[Q] ROM question for Telus SGH-T989D

I have a simple question and i think ive seen some mention of it, but nothing quite definitive
I want to root my SGSIIX from Telus(989D), and ive figured out that i can follow the same instructions as the T-mobile version here:

It suggests a ROM below that was originally posted for the T-mobile ver, is there any T-mobile branding on it visually such as boot screens etc?
Also...
If a ROM works flawlessly on the tmobile version, will it also work flawlessly on the telus version by default. Ive been eyeballing the possibility of Cyanogen or MIUI, and juggernaut...but i wanna make sure EVERYTHING works perfectly after doing so, or if there are certain things that might not work

Same, specially since im new at this!

yes, they are identical software and hardware

i rooted the phone today there is alot of apps in the t-mobile version compare to the telus one I followed the instructions from this page

the 4g network was gone could not connect to it only 3g was working
i uninstalled most apps with titanium backup pro but i end restoring to the back up i made from CWR
gonna give it another try when they are going to release a rom that is from telus version of the phone

The 4g is broken for me to ...it seems like the modders are only interested in the t-mobile version to, so it looks like even rooting(based on the fact that the rooted rom is also a t-mob) wont even be possible

What do you mean rooting? All you need to do is flash CWM and then the SU package, no need to change any ROM at all.

I rooted my Telus device using the T-Mobile instructions and all was well at home, it stayed on the Telus network and also keep 4G speed.
I went to work with it, where Telus service is very poor, and as soon as I lost Telus it roamed to Rogers and did not try and return to Telus even though I was in an area where Telus signal was good.
In the end I changed the device to wcdma mode only and set the device to manual provider and selected Telus and have had no problems with 4G or not being on Telus...

Do you happen to have a link? I followed a guide on this forum that said the easiest way was to flash the rom!

I rooted my phone, it still said 4G.
When I installed beastMOD it says 3G. But I am definitely getting 4G speeds (20mbps). So.. maybe a bug with the difference in phones?

trust me...stick with the telus rom. its actually better code then tmob. newer drivers and less debug code. I tried the tmob and its gawd aweful. if u want goodies...slap a kernel on it then theme it. best way to go imho.

For Telus you don't need to change roms when you root.
I'm running the stock rom on my phone with a modified kernel to allow the phone to run faster and the v6 memory mod as well as removing the clock from notification bar.
Installed Titanium and removed a bunch of the crap that came stock with phone too.

Do i install a kernel the same way i install a ROM? Aka through CWM? And if so,which do you use?

I was using Jugs kernel but I switched to Synergy and like it better.
And yes.. I just download it to my sd card and install it thru CWM

Get the recovery.tar from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315390
Flash that through ODIN (PDA mode in ODIN, Download mode on Phone)
Then, place the SU update (http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip) on the root of the SD card. Reboot to recovery, select install zip from SD Card and select the SU update. Reboot and you're rooted without having to use another ROM.
The reason why you keep getting a 3G signal when you are getting 4G speeds is because you are using a T-Mobile ROM. The way the Telus one works, if you don't have a ROM that is based off of Telus's source code, even though everything works perfectly fine, your signal will be "3G". It's really only an aesthetic thing, as the speeds themselves are 4G.

So what kernel do you recomend.

Not sure for kernel, I just used the stock one. I just finished flashing Synergy, haven't tried anything yet! I seem to have this issue where I need to re-search for my network after going into download mode (normal behavior?) so I need to get that working before I want to benchmark.

I fully tested a custom juggernaut rom and a rooted Telus stock rom and the juggernaut rom is waaayyy better. Smoother more options as well as better signal. True it says 3g but actually I get better speeds than stcok Telus rom. In my opinion after several tests don't use stock Telus. It may be better code than T-Mobile stock rom but custom juggernaut rom is way better

I once had a Fascinate, when i flashed a voodoo mod kernel and tried to remove it, the phone became bricked and the entire insides of the phone had to be replaced
Can flashing a kernel mess with the boot loader(which i assume is cwm)? Is there anything i need to do differently when changing kernels as well, cause so far with ROMS ive just been resetting and flashing with ease.Also do Roms come with kernels, so flashing a rom will either go back to default/other kernels?

