Is it still possible to tether using are Dinc. without having to pay the extra service fee?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
you crazy?
yes
I've been using it as my main internet now for nearly 2 weeks since my Cable went out.
Suggested app to use:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
This is the most stable version:
wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk
As always you must be rooted for this to work. Without rooting, tethering will cost you 30$ / month
more backstory:
Google removed that tethering app from the market, likely because of pressure from Wireless Providers. However there are others (barnacle, some flower one that is nearly identical to android tether app). I still prefer the one listed above to those, barnacle never worked well for me and the flower UI was annoying
Cheers.
You can also still tether for free even without root using the stock app. if you change a setting in EPST.
##778, edit, (code is 000000), MIP default profile, change dun networking from ##########@dun.vzw3g.com to ##########@vzw3g.com. Something like that. That's just from memory. Also still works in the leaked GB ROM. I've done it for some friends that don't want to root, but wanted tethering for free for the occasional use. I use tethering, but don't abuse it or use it very often.
I wonder who pushed through banning some of the wifi tether apps in the market.. The carriers with the "censored" market are Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile (Sprint noticeably absent). I can understand why the carriers wouldn't want people having free access to a paid service, but I don't know about Google satiating them and pulling the apps from the market..
But yes, tethering for free is very possible. I've used the built in tethering of CM7, barnacle, and wifi tether, and I'd say the wifi tether app linked to in the first reply works the best. Seemed like the built in tether would crap out after a while, where with wifi tether, it just keeps working and also shows DL/UL speeds and totals.

For the past few weeks, if I tried to update "that tethering app" when I got the update-available notice, Market would respond with the "Not Found" message.
Because, well, like you said...
But this morning it updated without a hitch.
Still doesn't show up in a market search, but updates OK now.
I just got Jedi Mind Trick x2 flashed onto my tmobile t989 (so far, so good) and I'm trying to figure everything out. I was going through the apps to try and delete the tethering provisions so that I could get free wifi tethering for my phone, but it wasn't in the list. Does that mean that it already has the free wifi tethering?
I wondered this before. The original stock rom (when you first got your t989) only has the tether provisioning app for some reason. You could try apps from play store that gives free wifi tethering. If anyone knows how to get free wifi tethering on cm9 / cm10 please we would love to know.

Yes, its been debloated and you can just use the tethering.
Anyone know which program, since the JB 4.1.1 updated (AT&T SGH-I747) will allow tethering preferably both wifi and usb. I tried this one and can't get it to work with the Samsung S3 profile selected or the Galaxy Nexus GSM profile selected.

Don't think you can unless u root your phone. At&t doesn't allow it.

I'm rooted. That app I referenced specifically says you need a rooted phone. I just don't see the SSID come up on my notebook. I want something that can also tether USB too, as then I don't have to worry about locking down security on the Wifi or draining the phone battery.
What are the options if you root it?

Been searching for an hour now. Tried two other apps. Neither worked. (Neither said root was necessary). Not willing to pay for Foxfi just to see it not work. Elixir 2 people have used but I think this is all pre Jelly Bean, at least for the GSM (AT&T) version of this phone.
Seems maybe we have to wait. All the apps, videos, posts out there seem to be for ICS. Guess this is the downfall when you update within 24 hours of the update being released. Need to let the developers catch up.
I can confirm pdanet works....havent tried foxfi but im sure it does as well considering how similar they work...
Galaxy S III I747
Prior to update I was using FoxFi and it looks like it still works with Jelly Bean but I'm unable to get the Proxy Add-On to work since Jelly Bean.
Do you think I'll get caught tethering if I run FoxFi without the Add-On or does the Add-On only provide a false sense of security and is really not making a difference?
If it makes a difference, I'm on one of the old 2GB plans, not the new shared plans, but not unlimited either. Also, I'm stock, not rooted.
Finally, if you don't think this works, any suggestions that would work in this situation?
Thanks!

I was on the old 5GB plan (the one that allowed tethering) and switched to the new shared plan (since I don't do that much data but do call a lot and wanted the unlimited calling (saves me over a hundred bucks a month)) and on these plans they do allow tethering. From what I understand, you will need to have a rooted phone if you want to tether under any other (older) plan..

I guess we should be specific that we are looking for apps that not only work on JB 4.1.1 but also don't require a tethering or shared data plan. So people say an apps works but fail to point out it's because their carrier is okaying the app since they have a qualifying plan. So pdanet works on JB 4.1.1 SGH-I747 without an AT&T tethering or shared data plan?

No...you should have said "I have no clue what im doing so can you please explain every single detail to me?". WTF does a tethering plan have to do with you being able to tether or not if youre rooted? You need to disable to tethering provision via TB!

