stock rom repo's - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

how come rwilcos stock roms are smaller file sizes than the manufactures stock rom size..? To gain root you do is inject it through a custom recovery and then flash back to stock and if you want then remove bloat.....but even with these steps the manufactures rom still remains heavier why is that...is rwilcos leaving out some system files or what?

Not sure I'm understanding your question..
When we make them for the Repo, we usually pack them for smaller download size..
Are you saying that once extracted you're comparing sizes and they are in fact smaller?
I can guarantee that we do not remove anything prior to public release.
Please clarify.

i was refering to the upload not the extraction. thanks you answered my question anyways

You're welcome.
I hope you understand my concern where people may think we "remove" anything from a stock build. I just wanted to clarify that it doesn't happen.
Glad you have the answer, and thanks for asking. If you asked, I'd bet someone else may think the same. Glad to clear it up.

Moho, I'm sure that if anything "is" removed it's probably something that's not needed and it'll probably enhance the performance of the rom.

Considering RWilco taught Garwynn, myself and others on packing (based off what he was taught by sfhub), I can say without a doubt that we do not in fact remove anything from the stock tars.
While I appreciate what your comment means, I want there to be zero doubt about anyone removing anything from stock. Otherwise it wouldn't be stock.
I think this conversation has ran it's course and doubt shouldn't be interjected into what the repo is or what it provides.
I will ask for this to be closed by a mod.
I hope you understand what this conversation could lead to and its not needed to be entertained. No offense meant.

Thread Closed, hope the above is enough, if not, please PM Rwilco and ask that way to get a direct answer.

Using both odex and deodex in the same ROM

Ran across a thread today detailing how to use deodex and odex both in the same rom. Seems very interesting and I don't see why we couldn't do this with the E4GT. Here's the thread detailing it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437799
I'll try it in a bit and report back. If anyone else does it before me, let us know if it works.
EDIT: I was a bit misled by the title (it was too early). It changes the verify-bytecode and a couple other things. It doesn't actually give you both, just the claimed performance boost you have when using odex ROMs. If you want odex/deodex ability on the fly or to have odex but retain the proper file inside the .apk in order to update/mod we already have something for that
That being said, this *should* give you the same performance without actually odexing a ROM.
EDIT 2: So I tried it, prevented my phone from booting. Don't change the dalvik-cache flags. Not sure if they vary from ROM to ROM but on Calks 2.8.1 it's set to m=y so leave it at that. Otherwise you'll probably have the same issue I did. The important part is telling it not to verify the bytecode.
interesting.. thanks for the share.

I would assume you get the best of both worlds. The customization you get with deodex but the lower RAM usage, faster boot times, and overall buttery smoothness you get with odex. Of course none of the claims made for odex have been throughly proven but that's the general consensus.
Mik used to do this with his sense 3.0+ roms on the og evo

[FIX] Dual Core always appears to be on OR off, governors default to performance.

Maybe some of you on custom ROMs have noticed that your second core functions strange, which would also mean terrible battery life and abnormally hot phones.
Well, this is due to something causing the cores to switch governors to "performance" upon boot. The only way to fix it is from a script or other app that controls CPU. That's not all. The second core seems to not function according to specs. It will either always stay on, or always stay off. mpdecision doesn't appear to work properly.
Well, I've narrowed this down to "samsungani" and "samsungpowersound" which are located in /system/bin/. Removing these at an attempt to get custom boot animations working and to get rid of boot sounds are what's causing the funky core behaviors.
The fix is to restore the two files and chmod them 755 as well as chgrp to 2000 to get them back to the way they're supposed to be.
I'm not sure if any of this effects custom kernels but it sure does on the Stock kernel.
The file I uploaded will restore the samsungani and samsungpowersoundplay files to /system/bin/ as well as copy over silent PowerOn and PowerOff sounds.
Wow that's awesome that you figured this out. Great job!!

Does this do anything to the cpusleeper app (eugene)? Not the script, but the actual app for those who have it installed? Will the zip you provide defeat the need for the app? Thanks for any additional info!

Nah, the zip will only be adding those files back to /system//bin/ if they were removed, like in order to get support for custom boot animations.

Just flashed it rom definitively seems alot more responsive I was seeing the lag and just had some plain weird stuff going on glad we have a dev lime you to find stuff like this and squash it. Do we need to flash this after we flash a rom obviously your rom will have the fix so I'm not worried about it but for others who arent using your rom.
Edit: is there any way I can test to insure both cores are doing what they are supposed to be doing like an app per say

Well, it really only will matter if your current ROM includes a different boot animation and/or removes those files. In any other case, it will do nothing.