Hey guys, sorry for posting this, but im desperate and have read until my eyes are falling out of my skull. I am willing to work with any dev if they need specific work/software ran/info to make this happen. Is there, or is there not clear concise directions on rooting SGH-T889v (wind mobile variant of note 2)?
remember we use AWS for our signal, the modem stuff is all different. this is were my expertise kinda falls short. BUT I AM WILLING TO HELP TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. As far as iv'e seen there are no current methods of rooting this phone which is a damn shame considering its horsepower. i saw the all in one toolkit for note 2's, and i simply cannot afford to donate to unlock the functionality of the update that supports wind. So only ONE guy knows how? I believe dev's should get paid and should accept donations, they are the real workers and smart guys. I don't work for free either, However this kinda defeats the purpose of the ecosystem we fought so hard to have.... open and accessible platforms were we the users are in control. By with holding the method, its no longer donating, it's close sourcing ala apple,microsoft, etc. Zero offence to that guy, id just really love to "own" MY phone. Can someone PLEASE help? pass the word? anything? a peep?

If you don't mind the flash counter, you could simply use an Odin flashable (N7100) CWM tar, push the superuser zip of your choosing to /data/media/ (linked to /sdcard/) and install that from CWM.

What I know is that the rooting part is all fine and dandy, sure its a little harder than the rest, but its okay, it not too hard. The problem I keep reading is that the ROMS aren't truly compatible with the device, as data become atrociously slow. A method one, respected fellow, recommended we take was to flash a modem that is "for" our device variant. I say that because people reported bootloops due to it. Also there's a greater chance for our device to lose its IMEI number...not sure if these problems have been resolved. But yeah your problem really isn't rooting its the whole deal afterwards, again I am going by what I've read, I myself do not wish to take the chance of it becoming unusable, so i stay far until I got time to research more and some brilliant helpful mind comes along and solves all problems.

i think thats the issue, we just generally need someone more brilliant xD as per the "gentleman" that again, suggested using the donating kit, please re-read my post. whats this business about a flash counter????

darn shame still nothing regretting purchasing this phone completely due to this :/

I used the toolkit to root my N2 (Videotron T889v) without any problems. Just used the T-Mobile option since they are the same phone, just different software. The only difference is the modem from what I've read. Rooting does not change the modem that you currently have right now. If you decide you want to install a custom rom, then you may have to flash your modem back. I am currently using Jedi X rom without any problems and I can honestly say that it's faster than stock. He also provides a link with our modem so we can flash it after the install. All the T-Mobile software has been taken out, so you won't have to deal with any of it. Here are the links for the toolkit and rom.

There are 2 Jedi Roms available. Jedi X has the multi-window function working but no wifi calling. I believe the other is called Jedi Master and that one has wifi calling but no multi-window. I'm not sure if the wifi calling is a T-Mobile thing but I never installed that rom and can't really give much more info on it. In the end, you can always go back to stock if you're not satisfied. You can find a copy of your stock rom at sammobile. I would suggest making sure it's still available before doing anything.
As for the OP, this is my first time dealing with a flash counter although not my first time rooting. The flash counter is some type of software that Samsung puts in their phones to be able to tell if you have "tampered" with the phone's software. From what I've noticed, when you put your phone in the "download" state and install anything, that triggers the counter to rise. If you send your phone to Samsung for service and the counter is not 0, they will deny service since you would have broken your warranty. There is a program called Triangle Away that will return your counter back to 0, should you need to return the phone to Samsung. Although in my case it would only take it back down to 1 using their instructions. I finally got it back to 0 by adding an extra step. From what I've read, I think it depends on the kernel that you're using. Here is the link for the program.

so you flashed the modem that ptmr3 provided for the t889v along with his jedi x rom and all good is good? no signal issues ? you get hspa+?

I'm on Wind Mobile T889v Note 2. And I cant wait for this phone to get rooted so that I can run debian or whatever have you full blow linux desktop experience on my phone.
The current limited version of android on its own is too limiting for the processing beast that this phone is.

That is correct. Never had any issues whatsoever. Always get full signal strength, no disconnections and overall great service. As long as you flash after the rom, you will get your modem back. To be honest, the rom itself has never changed my modem, I always just flash it in case it's just reporting it as an error. In the directions it states that it will change it but I always check it and it has remained the same every time.

After you flash the rom (if you're flashing Jedi) you need to let it sit for 10 minutes on the first boot up (after the android logo, just use the reboot option after the 10 minutes). Once you've booted up and finished your setup, just go back into cwm or twrp and flash the modem.

how did you reset the flash counter with triangle away? it doesnt seem to work on my 889V

The tutorial for Rooting and all these ROMs present in android development section, are they the same for the T-989D Canadian version? Flashing them would work? I'm tried searching but it would just bring up roms based on T-989D. Just need a quick confirmation before I root and flash. Thanks.:angel:

I'm pretty sure that if something can be flashed on T989 (T-Mobile), it can be flashed on T989D (Telus/Koodo). I understand that the are just some small differences wrt access to download mode and recovery. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079776

Short answer is yes! Everything you will find here is working perfectly fine on the canadian version.
So go ahead and root/flash away!

