Discussion of battery life after linux 3.4 upgrade - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

It seems that in general battery life has taken a hit for those on a 4.2.2 ROM with the new 3.4 kernel, though the extent of the difference varies. For me personally, I used to get <1.5% per hour drain at idle. After the 3.4 upgrade, with NO other changes, I get around 4% per hour. When I view the BBS stats the number of wakelocks/alarms don't really seem all that different, so it looks like the 3.4 kernel just uses more juice to do the same amount of work. Undervolting doesn't seem to help much, if at all.
I've brought this up in other threads but it wasn't very productive, so I figured it might be worth it's own thread. Does anyone have any idea what exactly might be causing the increased drain? Has anyone figured out and tips/tricks for getting back to 3.0 level battery usage?

What rom/release and 3.4 kernel/release are you using? Which ones have you tried?

I am seeing the same thing as you. I use to get really good battery life during standby and now it isn't very good. However, some time (for a couple of hours) it will be back to what it used to be (i can see the slope in battery usage flattens out), but then it just goes back to being crap.
I hope somebody can offer some help...

I've tried pretty much every release of task's AOKP both with and without Ktoonsez's kernel. Battery drain has been about the same with both kernels.

I am on task and ktoonsez latest. I average 24-30 hours of battery life with 4 or more hours of screen time.

Change your governor and scheduler. Those can make a huge difference. I prefer on demand, you should experiment with each scheduler. Maybe try one scheduler each day

I use ktoonservative. It's hard to believe that any of the others would significantly increase my battery life, but I suppose it's worth a shot...

Fresh Toast vs. ffolkes' Kernel

So, there you have it. Aside from stability, my main concern is conserving battery life. In fact, I'd sacrifice the 30FPS unlock to conserve 3+ hours of battery life if need be.
Which is better for stability and battery life in your opinion.
Also, please post what ROM you are currently using.

Haven't tried ffolkes yet I can say I got 22 hours out of fresh 26 with underclock while screens off
I have used DC, Baked Snack, and fresh. I think fresh is the most stable of the three. DC with JIT enabled causes reboots at times, but they are rare. DC with JIT disabled is pretty stable. Baked Snack sometimes gave me odd problems, but it is pretty fast.
I think I had best battery life with DC, about 35 hours. My brother reportedly used his phone for two days straight playing games without having to charge it. He uses DC with DCConfig set to Battery Saver. This was with an undervolted kernel without using overclock. Had to switch from undervolted at a later point because it caused HUGE amounts of stability issues. (Ffolkes' kernel)
Fresh with autostarts is pretty good with battery life. I haven't tried the latest version. Using a perflock disabled kernel and setCPU works wonders for fresh and battery life.
Baked Snack was an odd one. My battery life was inconsistent. All I can say with that one.
My thoughts on the three ROM's that Jykinturah mentioned are the same. Using DC 3.2.3 with ffolkes using set cpu, I charge my phone about as often as my girlfriend who has a blackberrry: every 2 days.

in the ffolkes thread there is a link to an app called EvoSwitch. It allows you to change a value called T2 (it has something to do with frequency I guess) which for some people (including me, with an 002 bought on evo release day) actually allows the fps to change.

Hi guys, i've been looking into many threads and reading a lot of posts and asking a lot of questions. however i know that their is not for sure answer to this but i would like to see what you guys believe to be your best kernel for battery and performance. i have seen people say it is Godmode (v9), Tiamat v4.1.0, Tiamat v3.3.7, and Savaged-zen v2.2.1. (ALL of these ARE with SBC-OFF). i just want to know what is you best kernel at the moment for your evo with decks or cm7.
Side Question: what is the difference between the governors: (Interactive, InteractiveX, Smartass, SmartassV2, Savaged-zen, and Lag Free)?

I've used damn near every kernel available for CM7. And by far the BEST kernel for battery life is Savaged Zen. I'm on a stock battery and it just seems to last forever. Add to that the fact that the battery lasts all day without sacrificing performance at all. Every phone is different and you may or may not see the same results. This is just what has worked for my phone. Honestly, your best bet is to get flash happy with various kernels until you find one that gives you the performance and battery life that you're looking for. By the way, I use SVZ Manager with my kernel so that I can toggle SBC on and off as I please. It's a nice apk that gives you some flexibility.

