Hi
I'm frustrated - my Galaxy Nexus just keeps on crashing, randomly. At first, I thought it had to do with non stable Roms like AOKP (build 23 or 25) or Codename Android (1.4.0). So I downgraded to Stock Rom 4.0.2 on my GSM system.
But it still keeps on crashing. With this, I mean that it reboots all of a sudden and I find myself back at the SIM PIN input screen.
With Codename Android and AOKP, it was so, that it hung "deeply". Ie. when I connected it to my Linux PC, nothing at all showed up in the syslog of the Linux system - normally, it shows that "something" got connected. Not even that happened. "Solution": remove battery…
Well… I know that this is a bit slim, but how/where might I start to debug the cause of the crashes?
I don't have any special hardware connected. Most often, it crashes, while I'm typing somewhere (Browsers (different ones: chrome, browser, dolphin), Google Mail, Google Talk, Google+). But it also happens, that it crashes in the middle of the night, when I'm certainly not typing.
How to debug?
About this phone:
My installed apps: on Google Docs or or pastehtml.com — I also tried trimming the list of installed apps down, but either I didn't trim enough, or it was in vain…
Well… As you might guess… I'm totally clueless…
Thanks,
Alexander
If you have the android development tools installed on ur computer, you could try just leaving the phone plugged in while the Logcat view is opened. Logcat displays a whole bunch of debug info which may help you out when the phone suddenly reboots itself.
Also when you downgraded the firmware to stock, did you also clear the cache partition? Have you tried doing a factory reset from the UI? Did you also downgrade your radio to stock? Things to keep in mind.
- chris
Hm.logcat. Most of the time, i am not near a computer, when it cradhes. Is there a way to continually store the logcat output on the device itself?
When i downgraded, i did a cache wipe. I also did cache wipes / factory resets, when i had the custom roms installed.
I also flashed the stock radio, yes. So that is not the reason, i would say.
It is also not related to the keyboard - i thought so first. So i switched from SlideIt to SwiftKeyX. No change. And it also crashes while i am not typing.
Alexander
If I were you, I'd go to complete stock. Stock rom, kernel, and radios. No extra apps and see if it's a hardware issue or not. But that's just me.
Well, loveubuntu, i see what youre saying, i really do, but this basically would mean, that i couldnt use the phone. And what good is a phone, that cannot be used?
I am already back to stock rom, stock kernel and stock radio.
Well if you're back to 100% stock, relocked and not rooted it could be one of two things. Hardware issue or an app.
Well, thanks, but it doesnt help much...
And, actually, it just occured to me, that it is.already known, that it mist be an app. Ive got the same crashes with custom rom/kernel and stock rom/kernel. This shows, that the crash isnt.related to rom/kernel.
But how to debug this? I cannot keep the smartphone connected to the pc to have logcat ru.ning all the time. When i am travelling, i just dont have a pc around...
Any ideas?
well ffs not 24 hours a day. They mean just plug it in and run a logcat while you're using it and try to force a crash. If you can capture a log of what happened when it crashed then you will know what's crashing it.
If you go back to 100% stock (as in, flash Google images) and it still crashes with no apps installed, its a hardware problem.
Uninstall your task killer while you're at at it...
I cannot force a crash - as I said, it happens randomly
As far as crash with no apps installed… Well… I guess it won't crash, because then I won't be using it. That advice really cannot be followed.
It's been suggested to relock and remove root. What would that do? Could that really have anything to do with it? Very hard to imagine.
Oh, why uninstall the Task Killer? Yes, it's installed, but not active (in the sense, that it does not kill any tasks automatically and I also don't usually kill tasks. System also crashed, when I didn't kill any tasks).