I have a T989D on Koodo which I've been messing with quite extensively, and yeah, everything is basically the same. The download/recovery mode linked above is the only major difference.
One thing of note, if you end up messing up the device and need to fully reflash from Odin, the t-mobile stock may not work. I tried over and over to recover from what was essentially a brick (ultra, ultra slow) and it just stayed that slow, even though it did seem to boot and connect and everything. It was totally unusable, however.
I found a different one that did work however, I can't seem to find the post anymore but I'm sure you'll be able to get it if you need it, there seem to be others out there with the same name, but not quite the same filesize. That shouldn't really matter as you'll doubtless go back to a custom rom anyway, the point is just to get you back to something that works.
For reference, the name of the one that worked for me is "SGH-T989_UVLH1_Stock_Odex_zipaligned_signed.zip" and it's 422 MB. This post seems to have a Koodo stock zip as well as the T-mobile one, it's about 100MB less but again, that really shouldn't matter so long as it's Koodo.
Hopefully you'll never need to use it, but I just wanted to let you know that even if you have to recover and some files don't seem to be working, keep trying, because the correct ones are out there! Just may need to search a bit for 'em

A few more things SGH-T989D owners may want to be aware of:
1) This is an excellent resource: [ROM][Stock]T989UVLI4 (4.0.4) ♛ T989DTLLE4 (4.0.3) ♛ T989DTLLG2[ODIN][TWRP/CWM]
2) You might want to search and replace all "T989" with "T989D" in build.prop
" " replace all "TLLG2" with whatever radio your new ROM is using.
If you're on Koodo you might want to assign that to the ro.carrier property
3) If you've got a data plan with you might want to search the web for your carrier's apn info and insert it into "Settings|Wireless & networks|Mobile networks"
Note: This stuff is optional in the sense that your stuff is probably going to work if you don't make these changes. I haven't always updated all this after switching to a new custom rom, but I did notice that I showed up on the Telus network as a T989 as opposed to a T989D on the Koodo network. Really they're the same network but ... I don't know. Maybe I just over think things... I do like the fact that when I plug my phone into the computer or go to the play store or whatever that my phone reports as what it actually is and what radio it uses etc. I don't really care that much as long as my stuff works and I have access to apps that are appropriate for the hardware I'm using. YMMV.
Note2: Most of this info can be gleaned from your stock rom's "CSC" folder and build.prop file. When I have a little more time I'll write this up so its more understandable for those new to flashing Roms. Just wanted to mention that there are a few other tiny, nearly insignificant differences btw the T989 and T989D so that the OP and/or others can address these points if they choose to. At least not be surprised if it looks as though they're using data on a network with a different phone.
Note3: Maybe the only thing that matters is an imei number from your SIM. I don't really know. Be glad to be "told" by anyone that knows. I just know that these things are different even if they don't make a bit of difference in practice.

Hello I'm new to posting on the forums, sorry If I've missed the answer to this question already!
I have a Koodo SGH-T989D that I got in September, before that I was using a non smart flip phone . So I'm quite new to this whole rom business, but even android/ smart phone os in general.
I've been able to flash many roms in the past couple months and have a good understanding of what it is i'm doing. Never had an issue I couldnt fix myself actually, so I've never made an account.
This latest problem has me puzzled though, I've totally lost data connection on my s2x while using any radio. I use SGH-T989D_TLLG2_Koodo_radio but I tried UVLI4 just to see.
However I did change a few things up from my usual routine to flash 4.2.1
1: changed twrp to 2.4.1.0 from 2.2 cwm flashable zip
2: moved all my zips to sd card and formatted internal memory(to eliminate possible issues)
Before this I was using twrp 2.2 and only doing a clean install, not formatting internal sd without any issues or instability.
I've been on [4.2.1 | 4.2.2] AOKP :: jb-mr1 :: build 3 and very impressed with it, except this one issue.
In the thread there is a post that refers to getting data working with koodo, so I think its an apn/proxy setting. I just am not sure where I would have to change these settings.
Just restored a recent nandroid backup and everything works fine.
Can anyone help me out, any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Go to settings > wireless and network, more... > mobile networks > access point names > then hit your options button > New APN > enter the details found on the page linked above.

