So I am on the 1,000 minute family VALUE talk plan. I have the 2gb "unlimited" data package and my wife have the 200mb data plan. We did not have the mobile hotspot (tethering) cause it would have cost use $15 each more.
But after t-mobile announcing their "uncarrier" plan, i see that now I have the unlimited mobile hotspot attached to my account for free! Is this because of the new plan policy? I'm sure they will throttle me when I use up to the 2gb, but sometimes it comes handy to have the free mobile hotspot.
So for those that have the same thing as me, check to see if you got it too. No more having to find ways to tether.
I'm sure this was mentioned somewhere, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to alert those that didn't know.
I noticed this as well. mine says i have 100mb of Hotspot data a month, which isn't much but its free so...
Dam, how you get 2G? I feel robbed, lol!

Don't take it if your on the unlimited plan. A rep offered me it over the phone without mentioning that it gets rid of the unlimited data for the trottled plan. I had to call and argue with a supervisor to get my plan put back to normal
I have the same plan as OP, but I did not receive tethering.

Wrong. If you are on the unthrottled truly unlimited data you get unlimited tethering with 500mb of 4g tethering.
Phone data is truly unlimited and tethering is 500mb of 4g and then, only the tethering data gets throttled.

The actual websites may not be different, but there is definitely a difference in the data sent and received. For example, when your computer or phone requests a website, it sends information like which browser and OS you use. This particular info can be spoofed, so it's not a huge problem, but there are differences in the ways different operating systems handle packets, and that can't be hidden.

Sprint read packets being sent using free tethering and determining what you've been doing while tethering, most of this only occurs when tethering has been drastically abused.

no sprint WILL keep unlimited data and the lte will not be quite as fast as at&t or verizon perhaps a few megs slower but i could care less the 12 megs i got with wimax were plenty enough all i want is a LTE connection that does not drop every 5 mins sprint has to keep unlimted data otherwise they WILL lose millions of customers
Technically speaking it shouldn't be able to hit as high for peak speeds using a 5x5 carrier vs 10x10 that the other guys use. Sprint has expressed how they are not looking to get into a peak speed war with the other carriers (since they would lose at it), instead they intend to focus on consistency. The hardware they are using will be able to (in the future like 2013/2014) hand off between all of their spectrum for all of their services, and with the rebranding of the 800MHz their coverage will be dramatically increased for voice (and later LTE as well). If Sprint can make their LTE network consistently around 6-12MB/s and keep it unlimited I would be very happy.
As for staying unlimited, I don't see why they can't continue it for the next few years if they choose. Sprint will probably see a net decrease in the cost of operating their new network vs the old one and nextel, and if they are not going for all out peak speeds they won't have that to contend with. The unlimited is the ONLY thing that keeps a lot of people with Sprint, if it wasn't for that I know I would have left. This will continue to be the case, if they end unlimited, Verizon with their big network will look pretty. Verizon and AT&T with their faster LTE networks will look nicer. For the next two years at least the only thing that differentiates Sprint is unlimited, so I think it's unlikely they would change that.
Now, I do foresee Sprint throttling your speeds past a certain amount of usage (hopefully over 5 or 10GB), or during peak hours for heavy users, but as long as they only throttle to a respectable amount I can live with that.
Hopefully southern california gets 4g lte im dying here using the wifi at home

Customer retention can offer you unlimited 5GB data for $20 (this does not have the tethering option) and it can be added now, no need to wait till the 5th. They only have the 5GB plan, i already asked about the 2GB for $10 and they said they don't have that offer. I didn't take this option even though it is $10 cheaper (I currently have the grandfathered unlimited data & text for $35) cause I always find myself tethering my laptop or tablet during travel when the hotel wireless is spotty.
I just got the 5 gig from retention but the rep states that I still will only have a five gig cap is this true? or does he know what he's talking about? I'm thinking he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. But got that plan from retention for 20 bucks a month

You cant have Unlimited 4G Data and HotSpot. You have to choose if you want a "capped" plan + HotSpot or Unlimited 4G Data. T-Mobile is here to make money, just like any other company, and from that perspective it simply wouldn't make sense to let customers tether and eat up as much data as they want while still keeping the second cheapest data plan.

Actually with the unlimited plan they do not offer hotspot service, I had the same issue when I joined tmobile so I rooted my phone and cm10 or 10.1 all you have to do is turn it on and you are ready to go
If you don't want to root you phone there is a app called open garden that allows you to share you internet connection to any other device using Bluetooth (as long as the device has 4.0 or newer OS), I haven't played with it to much but consumes less batter and also allows you to share with a desktop / laptop PC
Give it a shot

T-mobile makes money...trust me on that...but unlimited means no data cap...which should mean infinite data usage...yet they always have that fine print thst zeros out "unlimited". Oh well.

I looked and didn't see any threads about this, but Tmobile is currently offering an upgrade from the 500mb hotspot that comes with the unlimited plan for free. If you're on the unlimited plan just call em and you will get 2.5gb hotspot for free.

Called T-Mobile and confirmed the promotion, went from 500Mb to 2.5Gb at no charge.
Yup I wouldn't lie to ya lol. .. just after you call confirm on my Tmobile app. It took 2 calls for me b4 was applied correctly.

And you may also want to check if you were on the 2.5 GB upgrade because you'll get bumped up to 4.5 instead of giving you the 2.5 for 10.00 cheaper...

I just noticed that you could also go online to your Tmobile account and make the switch there (and possibly the Tmo app).
I just wonder if there are any hidden changes/limits to the service after the switch is made..

only "hidden" thing I noticed is it's not for people with truly unlimited, it's for people with unlimited everything. Like unlimited talk text and data, not just unlimited data.

2.5gb hotspot is pretty big step up. Great move from Tmob
Totally worked, thanks!

When I called today the representative said there is no such promotion. Has the promotion expired or did I just happen to reach someone who isn't very good at her job?

There is some confusion about this....
It isn't really a promotion. What it is, is that tmobile has changed their base tethering pool, from 500MB to 2.5GB.
If you look at your account online, you should see your unlimited data, with 500MB of smart phone tethering, which costs $20. You can upgrade that to the same unlimited data with 2.5GB of tethering... for $20.
so unless you look, you don't notice that it is there. Had mine put on 2 days ago.
Thank you OP for this thread!! 2.5GB, woohoo!!! All I did was called and they did it for me, easy as hell!!
Just did it online for my account. 2.5GB for no additional charge. Awesome.
Just did it myself, had to update my plan for 5 dollars but, both my phones got it 2.5 gigs a piece

I thought that every other plan without unlimited gets to use there whole data on tethering. So the 4.5 plan can use 4.5 gb on tethering. But the unlimited can only use 2.5 gb on tethering.

I have 4.5gb and I was wondering if you have a unlimited data plan can you tap into the unlimited data instead of your hot spot data which may save us some money for the hot spot plan

Well I have 2.5 GB for 10 dollar a month, just call them up with unlimited data +2.5GB tethering only add another 10 buck equal 20 buck a month sweet.

STILL WORKS- CONFIRMED. I have unlimited everything on my S4 which included 500MB in mobile hotspot. I just called, they "updated my account type" then 3 secs while still on the phone I got a text saying the generic "features changed on my account." 2.5GB of tethering for FREE