re-locking and unrooting will help diagnose the problem as app related or hardware. You may have a lemon.
Also, if you know it's app related, then the solution is easy. Uninstall all the apps and start again. That's why I suggested a factory reset. You can factory reset being rooted and unlocked. You can backup with titanium backup first anything you may need or make a nandroid.
task killers cause these kinds of problems.
Had a very simler problem to this, on stock 4.0.2, tried rooting and installing custom rom to see if it fixed and didnt also lots of factory resets nothing helped! In the end i had to send it off to sammy, got it back same problem , off again they sent it back with the same problem , off AGAIN got it back on friday with ( oddly) a new screen and havent had a problem since.
My advice send it for repair, if its happening with different roms / stock or whatever its gotta be hardware
If you want a logcat that you dont need a pc for use " alogcat" free app from the market, helped me ( mine actually had hardware error on the logcat )
So I just picked up a nook simple touch and am eager to root it, I've done plenty with Android on phones, never an ebook though. I've been reading the material here and had a couple questions.
1.) It looks like 1.1 firmware is needed for most of the roots here, however B&N only lists 1.2 currently. Does anyone have a mirror to 1.1 or tell me how to get that, currently I'm on 1.0.1
2.) If I can't get 1.1 are there any roots that will work for 1.2? I've been following the thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748 and it looks like it only works from 1.1 by the sound of it.
3.) Is everyone or anyone using the NoRefreshToggle? If so what do you think? Is it worth trying it out? Dangers of using it? When you toggle it off do you get greyscale back? From the sounds of the post, it's pure black and white with it on which is fine if when I disable it, it goes back to normal greyscale images.
4.) Did anyone find out how to turn off page animations in the kindle app? not a big deal, just wondering.
Thanks a lot, look forward to trying this out.
Here's a copy of nook_1_1_update.zip I pulled down from B&N a few weeks ago: http://www.mediafire.com/?h5kn1214gfjhkcg In the end I didn't need it, so I can't confirm how the upgrade works (the instructions said just put the file within the zip on an SD card and reboot)

Thanks for the link
Thanks for the 1.1 post link, however I updated to 1.1.2 and followed the instructions and everything seems to be ok, I can get email, install from the market place, only thing I can't do is search the market. A search just lists a blank page and doesn't find any apps, any ideas.
As for the Kindle question, after installing kindle app and seeing the performance, this isn't a big deal at all.
Still curious on the refresh toggle however, any ideas on that, have you guys tried it out? I may post there if I don't hear back.
Thanks

I have checked and as you said market search functionality is absent, it seems to be broken since the Googleplay thing.
As a way to regain it, in the mean time we get an updated market working, install Searchmarket.
The NorefreshToggle is still in early stages, but works quite well for webpages, etc.
Try it, there are no risks on it, on any program when you enable the app it will work, and when you go into a menu it will return to normal grayscale.

How do I install Searchmarket if I can't search the market for it lol ... Do I have to install it on my phone first, then transfer the apk over to the NST, then file browse and install it from /system/app ?
I tried NoRefreshToggle, it's interesting, like you said a work in progress ... Tried it with GReader unfortunatly it shuts off between Feed view and Article view which is a pain, but I think that's probably to avoid ghosting.
As for web page viewing, Opera Mini FCs on me everytime I open it, as does the stock browser, so I haven't been able to try browsing as of yet Still looking for a solution to that one.
Thanks for all the info, really enjoying the NST if NoRefreshToggle keeps getting better this could really be a killer device

I just use the Google Play website to initiate installs to the nook (it appears in my device list as "phone")
The included Opera Mini installation never worked for me (no FC nothing). In the end I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling.

Didn't even know you could send apps like that to your devices, never had a need to try it before. Worked like a charm ... Opera is working now as well, thanks for the tips Really enjoying Android on the NST
So are you saying you are on 1.1.2 rooted and enjoying it?
Should I downgrade to 1.1.1 and root or just go ahead with 1.1.2?
I can't wait to try this out.

I can't speak to the upgrade patch from 1.1.1, I bought my NST yesterday, it had 1.0.1 on it, I upgraded to 1.1.2 then followed the rooting instructions for 1.1.0 or was it 1.1.1 can't remember, in any case, after rooting everything seems to be working just fine