Ususally associated with radio upgrades; but rather than get too particular, its good practice to check the apn info after any ROM upgrade. If you think about it, any of the hercules upgrades are going to be the same across the board for any given update. Where they're different is where we want to pay particular attention. In this case, carrier specific information.

[Q] Just recovered from bad encription and need a little help

first of all i was lucky all I had to do was go back and use a root 66 image to recover using odin.
Now i know i will sound like a newb sorry please bear with me if you can.
From the start i was on 4.1.2 on SRx Mod i decided Hay i should encrypt my phone (bad idea i got stuck in a boot loop) so after searching for how to fix it i was told to use the unbrick then i wad told to use route 66 i choose route 66. I have since successfully flashed rooted 4.1.2 but i have a few questions.
First route 66 lets you choose which recovery you wish to use. now to install a recovery (my first root it came with CWM) Should i just download the app and install CWM with rom recovery or use Goo manager to install TWRP? or should i use odin to flash it? if i should flash it where should i get the correct files?
Second.
Say I would like to update to 4.3 and take advantage of roms again. What is the safest way to go about this. Depending on rls I have been able to update via recovery and a new rom and i have had to use odin. I believe (not sure) safest way to go from a major rls to another it should be done with odin. Like going from ICS to JB so should I use odin again to root to 4.3?
So to shorten my question
How do i install recovery on a freshly rooted (re rooted via route 66) Also i am currently runnning 4.12 to update to 4.3 do i need to use odin and a 4.3 image to be safe? or can i install a 4.3 rom and it will update.
In all now that my phone is working I am weary of just trying and want to do it the correct way and now i know trying to use encryption is dumb!

When it comes to Recoveries, choos if you want CWM or TWRP. Both are good. Based on that get either Rom Manager app for CWM or Goo Manager for TWRP. Let the app install the recovery for you.
If you want 4.3, then look for Stock Mod Rom in Android Development section. Flash that rom via CWM/TWRP. Make sure to follow the instructions in the Rom's thread. Particularly the part where it wants you to flash ATT insecure kernel. The Rom is Rooted. Do not flash 4.3 via Odin.

I have been away for a little while and i wanted to make sure. SO to get it straight
Right now I just got back from boot loop with route 66 via odin.
To go on i simply get CWM or TWRP with the respective program (rom manager or goo manager)
Then get the 4.3 rom from the rout66 thread and update to 4.3 via recovery.
If not which rom do i use.

So from base 4.1.2 i can update to any 4.3 rom i choose? I just want to make sure as most major releases have some issues at the beginning maybe everything is sorted and their is no problems,
One thing i want to ask is can i choose another rom as sometimes i like to switch to and from touchwiz
So i guess my question now is once i install a recovery program of my choice (i always used CWM so ill probably stick with that)
Can I install any rom no problem? as far as changing versions only go up to 4.3 dont go back down with a recovery flash?
SO AFAIK right now that everything is all good and i wont mess my phone up again when loading a rom.

I appreciate your help I haven't been following the development for a couple months So i am Rusty also its been a while since i had to start from scratch with odin and at that time we did not have the GREAT list of Official Images so I got a rooted rom that had CWM already installed. I want to get to how i was before when i was enjoying the work of the devs and loving it. being in stock reminds me of how much work the devs do YOU GUYS ARE GREAT (if any even read this thread)

I hope this is the ROM you are talking about and if so what do i do about the modem issue as I am coming from 4.1.2 IDK if i have the correct modem installed. All i have right now is Route 66 rooted 4.1.2 and CWM recovery I also created a Nandroid as soon as i got recovery so i can ave a pretty clean android to go back to if anything happens.
I am sorry i may be annoyed if i were you possibly so i hope you are hanging in there with me i really appreciate it once i do this ill be back in the game and wont need any more help. I just need to get this part sorted, THANK YOU
So other than the modem thing I think i got it, i just hope i dont have to mess with the modem IDK if I'm ready to try something that could hard brick my phone after just recovering it

Flashing the modem won't brick it. It's the exact same procedure as flashing the kernel, and the risk level is pretty much the same. As long as your device is the T999, you don't have anything to worry about. Just check the md5 on the download to make sure its not a corrupted/bad download. Even if you flash the T999L/T999V/I535 modem, it shouldn't brick. It just wouldn't get signal till you flash the correct one again. Many, many people have flashed the modems with no problems at all.

