First, big thank you to everybody on this forum. The work that goes into getting these devices to do the amazing things these roms and apps can do is staggering.
I had a first generation Kindle fire, loved it. Was easy to root, lots of great choice for roms, lively forum discussion, etc
I sold it for well over what I paid for it and about a year later (two weeks ago) got a second generation Kindle. Much harder to prep for root/rom than the first but doable. Might be my imagination but it seems like less available roms as well.
Why is the second generation Kindle so less popular and alive in the forums?
Just better alternatives now with the nexus 7 and 10, etc? Is the added difficulty in root/rom scaring folks away? Was the first generation Kindle just so popular because of the entry level pricing and thus got more attention?
Just curious.
Your thoughts on the matter?

I think the kindle fire HD has a lot more users...

My guess is because Amazon made it harder to customize it. For example, you need root just for simple things such as sideloading another launcher and changing the wallpaper.

Will be writing up instructions later today. Please post any problems with the port you have here.
Please note I'm not trying to put you down:
Even if you haven't released the directions I'm guessing you didn't re-size everything and it's a raw port? If there was no re-sizing then in reality this is a port for "other 7 inch tablets". Also The launcher a) uses a lot of amazons resources (server) b) it's not the best.
PROTIP #12312: Don't make your topic before you have a write-up. No ones going to take your topic in the 5 minutes it's going to take you.

The point is to be able to use the stock launcher on other roms.
A) is that supposed be some kind of deterrent? I guess I'll take android off my phone since it uses Google's server resources.
B) what criteria do you employ when determining what launcher is the best? I'm sure some would disagree with you.

A) Regular launchers don't rely on google's servers. Kindle's does. With out it half of the functions are gone.
B) I didn't know anyone did? After using a different launcher most people couldn't go back.
Summary: Like I said unless a lot of work went into this port. It wasn't sized, so I will be very cluttered in anything less then a 7" screen.

A) If we follow your logic then, due to the launcher using kindles servers they should have never used it in the first place. That was their choice and its the users choice whether or not to use it.
B) That's because this group you claim as "most" are probably previous Android users. This is all personal preference so pretty much what you did was come into the thread and say "I don't care for this and neither do most people". How encouraging. And pointless.
If it was posted in KINDLE FIRE DEVELOPMENT, I don't see why anyone would try to run it on a screen smaller than 7".

For me, it's a great idea. Kindle Fire UI is known for its easy use, e.g. kids or very noob.
For example, i'm interested to port it on nook or smartphone.

Jesus dude. At least wait for a screenshot before you go putting somebody's work down. At least he's trying to contribute, and it's up to us to decide whether or not this is something we can use.
I realize i'm probably going to get flamed immensely for this however for the sake of putting this out there i'll take that risk. I realize after having bought the Kindle Fire and finding out that there are better alternatives out there for the operating system you have become extremely excited, so have I. I understand because i'm also in this situation however what not many people seem to remember is that this new operating system opportunity is not supported by amazon, AKA you are not guaranteed this. The developers on this forum enjoy what they do and share their results with you because they choose to. These developers are not full time slaves to the kindle fire. They have their own personal lives and have jobs outside of these forums. The work they are doing is a great step forward for the Kindle Fire. In essence it makes the Kindle Fire worth more in the long run because it is capable of doing more than when you originally bought it. What am I trying to say? BE PATIENT! The developers have continuously updated the community on their progress, sometimes quickly and sometimes not so quickly. Their speed is their choice and often hinges on issues they run into with their own modding. If you are impatient try to do what they do, risk your kindle like they are and see if you can get better results. Please remember that these developers are doing you a favor and are NOT performing a service. Respect their work, offer criticism if you think it will help with the mod (AKA an issue you've found with the mod) and DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT TIME, they donate the time to you out of kindness, don't make them regret it out of greed.
Thank you,

I'm sure the 'wrong section' games will start in a minute but before they do...
please listen to what he says... It might not seem like a real issue at all... but it has become incredibly difficult for people to learn when the people that are capable of assisting are leaving... They're farther in between than they used to be, and they typically are not very eager to communicate, all work and no play. Be nice

