[Q] 1st Time Flashing ROMs - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey guys. This is my 2nd android but I never bothered rooting my 1st (MT4G).
My note 2 is rooted already and I am thinking of trying out some ROMs.
I have ZERO knowledge on this and I got some questions and I will really appreciate some brief explanation.
I've seen a prefix or tag saying [Official] or [Unofficial] on ROM thread titles when browsing development forum sections. What are the differences between the two? What are the pros and cons on using them?
What is the difference between the Original Android Development and the one without "Original"? Can I get or download ROMs from either of them?
When I look at this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2102380, there are links for Factory Image, Odexed, Deodexed, Kernel and Modem. What are these? Do I need all these in flashing ROMs?
I know there might be some existing thread as well explaining the above. A link of that will do and I'll just ask again if there is something I dont understand. I tried looking up but some I found doesn't explain most of the above.
But in case some of you got some time to explain, that will be the best TIA!

The easiest way for me was to ODIN flash a stock ROM with root injected and then install goomanager and use that to flash twrp. From there you can flash through recovery.

Hi thanks for the reply. I was really hoping to understand those questions I listed above. If someone can point me to some link or if someone is free to give some insight.
I've seen some steps in Youtube and it really look simple but I was hoping to get some ideas about my OP.
My question #3 is really the most confusing to me. Thanks again in advance.

#1 and #2 are addressed in the stickies. Regarding number #3, I only have a loose understanding of what it is and why a ROM is deodexed and wouldn't want to confuse you with bad information. I don't want to be an ass or sound smug but if you don't know what factory images, kernels, and modems are and can't take the time to read and learn for yourself, you shouldn't be flashing.

Read. Alot.
If you don't, expect problems.

Hey guys. No worries. I appreciate the honesty. I was just overwhelmed by the volume of information so I acted a bit lazy searching but I found some brief explanations about some of my questions just after I posted my last reply.
I honestly felt bad asking when there are so much info on the net when I try
Just another question. I read that most ROMs usually requires wiping data before flashing and doesn't recommend restoring backups from lets say Titanium BU after flashing. This means I have to re-download all my play store apps and re-install. Is there really no way of restoring backed up apps after flashing atm?
Thanks again for the patience.

You can use titanium backup. Some devs just suggest not restoring your app data, but the apps are okay. Now I personally do restore all my app data with titanium and never have a problem. As a reminder this is user apps don't do system apps.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app

I go one step further with TiBu. I'll restore specific system things like, Android ID (my employer's exchange server is very picky), dialer storage and wireless access points if I am in the same version of Android. I *hate* losing my mms messages and wifi setups.
If things are goofy after then I restore a nandroid I pulled immediately prior to the system apps restore.
Rarely do I have a problem.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

When I first started modding, I had so much trouble when I restored from TB, that I don't even back up my apps/data anymore. All my content is in the cloud anyway. When I do flash a different ROM now, I just reinstall from the market. It doesn't take that long. But I have been on CM nightlies for a while, so I don't have to wipe or reset or worry about backups.
I do keep a nandroid backed up on Dropbox, however, and I keep it current (backed up every day), so that if I do have to restore the whole image, I can get my latest settings back. Actually, now that I think about it, whenever I change my settings/theme/mod/tweak whatever, I make a nandroid and back it up to the cloud. So it's not really daily, but depends on when and how much I mod. Hope this helps.

Changing roms

I tried searching for this, but the app seems to have some limitations. Please forgive if this is a repost. I have been on my 3rd rom for 2 weeks now but want to check out another new release. Long story short, I don't want to lose anything installed or subsequent app data. How can I back up and restore all of the non-rom data and have all of the new goodies of the new rom laid on top of the great app/personal data/settings?
Is this a dumb question?

Thanks both for feedback. So I can back up on titanium to sd then wipe all the cache etc, flash new rom, restore?

This is a fool proof list:
1. Titanium Backup all apps and data
2. Boot into clockworkmod and wipe data 3x
3. Flash new rom
4. Download titanium backup from market and install backups.
Thank you good sir.

Just out of curiosity, as long as you wipe the three things in recovery, will restoring old data on top of a new ROM from TitaniumBackup ever cause problems?
I've heard some people recommend not doing that, but never really gave any explanation.
Installing from titanium backup won't cause problems as long as you don't mess with system apps.

