JuiceDefender on Nexus

Has anyone tried this out? I just put it on and have not gone through a battery cycle. Trying to see if it will help with battery life.

Some people swear by it, but then again some people believe a supernatural being exists because someone said so.

Yeah I've used it since I got the Nexus and it works great. Does what it's supposed to do. I don't believe in supernatural beings though.

I purchased JuiceDefender and also Green Power Premium and never really noticed a big difference in battery life against leaving them off and changing wireless profiles.
Getting almost 2 days out of my Nexus so may give them a go once they both fully support ICS just to test.

Disable JuiceDefender for a week and see if that bug still exists. If not, problem solved. You can do the same as juice defender by pushing the multitask button and swipping away any apps you don't want.

JuiceDefender is not only great for a little energy saving, but also for featured like WLAN by localization and display Brightness configuration.
I used it on the S2 and now on the GN.
On Ics it has some little bugs yet, but it also does seem great job here.

I have the basic version of JuiceDefender running on my GN and I swear its making a noticeable difference in battery life.
I have it set to disable my Data connection whenever the phone is locked. It re-enables it when I unlock it, so it doesn't come on when I'm just checking the time. The effect is immediate too so data is there when you need it.
It also comes on once every 30min just to let apps/email sync briefly.
According to JuiceDefender its improved my battery life by 1.7x. I'd be inclined to say its about right...

Lol it does a bit more than that mate. It's the radio function management I need since I'm always too lazy to toggle them manually. I've been meaning to disable it to test if the lock screen bug would go away but I find it hard to use my phone without it now that I've got so used to it. Now that's it's the Christmas holiday though I might give it a go.

It made a big difference in battery life but it takes way too long for the device to reconnect to the mobile network when i wake it up. Likewise, it will not allow me to get my emails throughout the day unless I wake it up.

The multitask button doesn't kill apps - swiping just removes them from the list. Its more like a recent used apps list - like long pressing the home button on Android 2.x use to be - than a multi task manager showing running apps.
As for juice defender, I bought ultimate, and it was just horrible. Very laggy UI, and felt like it was causing more battery usage itself than saving. The comments for 'ultimate' on the market seem to say the same thing. The free version seems much better, although you don't have as many options. There's also another paid version which is cheaper, but I havent tried it.
Put it this way, I uninstalled it Waste of £4.99 which is a ridiculously hefty price for something that cant even get its UI right.

I can confirm the same behavior on my phone with JD, forcing a battery pull a few times a day. after uninstalling it, I get no more unresponsive screen. I can only conclude that it wasn't playing nice with ics

i have this on my GNEX and it is awesome.
yeah some little quirks BUT, definitely prolonging my battery due to wifi/mobile data management.
i'm not experiencing the unresponsive issues and stuff you guys are reporting..
maybe its another app????
i'm getting more than 16hrs on my phone.
as for ultimate. no need for that unless you have a rooted phone.
pro is very good.
i picked up th pro version for $0.99 when it was on sale.

Hi,
I'm using it on my rooted GN 4.0.1, works well.
By using 3G/WLAN management I come up to 25 - 30 hours lasting battery power.
At home and in my office I told JDU (JuiceDefenderUltimate) to switch to those WLAN's and disable 3G there.
I'vnt tested all the other features like cpuspeedcontroll, or something else.
For me it works perfect.

Steps to prove yourself incorrect:
1) Install OSMonitor
2) Open GMail
3) Go to homescreen and open OSMonitor
4) In the process list, make sure GMail is listed (it should be!).
5) Press the Multitask soft button and swipe away GMail.
6) Check for GMail in OSMonitor and it will have disappeared as it is no longer running.
Magic!

On-topic: I've used JuiceDefender Ultimate on all three Nexuses over the years and I certainly think that it makes a big difference by turning wifi off when not in use and turning mobile data off when the screen is off, although I have loads of other settings configured within the app also.

JD Works Great
I have been using JD Ultimate on my Nexus and it works great (I would estimate 1.5 - 2x battery life).
I used the Nexus for a little over a week without JD just to have a set expectations of what my battery life is without JD.
I have not seen any bugs with this up til now.