It was 1.1.0, there was no 1.1.1
Is there any risk upgrading to 1.1.2 from 1.1.0? Would I have to reinstall google apps &c? Did anything change in between 1.1.0 and 1.1.2? (I have heard that they may have fixed the WiFi issues that were plaguing me a few months ago.)
So i have read many post and i mean many and i am still working my brain on catching on to all these. If you all notice, there is a lot to rooting, what you can do, names to things, so so much my brain hurts lol.
But, finally after almost 2 years of being here, 3 phones i grabbed my cojones and rooted my SG2 while still stock. So here are some things. I was going nuts to get Nandroid backup, come to find out that is just a normal back up while in recovery mode.
Now i was trying to do some things with Titanium Backup but got a bit confused. I noticed that with the lite version, I can only uninstall apps not freeze. I want to clean my phone from all the clogs, especially when i notice my memory use shows most of the time 550m-769m, which i have to keep cleaning it. Hoping, removing some apps will help this. What is the difference between freezing and uninstalling. Also, i came across:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
Which it suppose to tell me which i can which i cant. Does this still apply with ICS? And looking at the list, all greens are good, correct?
Also, using root explorer is kinda weird. I was trying to install S Voice which it seems to be a big pain. For one, i have the package in a folder. When searching for it with Root Explorer, and i find S Voice, try to change permission it wont let me. Telling me the following, "Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
Also, trying to copy something into my system/app wont let me either.
What am i doing wrong? or missing?
thanks in advance.

I know the difference from freezing and uninstalling is that freezing halts the app from running and removes it from your app list. If you are uninstalling something you think is bloat, back it up first, in case it screws things up you can restore it. Freeze is a good way to test whether or not you want to just simply uninstall it.
Titanium Backup Pro is totally worth the few bucks though if you can afford it.. a real good buy..
As far as the other stuff, I don't mess with system/app things so maybe someone else can help with that.
For the green-coloured apps, I would make sure I have an alternate app that can take care of that feature of the phone. For example you can remove the camera app, but without a replacement/alternate app your phone won't have a camera function.
TBP is the perfect app to test whether an app is good to remove. Just freeze it and see if your phone acts up. My understanding is that freezing=not letting an app run, uninstalling=getting rid of it.
In terms of not having the permission to copy files in the system directories, you may need to install a terminal emulator to change the permissions and do the copying manually.
Thank you guys and sorry for the very late reply. Using TBP i was able to FREEZE many apps, decided to go this route, i was and still am abit afraid of damaging something and not being able to go back and fix it.
However, i still have a few situations. Even freeze so many apps my battery still dies very fax with little use i give the phone. I also see the following apps under my memory usage and i do not know what they are and if they can be froze too to even get more memory back.
Enterprise VPN Service
IPService
SIM Toolkit
CSC
Bluetoothtest (i know that is the bluetooth but do not know if there is a way to freeze this program)
Google Services Framework
Package Access Helper
com.sec.android.providers.d
Download manager
Samsung Account
My Uploads
com.movial.ipprovider
Badgeprovider
Device Management
Systeme manager application
Popupiureceiver
Mobilelife Contacts

Atmazzz i want to say thank you. Doing what you said helped my hang. I do not have that problem anymore. But i am wondering if fixing the permission could have be the cause i lost S Voice talkback feature. What i mean, is that after doing the wipe cache/dalvik and fixing permissiong, now my S Voice does not talk back to me. No matter how many time i restart the phone or whatever i do, it wont talk anymore.
On another note, thanks to you, i have come to understand more about all the rooting. All i have to do now is soon gets some strength and install a new rom than stock. But there are so many, i do not know which one to use. Especially with the official ICS i bet they are better now.
I just also hope that neither of the rom come with the bricking problem. As far as i read it only happens when using ICS kernel and my phone is 0X12 so i get worry.
I don't know the cause. I have noticed that it has happened on different devices, there have been assumptions if it's because of a specific kernel or rom, although it may be, I beg to differ. I feel it is happening during the Android Upgrading Apps # of # process.
I noticed that this error pops up on most of the apps that I had installed, but are not there after my update. So far with me, it happened only to my paid apps, but not all of them.
When the app disappears, android thinks it's missing, but some files think it is still installed.
Regularly when you install an app over itself, there is a notice telling you that the application info will remain. That's where the problem lies once an app mysteriously disappears. Because part of it is still installed.
Go to
/data/data/
and search for your
com.application-address.whatever-it-may-be
Some of them you can tell what they are just by the names, the others, google-em.
If you wish to keep the information that it contains for the app, I recommend making a copy of it first.:good:
Delete it
Install the application, it'll work, trust me. :fingers-crossed:
Now replace it with your copy.
Done.
Stop factoring resetting if you don't want to. Of course, if you have a lot missing, it might be better. :crying:
If someone can automate this process by making something check the com.address to installed apps, that would be awesome. :highfive:
This totally worked. Thanks bro!
I was setting up my Nexus 4, and this was Tune In Radio Pro was the last app and wouldn't install, I kept getting that stupid -24 error.
Saved me from doing a factory reset!
Works!

