[Q] Xperia ZL Sleep of death - Sony Xperia ZL

I haven't seen anything about this posted. I have the Xperia ZL C6506. On Monday (3 days ago) my Xperia ZL went into the dreaded sleep of death. Details: I was running the stock .253 ROM. I had rooted my phone and made some mods the previous week but they were problematic so I went ahead and flashed the .253 firmware upgrade via PC Companion which removed root and all of my mods. No big deal. I could deal with it like that. The phone was fine for several days. Operation was normal. On this particular day, I took a couple of snapshots of a rose bush outside my house. Then, I hopped into my car and as I went to send a text before pulling off, I noticed that my wallpaper was disoriented. It was still showing in landscape mode though I was holding the phone in portrait mode. I tried turning the phone over a few times with the hope that the wallpaper screen would self-correct. It did not. It was completely stuck in the wrong orientation. So, I decided to power off the phone to correct the display. I powered off, waited a moment and tried to power back on. It never came back on! No matter what I did. I tried the battery reset button on the back: NOTHING, No response. I tried repair/update with PC companion. NOTHING. I tried SONY Update service. NOTHING. My PC doesn't even recognize the phone. The phone shows no indicator light when plugged in. Mind you, my battery was at 85% when this first occurred, but I went ahead and plugged it in for 2 hours just in case. I tried everything again. Still no response. I called SONY Support. The rep on the phone had me do everything that I had already done. I did it as requested, just in case. The end result was the same. After spending over an hour on the phone with him he said he thought that the battery was dead somehow.(?) He suggested that I leave the phone plugged in overnight and call back in the morning. So, that's what I did. The next morning the phone was still dead. The same as before. The indicator light still would not come on. I went through all of the procedures again just in case. Battery rest button. PC Companion repair. Sony update Service. Everything was completely the same as before. I called Sony once again only to go through the same routine with a different rep with the same results. Only this time, Sony issued a RMA. So, I sent my device to Sony repair. I am supposed to have a working phone in my possession within 14 days. Has any else had this sleep of death issue with their ZL?

Haven't heard about since they supposedly fixed it.
How long did you press the reset? It has 2 modes. But I guess you or the sony guy already knew ^^

Yes. I am familiar with the how the reset works. The Sony rep was too. Believe me. I once held it down for 5 consecutive minutes. Still nothing.

Got it back
Well. I received my ZL from Sony Repair after 8 days. Its working perfectly now. The weird part is that on the Sony repair invoice it stated that Sony found nothing wrong with the device. So, It just decided to start functioning on it's way to Texas.

This has happened over the years my x10 as silly As it sounds the charge released to fast to even keep. Enought to allow battery charge I cut a old non used extra charger held wires to battery in my hand for a mere 7 sec put back into phone refreshed immediately to different Rom problem fixed. Someone else showed online doing it on another Sony figures what did I have to lose just in case it happens again ours was caused by a Rom hosted with a virus embedded that had too be removed but by then alot of us had those issues. Hope it helps. Sony's are good but quirks it seems are around the same with different devices usually from messing with them even with those. WHo have done it a hundred times

Phone turns off by itself all the time

Hey guys my phone keeps turning off all by its self and then i have to hit the reset in the back. I've owned it for about a week and this has happened at least 6 times now. This can't be normal can it?
Mind ZL currently away for repair as it under warranty but have you tried installing new firmware via pc companion or flashtool and backup first. If the problem still persist the likely a hardware or battery fault then you no option but to be examined for repaired.

Re: Xperia ZL turns itself off
I am also having the same problem. last evening i was playing nova 3 game on my xperia zl c6502 when suddenly it turned off . i thought its because mine battery was dead. i charged it and when i again started playing the game it turned off in between of game just 5 min when i started it. this problem got even worse after that whenever i opened any app it turned off after staying alive for at the most 5 min. But i didn't experienced any problem when it was connected to charger. what to do! my parents are too strict if i tell them this problem they wont spare me. And also i don't get enough pocket money to do any repair on my own. any solution would be greatly thanked!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a similar issue where my phone would only work while plugged in. I had to replace the battery and it fixed it. You can get a new battery + tools on eBay for ~$15.