Help!!!!!! Stock Root, Now No Status Bar, Also Cant.....

Hey XDA friends...seriously over my head noob here, I performed the Odin One Click stock root posted on You Tube by QbKing last week. Maybe two days ago, I lost my status/notification bar as well as the ability to answer phone calls. i can make them tho. Also, my home screen icons are dissappering randomly (possibly only at reboot, I'll have to check on that). This all occurred it seems, when Titanium B/U prompted me to save certain apps to SD. Please help me and i will promise not to ever again take you alls training and long hours learning your craft lighty again! Thx.
Did you keep your data? If so the best way is a totally clean install. Give it another shot.
Thanks
I did in fact do a "save data root", and I'm embarrassed to say, how might I go about performing a clean install, and would I have root privileges after, and finally, any tips or advice on how one might avoid this type of thing in the future? Thank you for taking some of your time to guide the blind and aimless

re download the one click, making sure it is ff18 or el29 depending on whether you want gb or ics, then reflash it in odin using the same video as a guide. Weird you lost that status bar though, usually it won't boot if you had a bad download. I suspect with titanium backup you restored a gingerbread launcher on an ics rom or vice versa. Avoid restoring apps from titanium unless you know what you are doing would be my advice.

Thx for that info cuz I was doing just that.... attempting to restore certain back ups, one being the stock launcher. So are you suggesting a complete wipe and then download and reflash the one click? Honestly, the reason I orginally decided on the root option is sorta of dumb I suppose. I was sure that my ex had installed spyware on my phone and saw root as the only viable option for discovery, I actually like the stock rom and initially really liked the stock w/root. Obiviously I have a lot to learn...and express my genuine appreciation for knowlegdeable people such as yourself for helping me pull my head out my ass inch by inch.:

Here you go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
Then Install this one
2) Download the FF18 full restore One-Click self-extractor
SPH-D710.FF18_CL663858_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe [Mirror1 / Mirror2] (RESET user data)
[MD5: 16c7d577feda23d1f4deb448d6453735 / Size: 311,608,965]
Also if you have access to a wifi connection or good 4g speeds I would recommend downloading all of your apps again and truly starting from scratch. It should take about an hour to do it all assuming you dont have hundreds of apps.
Just sync your phone now, do the one click, after boot update profile and prl then sign into google account and resync then start setting up apps. This is when you decide if you really need all the crap you previously had on your phone.

also, not sure if i mentioned that initially all functions were operational after ROM flash....it was only after I got to jacking with stuff, did that happen. Oh yeah, also have had a few soft resets occur ass well.
Here, enter the link below in your url bar (assuming you are on Windows). It is sfhub's one click. Just click the file after it downloads and flash it.

Be sure to go to the thread and thank him, just posted the link so you would have the right one.
Word of warning, you are going to lose your apps and will have re download them. If the phone doesn't boot after flashing it, re download again because you simply had a bad download.

Thx....one question. I've read threads, albiet, not really any thing current (like late 2011), expressing bricking issues upgrading from GB to ICS. Should I not stick with GB? Or m I already on ICS? Is the Build no. on my "About Phone" list accurate or does it not recognize modifications?

The link I posted will give you stock rooted ICS. Flashing through odin isn't very dangerous as long as you don't touch your phone while doing it and only flash the file I linked to. And don't restore any titanium backup apps this time unless you can differentiate system apps from store apps.

With restoring your apps. In titanium back up, hit restore missing apps. Then before you hit restore make sure restore only apps not apps+data. This way its only the apps you have downloaded and they are fresh.

Also dont flash anything from the recovery included with stock rom. Use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421 or some other safe kernel

It sounds to me like when you used TiBu to move apps to SD you accidently moved system apps including the systemui.apk and dialer and/or contacts possibly. When moving apps to SD thru TiBu never move apks in red, also never restore those apps or their data if you switch to a different rom version

Ah....which is the logical approach in hind sight, thank you for preventing the same from reoccurring AGAIN! You guys are a life saver.....well once again, you guys are life saver, well at the very least, a smartphone saver! Cuz this one has come very close to being spiked like a game winning touchdown more than once. Though I'm well aware who is responsible for its problems. I'm so glad to have checked back before starting over and have since "read the effing manual" on TBU and with your expert advice, I may even be able to salvage what little of my sanity I still possess. Keep the info coming if you've remembered anything else I might be missing or overlooking. Thanks again for your time....as a father of two teenage boys and too many hobbies, I well appreciate how valuable a commodity time is.