I've tried Tiamat 4.0.8 and a Savaged Zen kernel (can't remember which version). They both gave me about 12 hours of battery life on an average day(for me). But an average day for me is going to school, so I'm not on my phone as much. I haven't gotten to really test the battery life because I haven't looked at it on the weekend when I'm not at school. But like Concordium said, every phone is different! Try them all!

at the moment i am using the latest svz kernel with the svz manager as well. i have been flashing many kernels and for a while i was happy when i used the godmode kernel my phone lasted me 1 day and 6 hours, however he is no longer updating his kernels =( i'm hoping to find another kernel such as that one that will give me around the same results ^_^

I liked Godmode. But it didn't seem to give me as good battery life as savaged zen has given me. Each phone is different though.

well im testing this one out at the moment and it has given me so far 17 hours and 20 mins, still at 31% battery, im just not sure if it'll do better than godmode did, at the moment im running it on the smartass kernel and i ran godmode on interactive so maybe that is the prob... however another issue is i've heard that svz is no longer updating as well... do u know if this is true? and one random thing that only a few people have told me is that they run on performance and overclock their phone and get the best battery from it, is that possible or a lie?
Edit: it lasted 20 hours and 53 mins, so since it didn't do as good as GodMode did then im gonna try the tiamat 4.1.0 now cause it has first place in the poll atm.

Its true that its not being updated anymore. It sucks but I plan to ride it out as long as the kernel functions properly with CM. Once it starts screwing up then I'll switch.
Those who say they get the best battery life by overclocking and putting their phone on performance are full of crap. Performance governor is basically the polar opposite of Powersave. Performance keeps your cpu constantly running at a high frequency. Logic states that overclocking to 1.13 ghz and perpetually running at that frequency requires more power than running at 245 mhz. The more power required the less time your battery will stay alive. Powersave gives you best battery life but gives you crap performance. Interactive, Smartass, and Ondemand give you a balance of performance and battery life. Performance gives you the best performance but crap battery life.
By the way, do you really need a phone that can stay off the charger for more than 21 hours? :-x

no i do not but! 3 days of the week im at school doing nothing for 8-10 hours so... i think if my phone can run longer than a day w/o charging then it mean i can play games on my phone while waiting and by the end of the day i'll still have battery. and does it make sense for someone to get better battery life on interactive than on smartass?

Well Smartass, as I've heard it described, is sort of like Interactive 2.0. It's basically the interactive governor but better. Unfortunately, I do not know enough of the exact specifics of the governors to tell you which SHOULD be getting better battery. I would just run each of those governors and see which one works better for you.
And I thought your phone already lasted 21 hours with a decent amount of usage. You need to test the governors/kernels in the exact situation you are going to be using the phone. Interactive, Ondemand, and Smartass would all manage the phone pretty much the same if you just leave it alone and let it sit till the battery drains. but they each manage the power allocation supplied to the cpu very differently during actual use. One ramps up the voltage quickly while one scales it up more gradually. So take your charger with you to school, in case you run into trouble, and use the phone as you believe you will be using it in the future. Then you'll have a more accurate idea of which setup works best for you.

just wondering what do you keep your cpu settings at: the governor, cpu min & max?
When I am plugged into my wall charger I keep it at 1113/245. I use Performance for benchmarking and testing since I don't need to worry about battery life and Smartass when doing everything else. For normal every day use I have it at 1036/245/Smartass, Interactive, or Ondemand. I don't really have a preference between the three governors since they all make my battery last more than long enough. So it usually comes down to whichever my clumsy finger happens to accidentally select first. If I happen to not go home and need more life then I'll drop to 729/245/Conservative or Powersave. I use conservative if I still need to be able to use the phone a bit and powersave if I want my phone to just sit there and look pretty till I get back home.

You're not bugging me man. This place exists so people can ask questions and get help.
I keep my min at 245 because I've read, in multiple places, that allowing it to go any lower is not something your cpu really appreciates. Just like there is such thing as too high with your clock speed there is also a too low. And everywhere I have seen 245 is the preferred low end. I am not 100% sure as to why but I would assume that it is because your cpu needs at least a certain amount of power to run the basic processes required to keep your phone functional. Similar to a computer. Lower the cpu too much and it just can't do what it needs to.

I don't remember there being a thread dedicated to this. I just remember it from posts I saw within different OC/UV threads. Do a Google search for it and see if that returns any results. Like I said, I doubt you'll find a full dedicated thread. But you may be able to find the individual posts where it's mentioned.

With Tiamat 4.1 and juicedefender I get the best battery performance and v6 supercharger I have a smooth screen with no problems or lag at all.