I get the same issue and I dont get it when I uninstalled Juice Defender
My phone also reboots randomly and I am wondering if its linked toJuice Defender. The reboots only started recently

I use JD free on my GN, although I haven't seen what battery would be like without JD on it. On my Incredible, JD made the difference between not getting though a single day to getting almost 2 days out of my battery. On my GN with JD I'm still only getting about one full day's worth out of it, sometimes not quite a full day.

I am using Juice Defender Plus and it is set to manage it self then WiFi and 3g network. I am using wifi at home and in the office,and the rest -3g
In my opinion....jd plus does worth the money spent.

Ice Cream Sandwich seems to do a lot of the things that JuiceDefender did on my old phone. For example, data is automatically turned off when you are connected to WiFi. I had it installed for a while, but when I looked at the list of apps that were using the battery (in the Android settings menu) JuiceDefender was listed as using a fair amount of battery. I'm not sure it is worth the hassle on this phone.

I wanna test out the 2g/3g/4G mode but it's giving me a warning that it could break my data and not able to be restored so I'm too chicken **** to test it.

Yes. Swear by it.
There are plenty of nay-sayers, and no doubt you'll hear from them here. I wouldn't argue the experience they've had, but then, I don't see why they argue mine (and other happy users).
I had terrible problems with battery drain on my Epic 4G. I had a lot of crap running, keeping the radios alive all the time with little junk that was just fine updating in bursts every 15 min. when JD wakes up the cell radio for apps to do some traffic.I'm also not OCD enough to remember to turn my wifi on and off.
Anyway, with JD and my configuration, I sip electrons. Take JD away and... not so much.
Put it on the GN and it seems to be working just as well if not better. I see threads full of people complaining about battery life -- I'm easily getting a day and a half out of mine with moderate use (maybe 20-30 min total talk time, some internet, YouTube, 20 minutes of gaming, and other typical usage). Sitting on standby, I lose about 1% and hour.
When configured properly, I find JD helps a lot, chiefly by automatically managing the radios. Worth it.

But do you specifically use the 2g/3g/4G toggle or do you just have your profile set to turn data off?

Yeah, sorry I wasn't more helpful about that. I only answered your first question
I don't use the specific toggles. I just turn data entirely on and off. I didn't see the benefit of switching specific data modes.
Yes, 3G uses less power than 4G, and 2G less than 3G, but OFF uses the least!

Haha np, I just like to be able to get my emails and mms etc.. At all times.. But hate leaving 4G on..
Just thought it would be perfect to have a profile to turn it to 3g or 2g like 30 seconds after the screen goes off..

Juice Defender is, without a doubt, the worst app I've ever paid for.

I had problems with JD on my SGS but it seems to be working much better on the GN. Stops the battery from draining while I'm not using the device. The main thing I'm using it for is controlling WiFi by location. I only have a few apps enabled with the screen off so it shouldn't be using a lot of data.

I will third that motion. Had nothing but crashes and battery pulls on my SGN. Once JD was removed phone ran smoothly again

I would like to see if 2G is good enough to keep my internet radio going, it's currently killing my battery, like 10-20% per hour. Is there an option to use 3G, but no HSDPA?

I may as well weigh in with my view on this, as an agreement with both sides. When I had JD Ultimate loaded on both stock and custom ROMs on my Gnex, I undoubtedly saw battery life gains when the phone was idling, and they were significant. However, far too often I would go to unlock the phone, and the touch screen would be unresponsive and I would have to battery pull. Not once has this happened without JD running. A couple of times a day with. So it worked for me, but the instability that came with it was too much to bear, so I uninstalled.

Yea I know it's possible, but I just like that JD manages so many things for me, like auto-brightness, radio schedule or that it automatically enables WiFi when I get home and disables it when I leave and can do the same with Bluetooth if I wanted.
Surely I will uninstall JD when I loose interest in its advantages or when I find a different app that works better for me or when I simply get bored with it.
I only had to pull battery once since I installed it, which is not that bad. If it starts to annoy me, I will get rid of it. But so far it's ok.

My issue is that I don't want something controlling my phone. Too much control. I can all those things myself if need be. Isn't that the whole purpose of Android phones? To have control?

Sounds like the solution for you is simply not use JD.
For me, the solution is to use JD to let it manage some boring things for me so I can focus on other more interesting stuff.