Thank you for reminding us.. I agree 100%!
I'll let it slide for a while, to make sure some of the newbs read it and realize how all true it is. We as devs, do this for fun, in our spare time. Enjoy what you get for free and... DON'T look a gift horse in the mouth! (< google it if you're too young to get it.. lol)
This post being in the wrong place just ruins it for me. Plus i honestly think that the only people that would get something out of this message is people like myself who ALREADY know that you shouldnt nag devs and you shouldnt be a ETA spamming retard.
That title sounds like a prediction/speculation but honestly its just curiousity. If aftv gets lollipop is it likely to attract more developers?
I know its been said the in terms of development aftv was a letdown but think its still a very popular set top box. And if it wasnt for Geohot's root and rbox's just about everything else, this box wouldn't be modified at all.
But is the reason for that jellybean or Amazon's security or maybe a combination of both? Its just weird so many phones and tablets to choose from with all sorts of custom ROMs yet aftv was one of the only good choices for android based TV boxes yet very few developers were moved.
I'd call it a bit of a loaded question. If/when AFTV goes to Lollipop that will make it easier for Android devs to support or continue supporting AFTV along with other Android devices in general. So no, it's not going to attract more devs for AFTV only games/apps but yes more devs will make AFTV versions of their apps. Android 4 isn't THAT old and it's still fairly well supported, so I'd say it's more a case of moving to Lollipop before devs start abandoning it more than a case of attracting new devs. Of course this is just all my take, call it a guess or just speculation.
There is no way of knowing if more developers will work on the Fire TV if and when its upgraded. There is no way of even knowing how many developers have even tried to do things with the Fire TV. The one thing you are sure to see is a new influx of root talk once the Fire TV is upgraded to android 4.4, but if they are not able to accomplish root, that talk will die down quickly. I think some people are not realizing that the reason you do not see a lot of custom things for the Fire TV is because Amazon is winning the battle. Amazon has won the rooting battle, which turns a lot of people off to the Fire TV. In winning the rooting battle they have been able to keep the Fire TV the way they intended it to be. Sure you can run a launcher, but unless you are rooted, which most are not, then you are stuck with a black background on most lunchers, not to mention all the other things you cannot do unless you are rooted. There are a lot of people that think if they are not able to have root than the device is not worth it. I think that is part of why the Fire TV has not seen a lot of custom mods. To see what I mean just read the AT&T Galaxy Note 4 forums and you will see how many people talked about returning it just because it could not be rooted. They acted like the Galaxy note 4 was not worth a cent just because they could not root it. Amazon really has the Fire TV locked down right now and some people find it boring. This is what happens when smart company like Amazon stays on top of their product and takes measures to stop people from hacking it. The only other mainstream set top device that was never hacked or had very liitle customizations is the Apple TV 3, but the difference is that Apple has followers that will buy their products regardless, while I think if Amazon came out with a Fire TV 2 they would have people waiting to see if it was rootable before they buy it. Nobody wants to believe it, but Amazn has won thus far against devs hacking their device. A clear cut win for Amazon.
I'd say 95% of FireTV owners don't even care about root.
It's open enough as it is for most. We are a niche.
I figured itd be a tough thing to predict. However, to me this is a weird device in the android world. For awhile it was the only good choice in set top boxes (performance&price) and i dont think it was amazon's secure nature that impeded development. Root was achieved just a couple of months after its release and amazon didnt break root right away. I dont know the exact numbers but id say theres quite a few rooted aftvs in circulation. Phones are obviously more popular but you have soo many choices there. My gut says things will more or less remain static for aftv development but the why puzzles me a little. Guess it matters less and less. I hate amazon's insistence on control but cant complain about what theyve done recently. Overall, im happy with it and if that changes we now have good alternatives like nvidia shield.
Hi from Spain, I've just bought a Fire Phone and i have a question:

Ok, many thanks.
I am 99% convinced there will never be Fire OS 5 for Fire Phone.
Also no bootloader unlocker.
You probably have to live with that.
The FirePhone was dropped by Amazon and they fired about the half personell of their R&D dept.
So, no FOS 5 for the FP.
It is a pity, FP is a great smartphone.

We will send this as an alert; In order to notify to all the customers before the launch.
There is no need to be concerned. Once if the update launches. Your fire phone device will be automatically updated with the software update.

Pretty much ignored everything you asked for with the standard uninformative blurb. It's likely a template response they have for anyone asking about an update for the Fire Phone. They likely don't have anyone on staff anymore for the Fire Phone. Anyone that was still around likely got moved to other projects.
I asked them the same question few months ago and they answered the same. I think it is a standard answer for this question.
It is a pity that Amazon doesn't take care of its customers. We can only wait for Fire OS 5.
Many thanks for your answers.
I couldn't care less about Fire OS 5, but it would be nice if they would just give us the bootloader unlock since they have ceased supporting it. We can dream, right?
just unlock the bl and we will build FireOS5 ourselves

Hi,
First of all, I ask you please read this entire mail, and try to make it reach people who can do something about this issue.
I will like to know if you can give any news about a software update on Fire Phone. I can understand you discontinued the product but less than 2 years of support is something that I would never expected from Amazon. I make a buying decision counting on Amazon good sense of responsibility and customer satisfaction.
Me and a considerable number of users are claiming for a Fire 5.0 OS in order to be able keep using most of the newest apps. Also features like Google Play Services are required for apps that aren't in the App Store, and the newest versions stopped working on the Fire Phone. My WhatsApp isn't functional on Fire Phone anymore, and using it from Google Play doesn't let me know how many messages are pending for reading. So I feel like I am forced to use a bugged phone or buy a new one. This is really frustrating considering that Nexus 5, Moto X, The HTC One M8 (among others) are from 2014 as well and still being completely functional and working with Android 6.0.
Can you please give me a satisfactory answer? Or should I assume that Amazon tricked me selling me a phone with an early expiration date?
Thanks in advance for your time and help,
Best

I think the best we can do is write Amazon making clear that at this point, we are somewhat cheated by them. Too much people angry trash talking about Amazon isn't something that I think they really like.

Because it is not possible to unlock the bootloader. So everything custom is based on Kitkat.

Jailbreak? Jailbreak is a term that is used for apple. People call sideloading apps on the firestick jailbreaking, if that is what you want. I am not into collecting money for helping. This is really easy, goto settings turn on ADB debugging and unknown apps in develoment options. Goto about in setting find your IP address, then use this app to connect and install apps....
ADB link
Jocala Software
jocala.com
I am assuming this is all you want to do is install 3rd part apps. Buying a jailbroken firestick is a scam....

Just seen this post there lol
I think offering cash for something that is done by the developers for the illusion and buzz (not to mention the education) is rather counterproductive to development. It's really okay to help/donate to these guys who work hard and help them with materials and test devices etcetera.
However, that being said to offer up ££$$$ for the sake of getting it done quicker.
I don't want to offend you as I recently done to another member.
But use the search function and by all means learn from what you read ( the way we all had to do it) whilst this is a bit late for your deadline.
It's more satisfying doing it by yourself instead of lining the pockets of these scammers you see out there. As @Michajin said it is really easy to do but jailbreaking refers to apple/ios not android.
Anyone else reading this for future reference needing help in a hurry and feels its taking too long for a response. Pm me and we'll set up a chat or whatever and I'll guide you free of charge.
