I Did one nandroid backup with twrp recovery, I want to make a 2nd after i restore all my market apps one by one because for some reason app market doesnt auto restore or let you check mark all your owned/paid/downloaded apps... you apparently have to download each one by one .Anyway I want to back up all the the correct partitions besides the ones that are auto checked by default, like does efs need to be backed up or any others besides system data and boot

I backup every partition except cache. The efs partition is ALL important. You should always back that up.
Also you should get the Titanium Backup App from the Play Store. You can use it to backup and restore your apps and data before and after a flash. You won't have to download and install your apps one by one anymore. I suggest you get the paid version. It is well worth the money.

Whenever I install a new rom, can restoring the saved data from apps bring along bugs and problems from the previous rom? The TB site says that is not the case, but would like to hear the opinion of other people. I almost always restore the data, is it better to restore just the apps once in awhile?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
It depends on the rom. Usually it says on the rom info if it is ok to restore. If it dosent say then usually its ok to restore data. Also if your just upgrading the rom to a newer version restoring data usually doesnt wreck the rom. But you should do a full wipe before flashing a new rom
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I have never seen a rom say anything about titanium backup. I see them talk about maybe a nand data restore, but I'm pretty sure that is different than a titanium backup app+data restore. A nand data backup/restore just backs up and restores the entire data partition. A tb backup only backs up the data that is attached to each installed app.
Just to make sure I'm clear to everyone I'm talking only about APP data. I know you can backup and restore system data with tb but I'm not interested in messing with that. It takes 5 min to configure system settings.

Restoring App data can cause issues, and if you want to be safe just do a nandroid backup before restoring all of the apps+data just to be sure. You should have no problems though.
The big thing to avoid is restoring system data. This restores things like settings etc. and is very dangerous unless you're re-flashing the same exact type of ROM as your Titanium Backup (i.e. fresh install of CM7 after being on CM7 prior).
Titanium Backup never wreked my instalation of new roms.
So I was wondering if I could just go through a nAndroid and delete all the system data, and only leave the apps folder --- I know its more complicated than that --- turn it into a zip and install the zip in recovery, and use this to restore apps, rather than having to reboot, install titanium, etc... just have a standard restore app file created from a nAndroid that automatically does all the my user apps.
I'm sure playing with this is tempting fate with the hassles of having to re-wipe and re-rom or whatever...
the goal is to have a flashable zip ready to go so I can install test roms, and restore my user apps more quickly between each test...

You can selectively restore apps from a nandroid backup using titanium backup. But it sounds like you want a recovery flashable zip. I don't know how to do that.

When you go to Backup and Restore. Go to advanced restore and restore just the data. This will give you all your apps and such.

I think making a flashable zip of selected apps can also be done using titanium BU. It has wwaaaayyyyy more features than I could/would ever use. I've had the pro version a few years, and dont know how to use half its features. Anyhow, you might look there.
Also, I know if you have a partitioned SD card and using apps2sd, when you do a nand backup, you can backup and restore sd-ext, keeping all apps in tact. Not sure what the equivalent would be without removable storage.

This will often cause boot loops when going between incompatible ROMs.
But yeah, a TB restore from nandroid is a reasonable solution.

cool! thanks for the info!
So it is possible, what I am suggesting, or by using clockworkmod or titanium to selectively restore data only from a nAndroid, but can create problems.
Is it possible to delete all non-user-app data from the nAndroid data backup? I mean restoring system-app data could be problematic, but restoring user-app data shouldn't be problematic, right?
I don't know about deleting system app data from the nandroid backup.
I do know that when restoring with TB from a nandroid, you can choose to select missing apps only, which means it won't attempt to restore data to any apps you already have. And then if there are any individual apps you missed when doing that, you can go in again and restore just those.
So I haven't found the answer to this yet....
So i had to fully flash and unroot to take it my Gnex back to Verizon and I made a Nandroid backup but now after all is said and done I rerooted and installed a ROM and downloaded Titanium Backup and nothing was there. The folder was gone. I didn't realize it would wipe that folder away. I thought it would be like a factory reset (data/cache/dalvik) like I always do before flashing a new ROM. I don't have a backup of that Titanium backup folder, but is there a chance if I restore from a Nandroid backup up that it'll bring the folder back.
Not quite sure how the restore works in that sense. Any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Nope.
A nandroid will restore your apps and such though...
So restore the nandroid (you have a copy on your PC, if I'm understanding correctly?) and create a Titanium Backup then.
Yes I do have a Nandroid backup copy on my PC. Basically I wanted my apps back but wasn't going to do the Nandroid restore if it wasn't going to bring back my apps and data. Now I know to keep a copy of the Titanium back up folder as well as a copy of the Nandroid on my computer so I don't run into this again.
Hopefully I won't have to go back to Verizon soon and have to even worry about it again.
Thanks for your help!

There's also the option of using the app appextractor. It extracts from your nandroid so you don't have to actually restore the whole thing. I use titanium backup myself, so I've never tried using app extractor to restore apps, but it has the option and it works great for restoring SMS.

