Phone and contacts gone! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Everything was running fine last night then all of a sudden I get the com.android.phone unexpectedly stopped working message. I tried to factory reset, restore from a backup from a week ago and nothing. It wouldn't even work with my wife's sim card. Mine number is supposed to be ported over, yet neither of my sim cards work. In my wife's phone everything works fine with her's and my sim cards. I can't access the web on WiFi but I can't access the play store. Can't find the phone process to restore in titanium. I can't access the mobile networks because it says no sim card. Long story short, my phone has no contacts app, no phone app, and not recognizing sim card. That's all I've noticed so far. Any suggestions?

I just factory reset again and went into recovery and it didn't have my 2 latest backups anymore. It brought up old backups from a couple months back. Ever since I went twrp its done this a few times. Like it magically erases some of my files then brings them back. So I installed an old back up of liquid smooth and my phone service magically reappeared. May just stick with this a bit until I can figure out what's going on with twrp and these touch wiz ROMs. I was on jelly beast and Jedi mind trick jb when this problem came up

go to settings... apps...contacts...clear cache/data and reboot
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using XDA Premium HD app

The only problem with that is that contacts and phone were completely erased from my phone. No icons for them, no sign of them in titanium, nothing. Like my phone became an iPod or something. I couldnt get to mobile networks because it said no sim. I have no idea. Its like all the code or programming written for it to have any sign of phone function just disappeared. Been using Jedi jb and jelly beast with no issues till now and it affected both of them including my backups. It wasn't until my old liquid smooth backup that the phone function came back.

sim cards almost never go bad.
try your sim on anther phone
if its functional copy contacts ....etc
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using XDA Premium HD app

It had to be something within the ROM. I tried the sim from my wife's phone in my phone and it still didn't work. I will redownload the ROM and try a clean fresh install. I've seen where other people had this issue but not to the effect that the phone and contacts apps were completely gone from seemingly existing.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2

I downloaded jelly beast again ABC did a fresh install and everything seems good now. Phone and contacts are back and work.

Flash another rom, Myn's rom supports the cam in 004.
Same thing happened to me and I went thru 4 evos In 1 week all of them did the same thing. So I thought to myself I am extremely unlucky but then realized that there was one thing all of my phones had in common, my sd card. I saved my pics to my computer and reformated my card and sure enought it worked. So try reformating your card or try a different card and if that don't work go to sprint and raise hell.

Reading is hard, he said he is not rooted.
And yes, I had this same problem happen, after reformatting my SD card all was good. But make sure you backup your data to your pc, so you can transfer back after formatting.

Take all the pics off of your sd card and format it with the evo then replace the pics into the DCIM folder and you will be fine. It has happened to me too on my replacement phone too.
I tried format didn't work but if I put pictures back in it should work

I have the same problem as well and I can say with confidence the sd card is the problem. I got a new evo and a new sd card all was good until I copied my old files to the new card. The camcorder stopped working until I formatted the card then it worked. Afterwards I copied my pics only to the card and it was working fine. When I moved some apps to the card it stopped working again. I'm not really sure if it's a single app that's causing that or moving apps to the card is the problem.

[Q] New Epic?

My 4g radio recently crapped out on my phone, so I have to go get a new epic. My question is, if my current phone is rooted and I have a nandroid backup, can I restore everything back to the new epic once I root it?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I just hour my new phone yesterday. Personally I backed everything up using titanium backup pro. Once I got my new phone rooted and installed my rom and my theme I was running before hand I restored just the apps in tb no data. I'm just manually setting everything up again as its a fresh phone and it deserves a fresh start.
A good idea before installing all your apps again is to see what your phone can handle as far as oc and uv. That way your not fighting the apps fc when testing your limits

Alright, thanks for the response. Sounds like a good idea.

Just woke up to a blank sd card.. (not really)

A sd card symbol popped up on my notifications and when i clicked it it said my card was blank or had unsupported format. That freaked me out as i have a lot of stuff on my sd card. Clicking the icon would ask me to format the card or cancel. Going to storage and hitting mount also failed to mount saying blank sd card. Luckily i didn't format and decided to reboot. Everything was still on the card when it restarted. Anyone had this happen? I've always said this phone gets buggy when reading sd cards since i bought it but now it seems its gotten worse on ics builds. Currently running stock FC24. Well I'm just happy my stuff is not deleted and the experience just made me back up my card to my pc just in case.

Need more info to determine why.
What model card is it?
I've had issues with one of my 32gb class 10 cards messing up due to coming loose randomly. Other than that no issues and I have several SD cards for this phone.

Have you ever formatted it or did you use it from the old epic without formatting?
It might need a fresh format and wipe. You might also want to scan it for problems.

Just wanted to see if you've resolved this issue. I had been running Calk's E4GT v 2.9.1 with no problem and recently updated to v 3.0 FC24, ran fine for a few days then noticed a couple days ago some of my apps were missing because my SD card wasn't mounted. Reboot=fixed. Then today it did it 3 or 4 times, once it let me remount and all was fine for a little while. The other times mounting SD resulted in "Bland SD Card" notification and required a reboot.
Just for note, when I updated to v 3.0, I wiped cache/dalvik but not data. Already updated PRL.
Anybody else have a similar issue? Any suggestions?