OK thanks again love the rom I know you get asked this a lot but if you ever need a tester let me know I use to test for mijuah but my son stole my s2 so I'm bored now lol.
Zip applied, and I had to duplicate the process to confirm what I thought I saw:
Been running blazer 1.6 for a few days now and I honestly don't know what (if any) boot animations are built into that rom, but in the spirit of testing (and flash addiction) I used this zip.
This is what I noticed (and duplicated to confirm)--
Chainfire's live dmesg/logcat (I used paid versions) were replaced by this zip file.
When I "reinstalled" the first attempt found no boot animation files. I attempted install again and this time it did indeed "repair" the logcat/dmesg boot screen.
This is my first dual core so I have no experience in these apps working or not on such phones.
If this is wide spread then perhaps chainfire might want to look into an update to his code, if this is specific to the sgs3 then maybe we have deeper issues to delve into.
Sprint...LF9...Blazer1.6...no other customizations

[Q] Noob wanting to put the Sprint JB leak on his S3

Like everyone and their mother, I am tired of waiting. I am completely lost in the forums, and I know I will get all kinds of crap for posting this. Since my S3 is my main, I have 1 big question... What is the easiest way to put the official JB leak on my S3 while maintaining the ability to accept the OTA when Sprint pushes it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am brand new to this, I have tried reading all the basics but I just want to be sure. Thank You.
It's no way to root Jellybean and then accept the OTA as far as I know.
if i understand the SGS3 right, all you have to do is flash to stock unrooted, accept the official OTA update then use odin again and root. but why bother unrooting to accept the OTA when you can jsut flash a rooted port of JB. Plus if you take the OTA update and then reroot and flash a custom rom, then the whole process taken to get the OTA was a waste of time.
Ok, but if I flash the zip from here do I NEED to flash the kernal? Also, can install this over the top of rooted stock?
Thanks

Read the OP of the link. You need to clear caches and data as a general recommendation. The kernel is up to you, it comes with one already.
Thanks everyone, your replies are helping me make my decision. I'm just nervous about the whole process. I guess I just want what the OTA will offer but don't want to wait for it!

To root is the answer.
Trust me. within HOURS of the "official" release there will be copies here on the forums rooted and all other crap.
SO install the leak and forget the OTA all together. once the OTA is posted here (likely prerooted etc..) just flash that.
SUPER freaking easy once you have done it once you won't have any issues in the future.
just remember check check again and then check again that your flashing a compatible (SPRINT) rom. and you should be just fine.
Just in case anyone cares, I flashed freeza's LIH and I am thoroughly impressed. Battery life seems a little lower but other than that, it's running perfect. Thanks to all who encouraged me to go further down the rabbit hole!

I am running Jellybean now and would never unroot to take a OTA. Like others have said on here before the OTA comes out we will already be on it.
the easiest way is to root install clockwork or twrp (WARNING twrp does not appear to be able to access a 64gb card have not tried CWM)
then flash LIH (very stable no issues really)
when the OTA comes out you just come back here and install the "rooted" version of the OTA. I would be surprised if we did not get it first.
OUR updates are EASIER than the downloaded OTA
these are MASSIVE files. let your PC and home internet connection do the work of downloading the update and then simply "flash" the new update. faster easier safer etc. etc..
Thanks all, running LIH with LIG modem. Still can't find which modem is best to run for battery life though... With that being said, I am serching through the forums looking for the best one.

Can you elaborate? what thread is best for this? I noticed LIH is MUCH better on battery life than the last leak if I can make it even better than it is that would always be welcome
So you suggest using the LIH modem over the LIF and LIG? And out of curiosity, what are people referring to when they that the ROM "settles in" over a couple days? Once again thanks for everyone's help

when a rom settles, it simply means the software kinda learns how you operate it, kernal learns how you use your phone, such as how often and what you open on a daily basis. usually first couple of days, battery can be horrible, its gets better as you use your newly downloaded rom.