A lot of people say AOSP ROMs are good on battery life cuz the sense is gone.
Try out Xplod RLS (one of my favs) test it out see how it goes for you. It's an AOSP btw.
For sense I recommend Tommytomatoes Classic v0.0.0.4 its awesome!
How long does your battery last? Are you running mobile data all day? GPS?
I can get around 20-24 hours put of my battery with real heavy usage. Around 2 days with normal use.
I keep my 3g and everything off until i need it.

I have always had the best success with AOSP and custom kernel.
Currently running ICSmod7 with latest tiamets. With 4g it drops fast but without I get through a full day no worries medium use. Text, fb, music during workout ect...

Getting good battery life with MikG 2.61.
mikg rom to me is best for battery life .and very stable rom and clean so try and let us know .im running miui and battery life is pretty good but not as good as my mikg rom

I've been experimenting with ROMs and kernels for the last 18 months, always looking for best battery life with regular to heavy use. A good custom kernel will sometimes give you an extra 10-15 %. Using setCPU or another app like systemtuner (my pref) to turn CPU down while screen off can also give you 5-10%. Far and away the best thing for my battery is to use an alternative launcher (ADW for me) and then use Titanium backup pro or systemtuner to freeze sense. you just find the two elements in the process list that start with "HTC sense" and freeze them. Night and day. FYI I run synergy and have always come back to Myn's ROMs cause they are good for battery from the start, but they also take well to pretty much any custom kernel, which isn't true for all ROMs. I like everything to work so I always ditch AOSP ROMs a few days after trying them.

Underclocking your CPU typically causes higher battery drain... unless you're overclocking. As long as nothing is really hammering the CPU in the background (which is the problem, not the CPU speed!), then it's better to let the CPU enter higher power states in order to finish the work quicker and return to low power sleep state. Intel calls this HUGI (Hurry Up and Get Idle). Overclocking can have bad effects with HUGI due to the higher voltage required to run at those frequencies. Lol'd at your AOSP comment though. I suppose some people are okay with subpar android, aka sense .
My Evo can last a week on a single charge. CM7.1, 1850 mAh aftermarket battery (slim, stock battery cover), Tiamat 4.1.0 kernel, aggressive undervolting and monitoring of wakelocks combined with 90% wifi usage (3g is the #1 source of battery drain!).

Tommytomatoes The Classic is a solid sense rom with good battery life its fast as hell, has lots of mods and themes and is pretty sick I've been stuck on it for over a month now I've flashed other roms but always come back to the classic after a few hours

Underclocking is when you set the speed of the processor to a lower setting than the stock clocks where as undervolting is lowering the voltage needed to run it at a certain speed be it stock underclocked or overclocked. Simplest way I understand it.

Ya this is one of the main reasons behind bad batt.. Sprint and other carriers allow a company to monitor and chart everything we do and it mirrors off txts and data sent and is designed to pick up on.key words... Basically an Invasive tracking monitor. It's a huge in noticed drain... And its been shown to be removed from system/app in many custom roms. But it never does cause its so strattled throughout the OS.

I have been using evodeck v1.3 with the lee kernel and the rom just sips on my battery and gives me outstanding battery life with amazing speeds

Battery life based on kernels and ROM combinations

Been playing with many combinations of ROM and kernel yet seems no matter what I try battery life is poor. Right now running coreDroid 1.3.3 with latest Franco kernel seems so so with slight under voltage settings within setcpu. So what is everyone else opinions? Thanks for feedback!

My best combination has come from AOKP Milestone 3 and Faux's 12u kernel. Usually get 16-20 hours with light/mod usage during the day and heavy usage in the evenings.

Best battery life I've seen yet is the stock 4.0.4 release w/ the kernel that comes with it. I get 4-7 hours with mod-heavy usage and 14-16 hours of light-mod usage.
I get 2-3 hours using Franco's kernel. Really not great. I should look around for a better kernel to suit my usage.

Jeez you use your phone a lot. I'm on kang 1/31 with faux's kernel. I use my phone for the commute to work and turn off lte when I get there. Mostly music and reading. I have it underclocked at 1060mhz and running under performance governor, it helps me check my phone and send out texts at work faster. Then at night I flip on lte again and a lot of the times go out. I don't think 15 hrs is too bad.

best battery life i had was 36 hours with moderate usage. no lie.
aokp b17 + francos 13.1, smooth and amaziiiiiing battery life. if i wasn't a flash junkie, i would be sitting on that right now.
I'm a little confused by your post. Are you developing a kernel or a rom? Either way looking forward to the release.