People sometimes complain of TB force closing during restore and such; which I've never had.
But I did get this when trying to restore applications from a nandroid with Titanium the couple of times I tried.
Granted, this was probably 10 updates ago, not sure if anything has changed.
Titanium backup will extract apps from your nandroid too as previously mentioned. Not sure of the steps as I don't have my phone with me at the moment but I have done it many times. The online help for TB has detailed instructions. Basically you choose extract from nandroid then point it to the nandroid and tick the apps you want restored. presto it restores them, However if you don't have the paid version you will have to do them one at a time. In the future you can set a schedule for TB to send your backup folder to Dropbox or google drive also. That way you can restore from there in case something catastrophic happens.
I haven't had to use it yet so can't say how good it is but the app Nandroid Browser is supposed to allow you to browse thru the backups in memory and you can pick what you want restored.

Just use Titanium. That's why it has a restore from nandroid option.
Don't like titanium. Never works for me...and yes...i do know how to read the directions but i would still get force close issues on some apps.
Supposedly can extract and restore any file from it. Single apk files...whatever...and move to sd, dropbox...

I didn't realize titanium had an extract from nandroid feature. But I never have problems with titanium force closing either, months ago it would hang occasionally during batch restores but that has been fixed.

I was talking about the app nandroid browser that extracts single files. And i always got fc from titanium. I use app2zip and flash all my apps back in while in recovery at same time as Rom

App2zip doesn't restore app data. It's nothing you can't do with a root file explorer. You could easily just copy your apps and stick em in the ROM or Gapps zips too if you didn't care about the data.

No it doesn't restore data but as long as you don't clear your storage is still there and i don't have any apps that need data restored. I don't play games or anything like that. I did see they have an old final fantasy in play store tho..All my bookmarks are in sync with desktop so those always come back. While not for people who need data restored it works for me since Google hasn't been restoring any of my apps for quite some time. App2zip is so much faster than hunting and installing one by one

Just curious, couldn't you backup data using titanium and backup apk using that zip method? So you can backup the apk and then flash it, then after restore the data with titanium? Just a thought
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel, overclocked to 1.4GHz
I don't really have any data worth saving. My memory is full of roms, pics, and recovery files. That's about it.

I flashed the Eclipse 2.1 ToroPlus ROM last night coming from a stock AOSP 4.2....did the usual Titanium Backup before the flash.
Did the factory reset 3 times as well as format system 3 times like I do EVERY time I change ROMs (using latest TWRP)...
However once I booted this ROM everything (folders) was gone...like when you revert to factory with ODIN...just the basic files were in my root...
I never had this happen before...
the problem with this is I was using "Safe Notes" to keep ALOT of Admin info/passwords for numerous websites I do the upkeep on, as well as some bank info, money owed to me by others, etc....
Now, I DO have a bunch of CWM nandroids from previous backups...is there any way to go into one of these nandroids and extract the files for "Safe Notes" from a Titanium Backup "backup zip" to slip into the directory for the app?
I've done it before with a SafeNotes backup I made but that's long gone now...
I have backups of all the WidgetLocker, UCCW, music, etc. but I NEED NEED NEED to get the Safe Notes info back...
Like I said I've never had this happen before except for when I intentionally wipe everything via ODIN when returning to factory condition...I wasn't expecting it...
Also, what could cause this problem??
Was it because I came from 4.2 back to 4.1.2??
When I booted up after installing the new ROM I went to re-install my apps through Titanium Backup but they weren't there...perhaps that had something to do with the gapps package?
I thought that might be the case so I installed the 4.2 gapps package and still nothing in TB....
perhaps install CWM and restore one of the latest nandroids to recover the Safe Notes file/info?
if I could extract it from a ZIP from inside one of the TB/nandroid backups that would be sweet...but if restoring a nandroid is the ONLY option I guess I'll have to do that...
I *REALLY* need the info on that Safe Notes file...hope someone can help...
This is a great question, I lost my notes somehow with TWRP trying to upgrade to BAKED blackbean 7 on my Galaxy S3. Have you found a solution yet?
Titanium backup can restore apps and data from backups. Hit menu (3 dots) go to extract from nandroid backup. Hopefully it will have it. Some apps store information in other places and when that is the case it's lost. Should do the trick though

If you have a nandroid backup and root you should be able to use TiBu or Nandroid Manager to restore your app data.

I have both, but when I try to restore data for the app, SafeNotes then has what appears to be an empty data. I'm not sure if the database was stored somewhere else. I made a nandroid but lost my SafeNotes data after ODIN. I have tried to look around (mostly in the data folder) for a file I can use with SafeNotes' restore database option, but nothing seems to work :/.
I heard that titanium backup should not be used when changing to a new ROM.
Is it true? If so, why?
Another question, if I don't use titanium backup to backup everything but just a few user data(like the save of games), and I don't backup the app, just simply the user data, is it okay then?
It doesn't matter if you are changing roms or whatever it just backs up apk files and data folder so it will work on every rom without any problems.
It's better to take the 'app' from playstore after flashing a new Rom..sometimes titanium can get stuck at 'Restoring app data'..happened with me with twice..
Where did you read it shouldnt be used?
I regularly backup all user and system data.
When you go to a new ROM though, its quite fine to restore ALL user apps+data
But when it comes to system apps, I always go through them individually and restore what necessary - some system apps/data may conflict with the new ROM system apps/data.
This is my experience...could be bull**** lol
Alright, thx all of you

The best way is restore apps without data, reboot then restore data. I've been doing it that way since my x10 running donut...
If changing to another rom only restore user data/apps. Don't restore system apps data as it may cause probs.
I use titanium backup on my arc and n7 tablet have the same apps etc and always send titanium data between the 2 devices with out any issues.