Not everyone on here has been on an Android phone and screwing with it all their lives. For example, what the heck is "TB" ? Don't assume everyone has as much experience as you, just because they are a participant on XDA. And I should also add on that requirement, NO CUSTOM ROM.
So an appropriate answer might be the following:
If you are on JB 4.1.1 and want to tether without a tethering plan from your carrier, and you are on the STOCK ROM. You need to do this, this, this and this. Or just post a frickin link to someone who DID take the time to explain it for the rest of us. Does your solution require rooting, or doesn't it. STATE IT. So future people when they search the forums, they don't find a bunch of misleading, dead-end solutions and/or bickering.
I just came from iPhone and I was a jailbreaker. I'm loving the S3 and Jelly Bean. But on the iPhone, I'd jailbreak (equivalent of rooting on Android), install MyWiFi, and DONE and DONE. It seems this was how it was on ICS with this phone. Now on JB, not so simple. There's dozens of posts on several threads on several forums around the Internet of people no longer getting their tethering app to work since JB upgrade. These are both rooted and non-rooted, but they are all STOCK JB ROMs.
So please, tell us the trick to get a stock JB 4.1.1 ROM SGH-I747 AT&T to tether without the plan. We are all ears!

Not sure as I've been to busy with my real life outside of XDA to spend hours reading and reading posts.
Bottom line, if there was an app you can just download and install for ICS before that worked, isn't it just a matter of time until someone publishes an app on Google Play (may require rooting, big deal) that does the same without a bunch of workarounds and crap.
Look one post above yours
Install that zip file via CWM(clockworkmodrecovery)....then download TITANIUM BACKUP (TB...you need the pro version...you can download lucky patcher for that) and go in and freeze the tethering provision app. This will allow you to tether without your carrier knowing...kindof...
P.S. ICS was the same protocol. You have to freeze the tethering provision...
Galaxy S III I747
Thank you. I've got Titanium Backup installed now. So should I just use the built-in AT&T tethering app now or is it 'safer' to use something else?
Found it.
Still no love. CW Recovery and Team Epic Root Installed. TB Pro installed. Tethering Provisioning Uninstalled.
Tried to Tethering Apps on Google Play, neither work. "Free USB Tethering App" and "Wifi Tethering for Root" (tried Auto and Samsung S3 profiles). No Dice. Thought there was an native AT&T app but may have uninstalled it with TB when cleaning out bloatware.
SGH-I747 AT&T
Okay, duh, I found the Tether toggle in Advanced Settings. I also found a couple tether apps that don't require root that actually came up on the network, but I get 'Limited' connectivity indication in Windows with no Internet access.
Now get this, whenever I go into Settings > Advanced > Tether if I toggle it on or off or toggle USB sharing on, I get the message "Settings application has stopped working" Some of the tethering apps also "stop working" when I try to run them even though I see the blue tether notification icon in the status bar and I can see the SSID on the network and connect, but it is as if the phones ability to bridge the wifi hotspot it is providing to the 4G Internet connection is broke.
****. Do I need to load Kies and to a stock firmware restore, or is that not even possible not that I have CW recovery installed. I really really didn't want to get into this Android tweaking Hell and now I'm there. Another wasted frickin weekend! Maybe I'll just go back to iPhone. Hopefully the iOS 6 jailbreak is out now (untethered).
Kind of ticked up about being lead down the road that indicated just freezing the tethering provisioning was the solution to all my woes. Maybe it worked for some (are you on JB 4.1.1 with AT&T SGH-I747???) but not me. After a couple more hours of searching and searching, including all sorts of YouTube videos showing using FoxFi, Wifi Tether for Root, etc, and then a lot of recent comments about it nor working. Anyways.....
Soultion is a newer hacked version of Wifi Tether for Rooted user that is not on the Play Store and the apk has to be downloaded directly. Current version is here:

YouTube Video on it here:

What a pain in the ass it took to finally find this. Guess that's the price you pay when you are brand new to Android and an OS update comes out two weeks after you got your phone and you install it the day it comes out. Sigh.
Ugh. Got too excited too quick. You can't toggle Wifi back on after shutting down tethering without restarting phone! Guess it's going to be a few more days until some good developers come out with a simple one-app solution without issues. It was WAY easier to get free tethering on the jailbroken iPhone that this. I'm shocked this is so hard right now on Android JB 4.1.1. But I have to remember the OS update just came out.
Hello, One of the main reasons for me buying a galaxy s2 and switching to T-Mobile unlimited from virgin mobile was to use wifi hotspot in my car for streaming radio and the like. well when i got it i found out that not only did it not work, but i cant even pay extra to have it as it's not supported by my 70 dollar a month plan. I haven't rooted my phone or installed any other roms on it, it's just stock.
do any of you know which rom would support mobile hotspot so i can use it if any? id hate to go back to virgin mobile after spending all this money to have a fast network.
-thanks

