Just wondering if anyone knows enough about the hardware similarities between the S4 and our beloved Note 2 to comment on the likelihood of a port? Many really neat things being added to TW and the software with the introduction of the S4. If not a good candidate for a port...you guys think that they're working on the same features for a 4.2.2 update for us? I hope so. I got abandoned once by Motorola on my Photon 4G, so swore off Motorola products, now I'm just suspicious of all manufacturers now I suppose.
Isn't the US s4 going to have a qualcomm processor not saying g that makes it impossible, Also some of the features need sensors we don't have correct

Dont know about the processor, you may be right. Didn't think it had any sensors that the Note 2 doesn't have. I assumed the hands free things like waving your hands over the screen, etc...used the proximity sensor and or camera...or in a similar manner in that our Notes are able to recognize our hands when we reach for it to do that quick qlance feature thats in our Motion settings. Unless your referring to some other features that would require sensors that I'm missing.

Some features from touchwiz maybe ported over to the S3 and Note 2. I believe Samsung made a statement about it as well.
Gimmicky things such as S-Translator, Airview with your fingers and other miniscule touchwiz features could be ported. Other hardware dependent features like the IR Blaster can't be.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually track eye movement . I think its just a detects you looking at the screen on a scrollable page. If I'm right then it should work because we already have smart stay in smart rotate

Well it looks like we have the first appearance of S4 Firmware to play around with:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/suddenly-a-wild-samsung-galaxy-s-4-firmware-appears/
I'm sure there are some things from there that one or more of our enterprising dev's will incorporate into their ROMs
I'm actually looking forward to seeing that DUAL CAMERA feature get ported... better yet, the whole S4 camera (particularly the interface and settings).

Cm10 is my favorite rom on the market and I feel its the fastest and smoothest thing you can get as well as adding some very functional features. With any other phone, I would without a doubt be doing everything in my power to install cm10. The note is in a different category however. The note 2 has added functionality in its touchwiz rom that allows for running multiple applications on the screen at the same tine, as well as s pen features such as taking a screen shot and then drawing right onto it.
For those of you that have installed cm10 or other non touchwiz rom, do you miss any of the touchwiz features?
Of course they do.........
but everyone is different the features that they miss still may not be enough to drop CM10 its light and fast and def has its advantages......
i personally on the note will only use TW based roms, i like the features added in it this time around.
I am curious about this. 4.2 has new features I'm excited about, so I'm curious how CM10.1 will turn out. I know the nightly is still fairly new, but I'd like to hear what people say about it, and I'm especially curious if it's possible to port (I'm not sure if I'm using the right term) over that Samsung's TouchWiz has, such as S Note and the ability to trigger it to open when the S Pen is removed.
I can never go back to a touchwiz ROM. I never use the s pen, never use multi window, and I despise the capacitive buttons since my palm always triggers them in landscape. The customizable navbar and spell check are my main reasons for using cm10

There's the Droid DNA, the Spectrum II, the Optimus, even the Nexus 4 and S3. These are all 4.7+ high-resolution (720p or FullHD) devices that I consider competition with the Note II. The main draw and defining feature of the Note II is the S-Pen. If it wasn't for the S-Pen combined with the 5.5" display and Touchwiz software, I probably would not have considered it.

5.5 inch screen and the quad Samsung processors and very nice screen is some very good reasons to go to note 2 versus any of the other phones even if you don't use spen.

Nobody was telling anybody how they should like their phone. I was simply wondering why somebody would buy the Note II and not use (or even be interested in) it's defining feature.
To me, that's like buying a convertible and never putting the top down, or buying a Boss 302 Mustang and not tracking it. Just doesn't make sense to me.