Except never had a crash or lockup, never had to pull battery.
I'm a flash maniac, hacker, and mod extensively. I run a lot of crap on my phone. JD does a great job managing things automatically so I get great battery life.
That is, JD ultimate... the free version is way too limited.
Only problem I've ever had is JD bring really slow to turn data on when I wake up the phone, after its been running fora long time (like into the second day). Fixed by stopping and restarting JD most of the time.
Rarely happens because I reboot at least once a day for one reason or another.
Arguing over whether JD is "great" or "crap" is so juvenile. The fact is it world great for some, not for others. This speaks to configuration differences, not JD. Is Supercurio's voodoo sound crap because it doesn't work on some configurations? Of course not.

To offer a different perspective, I don't consider something for which I control the parameters to be "not under my control". I'm not seeing how JD's behavior is any different than the phone automatically connecting to a wifi AP if you leave you're wifi on without you explicitly telling it to connect.
If JD simply enabled some vague power savings through turning the radios on and off, without knowing exactly what triggers the control, I'd stay far away from it too.
Sure, its turning radios on and off, etc. -- exactly as I've instructed it to. I'm in complete control.

I've been doubting myself too much

to the point where I'm thinking of returning my Galaxy Nexus. The phone is beautiful and slick but I can't deal with the battery life. I'm especially worried for when I go back to my University next week because I'm not sure if the phone would last while I'm going from class to class from 9 AM to 5 PM everyday and most rooms having low to no reception.
Before this phone I had the HTC Thunderbolt with the extended battery and it could last me the whole day while I was going from class to class and under heavy and constan usage (to the point where I never had to bother monitering it or caring about the battery). I would have auto-brightness on, GPS, Google Latitude, use Facebook app freeling, have Google+ uploading my pics as soon as they were taken, use Pulse, and be ALWAYS connected to 4G without worrying about the battery life.
Now with the Galaxy Nexus I'm forced to turn down my brightness, turn off GPS, turn off Latitude (you can see where this is going. Pretty much opposite of Thunderbolt), uninstall Facebook and disable Google+, minimize my usage, and use Wifi whenever possible to get through a few hours. I even uninstalled Google Voice today to see if that makes any difference. Really? Why am I crippling my smartphone? Why should I have to turn off 4G on a 4G phone to save battery?
I'm obviously an idiot for comparing a Thunderbolt that has an extended battery (2,750 mAh) with the Galaxy Nexus that has a normal battery (1,850 mAh). It's also my fault for trying to believe that battery technology would improve in about a year especially after the horrible battery life from the Thunderbolt; I thought that people would learn from other's mistakes. I thought that the Galaxy Nexus, Google's new and precious baby, would fix the woes from previous phones.
I've been following a ton of forums to find out if there's a fix and I've done a bunch of stuff (disable Google+, uninstall Facebook, etc) but there's barely a difference. Some people are suggesting that an update will come along to fix the battery but I'm tired of hearing that excuse. A software fix will only do so much. And 4.0.3 has been announced for a quite a while from Google. Why hasn't this phone been update to 4.0.3? Why did Google halt it from the Nexus S? Is there something that's running down the battery even more with that update? I don't want to go off topic but I just hate being kept in the dark and not understanding what is going on.
Here I am now typing this as I'm looking at my Thunderbolt while it charges. I'm planning on trying out a few ICS ROMs to see how they go. I'm just tired of second guessing myself. The Galaxy Nexus is a beautiful device, both software and hardware wise; the camera may not be the best but I love it's speed and ICS is just sleek as F. But I can't fully enjoy the phone with the mediocre battery life that I am getting.

I suggest stock 4.0.2 with ogdobber's jamesbond kernel which only has undervolt open and the gpu oc'ed. Probably need to turn off lte and stick to the CDMA. 3g CDMA isn't fast but it is passable and battery efficient.

even if battery tech does drastically increase 1750 mah will ALWAYS still be 1750mah it may take up less space or create less heat.. Mah is a measurement of milliamperes per hour

Try Paul O'Brien's excellent MoDaCo ROM - very impressive battery life and for $9 you get access to the kitchen. There's an update due today which will fix a flaky call issue.
Alternatively, hang on for 4.0.3 which is likely to bring some decent battery life improvements and bug fixes (though wouldn't surprise me if it's out for the Galaxy S2 first). I used to get 2-3 days of heavy use from my SGS2, get one of those and wait for ICS if you want better battery.