[Q] TiBu And GooManager

2 questions
1) When I use goomanager and search for compatible roms, why does it show no roms were found? Im using stock everything, rooted.
2) TiBu, when i back up all apps and system data, it hangs on "com.android.sharedstoragebackup" Does anyone know whats wrong with this?
Don't back up the system stuff. Only cause problems when you try to restore it
As Mike said, stay away from backing up or restoring any system stuff.
As far as Goo...stay away as well even if it did show anything lol. Its best to come here to the xda Threads so that you can read about the current rom releases and updates. Also the Devs can add notes here better than they can on Goo.

Thanks for both replies.
I will listen to both of u.
but just for knowledge sake.
1) Why doesnt it show any roms on Goo
2) so most poeple would not back up system data? What is that anyways?
I did a full twrp backup, that should include everything, TiBu's benefit is having the option to restore certain items. Would any of those include system data?
A nandroid takes a full "portrait"of your system. TiBu only restores individual component s of your system
If you back up system info from say ics and then restore it to jb, it won't work out well. The framework is different
Not sure why it doesn't. Maybe an issue on Goo's end. I just downloaded goo on my note 2 and it is the same way.

The issue isn't really a matter of using it to flash ROMs - which really just delegates the work to TWRP, assuming that's the recovery you're using - so much as using it to find ROMs. You're much better off finding ROMs, say, around here, where info about the ROMs, support, etc. is right there along with the ROMs themselves.
It just Makes Senseā„¢.

[Q] A couple noob Android questions.

Okay, I have a couple questions.
I currently have a rooted AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3, and I have a couple questions.
Question 1: When I wipe the cache and the data and all that, how do I save the apps I have on there and put them on my new rom? (ANSWERED)
Question 2: Will my contacts sync with AT&T on a new rom? If not, how do I save my contacts? (ANSWERED)
Question 3: (This could be an iffy question, don't answer if you don't want to.) What's a good rom that has good battery life but maintains good gaming? Or if you could just suggest a few good roms to start with, that would be fine.
I appreciate anyone who replies! Thanks.

1: If you don't want to lose app data, use Titanium Bakcup from the Play Store. Only way to keep app data when wiping /data or factory reset.
2: Sync your contacts with your google account, never will be lost again.
3: I prefer CyanogenMod. 10.1 is the latest for 4.2. AOKP is also great, there's 4.2 also. Make sure you do a lot of research about what a 4.2 ROM will do to your phones internal partitions. Or there are plenty stock based ROMs out there with TW.

Thanks for your help, now I just need to find out what a good rom would be.
I always hate this answer but it truely is the best way to go. Flash ROMs and try multiple out. I like lots of ROM but am currently on cyanogenmod. I also tried black jelly and urban karnage and loved them both for tw ROMs.

For Question 3 it's hard to define what the "best" rom is because there are many different opinions. I would look around and read up on the threads see if there are any issues and what people are saying about the rom. Try and find a video review on youtube and after all that just weigh your options and see what fits you best.

[Question] AOKP Settings Backup And Restore

Hi,
Currently on Task650's latest AOKP, Is there any way I can backup and restore my AOKP system and ROM settings?
Also, a somewhat unrelated question. I know Google Play keep track of every app you've downloaded and from there one can easily reinstall everything lost post clean flash. I also know there is an option where apps are immediately reinstalled upon logging into Google account, post clean flash. I was wondering if I could customize that list before everything begins to automatically reinstall? It is because I don't use every app I've downloaded before. I've downloaded hundreds of apps, but only really use like 20.
Thanks!
Use the search feature it comes in handy...
You can back up your rom and rom settings with your recovery and the only way to select which apps you want is to uncheck there "restore all apps" when booting up your device and manually downloading them.

I love how people just automatically assume you don't search. I did search. Didn't find what I was looking for, so I'm here. Plus I had more than just the one question.
I've explored my recovery (TW) and the only backup I can see is a partition backup, where the system partition alone, for me anyways, is more than twice the size of the ROM. What I was asking was just settings and settings only. Maybe there is an option for CWM that isn't available in TW?

Restoring system settings is not advised as it can cause issues. This is one of the prices you pay for installing custom roms.
