[Q] UMS? WTF? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Ok, so I recently got an S3 and I've been searching everywhere for a definitive answer. How do you enable Mass Storage on the S3? I've tried downloading the S3 UMS apk file, didn't work, I've tried using Terminal Emulator to enable it that way, didn't work. I am currently rooted running an AOKP ROM. For the love of Pete and his magic dragon, can someone please tell me how to enable this? It's annoying having my phone set as a Media Device. I'm not able to organize my music and such the way I like and getting the stupid "error" message that I can transfer my music, but it may not play properly is beyond annoying. Thanks all.

I share your pain. This was so simple on my Captivate years ago and after having the S3 for several months I still cannot find a good way properly sync my music and playlists. It is really ridiculous. Somebody out there must have a fix or a workaround that works or know of a kernel that supports it, hopefully they will post in this thread because it really pisses me off.

The Galaxy S3 doesn't support UMS, only MTP. In fact, starting when google released ICS/HC, UMS was on its way out in favor of MTP storage. I feel your pain...I would rather have UMS but it's google's choice to ditch mass storage and use MTP.

After further searching, still nothing. This is dumb. Obviously, the masses want the UMS back, they can push an update or something out to enable it. If nothing else, we should at least be given the option of MTP or UMS. I mean, it's Android. Android is know for it's options. Why are we being limited now?

Another CM10 question...AFT? I can't connect...

Okay, one other curious question...On CM10 7/29 build...is anyone getting Android File Transfer to work? Yes, I'm on a Mac, but it was working fine before, granted I had to call it a camera instead of MTP, but it worked just fine. Now that I got a 32GB SD, I'm wanting to transfer everything over, but now when I plug it in, I get nothing. Any ideas?
So, I've flashed all the roms on my SD card...CM9, CM10, Ultimatum, AOKP, now I'm on Paranoid Android(liking this one best because it's a mix of CM10 with more stuff working so far..) but anyway. I noticed on all of the JB-based roms, Android File Transfer no longer works. This wouldn't be an issue because I could flash Ultimatum, which is ICS-based, right? Still doesn't work. I've read around and some people say Samsung updated something that broke AFT for mac...but I'm just not sure. I just got a new 32GB SD, so I want to move the stuff from my 8GB to this one...but using wireless solutions will take hours on end...and I'm not even sure which one of these works the best. Any ideas?
I believe the file transfer on android does not like to work with cm10 on this phone and its not an issue that seems too high on the devs list because of the few amount of mac users. Really sucks but meh, honestly if i want to transfer stuff i boot up windows through bootcamp and do my thing
My suggestion is, flash a stock based rom and just move the majority of the stuff using mac and then for smaller/more periodic stuff after that you could just use a wireless transfer thing. Because for me, after my initial sync of all my music i usually only sync photos or a few songs at a time so wireless syncing wouldn't be too big of an issue.
Indeed, I found a workaround to use CyberDuck to transfer stuff...of course, my first big transfer is going to take hours, which sucks---I wish they would look at this issue...even if Mac users are the minority, that's a pretty big issue-Normally I wouldn't have issue with either dual boot or Parallels, but I'm broke at the moment so I'm running a G5 iMac. While it runs, you can imagine how slow it can get, since this is pre-aluminum models... I tried flashing a stock-based rom (Ultimatum) and it still didn't work. I've heard that a Samsung minor update might have broken it, but I didn't get any OTA updates. I'm just glad CyberDuck/SSHDroid let it work just like my jailbroken iPhone works with CyberDuck the same way, so I'm familiar with it. I guess I'll need to go back around the forums I was searching for answers on and post a tutorial on using CyberDuck with the S3.

[Q] Enough is enough! Need help with galaxy note 2 bugs/issues please!