I agree. The S-pen comes in handy for certain things, especially notes, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would.
I had a Treo 750 (came with a stylus) some years ago, the beginning of smartphones. Just having the stylus made things easier. The stylus didn't make the phone it just complemented it IMO. Same with this one only its way advanced and almost part of the phone, again a great thing but not necessary.
I would like to see some type of CM10/TW Hybrid or something that will keep the "cool" features of TW and the S-pen. Maybe someday lol
The DROID dna has some nice hardware but the lack of an sd card slot is a huge turnoff for me. With games coming out being 2+gb its totally unacceptable to be stuck with only 16gb of storage. This also kills the nexus 4 for me. The spectrum 2 SoC sports a weaker gpu and has a smaller screen so that's no competition in my eyes. The Optimus G is competition and S4 with the Adreno 320 gpu seems to edge out the notes 2's SoC but I'm in favor the 5.5 screen and have not had the the best experience with LG phones. The note 2's battery life beats the Optimus G and the Note 2 takes better video if you care about that sort of thing. As far as pictures are concerned the LG has a higher mp rear camera but it doesn't seem to produce better quality images and the front facing camera on the LG is a lower mp camera. The Spen is a nice feature but I like having CM 10/ASOP so that I can have pdroid. If your not familiar with pdroid look it up as it is a great app.
I chose the Note II over the S III for the S-Pen. And, at the time, the multi-view. I want the big screen and big battery and the best performance. But I also want the TouchWiz features. Smart stay, smart alert, pop up play, multi-view, S beam, AllShare Cast, none of that will work on CM10, or AOKP (at least not at the performance TouchWiz will give). I wanted the best Android hardware, and (IMO) the best Android software. If I wanted AOKP more than I wanted TouchWiz I would have a nexus 4, or Galaxy nexus. After the One X I don't plan on buying another HTC device, and the Thrill turned me off LG. Samsung is the only Android OEM I trust for solid hardware and software support after the device ships.
I use the S-Pen just about every time I use my device. I thought after a while the novelty would wear off and I would stop using it. But, I find I enjoy it quite a bit. The only reason I rooted and flashed another ROM was to get multi view. As an added benefit I get to keep all the TouchWiz features I use constantly, and I get to resolve my only two complaints with TouchWiz: more icons on the stock launcher (and keep page buddy), and to choose and re-order the Notification toggles. I can think of many reasons to stay on TouchWiz, but I can't think of a single reason to go on an AOSP based ROM. For me, I don't plan on even trying CM10 or AOKP on this device, even though I couldn't stand running anything else on my One X or S II.

Ironically for me, I bought the Note 2 for the screen and hardware. I knew spen, multi window, and some other features for me would be gimmicks. The ironic part is, that although I rarely use them, for some reason that is why I'm staying on Tw instead of CM10. I rarely use the spen, but I love having those options. I just don't really see how the spen makes anything easier or more efficient. That being said, I love that stupid thing anyway. I considered Nexus 4 but liked removable battery and bigger screen much better.

I think raduque has a bit of a point. Some people, such as myself, like some of the features TW has associated with the S Pen. Some can care less, as many have you stated. For you guys who don't care about the S Pen features, CM10 the way it is now might work out for you. For those of us who do want some of the S Pen features, hopefully it's something as simple as copying some of the APKs containing those features and porting them over. (I wouldn't know the process yet. I haven't even rooted my phone as of yet.) I can personally care less about the TW launcher, itself, since I use and really like Go Launcher EX, but that said, I'd still like to be able to use the S Pen features, like S Notes, Air View, etc.
But then there's features that I'm not sure whether or not comes from TW that I like, such as Quick Glance, Direct Call, Smart Alert, Turn Over to Mute/Pause, Palm Swiping to Screenshot, Palm Touch to Mute/Pause, etc...

All these features are built into the core Touchwiz UX. They could be put in AOSP/AOKP, but so far nobody seems to be interested in coding in those features.
I use most of those features daily, and I'm always scribbling something down in Snote.
Not to mention I find the default Google-stock Android theme to be flat and boring.
The one feature i love in Samsung galaxy S3 and note 2 is the ability to simultaneously open two apps, first app to take top half of screen, second app to take bottom half of screen.
Why isn't this ported to galaxy nexus or nexus 4 yet. I mean at least CM should port this critical function.
My question is, is there any way to have the same results on galaxy nexus?

I don't believe so at this time, I haven't heard of that feature being ported. Honestly I doubt there is enough interest in that to port it. i can see it working much better (and from the looks of it, it does) on the note II
the nexus screen i think is a little small for dual apps at the same time.
its a touchwiz thing, so there might be a port, but im not sure.
I love GMD spen gesture controlling app.
Samsung has made things in these phones that the finger touch will not work when spen is on screen. It's pretty much super and useful. But, I saw GMD gesture controlling app working while I'm writing in the screen with spen. It's an error. But here I'm not asking you to fix it. I appreciate it, because you could do it with your app. Now what I need is that, air view feature without spen. The Note series models (NOTE2, 10.1,8) uses the same features that xperia sola or today's release, s4 for the air view. So I think that Samsung had restricted finger air view feature for the promotion of spen, same as restricting finger touch while s pen in use. Since GMD gesture controlling app could remove the restriction of finger touch while spen in use, I hope that you could do this too(air view without spen). so I request you to try it. So can you?
I guess bumping up the touch sensitivity could do it.
But there are two problems:
1. I don't know if the sensitivity on our device can go that high.
2. There is no supported software. You won't get previews as the software on the Note 2 is build for Air View by the S Pen, and would not recognize Air View with a finger.
But, s4 has same technology..

