What data? Apps? Use Titanium Backup to backup your apps and restore them on AOKP.

Once you unlock the bootloader everything is wiped so as above just backup first.
Since you are still locked and probably not rooted search using ADB to backup, unlock your bootloader, restore your data than use Titanium Backup to backup all apps / data after that!
what about texts? does it backup in titanium?
Backup your whole stock rom from clockwork, then wipe everything install aokp let it boot up, now back into recovery>backup&restore>advanced restore>restore data

Titanium does a lot of things, but backing up texts unfortunately it doesn't do.

OK, THIS sounds like an awesome method!
so does it backup apps? settings? app data? texts?
and I assume nothing in storage....

It backs up the entire ROM, everything. Apps, texts, call lists all settings for every app, program, launcher, lock stock the ****in' lot!
Right its a full backup, but asking for the purpose of installing a custom ROM.....question is when I hit "recovery>backup&restore>advanced restore>restore data" what is it actually restoring?
Your apps and dalvik cache essentially.
I have eagerly came into this post.Cos I thought that someone would explain about installing the AOKP. But none of them did N gave the links, Please if someone could help me. Thanks

Hi everyone,
I got a question. Is it a must to wipe before flashing a rom? For example, I'm on a rom and i want to flash another rom. Why is it a must to wipe it? What happens if I don't wipe it and flash a new rom?
Kind regards,
Semih
Its not a must but its highly recommended if you don't sometimes you'll get bootloops, sometimes you'll get random crashes and apps not working or you could get very lucky and everything might work fine. You should at least wipe the /cache partition, you won't lose any data.

if you are on the same rom and the dev updates then most of the times no it is no need to update. if you are trying different roms though then yeah best to do is wipe. if you go into ARHD thread in the first page there is a script called superwipe. download that and flash it before you flash a new rom and that will do all the wipes for you. or just do it the old fashion way in recovery and reason why to wipe sometimes so you do not have old system data from previous roms

Also make sure 100% you have your Rom on your sd as you can't mount sd in recovery and after running there is no system.

And also a backup..that is the most important thing...went through a lot of threads that i read and most of the people on some threads ask on how to restore using RUU cause they do not have a backup of their stock rom..So please always make a backup my friend
It's not. They call that a "dirty flash". I've never done it but I've heard that it's not advised.
I want to flash a new rom, but i don't want to use titanium backup to restore my apps, thats to much time. And if I wipe it, my settings will lost. So, i don't want to do it. But it seems that I have to do it, otherwise i'll get some errors and bootloops etc. I thank you all for your fast reply. I'll wipe my phone
A nandroid backup. If I do it while on the old rom, can I restore it on the new rom? not an updated rom, just another rom of another developer..

Yeah thats fine, I usually flash the old rom first then restore the backup when coming from cm9 or miui to stock to avoid bootloops etc.

What exactly does a Nandroid backup. Is it like creating a Hard Drive image for windows?
After installing CM9RC I want to go back to my previous stock configuration. If I restore my phone with a nandroid, will I recover everything previously installed on my phone? I am assuming the stuff in the sdcard folder gets excluded from the wipe right?
Thanks in advanced,
Aphis
Yup a Nandroid is more or less like a restore point. And yes excluding sdcard.

Yes. Note that a nandroid backups up the system partition, the boot partition, the recovery partition and the userdata partition (excl. /sdcard). It does not back up your radio or bootloader, so if you change those, you will have to flash them separately.

EDIT: Ninja'd by WiredPirate.
Thanks for the quick response.
That would mean that if before creating the nandroid I had permanently installed CWM and rooted the phone, restoring the nandroid would keep my phone with CWM and root right?

its a snapshot. whatever you had at that moment when it was created is what you will have when you restore to it.

My friend got new Note 2.. Now we are going to root it and swap storage so we can use External SDCard as primary storage. but before that. I want to take backup of current original ROM / All phone data.
After I root thereis in recovery mode.. There is option of backup data.. is that right way? or use ROM Toolbox.. thats the right one?
I need complete current phone backup.. including.. OS and all rest original phone data.
Regards
Both are the same. I think ROM Toolbox restarts in recovery mode anyway.

In short, it will make full backup right, in case of breakdown, anything goes wrong.. I can restore it and it will be as it was earlier factory settings.. right?
Yes nandroid backup will backup your system, data, cache etc... It will restore phone as it was if you decide to use it.

and don't forget to backup your EFS partition. That is the single most important thing you want to do. Use EFS backup/restore http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922473.

Nandroid backup means which we are talking right? backup for recovery mode.??
Hello HTC 10 users! I just got this device and thoroughly enjoying the speed and features. I got it s-off, Lees v2.41 rom loaded and using the team viper pnp balanced. Before installing the pnp I wanted to make a backup since I haven't done one since I got the 10. I noticed my data backup is 25GB. I don't even have 4GB used up by the internal space on the 10. In comparison my old m8 ARHD v53.1 backup is around 6GB , that rom was lolipop and using TWRP 3. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Are you sure you are using the latest twrp?
i've not even unlocked yet, but that smells to me like it's looking at an encrypted partition, which it should be, but i can't speak to whether or not that's normal (assuming not). may try posting this ? in the TWRP thread.
That's a huge backup, roughly double the size of a typical backup for me (12.59GB, including boot, data, & system). What all are you choosing to backup when you make a backup?

I forgot my startup is encrypted. I kept on hitting cancel before I mounted the partition found on the s-off youtube tutorial. Thanks for letting me know.
The Data only part is 25gb?
My Backups are normaly 8gb, in TWRP 3.0.2-5
3.7gb System Image
around 4.5gb User Data
64mb Boot and 64mb Recovery
Did you activate compression in the TWRP settings?

You are using a really old version of twrp. Please use the latest, which is 3.0.2-6.

What are you suppose to chose in your back-up? I back-up system, system image, data, and boot. Is that a correct back-up?
Sorry for the noob question as I am new to HTC.

Yes because that was on my HTC One m8. I'm on the latest version on the HTC 10. I already figured it out that the backups were copying the full encrypted data partition if I didn't enter the password.

That makes sense. Starting with 3.0.2-4 TWRP has been able to decrypt data partition. I missed the part where you said you were hitting cancel on the pin prompt.
Is there an option in twrp that allows me to switch between encrypted and decrypted data partitions?

That's controlled by your rom. Natively, Android M requires encrypted data partition, but some custom ROMs allow you to use un-encrypted data. I believe that there is also a script that you can flash in TWRP to allow stock rom to be un-encrypted, but you'll have to fish around in the ROM/Development section for that.
To decrypt your data partition, you have to flash a rom that supports un-encrypted data (or the zip file I mentioned above) and then format (NOT WIPE) data partition in TWRP.

System and System Image are the same.
For Custom ROM's System is fine, if you want to take OTAs on Stock ROM you need a System Image.
I almost never backup Data as every app should have a Cloud Save feature and i prefer to wipe my phone every few months to get rid of stuff i never use.
Mainly before flashing a Custom ROM or playing around i backup UserData aswell.
And yeah, always backup Boot when you backup System, only takes 64MB so doesn't really matter.