wet phone = dead phone

So Wednesday my wife dropped my Xperia Play (r800x) in a vat of chicken broth. She did NOT turn it off but she put it in a bag of Rice. About 3 hours later I found out about it and immediately pulled the battery and put it back in the bag. (4:00 PM July 3)
12:00 PM July 5. I take the phone out of the rice bag. Using alcohol pads I lovingly clean all exposed surfaces of the phone and squeeze some in to each button and press it multiple times to clean out any remaining gunk.
After doing this and letting it sit for 5 minutes to let the alcohol evaporate, I put the battery back in and pressed the power button. 1 short vibration and then NOTHING.
I connected it to my PC via flashtool and re-flashed the stock firmware disconnected and powered on. 1 short vibration and then nothing.
I connected to the SE update service and was told that I had modified software and it couldn't install. So I connected back to flashtool and relocked my bootloader. Connected back to SE update service and was told I had the latest software so I used it to RE-install. Powered on phone and Voila! short vibration followed by nothing. This is where I stand now.
It would appear that I can boot in to both flashtool AND fastboot, but I cannot power on the phone.
No LED's are lit when I press the power button nor when I plug it in.
I do however have a green LED in flash mode and a blue one in Fastboot.
If I don't boot to one of those and connect to my computer it is recognized as a sony media device. after a few minutes the device disconnects and reconnects to my computer. I can't see it in "My Computer" but I know because windows makes the device connected sound and the device disconnected sound.
What next? It's back in the rice bag until I get a better idea.
Maybe battery is faulty. Does it have charging animation when you plug it to wall charger?

I haven't actually tried it in a wall charger but I have tried it with both the extended battery that was in it as well as the original OEM battery.
I'll try plugging it directly in to the wall next.
Thanks.
It's plugged in directly to the wall using the actual Sony charge/sync cable. Still nothing. No charging animation. But I do have a Red LED.

Actually, i tought it was battery fault, but you test it with second battery, so i don't think battery is the problem.
Power it normally with power button (and get that single vibration), then, when you connect it to PC, is it in fastboot or flashboot mode? Maybe back or search key is stuck (short-cutted, so it's like always pressed)

Tried that:
"Device Connected with USB debugging off"
"For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode."

That message is just because you flashed stock firmware. But it means it start to boot normally.
Unless you know how to open phone and clean it inside, it's maybe better to go service. Good news is that is working (partially) and maybe only flex cable is damaged/short-cutted
I would highly recommend to take apart the phone have all the pieces in a bag of rice for 24 hours.... let it absorb all the junk, or at the least take it apart and use aclohol pads to clean it all up... then let it sit and air out for a while, the reassemble... retest.
Maybe try taking it apart and look for something that might be damaged

I am having a similar problem
On Wednesday, instead of making chicken I was helping a friend move on a nice, hot day. I was sweating like a filthy pig and my phone was in my pocket and would not turn on when I tried to do so. That night I really didn't know what was wrong and the next morning I tried to turn it on and the red LED would flash 3 times in succession. I looked this up and they said "dead battery." Sure enough, I charged it and it took a minute for the LED to turn on, and as it charged it was red, then orange, then green. But even once fully charged, when I tried to turn it on it would only vibrate, but no screen action whatsoever. Note: the battery was at around 60% when the phone quit responding. The next morning it was dead. I have had the phone for a year now and the battery will last me at least 2 days if I don't play games and such.
The next morning, when using the flashtool it would go into blue LED'd fastboot and green LED'd flash mode. I flashed the original 2.3.3 firmware and still nothing. I used PC Companion and it said "Problem: The phone/tablet contains modified software that cannot be updated. Details: Sony Update Engine failure (error 2003)." I contacted Sony and I am still awaiting a response. So, on friday I'm ready to take this turd into the Verizon shop and I turn it on and wait about 30 seconds and I get the SE logo. It loads just fine. I set it up and try to update, but it won't allow me. I'm thinking, great, I'm stuck with 2.3.3... until I turn the screen off and try to turn it back on. And again, nothing. No response. So I'm thinking I will bring it in Saturday. I re-lock the bootloader in some attempt to hide that I rooted the phone, and flashed the 2.3.3 again. Note: I rooted my phone in December and have had no problems. I didn't flash any ROMs or Kernels. I am a simple man.
Saturday morning, after my phone has been off for 10 hours, it turns back on again. Same thing happens. Also, I spent a while on Thursday, Friday, and today trying to research and solve this problem. My brain hurts. But alas, I only had it off for 3 hours and it turned back on, and it did the same damned thing when it turned off. It simply doesn't turn back on. I don't know if it's the screen, or if there is moisture under there, and I haven't researched taking it apart yet. Any advice? Sorry if I'm butting in on your post, but your problem is so close to mine aside from my phone actually coming back to life, partially.