If your in places with no reception, put the thing in airplace mode or disable mobile data.
This phone gives me the best battery life vs my last 4 phones,... HTC hero, htc evo, Nexus s, and htc evo 3d...

Get an external battery. Since you are in uni I suppose you will be carrying around a bag anyway so it won't be too inconvenient to lug around. Just leave your phone charging during lunch and it should last the rest if the afternoon.

Go into your sstem/app folder and take off apps that you don't use. EVERYTHING you don't use. if you take a trip to that folder you're gonna see a lot of **** that you didn't know was there.
Do some cleaning and you should be fine with your normal usage. Also, try to flash a kernel so you can customize the governors and allow the phone to sleep more efficiently.
Coming from a thunderbolt, you should know how horrible battery life is for ANY stock android device...
There's no need to gimp your smartphone. I fluffing hate it when people say "just disable 4g, 3g, take auto-sync off, turn brightness all the way down, and only surf the web with wifi"

Also to put it in context...I'm using the epic 4g and I still have the stock 1500 mAh battery and the only time I lasted more than 4 hours on stock without having to charge was with a gngerbread leak.
But after a couple days of devs getting dirty and taking the time to clean up, your battery should last exponentially longer since people will have figured out what exactly drains the batter and how to stop it.
On the epic, it was the DRM. **** always ran in the background, then someone discovered it and about a month later it became so irrelevant since all the devs knew what code to get the drm to stfu until you needed it

Lol lay off the nerd 'roids. It like leaving all the lights on and air conditioning in your house and wondering why the bill is so high. It's like a lot of people are expecting their smartphone to automatically be efficient. Get a bigger gas tank if you need to run a marathon. Otherwise sprint efficiently with what you have.

The Galaxy Nexus is a beautiful device, both software and hardware wise; the camera may not be the best but I love it's speed and ICS is just sleek as F. Battery lasts me all day on the GSM version.
Folks, powering an extra radio uses extra power.
Moreover, the longer your data connection stays active, the longer your radio is active which is an even bigger drain. Since the LTE Gnexus devices are powering 2 radios (CDMA *and* LTE) simultaneously, and the second radio isn't as efficient as the standard radio that's part of the SoC package, this means that you need to ration your data usage if you want your battery to last.
Again, on the GSM version this isn't an issue because the radio is built into the SoC from the ground up, as well as it being only a single active radio at a time (GSM *or* UMTS/HSPA).
Software updates won't change that. It's a matter of physics. The LTE version may see some improvements here and there, but no software will counteract the effects of having to power 2 radios constantly.

Lol its definitely not like that. Its more like buying a new eco lightbulb that you use just like your old lightbulb but your bill is $80 more. Wut? LOL
But nah my epic 4g lasts me the whole day with 4g on (no access to wifi :[ ), auto-sync for gmail (i don't use facebook so its always the first app to go), blah blah blah. The only time battery is a problem is if I'm in a no sprint zone and forget to make my phone roam. Other than that, its used as a smartphone with 3+ hours of screen on time (voodoo color allowsyou to edit the gamm values and what not so its able to sip less power for the same brightness if that makes sense)
Seriously, root your phone and if stock is your thing, just install a custom kernel. Kernels handle the voltages and frequencies andhow your phone interacts with certain things so a custom kernel will almost ALWAYS have been optimized over stock. You will probably see a muc better result if you flash a ROM and Kernel, simply because custom roms are made to work without all the extra **** running in the background that no one wants

Just to clarify, make sure you KNOW what you're deleting and make backups anyway, just in case something you remove from there causes issues with another application that expects it to be there. Sure, you can remove a lot (if not most) of things from system/app without harm, but don't just go deleting random things unless you are SURE there will not be side effects.

Using EXTENDED Battery 2000 mAH, GSM version.
Stand by 2 days and 7 hours, screen on time was 3 hours and 18 minutes.
It still has about 17% battery life, which could easily translate to 1 hour or so screen on time

WOW! Best iv'e seen so far! I manage to get about 3h on screen time over one day of use, but 2 days and nights with already over 3h screen and still 17% to go!! Wow i do keep gps, sync, latitude, g+ turned on at all times though and always 100% screen brightness, no facebook.. gonna delete that acc soon.. any trix you use to get that bat,life?