I mean screen on time!
I got 42 hours without charging the phone yesterday, with 2 hours 40 minutes screen on time. I was using it very sparingly over the period though.
If we you want this thread to be useful we need to make sure all posts at least state screen ON time. Even then there are so many other factors:
Screen On Time
Total Up Time
GSM/LTE
ROM
Kernel
Kernel Freq
Kernel Governor
Screen Brightness (Avg)
WIFI state
BT State
etc
Okay so I'll start...
Screen On Time - 3-4hrs
Total Up Time - 14 to 25hrs
GSM/LTE - GSM
ROM - AOKP 22
Kernel - Franco 16.2
Kernel Freq - 700/1000
Kernel Governor - Turtle
Screen Brightness (Avg) - <40%
WIFI state - On
BT State - Off
Clarify Battery Life Info
I am not developing anything. I am just wondering what people that flash different kernels and roms have experienced and settled on as far as best battery life. In my sig there is the one I currently use. I actually have been trying franco kernel lately and that seems to be slightly better. Its tough to tell since I try to plug in the phone as often as possible either to outlet or my laptop. Does that help clarify what I am curious about??

Why do I get horrible battery life with ROMS and Kernels?

I've used cm9 and aokp the past month and tried the stock Kernels that come with it and Franco's. One thing is for certain. No matter combination I get horrible battery life. If I run stock android with my extended battery including various Widgets I get 24 hours battery life pretty easily. Moderate usage and some heavy usage. With cm9 I'm getting maybe 15-16 hrs with aokp maybe 8-9 hers and I'm using Franco's kernel right now. I don't understand this. People talk about how much better the battery life is with various ROMS than stock but I'm not getting it. I'm getting like half the battery life I was before. Any ideas?

I can relate to you. Was in CM9 and Franko's kernel and as you said, horrible battery life. I went back to stock but this time I did not install apps thar would require services running (well I have to run WhatsApp so that's the only one running besides default abdroid services).
I am seeing better battery life this way.
The next step would be to install CM9 and restore all my apps to see if I can replicate the same battery life.

you need to find out what apps are keeping your phone from sleeping dude its not the ROM or Kernel if you want to find out you can use better battery stats or just read the permissions on your apps otherwise its probably cause your on your phone too much with the screen on first show use a usage screen shot then how many apps you have we can narrow it down

I'm getting about 1.5 hrs screen time. With stock in was getting 2-3hrs. As far as apps keeping my phone from sleeping. I'm running the same apps I run on stock android when I was getting a full day on average so not sure how they would run different because I'm on a ROM.

But now... Franco m4 + aokp b37
And 3 to 3.5 hours screen

I used that better battery stats app and apparently there was audio something (sorry can't remember the exact words) causing partial wakelocks, read some google search results and disabled the lock screen sound in aokp and it went away, go figure?
I swear my battery life is better with the kernel that comes with AOKP rather than franco, which was a bummer since I'd just bought the franco updater app, perhaps just my imagination or maybe something just needs to be tweaked
Well, this has pretty much nothing to do with the ROMs/kernels, you flash to the device. If you use the device for heavy gaming, you use loads of apps etc. the battery life will obviously be bad, because the CPU needs the according CPU clock speed...
Underclock the CPU, or better: Get AnTuTu CPU Master pro, and set the profiles, underclock screen off, to 700 MHz, and every other proile, where you do not neccessarily need the device to that speed, not below, otherwise it will just crash... That way you have the best battery life, for your usage, so basically, every time you switch the device's screen off, it will save a hell of a load of battery
Under clocking doesn't do much for battery life contrary to popular belief. It just increases the time it takes to process a task. It might take 1s at 1.2ghz vs 1.8s at 800ghz to complete a given task for example. So yes the cpu will run at lower speed and voltage but it still also take longer to return to idle.

Well, I don't really mean to break this, because it is right, but not completely...
Underclocking & undervolting, when the device is not in use (Screen off) saves loads of battery...
And because it's a dual-core, it takes mostly just as long to open an app at 700 MHz, as when you're doing it at stock clock speed, or voltage or higher.. So, in that case...

Not sure how this wouldn't have to do with the different ROMS and kernels since I stated what battery life I was getting with stock vs using a custom kernel and ROMS. I'm giving a comparison of my battery on each with the same usasge and they are different.

Okay so today I tried MIUI. The battery life blows stock android, aokp and cm9 away. I had over 3hrs of screen time today. Night and day compared to cm9 and aokp. I really don't get this.