Ryan I think you're as screwed as I am. Still I wouldn't expect your phone to be ruined by Butt Sweat. Yeah, putting your phone in your hip pocket to help someone move is a bad idea but I would expect Mechanical damage, not moisture damage.
At this point I'm thinking of just putting it up on Ebay as As is/For parts to see what I can get out of it. It's painful to think of giving up my sweet playstation phone but looking at it logically, in the year that I had it I only used the playstation controller 4 times.
The question I have is how to be sure that all of my personal data is off the phone since I can't boot it to verify.

Since you manage to flash stock firmware, all data is erased. Erase sd card on pc with some adaper, if you want to sell that sd card along your parts

Yeah, I figured it was mechanical, but I have a heavy duty trident case and I'm only assuming it was the butt sweat. This morning I tried to turn it on and nothing happened, so I said screw it and brought it back to Verizon. My main fear of bringing it back was them seeing that it was rooted and not being able to swap it out. But alas, the guy behind the desk just processed it, dropped my phone on the floor, hahaha, then set it up for me to get a replacement. It is under a year that I have had it, and I'm only paying for expedited shipping. I wish you the best of luck.
Hahahahahahahaha!!!!
You need to open it and replace ribbon connecting dispay with board.
I fallen with my phone to river (look for my posts she is alive after swimming), I removed battery on site by stripped down after back home. For me that ribbon started falling appart. I had same symptoms, pushed power button and feeling vibration, sometimeswhen reconnected I had whole white screen.
Bought that ribbon on e-bay, replaced and all working fine.
Good luck!!!

Xperia ION kees 'soft resetting'... Battery dead?

I have had my LT28h Xperia ION for about 1 year now, but as of last week it seems to have developed a fault. I have tried the usual hard resets, wiping the phone of all data etc and restarting completely fresh, but to no avail.
Every so often (usually when the battery gets below 70%, the phone spontaneously does what looks a like a soft reset. What I mean by this is the screen cuts out, then 2 seconds later the phone restarts itself, loading through the 'SONY' screen etc until it reboots. I would have normally said that I think the phone is simply restarting itself, but it looks more like a soft reset because whenever i purposefully soft reset my phone (power/up buttons for 5 seconds) the screen cuts to black, but does so by fading the screen to black, going through a yellowy/orange colour (as if the LCD screen is bleeding)... This is what the screen does whenever it does this restart too, leading me to think it is a soft reset.
Sometimes when the phone restarts, it says the battery has 1% left, although there is well over 50% (if i turn the phone off manually and turn on again, sometimes it will say the true 50-70% battery status) and sometimes it says it has the correct battery %.
It usually does these restarts when I am doing something, like taking a photo/video or using an 'intensive app'.
I am using the latest 4.1.2 official OTA software, with a rooted phone (I have tried removing the root, but it still has the same problem so re-rooted it).
If anyone has a similar problem, or knows something I don't, I would be very grateful for your replies. I am praying it is not the battery, as ION's have stupid 'non-removable' battery's, and I don't know if I can be bothered taking apart the phone etc...
Thanks in advance
James

