Files left behind after flashing new rom - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
wondered if anyone can help.
I have been playing with new roms on my note 2 and after I flash a new rom I am still noticing files left on the phone from old apps.
I use clockwork mod to flash, I factory reset, format system, clear dalvex (might not be whats its called but u know what I meen) and then flash. Is there any thing im missing as I want a clean phone

Clear Cache,Dalvik Cache, Factory reset, this should help you in clearing them, If still any files left behind may be there are from this new ROM your assuming they are left over from previous rom no but still this rom also has those apps.

If there are files left over from old apps, they're probably the files stored on the internal SD Card. I think they're usually in /sdcard/android or something

If you want a clear installation you can format internal memory from your recovery or flash the Mega/Super wipe script before flashing the new rom.

[Mod][Utility] Wiping Tools - Simple and Fast

Attached are three recovery flashable wiping tools I use when doing my work.
I find them to be incredibly useful tools that save some power button & volume rocker mashing, and time.
Wipe Cache and Dalvik - Wipes Cache and Dalvik (duh!)
Useful for:
-Flashing GApps
-Resolving app issues
Wipe Full - Wipes Cache, Dalvik, Data, and System
-Wipes just about all data except internal sd card
-Stops just short of a factory reset (does not wipe media)
-Useful for flashing ROMs within a type (e.g. going from one CM ROM to another CM ROM)
Wipe Full Factory Reset - Wipes Cache, Dalvik, Data, System, and internal sd card
-Useful when going from one ROM type to another (e.g. going from CM to TW)
_____________________
This is the part of the updater-script that selectively wipes /data in case anyone wants to add this to their ROM:
Code:
delete_recursive("/data/dalvik-cache");
delete_recursive("/data/app");
delete_recursive("/data/app-asec");
delete_recursive("/data/app-private");
delete_recursive("/data/backup");
delete_recursive("/data/data");
delete_recursive("/data/drm");
delete_recursive("/data/log");
delete_recursive("/data/misc");
delete_recursive("/data/property");
delete_recursive("/data/system");
delete_recursive("/data/time");
delete_recursive("/data/user");
Changing the code above to the code below effectively performs a factory reset
(look at /data/media and you will see your internal sd card)
Code:
delete_recursive("/data");
As Always - Flash at your own risk!
First! And am trying it* now

I use these all the time. There should be no problems.
The only possible issue is that there are additional Sprint specific folders in /data that should be deleted as well to complete the wiping process.
What happened with the other wipe zips?
Um read the post and the part where it says wipe everything except internal sd......does this mean it'll wipe external sd as well or not?
Also does this wipes Sprint specific files and if it does what's the repercussion?

Full Wipe is just like a factory reset, except it does not wipe your internal sd card. And like a factory reset, this will not wipe your external sd card. As shown in the OP it only wipes files in /data.
The repercussions are effectively the same as a factory reset you would perform in recovery.
I added a full wipe with factory reset zip to the OP and updated the post to reflect the changes.

There was a previous mod created by someone who just kind of copied and pasted and the wipe actually wiped some serious items that caused the phone to brick. I don't remember what it actually wiped (partition I think) but it was very important to the phone, it was eventually fixed but there were a lot of angry people with shiny new paperweights instead of phones.

Hopefully one of the local devs that you guys trust will stop by and give these zips the all clear.
Otherwise you will be without some handy tools.

I just wanted to confirm that when I was switching from Paranoid Android (CM10 based ROM) to Galaxy S fre3 2.34d (TW based ROM), I was left with about 2.5GB of internal space because the wipe options in recovery were not wiping properly.
I successfully used the factory reset zip and then flashed a new ROM and now have 11.65GB available on internal storage.
THANKS OP!
Thanks to the OP for his work. Now, stupid "user who doesn't know anything" question;
Some instructions and videos say to use the "format" function (e.g.; format system format cache, etc)
In the command code: what is different between a "wipe" and a "format"?

Just what i needed, it works flawlessly
I was running a CM M1 nightly and wanted to update I used the wrote and factory reset zip and it wiped my entire internal memory...
I'm not sure why this happened I used this zip before without issue but it sucked getting phone restored and trying to in delete at least pictures on the phone.
I noticed that the least couple of nightlies is creating a folder called 0 and moving all directories there. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.
I just wanted to share not complaining. Thanks! :beer:

Sorry you lost your files.
The factory reset zip does perform a factory reset. That is what it is supposed to do.
Are you sure you didn't use the full wipe before?
I always store my important stuff on my external sd card so this can't happen. I also keep the factory reset zip in a separate folder so I can't use it by accident (I've done that before).
And yes, the CM 10.1 ROMs will create the "0" folder (which is for profiles) and will also usually create new (often multiple) sdcard0 folders.

Cannot open gallery

Hey everyone,
I recently flashed jedi invasion 5 rom to my tmobile galaxy s3. For some reason I can't seem to open my gallery, it tells me I don't have enough space, however, I have plenty of space in both my internal memory and my 32gb sd card. Any help would be great, thanks
What were the steps you took in flashing the rom, we need a little more info to help you out.
Go into manage applications setting and clear app data for anything that has to do with media storage & gallery in the system apps list, then reboot. That may or may not help.

Sorry about that. So prior to Jedi invasion rom i was rooted with some stock rom. I basically went into clockwork recovery mode, i wiped user data, wiped cache, wiped dalvik, and then i flashed the jedi invasion rom. I have actually redid this process over a few times already, still however the gallery fails to load telling me that there isn't enough space. I have tried formatting my sd card, cleaning out my internal storage, clearing my gallery cache... all of those didn't help fix the issue either. Although, when i downloaded a different gallery from play store, that worked just fine.