I'm pretty sure almost all of them support free tethering. From my experience, any CM ROM will have free tethering. I have always been a die hard fan of CM and never really used any other ROM except the super sexy MIUI. Which I am using the JB version atm. The only issue with this ROM is the lack of WiFi calling but I will gladly trade WiFi calling for the sexiness that is MIUI! Pretty stable so far! No issues.
You should try CM9. Its an ICS ROM and is better than CM10 IMHO. Only because CM9 allows you to tweak it a bit more. Cyanogenmod is the most stable ROM out IMHO. Def a wise choice that you will not regret.
The thing about tethering is it uses your data plan. So if you have anything less than unlimited.... your most likely going to run into problems. That throttling crap is a pain in the butt! I had a 2GB plan and used it up in a few days due to YouTube and Pandora and it would take 10 minutes just to load Facebook. I also use T-Mobile but I paid the extra $10 a month for unlimited.

Just as codecaine21 mentioned, most of the custom ROMs out there have tethering capabilities. If you will be tethering via a laptop, be sure to see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677490 . You may need to change the UA string in your laptop's web browser to avoid being redirected to a t-mobile mobile web plan page. If you are tethering using a mobile device, you shouldn't have any issues. Hope this helps.

If he is running CM or MIUI, he would not need to change his browsers UA string.
When has the UA string ever been an issue on a custom/aftermarket ROM?

free wifi tethering t-mobile sgh-t989 4.0.4 works
okay let me just start off by saying I did not figure this out by myself. someone put me on to this method about a year ago here on xda I'm sorry i can't remember the user name but if you know who you are thankyou. first of all you must be rooted for this method next download titanium backup open up titanium backup grant superuser permission if this is your first time using the application next click on the middle button back up/restore scroll almost all the way to the bottom find tethering provisions click on tethering provision if you have Titanium Backup Pro you will be able to backup this file and or freeze the file or completely uninstall the file next find wifi sharing manager also under backup/ restore once both of these files are either frozen or uninstalled reboot your phone and enjoy free wifi tethering

Ok. For those that ARE NOT running 4.1/4.2, The tethering provision has already been removed. The newest CM builds have a very difficult time using the Tether for Root users. Some people would like to say that all it takes is to change the device profile to Galaxy S2, but that doesn't work. And the OP said he is running stock, no root. Not many apps, if any, will work with his device on 4.0.4. Might have to downgrade to GB. That was the last time WIFI Tether for Root users worked for me.

i've been using infamous resurrection 2.0 and hot spot works just fine. this ROM is pretty much like the stock one with few modifications. Other folks talk about other ROMs; yes they do work well; but if you prefer something closer to stock like me, then infamous would be something to consider.

Thanks a lot for all of your info. i manged to root my phone with no problems and flashed my phone to aokp_hercules_jb-mr1_build-5.
This is my first time flashing a new rom on a phone and this one seems pretty stable. I have been using it for a couple weeks now and there hasn't been any problems yet. If i didn't know i would think this build shipped with the phone. google now works great, USB tether works, and mobile hotspot works with some trial and error. however, when my ipod and ipad both connect to mobile hotspot, they do nothing. I was trying to stream pandora and tunein from from the ipod through my car using hotspot but i guess it's just a problem with iOS devices as other phones and laptops connect fine.
This will work for now until either the real JB comes out or I buy a nexus or new galaxy device. thanks.
Picked up the Note yesterday, retiring and storing my s4 for emergency use with had Hyperdrive and Tether. Is there a way to bypass the subscription check it runs when you start the tether up? I have unlimited data and use it mostly for tethering since my university's WiFi is awful. I could have sworn there was something you had to set to true and it would bypass the check on other phones. What really drags is we don't have root yet so it makes this quite difficult. Any help is welcome!
Try Foxfi. Works without root. Do a search...topic has been discussed at length.
Thought about using that app, but the free version only gives you so much bandwidth or something like that. I like the idea of just using the stock app. Is this my only option until root and other Roms follow?
I was swapping my SIM back and forth between my rooted note 2 so that I could hotspot, but then I found out foxfi works on the unrooted note 4. I haven't bought the paid version yet, but probably will just for convenience.
Yes...been using paid version for a month, works flawlessly.
Thanks guys!