Anyway so even though the warning says i can brick it with a modem change really all that will happen is that i will just not get Data until i install the correct one got it.
And unless anyone posts otherwise The first 4.3 rom i should install is Stock Mod Rom by @saranhai and also flash the modem T999UVUEMJC via recovery?
I tried the modem map but i had no success with getting to to work, first it said the link was not supported and i needed to revert to GMaps Classic so i did but i got the same results. Random places all over the world (some in the sea) some said city and modem some were simply city's so i think its out of date so i suppose that the worst that can happen is that i get no data i suppose i can try the other modem listed on the roms page?
If someone knows (as their are two maybe its east west cost or something of the like i live in southern California south of la but furthest from the border of Mexico in San Diego so north San Diego county but anyone that knows the area may know of the massive military base i live south east of Camp Pendleton
(off topic but if a war comes to our shores i pray i am dead already or something divine as i live very close to a large Marine Training base and camp/base in General and right next to it (on the coast) is a dual Nuclear Reactor Power plant and one reactor has been malfunctioning and AFAIK its just being maintained to keep anything catastrophic from happening (which i believe IDK for sure was the reason why it is still running but not producing power)

Many people warn about that because on many devices it is true. just like a kernel or recovery though, if you flash the wrong thing to its partition, it can brick. I.e. If you flash a recovery to the modems partition.
A lot of times people bring habits from their old devices. In our case, while it is possible, it's highly unlikely you'd brick flashing the modem. We know it's not going to flash the wrong item/partition. Several people have tried flashing the I535, T999L, T999N modems and all that happened was they got no working signal. Flashed back to the correct modem and all was good again.

i was just about to do this althoug i downloaded the rom and the modem but now what about the "insecure Kernal" I dont want to mess my phone up again sorry for all the questions its just after you mess up your phone when yoyu come back to roms and its just like getting a traffic ticket for a little bit you drive like you just got a ticket REALLY SAFE with no nerve so sorry but thats my mindset i just messed up my phone and dont want to do it again (i just finished paying for it too so i donk want to break my just paid off 600 dollar car lol.
so yeah AFAIK the post sys all i need is the modem but do i need the kernal too as it may not be listed as it is know its needed at one point when updating versions?

Stuck on Samsung boot screen

I rooted my old milestone many years ago but havee been keeping my devices stock ever since, until today that is. Today I decided I wanted to try to root my Samsung SGH-I747M with Telus and everything seemed to start off smoothly. Once installed the SuperSU stopped working. I tried fixs I had read online such as updating the app, but this did not work. I read on a forum that you could flash something to disable know to help fix the problem. When I tried going this avenue I was not able to reboot my phone. I tried restoring from a backup taken before flashing, but I havent done any of this in so long im not entirely sure the backup took properly. At one point I got a message saying no OS was installed but after restoring this seemed to go away. I apparently do not remember anything about rooting from my milestone and am hoping someone may be able to help me get out of this mess. I am currently downloading the stock firmware and I think I will try flashing it tomorrow. I also was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a thread on xda that went into a more detailed explanation of how rooting works, what specifically roms and flashing all is and does. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Only problem is I already attempted to follow this and my phone will no longer boot up. Also I tried navigating through the stickies. couldn't find much info for my device. I will be trying to flash the stock firmware tonight but I want to have a clear understanding on what flashing is and what the difference is between os firmware kernel and rom and such BEFORE flashing this firmware tonight. I hope someone will be able to help.

Well that info is already in the Sticky Index. Understanding what you're doing (or about to do) is really important but you gotta start reading, it's all there.
OS, firmware and ROM are the same thing.
When your phone boots, it basically goes: Bootloaders -> Kernel -> ROM (OS).
The kernel has pretty much all the "underground" controls (RAM, Mhz, governor, scheduler, BT, Wifi, etc).
I won't write everything but those are the basics.
Also, having a Canadian variant of the S3 (that's what the M is for), doesn't change much other than flashing bootloaders and stock ROM (which you'll wanna use the Canadian variant bootloaders and Telus ROM for stock). Everything else is basically the same.

Sweet I will definitely check that out. So I did flash twrp to my phone. Is it possible that I flashed the version say for the i747 but not the m version and that is why the phone wont move past the samsung screen? Also should I attempt to get rid of twrp before flashing the stock firmware. This should answer all my questions and then I will explore the stickies some more.

If flashing a stock ROM, flash the Telus one. If flashing a custom ROM, it doesn't matter (I747 or M variant), as long as it's D2LTE.
Your recovery doesn't change anything to flashing with Odin, it will overwrite it.

Flashing the stock firmware fixed my problems. Thanks for all of your help and I will definitely be checking out the links that you sent me before trying to root again tomorrow.