It is strange... By wiping system do you mean wipe data/factory reset in recovery mode? Or is there another way you're referring to that does a more, for lack of better words, cleaner wipe?
I can't remember where it is under on CWM I'm a TWRP kinda guy. I think Mounts and Storage, and yes is't where all the system files are (the ones that aren't delete-able without Root Access). Like gallery and such. My guess some bad left overs from the other rom/gallery/camera aren't compatible with the rom/gallery/camera you have now.

How do i install another rom without deleting off internal storage?

Hi, i just got my nexus and have flashed a rom onto it but i want to try another rom and dont want to do a full factory reset and scrub and loose all my stuff on my internal storage.
I have used a superwipe script on my previous smart phones, is there something like this available yet? if not how do i go about changing roms without deleting from my internal storage?
Thanks for any help:good:
Well to try a different ROM, your going to have to factory reset, that doesn't mean it wipes the internal memory though. Just put the ROM on the root of the tab, and flash it. Shouldn't wipe anything off the tab besides data and cache, leaving everything else intact.

What is the entire process you are doing?
Are you wiping the system partition then installing a different ROm, without wiping data?
If so that explains it. The wallpaper is user data. So if you, for example, wipe the system parition of CM10 and install SlimBean which is based on CM10, the system will still look for the wallpaper in the same place. It will find your previous user data, and the wallpaper you had before will show up again.
However...don't do that. You're begging for problems. Not 'bricked phone' problems. But force closes and other settings conflicts from where the 2 roms arent' perfectly compatible.
This is my process for flashing a new rom
Step 1 reboot into recovery
Step 2 wipe system data
Step 3 wipe cache
Step 4 wipe dalvik
Step 5 format system
Step 6 flash rom
Am I doing it all wrong?

That's pretty strange. What recovery? Maybe try a different recovery or ODIN back to stock and start "fresh".
Not GS4 related but on my old GS2, TWRP would not wipe no matter what I did till I use a Superwipe script.
If you formatted your internal SD card, you shouldn't have any problems. What is the wallpaper that you see on both ROMs? Is it a wallpaper you downloaded? If so, where is it located? What recovery are you using? All this information should have been mentioned in your original post.

That's I've never had ANY issues with flashing my roms . Never had residual files or wallpaper left over. I use cwm touch recovery as I seemed to have Some issues with Twrp. Here are the EXACT steps I take EVERY time I flash a rom. First in recovery I wipe data factory reset, then I wipe cash and dalvik cash, then I install rom from external sd card. After those steps I reboot and I've ALWAYS been good to go. These are the ONLY steps I take when flashing my roms. Ive had several different rooted devices and have ALWAYS followed these simple steps. I have a 64 gig sd card and everything is perfect with it. Only time I formatted it was at first instalation. Never had any issues. I've been doing it this way for years. Wipe data factory reset,wipe cash and dalvik, install from external sd card, reboot. I know some might have different ways but ive ALWAYS been successful with this method. You might want to try just these four steps and see if your issue still persists. This way has ALWAYS worked perfectly for me. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try. So only wipe data factory reset then wipe cash then wipe dalvik cash then install zip from external sd card and reboot. See how that works out for you. It should solve your issue. I really hope this helps. Best wishes. World's perfectly for me EVERY time.

Zedge saves to /sdcard/zedge. Backup your wallpaper to external, then (using CWM or Philz)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
format system
format sd card
wipe dalvik cache
Then flash your ROM. Backup anything you want to save on internal SD to external SD prior to formatting sdcard.

I'm not seeing you wipe user data at any point in this process.
Unless you mean the data partition when you say 'system data'.
Do this...
reboot to recovery
wipe and/or format...in one single step...system, data, dalvik, cache
flash new rom and any add ons (kernel, gapps, etc)
reboot
If the old wallpaper is sitll there then you've got a phone that's possessed by a poltergeist. Call the Ghostbusters.
Even with that Zedge app that you used to install your wallpaper, that shouldn't be showing up on first boot of a new ROM becaus ethe new ROM won't be looking for the Zedge app data until you install that app.

Likewise S5 questions

Hey everyone. I was wondering if the latest Likewise S5 2.5 beta version will work for my Galaxy S3 T999. Im running 4.3 with the build NC2 running stock rom and kernel. How would i install that rom? Because on the page it doesnt show any way of installing it. I have CWM recovery. If anyone has this rom could they please tell me how much ram this rom uses. I really like this rom. Whats the difference between the LT version and the 2.5 Beta? Whats the prefixer (+1 fix) on the latest update for?
Thanks i would really appreciate if someone could answer my questions thanks

Thanks for the help. And one more question. Do i have to have an external sd card to install a rom. Ive searched this all over the internet and i couldnt get an exact answer

No you can flash it from internal SD, but when you wipe make sure you don't wipe data or internal SD. Just factory reset, wipe system, and cache and dalvik cache all from recovery
Thanks how do i make sure i dont wipe the whole thing and only the wipe system/factory reset?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using XDA Free mobile app
On the wipe options don't select media or internal SD, that's about it
In twrp, by default, factory resetting will preserve your internal sdcard. It will wipe everything else you need to reset.
Many still disagree with me on this next point, but do not wipe /system. Any rom you might flash will do that for you. But if you do wipe system, and something doesn't work as expected and aborts the rom flash, you will now have a device with no o/s. Ive seen it happen many times and is always a headache easily avoided.
Like I said, some disagree with me on this, but none have been able to convince me that there's ever a time that wiping /system has any benefit.