Battery Drain

Is there an app or way that conserves the battery power. The phone is still completely stock but it received a firmware update through Tmobile and ever since then the battery gets drained by 4 pm (after all apps are x-ed out and phone is just in standby) the batter drops to around 30 percent... what can I do? I don't think it needs a new battery since its only a few months old... suggestions?

I dont know how much you use your phone and weather or not you watch movies or download files with Wi-Fi alot but it could seriously drain your battery if you leave things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, Brightness Up, or use live wallpapers.
If not, I would recommend checking your battery against someone elses because I've had a phone before that had a bad battery that could explode and caused me to have battery issues. Make sure your battery isnt swollen at all and if it is make sure you take it out and dont put it back in and go to a Battery+ store nearby and I'm sure they got one for your phone (they come with warranty).

Well my wife and I have the same phone and it does it to both. I don't have signal in my job since they have a Verizon antenna and it blocks our t mobile signal so I don't use it during the day which means the phone is just on stand by for the first eight hours. I make sure I turn off wifi, blue tooth, GPS etc and close all apps....but by the time I get out of work it's at 30-40% power.... both phones were bought this April so was hoping it wasn't/isn't a hardware issue and have to replace the batteries....

This is where the world of rooting and tweaking your android becomes extremely attractive.
There are ROMs that last 1 day + ( that's 24h+ hours of battery)
Only need two things....
1. Patience - to sit, read and closely follow instructions
2. Guts - to take a dive and risk ruining your phone. (Which doesn't happen if you have number 1)

The rest all needs rooting really.
2. Build.prop tweaks
3. UV with a custom kernel
4. Lowest screen brightness (doesn't require root)
5. Restrict yourself to 2G networks either using AOKP settings or a build.prop tweak
There are others but this is how I achieve great battery times mostly.

Why not try and find out what is using your battery up first? Try GSAM from the play store, its free for one, easy to use, it will show you what is draining your battery, there are a few paid ones as well, but try the free first , HERE is the direct link to GSAM.
or QR code, just scan it with phone.

That is a very weird situation and try a app that shows the apps using battery. Even check the stock android battery section in settings and see whats getting used. Your brightness should be first since it can really eat your battery if its turned up. I dont think its defective since both your phones are having the same problem but both my parents have the 4.0.4 firmware installed on their T989's without a problem and get decent battery power. I however am using a custom rom with kernel. Did you use the same battery for each phone? or each phone has the same problem with their own devices and their own batteries when getting updated to 4.0.4? If you used your battery on her's I'm assuming the problem may be the battery and you just got unlucky with a defective one.
P.S. I'm assuming 4.0.4 because thats the latest update to ICS for the T989 on T-Mobile.

The battery manager that comes with the phone identifies the display, but I've set it to lowest setting and have a dark background. And yeah both phones have their respective batteries which makes me think it's a software issue.. We just upgraded to the 2.3.6 ( I guess t-mobile is a but behind lol). But I going to try the juice defender tomorrow... It's just while I root the phone and get a custom ROM... (doing my homework before doing anything since it'll be first time)

Those apps wont really help, it basically does what you can do manually, turning off settings or putting them at low usage. Rooting is the way to go, its rather simple, once you do it, you will have wished you done it sooner. Trust me, I was in the same boat, I had just got my phone last december, the wife and I were in Vegas and my battery was horrible, I was taking lots of pictures and video, but my battery was dying. I had no way to charge it til we got back to the hotel, next day was same thing, horrible battery, this was all before ICS even was around for this device. When I got back home, I rooted my phone, to date, I have gotten a best 44 hours out of the phone. I ROM hop so I try out the variety, there is how to's and videos here and youtube, you will kick youself on how easy it truly is to root and flash. GSAM will show you in more detail what is using your battery the most, good luck with whatever you choose to do. There are many people here who can help you along the way, thats what this site is for.

Juice Defender will help a ton with you're screen being off for extended periods of time. Normally without it, I lose 30% at work without touching it. Today, I have lost 6%. The margin won't always be like that but it's a sizeable difference. Also, I have an app monitor application you can use to track rogue apps. There is also this app called Autostarts where you can disable an app from opening and it's really useful for apps that you don't need running in the background. Turning off auto sync will help as well IF you are okay with not getting every email in 5 minutes.