I ended up upgrading to the FD05 tar and so far it hasn't happened. Maybe its an FC24 issue. I never experienced it on FC22 or previous builds. I can't say for sure thos cuz I've only been on FD05 for a few days and I'm already downloading FD10 lol. But if i run into the issue again I'll bump this thread.

Ok...what on Earth?

So, I've been flashing roms since February, and I am starting to see several random issues all of a sudden.
On a fresh flash of a rom that I have used for a LONG time, I suddenly have force closers on the Weather Unlock animation. My phone reboots randomly (I posted about this issue in rigid detail a few months back). I tried a different Sense 3.5 rom, and I suddenly cannot change certain settings. So, what's going on?
I've also noticed this strange behavior. When I flash from rom to rom, occasionally it will either have the background of the rom before, or the background of the last time that I flashed the same rom. I wonder if "footprints" are being left behind somehow.
And of course, I triple wipe everything, sooo...any opinions/ideas/help?
Using Smelkus 4.3 recovery, by the way.

Remove everything from your SD and format or partion, then if your still having issues go to recovery - other - fix permission and see of that helps. What size and class is your SD?

Well the second thing about the wallpaper that is because you have it set to backup your settings. If you go to settings>privacy check backup then uncheck automatic restore then uncheck backup. So everytime you flash a rom skip through all the start up menus and do what I said above. Having that backup thing checked is linked to your gmail so whenever you signed in it would automatically restore your previous settings

It's a 32gb card, and I don't remember the class. I'll edit my post in a few with that info. But I had those problems before and after my recent format/partitioning of my card. It IS less frequent after the partition, though.

Wow...never thought about that. Strange how it was always checked, but NEVER worked up till recently. It also restores my installed apps, but at a slim chance of success. Usually, I flash, link my email initially, and nothing happens. I've only sren this implemented properly on JB roms, regardless of device.

Are you using a2sd? Anything above a class four and over a certain gig will cause issues. I'm assuming yours is a class ten and that could be some of your issue.

The class 10 shouldn't be a problem, but anything more than 16GB I think may be the problem. Wasn't the evo made only for a maximum of 4/8GB??
Also buy a recognised brand (e.g. Sandisk) to reduce any problems.
I have a Toshiba 16GB Class 10 and so far has played nicely. *touch wood*

I think that the Evo was made for a max of 16gb. But it certainly seems like my sd card is the problem. My original 8gb card became corrupted when my phone dropped (yes, it made me cringe, too...it fell pretty hard...), and I thought a 32gb card was the best idea I ever had. Apparently not. Sucks...but I'm not getting a new card.

I am using a2sd. However, my card wasn't always partitioned, and I had some rebooting issues before the card was ever modified. I am not disregarding what you are saying, but I think the problem goes beyond a2sd. I will confirm, however, that I have had more problems from the time I partitioned my card. But the benefits far outweigh the issues. For example, I LOVE the fact that I can flash a new rom and use Titanium Backup to Batch Install all of my apps without starting and stopping to move them to the sd card for more space.
I use an 32 gig class 4 SanDisk and have never had any problems with it. And on another note, if you're partitioned, when you flash a rom, and are on smelkus just do superwipe and clear temp. Files (aka cache, dalvik cache, and temp. Files) then when you flash your new rom all your apps will still be there as that partition hasn't been wiped. As long as the rom you use supports a2sd. All you have to get back is app data. a nice feature that I love, and have never had a problem with so far.

Does my phone have a virus? ?!!

Hello. For the past 2 day's my phone has been REALLY slow not to mention laggy as hell. It all started when I lend my sd card to a friend overnight so he can watch man of steel along with other movies I had on it. Here is the thing. He's phone is a MESS. He has the s2 and that thing turns off on him ALL the time. Freezes. So now my galaxy note 2 is actin stupid when I download a large game (around 230mb) it begins to lag. The screen will not respond for like 5 seconds then it touches everywhere I did. Ive tried reseting my phone nothing. Tried a back up/dfferent rom. No dice.
What can be possibly wrong all these market "anti virus" scanners are all just imitation

Does the phone to back to normal with the SD card out?
You could try copying your all of your SD card to your computer, deleting all of the files on it, formatting the SD card, and copying back what you need.
Also, I've found my phone used to lag when I racked up too many text messages. I currently use Handcent and have it set to keep only a certain amount per thread...I routinely go through all my threads and delete conversations with people I hardly text as well.
Hope this helps!
Thanks. But its acting like this even without the sd card the one that I use for movies is an extra 32gb this one I have is mine mine dont let no one borrow it. I don't text a lot.

In addition to wiping cache and dalvik cache, do a "fix permissions" under advanced in recovery.
If that doesn't work - I would recommend in recovery that you mount /system and then format system. Then immediately flash a rom or a backup made before the trouble started...