I have tried factory resetting, Flashing a new FTF with flashtool and still it keeps soft resetting. It does seem like a battery problem, so I drained it completely of all charge, then plugged it in to the wall charger over night. Now all it does when plugged in to charge is strange:
Red LED comes on as if it is charging, then 5 seconds later the LED turns off, phone starts to boot (screen comes on but does not even reach the 'SONY' bootup screen), then after 2 seconds it turns off again... then the red LED comes on again for 5 seconds, turns off, screen comes on for 2 seconds, then it turns off again... repeat...
I am going to leave it plugged in to see if it eventually reboots, but if anyone has any ideas that may help, I would be gratefull!
(P.S. I have tried hard resetting, and hard powering off by holding power and +volume key for 5 and 10 seconds respectively, but it just restarts back into this loop)
thanks
Bump... Phone has charged for 2 days straight, it stays on a solid red light, and it is completely unresponsive when unplugged.
When it is plugged in, I can try and do the hard reset, but it then just goes into the same loop as before. chargind (red LED), then not charging/booting up for 2 seconds, then restarts to charging etc...
It just doesn't seem to be able to get enough charge from the wall charger to fill the battery enough for the kernel to kick in..
A little update, after fiddling around with button combinations (this time by holding power/volume up/volume down all at once), I can get the phone to be recognised by the computer as an SEMC Flash Device by device manager. When I open up flashtool though it says:
-Device Connected with USB Debugging off
-For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode
This is odd because I always have USB debugging ON.
I cannot do anything with the device in Flashtool, OR Sony PC Companion, and I cannot boot into fastboot/flashmode at all, the phone is still just unresponsive to volume down when I plug into the computer, and also volume up etc...
Looks like my phone is completely bricked! Booooo
Any advice would be met with smiley emoticons!!!
It is the battery
Hi, I had exactly the same issue, the phone used to restart like a soft reset, then it came nack with only 1% of battery.
As Sony only knows to say "Repair the soft with PC Companion" which obiously is not the problem, I decided to buy a brand new battery considering that I am from Panama, and I had to buy it through ebay, the location of the item was China, so I had to way 1 month to get my battety.
I changed it, and tataaan the phone worked without any problem... I sold it a week later. But yes dude it is the battery I can tell u for sure it is 100% the battery

Well it doesn't sound like the same problem as mine, but I just changed my battery (it's quite fiddly, but if you are good with your hands, you can follow step by step guides on youtube), and then it worked perfectly! It is most likely your battery.... FYI you can get Android 4.4 kitkat now for your ion.. I have it, its great... just search the forums!

Thanks for that final post. I am having identical issues that you have described in other posts. The SONY website goes nowhere on the issue.
So, what's a good price to pay for a battery? And, how long did it take to get it?

Thanks for the tip on the tools. Just ordered one from China thru eBay for $25 CAD with shipping. There are cheaper ones, but no tools.
I'll reply to this thread once I fix it.
can anybody tell me the reiable link to order battery...
hi,
i have the same issue....can anybody tell me the reliable link to order a battery for my xperia ion LT28i.....
i got confused when tried to search on google...
i am fron Mumbai, India....
and also tell me if its easy to change the battery myself......from the youtube videos it looks like i have to dissamble the phone totally.....this is terrifying for me as i am not an engineer (i am a doctor)?
any video link which shows how to replace battery easily.....without dissambling that much of things....?
Not easy to change, but possible if you follow the youtube video.
I received the battery in exactly 3 weeks and took about an hour to change. I tore the audio jack from the sim card module so I was without sound until I replaced that part as well. Be careful.
There is an issue with the charging system of this phone. My new battery is starting to fail, I think. It has difficulty accepting a charge if I let it go down to 1%.
I have another year on contract so I'm thinking of buying another new battery.
This is obviously a defect.