I use developer options and limit the apps to 4. I also under clock to 200. Stock rom.

i run cm10 and I really don't do anything but dim my screen most of the time.

Battery Life
Im running FK23 leaked rooted with stock kernel. I use powersave mode that comes in stock settings app.
I don't limit cpu. I use phone to txt, play games, youtube, facebook, twitter, and instagram and google play store.
I get around 14+ hours usage.
Also, I try to use WIFI whenever I can. I turn off GPS when not needed. I dont use 4G often as 3G is pretty good on FK23.
Lasts me from 7:45AM to 10:27PM as of now on 1%.

Wow, and how much do you use you're phone throughout the day? I'm just looking for new ideas because I do several things to increase my battery length, but I find myself around 50% in the first 2-3 hours of my 11 hour day. :/

I bought a cheap ($10) extended battery and cover, and a cheap ($9) TPU case/ At 14 hours, I still had 61% battery left. I can get a full legitimate day out of it running 2.3's, but I am going to try JB and ICS again and see where it's at.

I run KingKang with the JB tweaks package. I also modified my build.prop for both performance and battery life. Plus I toggle my 3G on only when I need it. If I have a WiFi signal I'll do the same with that. I average 17 hours but sometimes I get more than 24. Inverted apps not only look great, but help with battery too.

Honestly? #1 thing I do is stay on wi-fi as much as possible. Have gone almost 24 hours if I keep off 3G/4G and moderately use the phone/'net.

Where did you purchase the battery, and how much stronger is it? Also, what kind of case did you get, one that chargers your phone?

Just bought the cheapest 3500 mah battery with a back plate on Amazon, then the ONLY extended tpu case made by trexcell on Ebay. 20 bucks and I leave wifi gps and everything I use on all day long.

I switched back to Calkulin 3.0. Battery issues solved.
I tried to make ICS work for a couple months, but grew to hate the phone. It's a much better phone when it runs Gingerbread.

I did the same as you until the fk23 leak came out. Calkulin's v3.0 gb is amazing for battery life, smoothness, and functionality. I was never fully satisfied with any of the ics solutions, stock or custom.
Although the fk23 battery life isnt as good as calkulin, I'm still using it as my daily driver bc it's jellybean and cool, the phone runs well and smooth, and battery is good enough for me.
To answer the op's question, I do the following to help extend my battery life:
1. Leave off all data unless I need to use it (3g, 4g, wifi).
2. Turn of autosync and only sync as needed.
3. Remove bloatware and/or freeze any unnecessary apps (use GSM battery and OS monitor to find battery hog apps).
4. Leave off GPS unless needed.
5. Set screen brightness lower.

I've only owned this phone since after the ICS update, so never tried any GB ROM.
The ICS ROM I've had the most success with is Re-Calked, but FK23 takes it just a step further for me. I know some people have been reporting issues with FK23, but for me it has been rock solid and has been my DD for nearly a week now.
Blu Kuban also did well with battery life, but it is a little over-customized for my liking. I also had some stability issues with BK. I used sleshpics M'ICS build for a while too ... again, over customized for my liking. Good performance and relatively stable. Also, I have never been able to get 4G speeds on any other ROM/kernel like I'm seeing now.
If I'm in an area with a strong cellular signal, I can get over 24h with 3h+ screen time both on and off WiFi. If the cell signal is week, I burn from 5-7%/h so maybe 15-16h if I was there all day ... but that would obv. improve if I threw it into airplane mode.
I have frozen all of the bloatware apps, don't have Google Now activated. Other than that, I allow syncing to occur per default. I don't have FB app installed.
I use auto-brightness most of the time, and I have a dark wallpaper.

dim screen. stay on wifi. that is all.

Honestly, getting use to a dimmed screen made a HUGE difference!!

Is there ever a time when its better to not be on WiFi, of a WiFi is available?

I have had huge battery drain while being on wifi when availible 100% of the time I only use wifi when I need a faster connection

Surprisingly i use my phone alot for twitter, facebook, and texting.
And i still get around the time i wake up till the time i sleep!