But, s4 and note 2 shows same software features in air view. S4 is by hand and note2 by s pen. Also, the technology is same. What I guess is that Samsung would make it happen in next update. But I wish to get it early. The update will take2 months or so long. They will need s4 to click the ground.

Edit: Most of the features announced for the S4 will not come to previous devices like Note I & II and the S3. Not officially anyway, because that would harm S4 sales.
So...don't count on official airview on the Note 2, ever.
Maybe Note 3!

But the software wouldn't know what to do with the finger hovering, devs will need to rewrite parts (if possible, I'm not sure) so the app would pop the text/image/anything else.

No it's not the truth. If companies fear such type of sale affection, apple wouldn't have provided the iOS6 update for previous iPhone models. The note 2 released with unique multi window feature and see currently the previous released s3 and note 1 got it. Also, if Samsung fears the affection for their super phone, then they wouldn't have released the galaxy grand. We should think things in the other way, if the update bring same features of s4 to note 2, n2 is going to be the best with unique spen features. It may affect the sales of s4, but it never affect the profit if Samsung. Whatever the model is, phone is of Samsung's.

The S3 does not have air view.
@OP
Note 2 is bigger and has double the RAM of the S3. Plus the S- Pen.
So they have no fear to also boost S3 a bit as well.
But the S3 and S4 do not have many differences in hardware with each other so Samsung has to make them a bit different also software wise as well as hardware wise because the hardware is not improved enough for an S3 owner to make the jump.
This is my thinking.

First of all, the HTC one has a qualcomm 600 processor which is that the same as the Samsung Galaxy S 4 has in USA, except that the s4 is .2ghz faster in terms of clock speed. Second of all, I'm currently on a contract with t mobile and I was talking about upgrading to the Galaxy s4 or the HTC one, so there's no way I can get the eight core s4. The galaxy s4 has a pentile display. Plus I don't really care about the megapixels or ultrapixels of the camera as long as my pics turn out good and not look like they were taken from a potato.

If I had to pick one of those 2 I would probably go with the HTC One, build quality is way ahead of the S4, I'm tired of plastic phones. My S2 has survived its fair share of drops without no significant damage though so I'm happy with that. Processors are nearly the same unless you're comparing the international S4 and HTC One. The One also has a nicer screen (more ppi). It seems like the biggest knock on the One is the fact that it doesn't have upgradable storage and battery but 64GB is more than enough for me and I never carry an extra battery for my S2 so that is pointless. When it comes to camera quality, the S3 with its 13MP will take better pictures when zoomed in since it has more pixels but the HTC One will blow the S4 out of the water when it comes to night pictures or anything with low light (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I was honestly disappointed with the S4, it seemed like all Samsung talked about at the news conference was all the bloatware they added onto the phone that I'm never going to use.
This is a laughable question. S4 stands head and toe over the crap HTC is throwing out nowadays.

As for which one i will choose, I will need to see them side by side first before I make any decisions.

If you are one of those people who root and flash away from Professionally built phone software in favor of barely working featureless lackluster crap produced by CM and it's near relatives there is no point worrying about having the newest phone anyway cuz you clearly are not going to use it for anything other than looking at your reflection. honestly you kids would be just as well off with a flip phone and a be-dazzeler.
I could understand the CM worship if this was a walmart prepaid phone with some lame flavor of aosp on it then CM might be a slight improvement but leaving Touchwiz for CM is a huge downgrade every time, all Tochwiz needs is some speedtweaks and a tweaked kernel.
Anyway +1 going to the S4 when It's here, might add a note 3 or even the note2 if I can get a good deal on it!
Wow makes me regret getting the Nexus 4 after what I saw in the GS4. Should have waited. But one this is having Google's latest and greatest code feels awesome. GS2 also has outstanding support and CM10.1
I really miss HTC's look and quality. But they have always been terrible battery life phones. Each one I've had except for the G2. My GS2 is still a champ and love that samsung releases the CODE that makes CM even possible.
And at the presentation I really have to reconsider no SD support and no removable battery. Just this week my old myTouch 4G I gave to my cousin, the battery can't hold charge. He got it replaced and its good as new. To me, having a removable battery just makes it easier to replace it when it does go bad.
I can kinda live with 16 gig and no SD Card, unless you are a heavy media user. But having a removable battery makes it possible to replace it. I don't mind the Samsung plastic. It is cheap and got a mini dent that I can't figure out how it happened on my GS2. I should have put a screen protector to prevent that. Still a mystery how it happened.
My LG G2X, I've never ever ever used at screen protector and its still flawless. Samsung **** is sensitive. They could at least use better plastics if they are sticking with that material.