touchwiz rom rooted with no bloat

hi all
i have SPH-L710 (sprint official rom LJ7) but im rooted and have cwm installed.
i know there are a few stock rooted roms floating around but im still not sure what the ones are with the most support, stable and well pretty much works just like the official less the bloat.
i would like to be running jb 4.2.1 (but this is no a requirement if it means something breaking)
i would like to be able to overclock the cpu (if its safe and people have had success with it)
i would definately like to get rid of the sprint apps and even alot of the samsung apps (most of them) but i think i want to keep the stock dialpad and that might be part of samsung rom.
any input would be great (even if it just naming the roms so i can do further research) but i would like to hear from people who have actually tried these roms as you would know if things are broken or quirks or whatever.
thanks

its just that there is so many roms (even with touchwiz only) and that means tons of pages for each one from the beginning of dev to current so i always read the last 5 pages or so of each rom and that gives me an idea.
bascially looking for the names and stability of each rom and whats broke.
the 4.1.1 is ok with me too but would be nice for 4.2.1 but stability is more important

you could do that. also, before flashing the .zip just delete the apps you don't want from the system/app folder - i do this on 100% of the roms i flash. the link above is a great starting point, it's best to freeze apps and see what the effect is using titanium backup, then you can gauge which apps you know you wanna remove from the system/app folder before you flash future roms...

Can CM10 run on GB08?

So if I were to get root with the GB08 one-click. Would it be possible to install CM10? If so, whats the easiest way? Would there be a ODIN flashable recovery where I can then finish up with installing a nightly? Or do I need to use one of the ancient repacks to get CM10?

Well considering that there is no GB10. It seems you are out of luck. There is a GB08, but if you take the time to read, you will know that JB modems and kernels will not work with CM10. Everything you have asked is throughout the E4GT section. If the instructions don't mention what you are looking for or you don't see any mention in the thread of it, it is either up to you to test it or it probably won't work. So as long as you follow exactly what is in the instructions, you will be fine.
Now, telling someone that they are out of their league and that they can move on is immature and not your place, especially when I know for a fact that Sasquatch is a very respected member here. Everyone here is offering the minimal help for obvious answers. If you don't feel the need to take the time to read and research stuff on your own using the search function, Google, or even YouTube, we won't feel the need to help you.

I doubt that you will find any. How much time and space would it take to list installation instructions coming from every individual rom listed in the forum? The instructions are the same regardless of which rom you are currently using.

That's right don't be messin with the Sqash and why would you want to mess up such a great build like gb08 with cm10?
This would not be possible until source is realised by Sammy, and that is obvious because there is no onboard working recovery yet. If you get around to research the thread you will notice a bunch of posts concerning cm10 and it's ability to bork stuff on your phone.

Out of my league don't think so. And gb08 and cm10 are two different things and will never be able to run at the same time. So it's best for you to figure out what you want either tw or cm10. Out of my league don't think so. And gb08 and cm10 are two different things and will never be able to run at the same time. So it's best for you to figure out what you want either tw or cm10. Me along with other members run either of the 2 rooms with no problems. So yeah choose one and install. As for you saying I'm out of my league I don't think I am. Now I REALLY know you don't know what you are talking about. You are correct that they are 2 different things... but "run at the same time?" Clearly you dont understand that GB08 is the firmware version and CM10 is an OS load that stacks over whatever the developers support it to load to. And to try and say that CM10 will "never" run on GB08 is complete ignorance.

You can't run them at the same time. If you run cm10 can you use jellybean kernel or modem no you can't. Tw and cm10 are totally different ui. In other works your trying to lecture me when it's obvious your the one asking for help. Come on man try a little harder.
EDIT: And you come on here and ask if gb08 can run on top of cm10. You need to do a little more reading. You can't run cm10 at the same time with gb08. If I'm wrong can someone please correct me.

Just because the evidence presently suggests that CM10 cannot run on GB08, does not mean it will never be possible. You are trying to compare CM10 to GB08 to TW. TW has nothing to do with ANY of thouse. TW is a LAUNCHER. GB08 is a firmware version that can run any JB compatible launcher. CM10 is designed FOR and IS JellyBean. Presently it is having to be hack loaded but that doesn't mean that someone some day won't figure out how to make it run on top of the GB08 firmware. And just so that you know... I am presently using GB08 stock rooted. TW is the stock launcher; but I have loaded ADW over the top. ADW is used inside CM10. CM10 is not a launcher... it is the platform in which AOSP is run on an android device.
You are right.

"Never" was never said for one.
As was explained earlier, due to there fact that source had not been released yet, there is no gb08 support, 4.1 android support yes, but nothing for this specific build.
Also to blatantly disregard the instructions to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS in the correct thread of the ROM you wish to install is ignorance at its finest.
Then to attack the people who kindly offered you the information you seek, is not only ignorant but also small minded and weak.
And for further instruction on the matter, this question would have been better asked in the cm10 thread rather than increasing your post count and causing other members to feel the need to defend themselves.
My suggestion, READ (there's that pesky word again...) the form rules on posting in the proper places, creating threads, and harassing members. Then when finished with that (are you ready for this?) READ the op in question in the thread of the ROM you wish to flash.