LG G4 won't turn on

I have a G4 with Verizon and on Sunday I powered it down to swap my battery. I had about 30% left on the battery in the phone and a fully charged spare. I put the second battery in and since then it will not power on. I have tried both batteries and connected it to the power adapter... nothing happens (no lights, sounds, or vibrations). I called Verizon and they are sending me a refurb replacement but I'll need to send this one back once that device is up and running. I want to see if anyone has ideas on how to eliminate my data. I do have a SD card with my pictures so that's fine. I just want to erase everything else.
I have been playing with the phone for the past day and a half and I have gotten it to power on for a brief moment here or there. It is very random and sometimes it will show the LG splash screen and then it goes back out. I also have had it vibrate like it is turning on only not to show anything. A couple of times it has vibrated for over a minute straight before cutting back out. And while it was sitting on my desk it was rebooting itself several times earlier today until giving up. Also, when I plug it into my PC I do hear the Windows sound that you get when connecting a drive. But no drive letters appear. I am hopeful that I can get it to turn on long enough to erase everything. The phone is not rooted and is using the latest Android OS (I believe it was 5.1.1) that Verizon sent out in November.
I did not notice any other issues recently and I have swapped batteries dozens of times and never had this problem. It was powered off properly prior to this all happening. If anyone has any ideas of ways I can try to get it back on that would be great. Thank you!
Edit: Also, pressing the volume down and power together does nothing. Only way I have ever got the phone to respond in the past 24 hours is holding power for 20+ seconds and maybe it will work. But then it turns back off.
same here. dunno what to do since i bought mine used on swappa!
Sound like the hardware problem other users have had, including myself just about 2 weeks ago. If this is the case try putting the phone in the freezer for 10 to 20 minutes (I know it sounds crazy) but it worked for me and some others. I was able to power the phone up long enough to get it into recover (pressing the power button + volume down) long enough for me to wipe my data before sending it back. When I put the phone in the freezer I left the batter in and the back cover on.

The phone is still not quite a year old. Contact LG as they have a 1 year warranty. You are running out of time though. They never asked me for a receipt as they knew within a year if it died the fix was on them.
LG G4 is a very vulnerable phone and LG’s Head of US Marketing has accepted that the LG g 4s manufactured before september 2015 had its own set of problems. Follow this guide https://appuals.com/fix-lg-g4-wont-turn/ in order to resolve your phone issues. If this doesn't help, you can send the phone for repair or replacement.

z5 premium sudden death

About a week ago, with my battery at 39% i plugged my z5 premium in to charge and it never came back on again.
I have tried all the usual tricks, pwr and vol up, removing the battery, the sim slot button, and pretty much any combination of buttons and still nothing.
It will charge just fine, but will only reach the white sony xperia screen and no further. it will flash up the white screen then go black with the notification light flahing red 3 times and then staying red. once or twice it has started to load the 'powered by android' screen and then just blackness. If i hold vol down and plug into laptop the notification light will turn blue and it shows up as 'adb android device'. Thats the extent of the life left in it.
So what would people suggest as my next step? is it still possible to recover the data thats on the phone or is it a total loss?
I had exactly the same problem over a month ago. I am pretty sure it happened because of liquid damage to my motherboard.
I managed to bring it back to life by flashing with flashtool and ticking ALL wipes and resets available.
It worked fine until it died for good weeks later (I had left it to charge overnight and there were no signs of life the next morning). After a quick visual hardware inspection (aka teardown) I concluded that the only solution was to replace the motherboard. I did just that, and every other component works fine.
TL;DR: Give it a go, flash with all wipes and resets offered by flashtool (you'll lose all data) and hope for the best. You better be looking at prospective phones in case your mobo goes kaput.
EDIT: wow I'm only 4 months too late haha. Pretty sure he has a new phone already xD

If your computer cant detect the phone, it could be one of the following:
- Bad usb cable
- Bad usb charging port on the phone
- Dead battery
- Dead motherboard
If your computer doesn't make any sound when plugging the phone in, then missing drivers shouldn't be the problem and you should troubleshoot each of the possibilities I mentioned.

2-minute reset.
I thought mine was bricked after only 2 months. I came across this fix on the Sony website and it fixed mine where it could work again. I had to factory reset it. It was just locking up and freezing. Be sure to hold that button in for 2 solid minutes. I watched the clock. Longest 2 minutes of my life.

I am just adding a list of similar threads that have been recently posted regarding this strange sudden death issue, battery not charging, weird non-software bootloop.
Sudden Death
InfiniteBootLoop
Unable to Turn On
My Phone Just died (april2019)
Not charging (user is rooted though)
I think i will also collate many of the similar threads into titles and post it as a new thread. As this forum is extremely bloated and repetitive whilst simultaneously being confusing for some users.
I guess Z5P is old now, but trust me the XZ3 is complete garbage so support for Z5P should be much cleaner and better organised now.
Any news for this?