Its mainly software on Samsung side but the HTC sense and their new features don't compare to the new temp and face tracking on the snapdragon S4 ImO get a lg optimus pro ..lg seems to be opening up to GPL

If you even read the news... htc is yesterday's news...an exact quote "it's not in the kids club anymore" and that is why they pushed the date back for the htc one release...it's not even that it's hard to root, it's that it leaves traces for the carriers and htc to know you've rooted...

I was waiting for the One but the battery life is poor. Going to hold off for the next Nexus. Have no interest in the S4

Google officially announces KitKat release and the Nexus 5 - http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/android-for-all-and-new-nexus-5.html.
Yeah we'll probably get it a year from now. ..

I have seen absolutely nothing that this release is supposed to do for the Note 3 other than a little more memory efficiency. But hell we have 3gigs of ram (well more like 2.3 but oh well) so i dont really care about that...
Maybe a someone with a little more developing experience knows something I dont?

Potentially tap into always on voice sensor (similar to Moto X) -- see http://www.phonearena.com/news/Alwa...standard-with-Qualcomm-Snapdragon-800_id46105...
Yeah. I asked about this in forum. Seems like there is little interest even though our SOC natively supports it. Smdh.

Happy Holoween indeed! Hopefully this means we'll start seeing AOSP ROMs porting to the Note 3 soon, can't wait to get off of Touchwiz!

And more... http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...duces-battery-consumption-when-playing-audio/
Don't discount 4.4 as being uninteresting for the Note 3 -- it's still early and people are still picking things apart. Beyond the immediate tangibles, I think this is another step towards making the OS a conduit for services (like 4.3 with unified notifications). There is a lot going on and everyone is in a frenzy -- let's see what people are able to dig up.
Edit: I should point out that this is not a confirmed feature for the Note 3 but a potential one given that it is a function drawing off the Snapdragon 800. I don't think this is evident from the paragraph above -- the point being, we don't know what's possible/useful in 4.4 for the Note 3 until we figure a few things out.
I don't really see the interest in AOSP roms for Galaxy Notes, unless you don't use the S-Pen.

Absolutely confirmed. You can use with s voice. S voice sucks. And Qualcomm has it listed as feature of 800 chip set.

The S-Pen hardware worked just fine on CM on the Note 1. I don't care about all the software tweaks as long as I can still take notes and draw with the pen which plenty of S-Pen feature capable third party apps do perfectly fine on AOSP ROMs.

I'd rather have also but soap doesn't get as good battery life and getting the international touchwiz ROM instead of T-Mobile carrier ROM was a humongous difference. But yeah, sketchbook pro is cheap @ $5 and I am sure there are plenty of note taking apps that don't require s-pen but are better with it. Double edged sword on the note series.

I'm still hoping for a Google edition note 3. TW framework + Kitkat so we still retain s-pen tweaks. Biggest appeal of kitkat for me is the unified hangouts/SMS app. The tw sms app along with a lot of the other ui in tw is really beginning to show it's age.

No surprise since they just launched the Nexus 5.
The biggest thing I see is that Android 4.4 no longer requires a secure element for NFC. Rather, it emulates a secure element at a software level. Which means that even though the Note 3 for T-mobile most likely doesn't have a secure element built-in, Google Wallet tap-to-pay will work! The only way carriers can block it now is if they remove the secure element emulation framework from 4.4 for their phones.
Another cool thing with that emulation framework is that in 4.4, your phone can also receive NFC payments from another phone or card! I'm excited to see how this pans out.

The new hangouts, as well as many other apks (play services, launcher, search, camera, clock, keep, etc) work fine on my Note 3 (and Nexus 7) right now. The APKs are all over G+ right now. No need to wait for a hybrid to bring these new apps to our phones.

AOSP has always gotten better battery life than touchwiz. Simply because with AOSP you have less pointless features burning your battery and it is a lighter ROM overall. I came from the note II and once I installed a AOSP ROM going back to touchwiz was like a downgrade in battery, speed and actually useful features like easily customizable navbars and Halo.

I agree I am a huge AOSP Rom fan but don't see myself flashing AOSP because I'll loss S-Pen functionality. The S-Pen is a huge plus on the Note 3.

The hardware functionality of the stylus still works in AOSP. The only thing you lose is the proprietary software (pen window, etc). There are a ton of alternatives on the Play store. I use the stylus everyday but I never use any of the Samsung apps.