I have this issue with Swiftkey and there is no 'data/data/' folder, checked both root and sdcard and hidden files are shown ...
Edit: Configured ES File Explorer to mount partition as writable and gave root access -> files were there now and deleting the one with Swiftkey solved my problem.

Anyone one you know anything about android..!?!?!?!
U need to root first...!!!
Worked for me as well.
You need to use something like ES File Browser with Root access to get to /Data/Data
I'm running into this issue with a bunch of apps that got lost when flashing a newer CM10.1 nightly. I can't access those folders in data/data since ES File Manager is one of the apps that gets this error!
Is there any other way to fix this? I can't install anything, not even Chrome :crying:

Someone maybe didn't understand the meaning of the thread creater. You must have the root access. Then, open Root Explore and go to "data/data" NOT "sdcard/data/data"

In case it might help someone else I thought I'd pass along what I just did to fix the problem. I booted into recovery and found the com.speed.... file for root explorer that way and deleted it and then rebooted. I then was able to load and install root explorer from the play store and now I can sit back and delete all the rest of the apps that won't install correctly...
I guess I could have done it from recovery also but I forgot to write them all down before I rebooted!

Done.
Stop factoring resetting if you don't want to. Of course, if you have a lot missing, it might be better. :crying:
If someone can automate this process by making something check the com.address to installed apps, that would be awesome. :highfive:

Worked Like a Charm Thank you for you help
can't find data
used es file explorer with root access can't find data/data
only ever dealt with android products such as my tab pro, note 3/4. but just purchased and received my pumpkin kd-c0250 headunit.
had a quick look and seen someone recommend new/custom firmware.
Stock music player seems a bit **** too but integrates with the home screen which i tried with shuttle music player and that doesnt, unless its possible to add it as a wiget?
also im guessing a universal root for 4.4.4 should work to get me root access too?
just looking to see what others can recommend as a good starting point for making the headunit "better" all round. sorry if this gets posted once a day or anything

If you are new to Android, the first thing I would suggest is looking at replacing the Launcher. This will give you a lot more freedom
to add widgets for things like Shuttle and other apps you may want to try. I would also leave the ROM stock for as long as you can stand to do so. Take notes as you work with the stock ROM of the changes you would like to make, and search through the threads here to find if
you can make them without flashing to a custom ROM.
Rooting this unit is quite simple by using the temporary root method. Enter *#hct#root# as the password when opening System Settings.
DO NOT REBOOT. First go to the Play Store and Install the SUPERSU app by CHAINFIRE Once you have done that, let the system reboot,
and then go back to System Settings and enter the password adboff This will turn off the temporary factory SuperUser app, but you will still be able to use the CHAINFIRE SUPERSU app you installed to control root access of your apps.
I will say that if you want to jump in off the deep end, Malaysk has put together some awesome stuff.
I started with a DSA Rooted Stock Rom and installed APEX Launcher, mostly because it let me get started with a built in root,
and it also gave me 2 or 3 GBs to install other apps where the Stock ROM from the Factory only had a 1 GB partition.
Have Fun, and
Good Luck,
Rick
Sidenote:
the code *#hct#root# did not work with my KD-C0250, if it does for Harmonial i'de like to know
Installed one of the stock rooted Roms and entered the code and it worked. Dunno if it would have worked on the original rom.
There's as music app in the system/app folder. (Or is it /apk) at work and can't check.
That hash better layout for the library I like, but for the life of me I can't get it to open other than when it boots on startup with auto player from the likes of the headunit app.. Anyone got any idea on that front? Tried installing the apk and it does it successfully but no icon to open it, or even the option to open once done like with usual apks, just a "done" button

Oh ok, still on the original rom here, thanks for the info!
Still cant get my head around this music app thing.
the one that has an icon and is the only one i can open is the default "mtcmusic3" app.
the one that will start on boot with the headunit app is just called "music" and is in the system/app folder.
Info on the app when i check it out is "version 4.4.4-eng.meng.20150806.-211037". would really like to just run that as standard. but if i exit out of it at any point i can only seem to reopen it via booting the head unit again, no shortcut on the launcher to open it.