Ok, firstly I apologize if these have been covered before but I need help with a few issues with my galaxy note 2 that Ive sure you guys have noticed as well. Im no expert but I have had android phones for a few years so I do know the basics. Im thinking it might be time to root/rom or whatever my phone because I think the issues I am having are bugs in the software though I have never attempted such a feat, havent really had a reason to until now. I absolutely love this phones, its super awesome, one of the best ive had but there are a few nagging issues I have that Im not sure if its just me or the software, usually Im pretty good with tech stuff. Have a samsung galaxy note 2 on att network android version 4.1.2 and ive searched around a little and best I can tell the newer version i have has changed some menu options which I cannot find and caused or not fixed some of my other issues.
1. I am unable to adjust the locations of the options on the screen when you pull it down from the top such as wifi, bluetooth, airplane mode and whatnot. Near as I can tell it was possible to organize them in the order you wanted before the update that added multiscreen support and it seems multiscreen support options under settings has taken place of the setting to adjust these icons and I cannot find anywhere to change them. Have you guys noticed this? how is it possible to change them or are they stuck now?
2. The media player auto playing when connecting to my bluetooth sync system in my ford F150 is kinda neat but highly annoying as it auto starts the player when it connects whether I want it to or not, and usually I do not because I rarely use my phone to play audio via bluetooth and when i do its through my Sirius XM app or pandora or some other media player and its highly annoying having to end the default media player and start play on my preferred app every time I shut off and restart my truck, or disconnect and reconnect bluetooth if you prefer. Is there a way to get this default app to NOT auto start playing every time it connects to bluetooth? I have been unable to find such an option and its getting on my nerves and draining my battery when I dont even want it on, GRRR!!
3. Pretty sure this one is a software bug/change but every android phone Ive ever had auto sets a 15 minute time reminder when I enter a calendar entry, which Ive gotten used to and is awesome as far as im concerned because an entry without a reminder is worthless. I have to turn on a reminder manually every time and have not been able to find any setting to change to revert this back to the normal experience that im used to on my at least 4 previous android phones. I have gotten used to manually turning it on now but its still annoying and i would like to be able to skip this step to save time as I use the calendar reminder features daily.
Thats all i can think of for right now, but im sure theres some I forgot. Hoping some of you experts can hook me up with some easy fixes to these issues or point me in the right direction of how to resolve them if possible, thanks a million!
Whew!!
One hell of a post there ...
An easy solution to the majority of your device issues would be...
Flashing back to the factory shipping rom...
It is pushed to the device via Odin.
I believe the rom is UCALJ2...
In the development section, under the "everything" thread, you will find the rom listed above.
There you will also find Odin, its PC drivers, and instructions to restore the device to pure stock.
The recent updates to the device will be removed, and following the Odin flash, the device will be pure stock and have no personal data...(fair warning)
From that point, to prevent the updates from appearing again, the update application must be frozen by using titanium backup or an app capable of rendering the update application null.
This process must be done with care ...and not before you understand what you are doing.
The steps in those threads are complete, but you must learn them first.
Happy reading and learning ....and happy flashing ....g
Your right. ..time to root it and add a custom rom. The new Jedi is awesome. . (shameless plug. ...lol)

Here is my thread to get back to stock. Enjoy

[Q] Stock Galaxy S4 and Kenwood DDX616

This is not my first Android phone. I recently upgraded from an HTC HD2 running a flavor of Energy Sense 2.3 to this Galaxy S4. Today is the first time I have tried to access the music on my SDCard using a USB connecting to the S4 and have encountered some BS propriatary Samsung block telling me that I am not allowed to access a device that isn't Windows blah blah compatible. WTF?? Never seen this garbage before.
I haven't gotten around to rooting the phone yet...well, because I just haven't. But this almost caused me to toss the thing out the window at 70mph.
What did I miss?

Maybe post what you did to remedy the situation for people that might run into this problem in the future?
What's wrong with Bluetooth?
DDX-616 should have BT connection. USB connection is no-go with kenwood and Samsung.
I have a DDX-719 and always use BT connectivity for music and phone calls.

I assumed I hadn't gotten any responses because the answer was obvious. Good or bad, people here tend to ignore rants or stupid questions.

The 616 does not support bluetooth audio streaming connections without an overpriced adapter. Only hands free phone. So in the past I have connected my HD2 or G1 through USB. The receiver would treat the phone as a Thumbdrive and all was good. I assumed the S4 would do the same.
Wrong!
The older Android phones would connect using USB Mass Storage function and the receiver would read all files up to the first 4 gig in the Music directory on the SD card. It ignored anything past that limit. Samsung in their screwed up idea of how things should work have disabled this feature and instead use the MTP function which is slower and requires the appropriate drivers to be installed on the device accessing the phone. In other words it restricts directory access to authorized computers thus breaking something that wasn't broke in the first place.
So after identifying the problem I determined the only fix was to finally root the phone and then to use the apps available to activate USB Mass Storage. Here is a link to the technique that I used http://www.android.gs/enable-the-usb-mass-storage-for-samsung-galaxy-s4/
The only limitation is that I have no access to internal storage. But I'm okay with that.
Cheers!
Wasn't aware of the DDX-616 not supporting BT, well at least you found the fix. Sharing your solution will help someone else so don't hesitate to share your future findings.
Pp. Good.

Not really, you just have to keep bumping your question until someone points it out. Over 5 million members, active or not, there are lots of threads and questions can go unanswered in a heartbeat. Just need to keep them resurfacing.
Just an update. The process listed here does allow me to connect the S4 to my receiver in USB Mass Storage. But it doesn't work automatically. I have to open the Mass Storage app, open the menu for that ap and hit force SD Mount. This causes the Samsung OS to get out of way and the 616 to mount the extSdCard for reading.
Would like an app that does it automatically..

