest you to deactivate it and check out how much did you pay. Cheers.

No Mobile Data

Hi, its my first post on the Z1C forum.
I just got one yesterday to replace my Nexus 5 and am accounting a few things I need help with since I am new to the xperia line of phones.
So my phone looks like this (for data) however I can't browse anything. I have mobile data enabled, national roaming and preferred network being 4G but nothing is working. With my Nexus 5 my data just worked so I am unsure why this is happening here. I can send texts and make calls just fine. Phone is on lolipop 5.0.2
The wifi signal in my room is terrible and its constantly dropping and when that happens I can't do anything with it.
I am on tesco mobile with a 2GB 4G plan.

Edit: So I looked around I went into mobile network and scanned, found tesco and registered. So I have 3G data now, but 4G isn't registering. Maybe I need to phone up Tesco and ask them.
Or maybe it's just not a 4G mast where you're connecting?
Is problem "no mobile data at all" or "no LTE connection" ?
Can you transfer data on 3G?
If so - check twice if your SIM card is LTE compatible.
I had to adjust the APN on my phone when I first got it as the one it autodetected wasnt correct. Try that out.
Hi so i just got a z1c and this happened to me. I could send and get text/calls even get notifications and updates. I called sony and t-mobile, nether could help me. Then i found a option under "more" in settings to update "Internet settings" find your server and hit ok. Try it out, i hope this helps.
In my case I needed to contact my carrier to enable 4G. Tried it?
Not sent by me.
settings.>>other>>>internet settings>>>download internet and mms settings...
this should do the trick...
Inconsistent Connection
I got my Z1C a few days ago and updated it to Lollipop yesterday. Ever since the update, the phone has been dropping data connection. I don't know what's the initial cause yet but as it stands, in order to get it working again I have to take out the SIM and reinsert it multiple times. I'm watching it carefully tho because it seems to happen whenever I start Candy Crush. Is there anybody else having this experience?