Any way to temporarily Disable SE on galaxy S3 with android 4.4?

Hello. I have a Galaxy S3 (SGH-I747 on Rogers Canada) with android 4.4 - stock/not rooted. The other day I hooked up my S3 to my laptop using a USB cable. My laptop is running Win XP SP3. I COPIED ALL the pictures from the phone to the Laptop. The pics were visible on BOTH my phone and my laptop when I finished the transfer. I am guessing it used Windows Media as the transfer medium as Kies was not running. While the phone was still linked to the Laptop I thought I would just delete the ones off the phone that I didn't want. I did so. I then unhooked the phone from the laptop. Ouch!!! The pictures I had deleted from the phone were missing from BOTH the phone and the laptop. First I checked the laptop trash bin. Nothing there. I then tried using the Recuva undelete software on my laptop disk as I thought there should be a deleted copy on the disk as they were visible on screen before I unplugged my phone. It recovered some 94k plus jpg's and I spent more than a day scanning them for the ones I needed. Nothing there. So I thought I needed to run an undelete on the phone. HA HA to that!!! It seems that in the android developers great wisdom the phone is no longer considered a mass storage device when hooked to a computer but is a media device. MY interpretation but something like that. Next I did a BUNCH of reading and made a bunch of phone calls for advice. I tried all kinds of tricks. I tried a number of android undelete programs. I had the USB debugging enabled but all the programs I tried didn't recover any deleted jpg's. Even the programs that said they could. It turns out that the phone HAS to be linked as a mass storage device with a drive letter for the android recovery software to work to recover jpg's. It seems to be able to find other file types but not jpg's.
Now here is the interesting part. I tried linking the phone to my desktop (XP SP3 also) and my laptop dozens of times hoping something would change. I believe that once on my desktop and once on my laptop it showed up as a mass storage device. I say "I believe" because I was so conditioned to it NOT showing as a mass storage device that both times I had already clicked on the icon that releases the phone from the computer before I realized there was a drive letter there. Anyway, the time on my laptop that it happened was around the time I had run one of the android file recovery programs. The program had not found any jpg files but when it finished my phone had a message something like "SE has been disabled". blah blah blah. I did a BUNCH more reading and researching about SE on my phone. The best I can figure is that it is a security enhancement designed to stop programs getting at, or changing things in, other programs on the phone and is set somewhere in the policies file - where ever that is.
My question is - Is it possible to temporarily disable SE so I can try and get my pictures back? Thank you, Derek-j

This is the international i9300 area, to save you posting this long message again I will get a Mod to move it for you to the i747 area but I wish you the best of luck.
SElinux stands for "security enhanced Linux" and turning it to permissive will not do a lot I believe. However this app can enable UMS on your phone again. Here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mohammadag.samsungusbmassstorageenabler
Thank you...

Oooppss...not going to work. First off...my phone is stock and this requires rooting. I don't know much about rooting and don't have a problem trying it but I suspect that would likely over-write some or all of the deleted jpg's I want to recover thus defeating the purpose. The other and absolutely CRITICAL thing is that it does NOT enable USB for internal memory. You'd think that the GOOGLE developers would know better than to remove that important feature, especially in an (upgrade???). I had even thought of going back to one of the older versions but again I think that would destroy some of the file entries and delete the very pics I am trying to get back....
I REALLY DO APPRECIATE your trying to help though.
Have a FANTASTIC week. Derek-J.
So BACK TO SQUARE ONE...Anyone know how to temporarily disable the SE feature?

Yea there is not much you can do without root, sorry for your troubles

[Q] anyone using linux and got the M8 show up as MTP device in a music app?

Firstly, apologies for the excessively long thread title...
So, after a struggle i managed to mount the M8 as an MTP device in using Dolphin in Kubuntu. Not perfect, and a bit buggy, but it generally works and allows me to transfer files etc.
But, i cannot get the M8 to show up in ANY music app, and believe me i think i've tried them all! Generally i use Amarok, sometimes Clementine or Guayadeque, and all are supposed to support MTP. I've tried them and many others, searched the web for answers (there seems to be very little out there with regard to the M8) and no luck. I CAN use gMTP, but whilst i'm grateful to the developers i'd rather use a proper music app where i can sort a playlist to export etc.
I wonder if anyone else has managed this? Is there some obscure udev rule that solves the puzzle, or am i flogging a dead horse?????
Cheers!
[edit] just checking before i posted this and the phone decided to show up (briefly) in Clementine, but i cannot write to the device....?
Did you ever manage to find a solution to this?
